MIPI 2022 Challenge on RGB+ToF Depth Completion: Dataset and Report

Developing and integrating advanced image sensors with novel algorithms in camera systems is prevalent with the increasing demand for computational photography and imaging on mobile platforms. However, the lack of high-quality data for research and the rare opportunity for in-depth exchange of views from industry and academia constrain the development of mobile intelligent photography and imaging (MIPI). To bridge the gap, we introduce the first MIPI challenge including five tracks focusing on novel image sensors and imaging algorithms. In this paper, RGB+ToF Depth Completion, one of the five tracks, working on the fusion of RGB sensor and ToF sensor (with spot illumination) is introduced. The participants were provided with a new dataset called TetrasRGBD, which contains 18k pairs of high-quality synthetic RGB+Depth training data and 2.3k pairs of testing data from mixed sources. All the data are collected in an indoor scenario. We require that the running time of all methods should be real-time on desktop GPUs. The final results are evaluated using objective metrics and Mean Opinion Score (MOS) subjectively. A detailed description of all models developed in this challenge is provided in this paper. More details of this challenge and the link to the dataset can be found at https://github.com/mipi-challenge/MIPI2022.

MIPI 2022 Challenge on Quad-Bayer Re-mosaic: Dataset and Report

However, the lack of high-quality data for research and the rare opportunity for in-depth exchange of views from industry and academia constrain the development of mobile intelligent photography and imaging (MIPI). To bridge the gap, we introduce the first MIPI challenge, including five tracks focusing on novel image sensors and imaging algorithms. In this paper, Quad Joint Remosaic and Denoise, one of the five tracks, working on the interpolation of Quad CFA to Bayer at full resolution, is introduced. The participants were provided a new dataset, including 70 (training) and 15 (validation) scenes of high-quality Quad and Bayer pairs. In addition, for each scene, Quad of different noise levels was provided at 0dB, 24dB, and 42dB. All the data were captured using a Quad sensor in both outdoor and indoor conditions. The final results are evaluated using objective metrics, including PSNR, SSIM, LPIPS, and KLD. A detailed description of all models developed in this challenge is provided in this paper. Removing Diffraction Image Artifacts in Under-Display Camera via Dynamic Skip Connection Network

Recent development of Under-Display Camera (UDC) systems provides a true bezel-less and notch-free viewing experience on smartphones (and TV, laptops, tablets), while allowing images to be captured from the selfie camera embedded underneath. In a typical UDC system, the microstructure of the semi-transparent organic light-emitting diode (OLED) pixel array attenuates and diffracts the incident light on the camera, resulting in significant image quality degradation. Oftentimes, noise, flare, haze, and blur can be observed in UDC images. In this work, we aim to analyze and tackle the aforementioned degradation problems. We define a physics-based image formation model to better understand the degradation. In addition, we utilize one of the world's first commodity UDC smartphone prototypes to measure the real-world Point Spread Function (PSF) of the UDC system, and provide a model-based data synthesis pipeline to generate realistically degraded images. We specially design a new domain knowledge-enabled Dynamic Skip Connection Network (DISCNet) to restore the UDC images. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method through extensive experiments on both synthetic and real UDC data. Our physics-based image formation model and proposed DISCNet can provide foundations for further exploration in UDC image restoration, and even for general diffraction artifact removal in a broader sense.

Exploring Multi-Scale Feature Propagation and Communication for Image Super Resolution

Multi-scale techniques have achieved great success in a wide range of computer vision tasks. However, while this technique is incorporated in existing works, there still lacks a comprehensive investigation on variants of multi-scale convolution in image super resolution. In this work, we present a unified formulation over widely-used multi-scale structures. With this framework, we systematically explore the two factors of multi-scale convolution -- feature propagation and cross-scale communication. Based on the investigation, we propose a generic and efficient multi-scale convolution unit -- Multi-Scale cross-Scale Share-weights convolution (MS$^3$-Conv). Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed MS$^3$-Conv can achieve better SR performance than the standard convolution with less parameters and computational cost. Beyond quantitative analysis, we comprehensively study the visual quality, which shows that MS$^3$-Conv behave better to recover high-frequency details.

Suppressing Model Overfitting for Image Super-Resolution Networks

Large deep networks have demonstrated competitive performance in single image super-resolution (SISR), with a huge volume of data involved. However, in real-world scenarios, due to the limited accessible training pairs, large models exhibit undesirable behaviors such as overfitting and memorization. To suppress model overfitting and further enjoy the merits of large model capacity, we thoroughly investigate generic approaches for supplying additional training data pairs. In particular, we introduce a simple learning principle MixUp to train networks on interpolations of sample pairs, which encourages networks to support linear behavior in-between training samples. In addition, we propose a data synthesis method with learned degradation, enabling models to use extra high-quality images with higher content diversity. This strategy proves to be successful in reducing biases of data. By combining these components -- MixUp and synthetic training data, large models can be trained without overfitting under very limited data samples and achieve satisfactory generalization performance. Our method won the second place in NTIRE2019 Real SR Challenge.

PIRM Challenge on Perceptual Image Enhancement on Smartphones: Report

This paper reviews the first challenge on efficient perceptual image enhancement with the focus on deploying deep learning models on smartphones. The challenge consisted of two tracks. In the first one, participants were solving the classical image super-resolution problem with a bicubic downscaling factor of 4. The second track was aimed at real-world photo enhancement, and the goal was to map low-quality photos from the iPhone 3GS device to the same photos captured with a DSLR camera. The target metric used in this challenge combined the runtime, PSNR scores and solutions' perceptual results measured in the user study. To ensure the efficiency of the submitted models, we additionally measured their runtime and memory requirements on Android smartphones. The proposed solutions significantly improved baseline results defining the state-of-the-art for image enhancement on smartphones.
