Remarkable Enhancement of High Harmonic Generation from Superhard Material under High Pressure

High harmonic generation (HHG) in solids offers a pathway to develop compact extreme ultraviolet (EUV) sources crucial for attosecond science and advanced spectroscopy. Here, we demonstrate theoretically that high pressure dramatically enhances HHG in superhard hexagonal tungsten nitride (h-WN6). Compared with solid-state systems at ambient pressure, the reshaped electronic environment under high pressure leads to a unique band-gap widening in h-WN6, which raises the material's damage threshold, allowing the use of stronger laser fields and enabling access to higher-energy bands. This pressure-induced band-gap widening offers a promising strategy to overcome the cutoff limitation of solid-state EUV light sources.

Tracking doublon-holon dynamics in high-harmonic generation from Mott insulators

High-harmonic generation (HHG) in strongly correlated Mott insulators is investigated using exact diagonalization and time-dependent density-matrix propagation of a laser-driven one-dimensional Hubbard chain. By projecting onto equilibrium Hubbard bands, we use the doublon population and its dynamics as a diagnostic to analyze intraband (spin-wave-like) and interband (doublon-holon creation) excitation channels. A filling-dependent crossover emerges: Bloch-like intraband response at dilute filling, mixed dynamics at intermediate filling, and interband-dominated HHG with plateau and cutoff near half filling. In the considered parameter range, increasing interaction strength $U$ strongly suppresses interband contributions through the enlarged Mott gap and correlation-induced localization. Intra- and interband current decomposition reveals opposing flows below the Mott gap (\Delta_{\mathrm{Mott}}) and selective dephasing suppression of interband coherence, enhancing net doublon accumulation. Time-frequency analysis uncovers the filling-dependent features of quantum trajectories, manifesting in distinct below-\Delta_{\mathrm{Mott}} emission. This doublon-based analysis provides a transparent link between equilibrium spin-charge separation and nonequilibrium strong-field response, and clarifies how dephasing modifies interband coherence and doublon accumulation.

Efficient high-harmonic generation in van der Waals ferroelectric NbOI$_2$ crystals

Layered NbOX$_2$ ($X=\mathrm{Cl,\,Br,\,I}$), a member of the van der Waals ferroelectric family, exhibits intrinsic ferroelectricity and pronounced nonlinear optical responses, making it a promising candidate for integrated nanophotonics applications. While previous studies have emphasized the material's strong second-order nonlinear responses, higher-order nonlinear responses are still mostly unexplored. This work systematically investigates NbOI$_2$ using high harmonic generation (HHG) spectroscopy. Driven by an intense mid-infrared laser field centered at $\sim4~\mu\mathrm{m}$ wavelength, highly anisotropic odd- and even-order harmonics up to the 16th order are generated at a low peak intensity of $0.4~\mathrm{TW\,cm^{-2}}$, extending beyond the material's bandgap. Both bulk and flake forms of NbOI$_2$ display pronounced harmonic emission from the near-infrared to the deep-ultraviolet spectral region, with a notably high overall conversion efficiency compared to other known materials. Polarization-resolved measurements reveal that even-order harmonics remain aligned with the crystal polar axis regardless of the driving-field orientation, whereas odd-order harmonics are dynamically affected. First-principles calculations suggest that the flat valence band associated with Peierls dimerization enhances HHG efficiency through electron correlation. These findings provide fresh perspectives on HHG in van der Waals ferroelectric materials and facilitate the development of compact and tunable quantum light sources.

Effectively nonlinear magneto-optical detection under strong laser fields

We report a strong-field detection method for magnetic materials, based on the characterization of crystal time-reversal symmetry through the elliptical dichroism of harmonics. The consistency of the low-order harmonics driven by laser fields with opposite helicities originates from the time-reversal symmetry of crystals, and thus the appearance of harmonic elliptical dichroism can serve as evidence for the breaking of crystal time-reversal symmetry. We have used the semiconductor Bloch equation to calculate the harmonic spectra of the bilayer ferromagnetic material Cr2Ge2Te6, with and without spin-orbit coupling. In magnetic materials, strong spin-orbit coupling causes the loss of time-reversal symmetry in the phase of polarization currents between different spin states, inducing elliptical dichroism in the harmonics. Here we extend the magneto-optical Faraday or Kerr effect to the nonlinear domain using strong laser fields, improving the sensitivity and applicability of magneto-optical detection methods.

