Robust Transmission Design for RIS-Assisted High-Speed Train Communication Coverage Enhancement With Imperfect Cascaded Channels

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has recently been gained attention as an effective technique improving the coverage and performance of communication systems by creating additional communication links. Deployment of RIS is crucial for overcoming signal coverage limitations, especially in high-speed train (HST) scenarios. Considerable research has been performed assuming perfect channel state information (CSI). However, due to the rapidly time-varying fading channels and feedback delays, achieving perfect CSI at the base station (BS) is not feasible in the HST scenarios. To tackle this problem, this paper investigates a robust design strategy for RIS-aided HST communication coverage enhancement, particularly focusing on cascaded BS-RIS-user channels at BS (CBRUB). The study explores the optimization problem under two types distinct of models: centered on minimizing transmit power subject to worst-case rate constraints within the bounded CSI error (BCSIE) model, and the other focusing on outage probability (OP) constraints under the statistical CSI error (SCSIE) model. We use the S-procedure to approximate the non-convex (NC) constraints, converting the worst-case rate constraints into linear matrix inequalities. Additionally, the Bernstein-type inequality is applied to transform the OP constraints into second-order cone constraints and linear inequalities. The simulation analysis results show that CBRUB errors have a significant effect on system performance compared to direct CSI errors.

A CGAN-LSTM-Based Framework for Time-Varying Non-Stationary Channel Modeling

Time-varying non-stationary channels, with complex dynamic variations and temporal evolution characteristics, have significant challenges in channel modeling and communication system performance evaluation. Most existing methods of time-varying channel modeling focus on predicting channel state at a given moment or simulating short-term channel fluctuations, which are unable to capture the long-term evolution of the channel. This paper emphasizes the generation of long-term dynamic channel to fully capture evolution of non-stationary channel properties. The generated channel not only reflects temporal dynamics but also ensures consistent stationarity. We propose a hybrid deep learning framework that combines conditional generative adversarial networks (CGAN) with long short-term memory (LSTM) networks. A stationarity-constrained approach is designed to ensure temporal correlation of the generated time-series channel. This method can generate channel with required temporal non-stationarity. The model is validated by comparing channel statistical features, and the results show that the generated channel is in good agreement with raw channel and provides good performance in terms of non-stationarity.

On eigenfunctions and nodal sets of the Witten-Laplacian

In this paper, we successfully establish a Courant-type nodal domain theorem for both the Dirichlet eigenvalue problem and the closed eigenvalue problem of the Witten-Laplacian. Moreover, we also characterize the properties of the nodal lines of the eigenfunctions of the Witten-Laplacian on smooth Riemannian $2$-manifolds. Besides, for a Riemann surface with genus $g$, an upper bound for the multiplicity of closed eigenvalues of the Witten-Laplacian can be provided.

Measurement-Based Non-Stationary Markov Tapped Delay Line Channel Model for 5G-Railways

5G for Railways (5G-R) is globally recognized as a promising next-generation railway communication system designed to meet increasing demands. Channel modeling serves as foundation for communication system design, with tapped delay line (TDL) models widely utilized in system simulations due to their simplicity and practicality and serves as a crucial component of various standards like 3GPP. However, existing TDL models applicable to 5G-R systems are limited. Most fail to capture non-stationarity, a critical characteristic of railway communications, while others are unsuitable for the specific frequency bands and bandwidths of 5G-R. In this paper, a channel measurement campaign for 5G-R dedicated network is carried out, resulting in a measurement-based 5-tap TDL model utilizing a first-order two-state Markov chain to represent channel non stationarity. Key model parameters, including number of taps, statistical distribution of amplitude, phase and Doppler shift, and state transition probability matrix, are extracted. The correlation between tap amplitudes are also obtained. Finally, accuracy of model is validated through comparisons with measurement data and 3GPP model. These findings are expected to offer valuable insights for design, optimization, and link-level simulation and validation of 5G-R systems.

Reconstructing Quantitative Cerebral Perfusion Images Directly From Measured Sinogram Data Acquired Using C-arm Cone-Beam CT

To shorten the door-to-puncture time for better treating patients with acute ischemic stroke, it is highly desired to obtain quantitative cerebral perfusion images using C-arm cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) equipped in the interventional suite. However, limited by the slow gantry rotation speed, the temporal resolution and temporal sampling density of typical C-arm CBCT are much poorer than those of multi-detector-row CT in the diagnostic imaging suite. The current quantitative perfusion imaging includes two cascaded steps: time-resolved image reconstruction and perfusion parametric estimation. For time-resolved image reconstruction, the technical challenge imposed by poor temporal resolution and poor sampling density causes inaccurate quantification of the temporal variation of cerebral artery and tissue attenuation values. For perfusion parametric estimation, it remains a technical challenge to appropriately design the handcrafted regularization for better solving the associated deconvolution problem. These two challenges together prevent obtaining quantitatively accurate perfusion images using C-arm CBCT. The purpose of this work is to simultaneously address these two challenges by combining the two cascaded steps into a single joint optimization problem and reconstructing quantitative perfusion images directly from the measured sinogram data. In the developed direct cerebral perfusion parametric image reconstruction technique, TRAINER in short, the quantitative perfusion images have been represented as a subject-specific conditional generative model trained under the constraint of the time-resolved CT forward model, perfusion convolutional model, and the subject's own measured sinogram data. Results shown in this paper demonstrated that using TRAINER, quantitative cerebral perfusion images can be accurately obtained using C-arm CBCT in the interventional suite.

