A criterion of the non-existence of surface states in a semi-infinite crystal

An infinite crystal can be constructed by an infinite number of parallel two-dimensional (hkl) crystal planes coupled to each other. For crystals with negligible spin-orbit coupling, we report a rigorous proof of a criterion on the non-existence of surface states in a semi-infinite crystal with the crystal symmetry. The forward transfer to be the same as the backward one, called as F-B dynamical symmetry, is key to realize the criterion. Based on lattice model Hamiltonian with coupling between the nearest neighbor crystal planes only, we prove that a cut crystal will not be able to accommodate any surface states if the original infinite crystal has reflection symmetry about every crystal plane which results in F-B symmetry. The criterion provide a platform to simply conclude whether surface states exist or not in a cut crystal. For any such crystals, the non-existence or existence of surface states depends on the cut direction of the crystal plane. Since the spin-orbit coupling breaks the chiral symmetry, resulting in the F-B asymmetry, surface states can emerge in the (hkl) cut crystal with spin-orbit coupling.

Edge States of Monolayer and Bilayer Graphene Nanoribbons

On the basis of tight-binding lattice model, the edge states of monolayer and bilayer graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with different edge terminations are studied. The effects of edge-hopping modulation, spin-orbital coupling (SOC), and bias voltage on bilayer GNRs are discussed. We observe the following: (i) Some new extra edge states can be created by edge-hopping modulation for monolayer GNRs. (ii) Intralayer Rashba SOC plays a role in depressing the band energy gap $E_g$ opened by intrinsic SOC for both monolayer and bilayer GNRs. An almost linear dependent relation, i.e., $E_g\sim λ_R$, is found. (iii) Although the bias voltage favors a bulk energy gap for bilayer graphene without intrinsic SOC, it tends to reduce the gap induced by intrinsic SOC. (iv) The topological phase of the quantum spin Hall effect can be destroyed completely by interlayer Rashba SOC for bilayer GNRs.

Effect of edge decoration on the energy spectrum of semi-infinite lattices

Analytical studies of the effect of edge decoration on the energy spectrum of semi-infinite one-dimensional (1D) lattice chain with Peierls phase transition and zigzag edged graphene (ZEG) are presented by means of transfer matrix method, in the frame of which the sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of the edge states are determined. For 1D lattice chain, the zero-energy edge state exists when Peierls phase transition happens regardless whether the decoration exists or not, while the non-zero-energy edge states can be induced and manipulated through adjusting the edge decoration. On the other hand, the semi-infinite ZEG model with nearest-neighbor interaction can be mapped into the 1D lattice chain case. The non-zero-energy edge states can be induced by the decoration as well, and we can obtain the condition of the decoration on the edge for the existence of the novel edge states.

Coherent transport of armchair graphene constrictions

The coherent transport properties of armchair graphene nanoconstrictions(GNC) are studied using tight-binding approach and Green's function method. We find a non-bonding state at zero Fermi energy which results in a zero conductance valley, when a single vacancy locates at $y=3n\pm 1$ of a perfect metallic armchair graphene nanoribbon(aGNR). However, the non-bonding state doesn't exist when a vacancy locates at y=3n, and the conductance behavior of lowest conducting channel will not be affected by the vacancy. For the square-shaped armchair GNC consisting of three metallic aGNR segments, resonant tunneling behavior is observed in the single channel energy region. We find that the presence of localized edge state locating at the zigzag boundary can affect the resonant tunneling severely. A simplified one dimensional model is put forward at last, which explains the resonant tunneling behavior of armchair GNC very well.

Improved transfer matrix method without numerical instability

A new improved transfer matrix method (TMM) is presented. It is shown that the method not only overcomes the numerical instability found in the original TMM, but also greatly improves the scalability of computation. The new improved TMM has no extra cost of computing time as the length of homogeneous scattering region becomes large. The comparison between the scattering matrix method(SMM) and our new TMM is given. It clearly shows that our new method is much faster than SMM.

Extra Current and Integer Quantum Hall Conductance in the Spin-Orbit Coupling System

We study the extra term of particle current in a 2D k-cubic Rashba spin-orbit coupling system and the integer quantization of the Hall conductance in this system. We provide a correct formula of charge current in this system and the careful consideration of extra currents provides a stronger theoretical basis for the theory of the quantum Hall effect which has not been considered before. The non-trivial extra contribution to the particle current density and local conductivity, which originates from the cubic dependence on the momentum operator in the Hamiltonian, will have no effect on the integer quantization of the Hall conductance. The extension of Noether's theorem for the 2D k-cubic Rashba system is also addressed. The two methods reach to exactly the same results.

Non-adiabatic Arbitary Geometric Gates in 2-qubit NMR Model

We study a 2-qubit nuclear spin system for realizing an arbitrary geometric quantum phase gate by means of non-adiabatic operation. A single magnetic pulse with multi harmonic frequencies is applied to manipulate the quantum states of 2-qubit instantly. Using resonant transition approximation, the time dependent Hamiltonian of two nuclear spins can be solved analytically. The time evolution of the wave function is obtained without adiabatic approximation. The parameters of magnetic pulse, such as the frequency, amplitude, phase of each harmonic part as well as the time duration of the pulse, are determined for achieving an arbitrary non-adiabatic geometric phase gate. The derivation of non-adiabatic geometric controlled phase gates and A-A phase are also addressed.