Dephasing of Strong-Field-Driven Floquet States Revealed by Time- and Spectrum-Resolved Quantum-Path Interferometry

Floquet engineering, while a powerful tool for ultrafast quantum-state manipulation, faces challenges under strong-field conditions, as recent high harmonic generation studies unveil exceptionally short dephasing times. In this study, using time- and spectrum-resolved quantum-path interferometry, we investigate the dephasing mechanisms of terahertz-driven excitons. Our results reveal a dramatic increase in exciton dephasing rate beyond a threshold field strength, indicating exciton dissociation as the primary dephasing mechanism. Importantly, we demonstrate long dephasing times of strong-field-dressed excitons, supporting coherent strong-field manipulation of quantum materials.

On the Theory of Solid-State Harmonic Generation Governed by Crystal Symmetry

The solid-state harmonic generation (SSHG) derives from photocurrent coherence. The crystal symmetry, including point-group symmetry and time-reversal symmetry, constrains the amplitude and phase of the photocurrent, thus manipulates the coherent processes in SSHG. We revisit the expression of photocurrent under the electric dipole approximation and give an unambiguous picture of non-equilibrium dynamics of photocarriers on laser-dressed effective bands. In addition to the dynamical phase, we reveal the indispensable roles of the phase difference of transition dipole moments and the phase induced by shift vector in the photocurrent coherence. Microscopic mechanism of the selection rule, orientation dependence, polarization characteristics, time-frequency analysis and ellipticity dependence of harmonics governed by symmetries is uniformly clarified in our theoretical framework. This work integrates non-equilibrium electronic dynamics of condensed matter in strong laser fields, and paves a way to explore more nonlinear optical phenomena governed by crystal symmetry.

Time-resolved single-particle spectrum of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model after interaction quenches

We investigate the non-equilibrium dynamics of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model after interaction quenches. In strong-coupling regime with large on-site interaction, the ground states of this model with small and large nearest-neighbor interactions are in spin-density-wave and charge-density-wave phases, respectively. Combining twisted boundary conditions with the time-dependent Lanczos method, we obtain snapshots of the time-dependent single-particle spectrum after quenches. We find that for quench within the same phase, the single-particle spectrum becomes close to that of the quenched Hamiltonian immediately after the quench. While for quench across the critical point, the afterward evolution process depends mainly on the distribution of the initial state among the eigenstates of the quenched Hamiltonian. Our finding may serve as a way to detect the phase transition in ultracold atom systems with interactions.

Phase transitions in the Haldane-Hubbard model with ionic potentials

By employing the exact-diagonalization method, we revisit the ground-state phase diagram of the Haldane-Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice with staggered sublattice potentials. The phase diagram includes the band insulator, Mott insulator, and two Chern insulator phases with Chern numbers C=2 and C=1, respectively. The character of transitions between different phases is studied by analyzing the lower-lying energy levels, excitation gaps, structure factors, and fidelity metric. We find that the C=1 phase can be continuously deformed into the C=2 phase without a gap closure in the periodic boundary condition, while a further analysis on the Berry curvatures indicates that the excitation gap closes at the phase boundary in a twisted boundary condition, accompanied by the discontinuities of structure factors. All the other phase transitions are found to be first-order ones as expected.