WHALE: Towards Generalizable and Scalable World Models for Embodied Decision-making

World models play a crucial role in decision-making within embodied environments, enabling cost-free explorations that would otherwise be expensive in the real world. To facilitate effective decision-making, world models must be equipped with strong generalizability to support faithful imagination in out-of-distribution (OOD) regions and provide reliable uncertainty estimation to assess the credibility of the simulated experiences, both of which present significant challenges for prior scalable approaches. This paper introduces WHALE, a framework for learning generalizable world models, consisting of two key techniques: behavior-conditioning and retracing-rollout. Behavior-conditioning addresses the policy distribution shift, one of the primary sources of the world model generalization error, while retracing-rollout enables efficient uncertainty estimation without the necessity of model ensembles. These techniques are universal and can be combined with any neural network architecture for world model learning. Incorporating these two techniques, we present Whale-ST, a scalable spatial-temporal transformer-based world model with enhanced generalizability. We demonstrate the superiority of Whale-ST in simulation tasks by evaluating both value estimation accuracy and video generation fidelity. Additionally, we examine the effectiveness of our uncertainty estimation technique, which enhances model-based policy optimization in fully offline scenarios. Furthermore, we propose Whale-X, a 414M parameter world model trained on 970K trajectories from Open X-Embodiment datasets. We show that Whale-X exhibits promising scalability and strong generalizability in real-world manipulation scenarios using minimal demonstrations.

Refracting Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted URLLC for Millimeter Wave High-Speed Train Communication Coverage Enhancement

High-speed train (HST) has garnered significant attention from both academia and industry due to the rapid development of railways worldwide. Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication, known for its large bandwidth is an effective way to address performance bottlenecks in cellular network based HST wireless communication systems. However, mmWave signals suffer from significant path loss when traversing carriage, posing substantial challenges to cellular networks. To address this issue, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) have gained considerable interest for its ability to enhance cell coverage by reflecting signals toward receiver. Ensuring communication reliability, a core performance indicators of ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) in fifth-generation systems, is crucial for providing steady and reliable data transmissions along railways, particularly for delivering safety and control messages and monitoring HST signaling information. In this paper, we investigate a refracting RIS-assisted multi-user multiple-input single-output URLLC system in mmWave HST communications. We propose a sum rate maximization problem, subject to base station beamforming constraint, as well as refracting RIS discrete phase shifts and reliability constraints. To solve this optimization problem, we design a joint optimization algorithm based on alternating optimization method. This involves decoupling the original optimization problem into active beamforming design and packet error probability optimization subproblem, and discrete phase shift design subproblems. These subproblems are addressed exploiting Lagrangian dual method and the local search method, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate the fast convergence of the proposed algorithm and highlight the benefits of refracting RIS adoption for sum rate improvement in mmWave HST networks.

Sequential-Scanning Dual-Energy CT Imaging Using High Temporal Resolution Image Reconstruction and Error-Compensated Material Basis Image Generation

Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) has been widely used to obtain quantitative elemental composition of imaged subjects for personalized and precise medical diagnosis. Compared with DECT leveraging advanced X-ray source and/or detector technologies, the use of the sequential-scanning data acquisition scheme to implement DECT may make a broader impact on clinical practice because this scheme requires no specialized hardware designs and can be directly implemented into conventional CT systems. However, since the concentration of iodinated contrast agent in the imaged subject varies over time, sequentially scanned data sets acquired at two tube potentials are temporally inconsistent. As existing material basis image reconstruction approaches assume that the data sets acquired at two tube potentials are temporally consistent, the violation of this assumption results in inaccurate quantification of material concentration. In this work, we developed sequential-scanning DECT imaging using high temporal resolution image reconstruction and error-compensated material basis image generation, ACCELERATION in short, to address the technical challenge induced by temporal inconsistency of sequentially scanned data sets and improve quantification accuracy of material concentration in sequential-scanning DECT. ACCELERATION has been validated and evaluated using numerical simulation data sets generated from clinical human subject exams and experimental human subject studies. Results demonstrated the improvement of quantification accuracy and image quality using ACCELERATION.

Energy-Guided Diffusion Sampling for Offline-to-Online Reinforcement Learning

Combining offline and online reinforcement learning (RL) techniques is indeed crucial for achieving efficient and safe learning where data acquisition is expensive. Existing methods replay offline data directly in the online phase, resulting in a significant challenge of data distribution shift and subsequently causing inefficiency in online fine-tuning. To address this issue, we introduce an innovative approach, \textbf{E}nergy-guided \textbf{DI}ffusion \textbf{S}ampling (EDIS), which utilizes a diffusion model to extract prior knowledge from the offline dataset and employs energy functions to distill this knowledge for enhanced data generation in the online phase. The theoretical analysis demonstrates that EDIS exhibits reduced suboptimality compared to solely utilizing online data or directly reusing offline data. EDIS is a plug-in approach and can be combined with existing methods in offline-to-online RL setting. By implementing EDIS to off-the-shelf methods Cal-QL and IQL, we observe a notable 20% average improvement in empirical performance on MuJoCo, AntMaze, and Adroit environments. Code is available at \url{https://github.com/liuxhym/EDIS}.