Current in a Spin-orbit-coupling System

The formulae of particle current as well as spin- and angular momentum currents are studied for most spin-orbit coupling (SOC) systems. It is shown that the conventional expression of currents in some literatures are not complete for some SOC systems. The particle current in Dresselhaus system must have extra terms in additional to the conventional one, but no extra term for Rashba, Luttinger model. Further more, we also prove that the extra terms of total angular momentum appear in Rashba current in addition to conventional one.

Influences of spin accumulation on the intrinsic spin Hall effect in two dimensional electron gases with Rashba spin-orbit coupling

In a two dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, the external electric field may cause a spin Hall current in the direction perpendicular to the electric field. This effect was called the intrinsic spin Hall effect. In this paper, we investigate the influences of spin accumulation on this intrinsic spin Hall effect. We show that due to the existence of boundaries in a real sample, the spin Hall current generated by the intrinsic spin Hall effect will cause spin accumulation near the edges of the sample, and in the presence of spin accumulation, the spin Hall conductivity will not have a universal value. The influences of spin accumulation on the intrinsic spin Hall effect in narrow strips of two dimensional electron gases with Rashba spin-orbit coupling are investigated in detail.

Quantum-classical transition of the escape rate of uniaxial antiferromagnetic particles in an arbitrarily directed field

Quantum-classical escape rate transition has been studied for uniaxial antiferromagnetic particles with an arbitrarily directed magnetic field. In the case that the transverse and longitudinal fileds coexist, we calculate the phase boundary line between first- and second-order transitions, from which phase diagrams can be obtained. It is shown that the effects of the applied longitudinal magnetic field on quantum-classical transition vary greatly for different relative magnitudes of the non-compensation.

Field-tuned quantum tunneling in a supramolecule dimer $[Mn_4]_2$

Field-tuned quantum tunneling in two single-molecule magnets coupled antiferromagnetically and formed a supramolecule dimer is studied. We obtain step-like magnetization curves by means of the numerically exact solution of the time-dependent Schrődinger equation. The steps in magnetization curves show the phenomenon of quantum resonant tunneling quantitatively. The effects of the sweeping rate of applied field is discussed. These results obtained from quantum dynamical evolution well agree with the recent experiment[W.Wernsdorfer et al. Nature 416(2002)406].

Using exact diagonalization method,we studied the ground state of the anisotropic molecular magnets and find a critical point in the transverse field, which may divide the quantum tunneling region into two different parts. Possible ways to observe and take advantage of this point by varying the transverse field are suggested.

Quantum computing of molecular magnet Mn$_{12}$

Quantum computation in molecular magnets is studied by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation numerically. Following Leuenberger and Loss (Nature (London) 410, 789(2001)), an external oscillating magnetic field is applied to populate and manipulate the spin coherent states in molecular magnet Mn$_{12}$. The conditions to realize parallel recording and reading data bases of Grover algorithsm in molecular magnets are discussed in details. It is found that an accurate duration time of magnetic pulse as well as the amplitudes are required to design the device of quantum computing.

Exchange Bias in Ferromagnetic/Compensated Antiferromagnetic Bilayers

By means of micromagnetic spin dynamics calculations, a quantitative calculation is carried out to explore the mechanism of exchange bias (EB) in ferromagnetic (FM)/compensated antiferromagnetic (AFM) bilayers. The antiferromagnets with low and high Neel temperatures have been both considered, and the crossover from negative to positive EB is found only in the case with low Neel temperature. We propose that the mechanism of EB in FM/compensated AFM bilayers is due to the symmetry broken of AFM that yields some net ferromagnetic components.

Rapid algorithm for identifying backbones in the two-dimensional percolation model

We present a rapid algorithm for identifying the current-carrying backbone in the percolation model. It applies to general two-dimensional graphs with open boundary conditions. Complemented by the modified Hoshen-Kopelman cluster labeling algorithm, our algorithm identifies dangling parts using their local properties. For planar graphs, it finds the backbone almost four times as fast as Tarjan's depth-first-search algorithm, and uses the memory of the same size as the modified Hoshen-Kopelman algorithm. Comparison with other algorithms for backbone identification is addressed.

An extension of the characteristic angle method to the easy-plane spin-3/2 ferromagnet

The Characteristic Angle (CA) method [Lei Zhou and Ruibao Tao, J. Phys. A, {\bf 27} 5599] developed previously for the easy-plane spin-1 magnetic systems has been successfully extended to the spin-3/2 case. A compact form of the CA spin-3/2 operator transformation is given, then the ground state energy, the magnon dispersion relation and the spontaneous magnetization are discussed for an easy-plane spin-3/2 ferromagnet by using the CA method. Comparisons with the old theoretical methods are made in the end.

Quantum model for magnetic multivalued recording in coupled multilayers

In this paper, we discuss the possibilities of realizing the magnetic multi-valued (MMV) recording in a magnetic coupled multilayer. The hysteresis loop of a double-layer system is studied analytically, and the conditions for achieving the MMV recording are given. The conditions are studied from different respects, and the phase diagrams for the anisotropic parameters are given in the end.