First-principles thermal equation of state of fcc iridium

The thermal equation of states for fcc iridium (Ir) is obtained from first-principles molecular dynamics up to 3000 K and 540 GPa. The equation of state (EoS) is globally fitted to a simplified free energy model and various parameters are derived. The theoretical principal Hugoniot is compared with shockwave experiments, where discrepancy suggests formation of new Ir phases. A few representative EoS parameters, such as bulk modulus $K_T$, thermal expansivity $α$, Grüneisen parameter $γ$, and constant pressure capacity $C_P$, Debye temperature, $Θ_D$ are computed to compare with experimental data

Catching the geometric phase effect around conical intersection in molecules by high order harmonic spectroscopy

Nonadiabatic dynamics around an avoid crossing or a conical intersection play a crucial role in the photoinduced processes of most polyatomic molecules. The present work shows that the topological phase in conical intersection makes the behavior of pump-probe high-order harmonic spectroscopy different from the case of avoid crossing. The coherence built up when the system crosses the avoid crossing will lead to the oscillatory behavior of the spectrum, while the geometric phase erodes these oscillations in the case of conical intersection. Additionally, the dynamical blueshift and the splitting of time-resolved spectrum allow capturing the snapshot dynamics with sub-femtosecond resolution.

High-harmonic generation approaching the quantum critical point of strongly correlated systems

By employing the exact diagonalization method, we investigate the high-harmonic generation (HHG) of the correlated systems under the strong laser irradiation. For the extended Hubbard model on a periodic chain, HHG close to the quantum critical point (QCP) is more significant compared to two neighboring gapped phases (i.e., charge-density-wave and spin-density wave states), especially in low-frequencies. We confirm that the systems in the vicinity of the QCP are supersensitive to the external field and more optical-transition channels via excited states are responsible for HHG. This feature holds the potential of obtaining high-efficiency harmonics by making use of materials approaching to QCP. Based on two-dimensional Haldane model, we further propose that the even- or odd-order components of generated harmonics can be promisingly regarded as spectral signals to distinguish the topologically ordered phases from locally ordered ones. Our findings in this work pave the way to achieve ultrafast light source from HHG in strongly correlated materials and to study quantum phase transition by nonlinear optics in strong laser fields.

Solid-like high harmonic generation from rotationally periodic systems

High harmonic generation (HHG) from crystals in strong laser fields has been understood by the band theory of solid, which is based on the periodic boundary condition (PBC) of translational invariant. For systems having PBC of rotational invariant, in principles an analogous Bloch theorem can be developed and applied. Taking a ring-type cluster of cyclo[18]carbon as a representative, we theoretically suggest a quasi-band model and study its HHG by solving time-dependent Liouville-von Neumann equation. Under the irradiation of circularly polarized laser, explicit selection rules for left-handed and right-handed harmonics are observed, while in linearly polarized laser field, cyclo[18]carbon exhibits solid-like HHG originated from intra-band oscillations and inter-band transitions, which in turn is promising to optically detect the symmetry and geometry of controversial structures. In a sense, this work presents a connection linking the high harmonics of gases and solids.

The Role of Shift Vector in High-Harmonic Generation from Non-Centrosymmetric Topological Insulators under Strong Laser Fields

As a promising avenue to obtain new extreme ultraviolet light source and detect electronic properties, high-harmonic generation (HHG) has been actively developed in both theory and experiment. In solids lacking inversion symmetry, when electrons undergo a nonadiabatic transition, a directional charge shift occurs and is characterized by shift vector, which measures the real-space shift of the photoexcited electron and hole. For the first time, we have revealed that shift vector plays prominent roles in the real-space tunneling mechanism of three-step model for electrons under strong laser fields. Since shift vector is determined by the topological properties of related wave functions, we expect HHG with its contribution can provide direct knowledge on the band topology in noncentrosymmetric topological insulators (TIs). In both Kane-Mele model and realistic material BiTeI, we have found that the shift vector reverses when band inversion happens during the topological phase transition between normal and topological insulators. Under oscillating strong laser fields, the reversal of shift vector leads to completely opposite radiation time of high-order harmonics. This makes HHG a feasible all-optical strong-field method to directly identify the band inversion in non-centrosymmetric TIs.