On the Ashbaugh-Benguria type conjecture about lower-order Neumann eigenvalues of the Witten-Laplacian

An isoperimetric inequality for lower order nonzero Neumann eigenvalues of the Witten-Laplacian on bounded domains in a Euclidean space or a hyperbolic space has been proven in this paper. About this conclusion, we would like to point out two things: It strengthens the well-known Szeg\H{o}-Weinberger inequality for nonzero Neumann eigenvalues of the classical free membrane problem given in [J. Rational Mech. Anal. 3 (1954) 343-356] and [J. Rational Mech. Anal. 5 (1956) 633-636]; Recently, Xia-Wang [Math. Ann. 385 (2023) 863-879] gave a very important progress to the celebrated conjecture of M. S. Ashbaugh and R. D. Benguria proposed in [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 24 (1993) 557-570]. It is easy to see that our conclusion here covers Xia-Wang's this progress as a special case. In this paper, we have also proposed two open problems which can be seen as a generalization of Ashbaugh-Benguria's conjecture mentioned above.

Several isoperimetric inequalities of Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues of the Witten-Laplacian

In this paper, by mainly using the rearrangement technique and suitably constructing trial functions, under the constraint of fixed weighted volume, we can successfully obtain several isoperimetric inequalities for the first and the second Dirichlet eigenvalues, the first nonzero Neumann eigenvalue of the Witten-Laplacian on bounded domains in space forms. These spectral isoperimetric inequalities extend those classical ones (i.e. the Faber-Krahn inequality, the Hong-Krahn-Szeg\H{o} inequality and the Szeg\H{o}-Weinberger inequality) of the Laplacian.

A doubly robust estimator for the Mann Whitney Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test when applied for causal inference in observational studies

The Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon rank sum test (MWWRST) is a widely used method for comparing two treatment groups in randomized control trials, particularly when dealing with highly skewed data. However, when applied to observational study data, the MWWRST often yields invalid results for causal inference. To address this limitation, Wu et al. (2014) introduced an approach that incorporates inverse probability weighting (IPW) into this rank-based statistics to mitigate confounding effects. Subsequently, Mao (2018), Zhang et al. (2019), and Ai et al. (2020) extended this IPW estimator to develop doubly robust estimators. Nevertheless, each of these approaches has notable limitations. Mao's method imposes stringent assumptions that may not align with real-world study data. Zhang et al.'s (2019) estimators rely on bootstrap inference, which suffers from computational inefficiency and lacks known asymptotic properties. Meanwhile, Ai et al. (2020) primarily focus on testing the null hypothesis of equal distributions between two groups, which is a more stringent assumption that may not be well-suited to the primary practical application of MWWRST. In this paper, we aim to address these limitations by leveraging functional response models (FRM) to develop doubly robust estimators. We demonstrate the performance of our proposed approach using both simulated and real study data.

How To Guide Your Learner: Imitation Learning with Active Adaptive Expert Involvement

Imitation learning aims to mimic the behavior of experts without explicit reward signals. Passive imitation learning methods which use static expert datasets typically suffer from compounding error, low sample efficiency, and high hyper-parameter sensitivity. In contrast, active imitation learning methods solicit expert interventions to address the limitations. However, recent active imitation learning methods are designed based on human intuitions or empirical experience without theoretical guarantee. In this paper, we propose a novel active imitation learning framework based on a teacher-student interaction model, in which the teacher's goal is to identify the best teaching behavior and actively affect the student's learning process. By solving the optimization objective of this framework, we propose a practical implementation, naming it AdapMen. Theoretical analysis shows that AdapMen can improve the error bound and avoid compounding error under mild conditions. Experiments on the MetaDrive benchmark and Atari 2600 games validate our theoretical analysis and show that our method achieves near-expert performance with much less expert involvement and total sampling steps than previous methods. The code is available at https://github.com/liuxhym/AdapMen.

Radio Communication Scenarios in 5G-Railways

With the rapid development of railways, especially high-speed railways, there is an increasingly urgent demand for new wireless communication system for railways. Taking the mature 5G technology as an opportunity, 5G-railways (5G-R) have been widely regarded as a solution to meet the diversified demands of railway wireless communications. For the design, deployment and improvement of 5G-R networks, radio communication scenario classification plays an important role, affecting channel modeling and system performance evaluation. In this paper, a standardized radio communication scenario classification, including 18 scenarios, is proposed for 5G-R. This paper analyzes the differences of 5G-R scenarios compared with the traditional cellular networks and GSM-railways, according to 5G-R requirements and the unique physical environment and propagation characteristics. The proposed standardized scenario classification helps deepen the research of 5G-R and promote the development and application of the existing advanced technologies in railways.
