Quantum Simulation of Lattice Gauge Theories on Superconducting Circuits: Quantum Phase Transition and Quench Dynamics

Recently, quantum simulation of low-dimensional lattice gauge theories (LGTs) has attracted many interests, which may improve our understanding of strongly correlated quantum many-body systems. Here, we propose an implementation to approximate $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGT on superconducting quantum circuits, where the effective theory is a mixture of a LGT and a gauge-broken term. Using matrix product state based methods, both the ground state properties and quench dynamics are systematically investigated. With an increase of the transverse (electric) field, the system displays a quantum phase transition from a disordered phase to a translational symmetry breaking phase. In the ordered phase, an approximate Gauss law of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGT emerges in the ground state. Moreover, to shed light on the experiments, we also study the quench dynamics, where there is a dynamical signature of the spontaneous translational symmetry breaking. The spreading of the single particle of matter degree is diffusive under the weak transverse field, while it is ballistic with small velocity for the strong field. Furthermore, due to the emergent Gauss law under the strong transverse field, the matter degree can also exhibit confinement dynamics which leads to a strong suppression of the nearest-neighbor hopping. Our results pave the way for simulating the LGT on superconducting circuits, including the quantum phase transition and quench dynamics.

Entanglement Entropy of Non-Hermitian Free Fermions

We study the entanglement properties of non-Hermitian free fermionic models with translation symmetry using the correlation matrix technique. Our results show that the entanglement entropy has a logarithmic correction to the area law in both one-dimensional and two-dimensional systems. For any one-dimensional one-band system, we prove that each Fermi point of the system contributes exactly 1/2 to the coefficient c of the logarithmic correction. Moreover, this relation between c and Fermi point is verified for more general one-dimensional and two-dimensional cases by numerical calculations and finite-size scaling analysis. In addition, we also study the single-particle and density-density correlation functions.

Kibble-Zurek mechanism in a one-dimensional incarnation of deconfined quantum critical point

The conventional Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM) describes the driven critical dynamics in the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson (LGW) spontaneous symmetry-breaking phase transitions. However, whether the KZM is still applicable in the deconfined quantum criticality, which is beyond the LGW paradigm, has not been explored. In this paper, we study the driven critical dynamics near a one-dimensional incarnation of deconfined quantum critical point between a ferromagnetic (FM) phase and a valance-bond-solid (VBS) phase. By investigating the dependence of the density of the topological defects on the driving rate, we verify the KZM in this Landau-forbidden critical point. Moreover, we find that both the FM and the VBS order parameters satisfy the finite-time scaling in the whole driven process. The effects of the emergent symmetry in the nonequilibrium dynamics are also studied.

Finite-Temperature Charge Dynamics and the Melting of the Mott Insulator

The Mott insulator is the quintessential strongly correlated electronic state. We obtain complete insight into the physics of the two-dimensional Mott insulator by extending the slave-fermion (holon-doublon) description to finite temperatures. We first benchmark its predictions against state-of-the-art quantum Monte Carlo simulations, demonstrating quantitative agreement. Qualitatively, the short-ranged spin fluctuations both induce holon-doublon bound states and renormalize the charge sector to form the Hubbard bands. The Mott gap is understood as the charge gap renormalized downwards by these spin fluctuations. As temperature increases, the Mott gap closes before the charge gap, causing a pseudogap regime to appear naturally during the melting of the Mott insulator.

Emergent Symmetry and Conserved Current at a One Dimensional Incarnation of Deconfined Quantum Critical Point

The deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) was originally proposed as a continuous transition between two spontaneous symmetry breaking phases in 2D spin-1/2 systems. While great efforts have been spent on the DQCP for 2D systems, both theoretically and numerically, ambiguities among the nature of the transition are still not completely clarified. Here we shift the focus to a recently proposed 1D incarnation of DQCP in a spin-1/2 chain. By solving it with the variational matrix product state in the thermodynamic limit, a continuous transition between a valence-bond solid phase and a ferromagnetic phase is discovered. The scaling dimensions of various operators are calculated and compared with those from field theoretical description. At the critical point, two emergent O(2) symmetries are revealed, and the associated conserved current operators with exact integer scaling dimensions are determined with scrutiny. Our findings provide the low-dimensional analog of DQCP where unbiased numerical results are in perfect agreement with the controlled field theoretical predictions and have extended the realm of the unconventional phase transition as well as its identification with the advanced numerical methodology.

Nonequilibrium critical dynamics in the quantum chiral clock model

In this paper we study the driven critical dynamics in the three-state quantum chiral clock model. This is motivated by a recent experiment, which verified the Kibble-Zurek mechanism and the finite-time scaling in a reconfigurable one-dimensional array of $^{87}$Rb atoms with programmable interactions. This experimental model shares the same universality class with the quantum chiral clock model and has been shown to possess a nontrivial non-integer dynamic exponent $z$. Besides the case of changing the transverse field as realized in the experiment, we also consider the driven dynamics under changing the longitudinal field. For both cases, we verify the finite-time scaling for a non-integer dynamic exponent $z$. Furthermore, we determine the critical exponents $β$ and $δ$ numerically for the first time. We also investigate the dynamic scaling behavior including the thermal effects, which are inevitably involved in experiments. From a nonequilibrium dynamic point of view, our results strongly support that there is a direct continuous phase transition between the ordered phase and the disordered phase. Also, we show that the method based on the finite-time scaling theory provides a promising approach to determine the critical point and critical properties.

Analytic continuation with Padé decomposition

The ill-posed analytic continuation problem for Green's functions or self-energies can be done using the Padé rational polynomial approximation. However, to extract accurate results from this approximation, high precision input data of the Matsubara Green's function are needed. The calculation of the Matsubara Green's function generally involves a Matsubara frequency summation which cannot be evaluated analytically. Numerical summation is requisite but it converges slowly with the increase of the Matsubara frequency. Here we show that this slow convergence problem can be significantly improved by utilizing the Padé decomposition approach to replace the Matsubara frequency summation by a Padé frequency summation, and high precision input data can be obtained to successfully perform the Padé analytic continuation.

Phase transition of the q-state clock model: duality and tensor renormalization

We investigate the critical behavior and the duality property of the ferromagnetic $q$-state clock model on the square lattice based on the tensor-network formalism. From the entanglement spectra of local tensors defined in the original and dual lattices, we obtain the exact self-dual points for the model with $q \leq 5 $ and approximate self-dual points for $q \geq 6$. We calculate accurately the lower and upper critical temperatures for the six-state clock model from the fixed-point tensors determined using the higher-order tensor renormalization group method and compare with other numerical results.

A generalized Lanczos method for systematic optimization of tensor network states

We propose a generalized Lanczos method to generate the many-body basis states of quantum lattice models using tensor-network states (TNS). The ground-state wave function is represented as a linear superposition composed from a set of TNS generated by Lanczos iteration. This method improves significantly both the accuracy and the efficiency of the tensor-network algorithm and allows the ground state to be determined accurately using TNS with very small virtual bond dimensions. This state contains significantly more entanglement than each individual TNS, reproducing correctly the logarithmic size dependence of the entanglement entropy in a critical system. The method can be generalized to non-Hamiltonian systems and to the calculation of low-lying excited states, dynamical correlation functions, and other physical properties of strongly correlated systems.