Nonlinear level attraction of cavity axion polariton in antiferromagnetic topological insulator

Strong coupling between cavity photons and various excitations in condensed matters boosts the field of light-matter interaction and generates several exciting sub-fields, such as cavity optomechanics and cavity magnon polariton. Axion quasiparticles, emerging in topological insulators, were predicted to strongly couple with the light and generate the so-called axion polariton. Here, we demonstrate that there arises a gapless level attraction in cavity axion polariton of antiferromagnetic topological insulators, which originates from a nonlinear interaction between axion and the odd-order resonance of cavity. Such a novel level attraction is essentially different from conventional level attractions with the mechanism of either a linear coupling or a dissipation-mediated interaction, and also different from the level repulsion induced by the strong coupling in common polaritons. Our results reveal a new mechanism of level attractions, and open up new roads for exploring the axion polariton with cavity technologies. They have potential applications for quantum information and dark matter research.

Electron-Backscattering-Assisted High Harmonic Generation from Bilayer Nanostructures

In the framework of time-dependent density functional theory, we obtain high-order harmonics of photon energies up to 10 Up from bilayer crystals with an interlayer spacing d = 70 Å. At grazing incidence, a clear double-plateau structure is observed in the harmonic spectrum. The photon energy of the second plateau far beyond atomic-like harmonics can be well explained by the inclusion of backscattering of ionized electrons. Ab initio simulations reveal that the cutoff of the second plateau is continuously extended with an increasing d. Our classical calculations predict that the maximum electronic kinetic energy is linearly dependent on d over a wide range. Moreover, the harmonic yield in the second plateau is significantly enhanced by increases in the wavelength of the driving laser. Owing to the confined spreading of the electronic wave packet, a beneficial wavelength scaling of λ2.85 is obtained. This study therefore establishes a novel and efficient way of producing high-energy light source based on layered nanostructures.

Crystal Symmetry and Polarization of High-order Harmonics in ZnO

We carried out a joint theoretical and experimental study of the polarization of high-order harmonics generated from ZnO by intense infrared laser pulses. Experimentally we found that the dependence of parallel and perpendicular polarizations on the crystal orientation for all odd harmonics are nearly identical, but they are quite different from even harmonics which also show little order dependence. A one-dimensional two-band model, combined with a linear coupled excitation model, is shown to be able to explain the observed polarization behavior, including low-order harmonics. We further note that the same odd/even order contrast have been reported in a number of other crystals, despite that the harmonics were perceived to be generated via entirely different mechanisms. We demonstrated that this universality is governed by crystal symmetry, not by specific mechanisms. Thus, polarization measurements of harmonics offers a powerful pure optical method for determining the crystal axes as well as monitoring their ultrafast changes when crystals are undergoing deformation. In addition, the ellipticity of harmonic has been studied. It shows that ellipticity of high-order harmonics from solids can be tuned precisely by changing the bond structure of the sample.

Quantum-trajectory analysis for charge transfer in solid materials induced by strong laser fields

We investigate the dependence of charge transfer on the intensity of driving laser field when SiO2 crystal is irradiated by an 800 nm laser. It is surprising that the direction of charge transfer undergoes a sudden reversal when the driving laser intensity exceeds critical values with different carrier envelope phases. By applying quantum-trajectory analysis, we find that the Bloch oscillation plays an important role in charge transfer in solid. Also, we study the interaction of strong laser with gallium nitride (GaN) that is widely used in optoelectronics. A pump-probe scheme is applied to control the quantum trajectories of the electrons in the conduction band. The signal of charge transfer is controlled successfully by means of theoretically proposed approach.

Population Redistribution among Multiple Electronic States of Molecular Nitrogen Ions in Strong Laser Fields

We carry out a combined theoretical and experimental investigation on the population distributions in the ground and excited states of tunnel ionized N2 molecules at various driver wavelengths in the near- and mid-infrared range. Our results reveal that efficient couplings (i.e., population exchanges) between the ground state and the excited states occur in strong laser fields. The couplings result in the population inversion between the ground and the excited states at the wavelengths near 800 nm, which is verified by our experiment by observing the amplification of a seed at ~391 nm. The result provides insight into the mechanism of free-space nitrogen ion lasers generated in remote air with strong femtosecond laser pulses.
