Exciton-roton mode in moir\'e fractional Chern insulators

Moir\'e fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) are a novel class of quantum matter that realizes fractional quantum Hall (FQH) physics in zero magnetic field and provides a platform for exploring unconventional collective excitations. Here we show that hybridization between the magneto-roton and moir\'e interband excitations gives rise to an exciton-roton mode absent in continuum FQH systems in the long-wavelength limit. Using exact diagonalization and a variational Bethe-Salpeter equation for twisted MoTe$_2$, we demonstrate that this hybridization is controlled by the quantum geometry and yields a mode that combines excitonic optical response with the characteristic FCI roton minimum. The resulting exciton-roton remains low-lying, with excitation energy below the interband transition, and acquires optical activity, leading to a double-peak spectroscopic signature. These results identify optical spectroscopy as a direct probe of collective excitations in moir\'e FCIs.

Manipulating Charge Distribution in Moir\'e Superlattices by Light

In ordinary solids, nonlinear optical responses are typically studied in terms of unit-cell averages due to the angstr\"om-scale lattice constants. In contrast, moir\'e superlattices, characterized by a large length scale, unlock an often-overlooked degree of freedom: intra-supercell spatial variations of local observables. Here, we formulate the second-order direct current (DC) charge response in a spatially resolved manner, showing that even uniform optical illumination can drive a static, spatially non-uniform charge redistribution within a supercell. This effect is ubiquitous and cannot be forbidden by any crystalline symmetries. Furthermore, we identify a dominant contribution arising from diverging analytical response coefficients, which leads to linear-in-time growth of the redistribution in the absence of relaxation. This growth is driven by the convergence or divergence of local DC photocurrents. Applying our theory to twisted bilayer MoTe$_2$, we demonstrate strong, highly tunable charge modulation controlled by light intensity and frequency, opening a route to in situ, all-optical control of moir\'e-periodic electrostatic potentials. Our work underscores the importance of intra-cell degrees of freedom, which enable a qualitatively richer class of nonlinear optical responses in moir\'e superlattices.

Unusual topological polar texture in moir\'e ferroelectrics

Topological polar textures in ferroelectrics have attracted significant interest for their potential for energy-efficient and high-density data storage and processing. Among these, polar merons and antimerons are predicted in strained and twisted bilayers of inversion symmetry broken systems. However, experimental observation of these polar textures within twisted two-dimensional van der Waals (2D vdW) materials remains challenging. Here, we utilize vector piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) to reconstruct the polarization fields in R-type marginally twisted hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). We observe alternating out-of-plane (OOP) polarizations at domain regions and in-plane (IP) vortex-like polarization patterns along domain walls (DWs), indicative of a network of polar merons and antimerons. Notably, the OOP polarization exhibits three polarity reversals across a DW. Similar polar textures are identified in marginally twisted MoSe2 and WSe2 homobilayers. Our theoretical simulations attribute these unusual polarization reversals near the DWs to the competition between moir\'e ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity. These results provide experimental evidence of complex polar textures in moir\'e ferroelectrics, offering new insights into the electronic band topology in twisted transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs).

Magnetorotons in Moir\'e Fractional Chern Insulators

The discovery of fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) unlocks exciting opportunities to explore emergent physical excitations arising from topological and geometric effects in novel phases of quantum matter. Here we investigate the intraband neutral excitations, namely magnetorotons, in moir\'e FCIs within twisted $\rm{MoTe}_2$ by applying the Girvin, MacDonald, and Platzman (GMP) ansatz together with the method of dynamical geometric response. We reveal the universal existence of the finite-momentum magnetorotons in moir\'e FCIs and predict their characteristic scales. Furthermore, we explore the geometric nature of magnetorotons in the long-wavelength limit, identifying their gapped chiral nature with angular momentum-2, which originates from the momentum-space incompressibility of FCIs. Utilizing the excellent tunability of moir\'e systems, we extend our analysis to other incompressible phases and uncover the dynamical properties of geometric excitations influenced by quantum phase transitions. Finally, we provide experimental proposals for detecting and advancing the study of intraband neutral excitations in moir\'e FCIs.

Deep Band Crossings Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Effects

Nonlinear optical (NLO) effects in materials with band crossings have attracted significant research interests due to the divergent band geometric quantities around these crossings. Most current research has focused on band crossings between the valence and conduction bands. However, such crossings are absent in insulators, which are more relevant for NLO applications. In this work, we demonstrate that NLO effects can be significantly enhanced by band crossings within the valence or conduction bands, which we designate as "deep band crossings" (DBCs). As an example, in two dimensions, we show that shift conductivity can be substantially enhanced or even divergent due to a mirror-protected "deep Dirac nodal point". In three dimensions, we propose GeTe as an ideal material where shift conductivity is enhanced by "deep Dirac nodal lines". The ubiquity of this enhancement is further confirmed by high-throughput calculations. Other types of DBCs and NLO effects are also discussed. By manipulating band crossings between arbitrary bands, our work offers a simple, practical, and universal way to greatly enhance NLO effects.

Fractional Chern insulators in moir\'e flat bands with high Chern numbers

Recent discoveries of zero-field fractional Chern insulators in moir\'e materials have attracted intensive research interests. However, most current theoretical and experimental attempts focus on systems with low Chern number bands, in analogy to the Landau levels. Here we propose candidate material systems for realizing fractional Chern insulators with higher Chern numbers. The material setup involves $\Gamma$-valley twisted homobilayer transition metal dichalcogenides in proximity to a skyrmion lattice. The skyrmion exchange potential induces a flat band with a high Chern number $C = -2$. Using the momentum-space projected exact diagonalization method, we perform a comprehensive study at various filling factors, confirming the generalized Jain series. Our research provides theoretical guidance on realizing unconventional fractional Chern insulators beyond the Landau level picture.

Stabilizing fractional Chern insulators via exchange interaction in moir\'e systems

Recent experimental discovery of fractional Chern insulator in moir\'e Chern band in twisted transition metal dichalocogenide homobilayers has sparked intensive interest in exploring the ways of engineering band topology and correlated states in moir\'e systems. In this letter, we demonstrate that, with an additional exchange interaction induced by proximity effect, the topology and bandwidth of the moir\'e minibands of twisted $\mathrm{MoTe_2}$ homobilayers can be easily tuned. Fractional Chern insulators at -2/3 filling are found to appear at enlarged twist angles over a large range of twist angles with enhanced many-body gaps. We further discover a topological phase transition between the fractional Chern insulator, quantum anomalous Hall crystal, and charge density wave. Our results shed light on the interplay between topology and correlation physics.

Enhancement of Anomalous Boundary Current by High Temperature

Recently it is found that Weyl anomaly leads to novel anomalous currents in the spacetime with a boundary. However, the anomalous current is suppressed by the mass of charge carriers and the distance to the boundary, which makes it difficult to be measured. In this paper, we explore the possible mechanisms for the enhancement of anomalous currents. Interestingly, we find that the anomalous current can be significantly enhanced by the high temperature, which makes easier the experimental detection. For free theories, the anomalous current is proportional to the temperature in the high temperature limit. Note that the currents can be enhanced by thermal effects only at high temperatures. In general, this is not the case at low temperatures. For general temperatures, the absolute value of the current of Neumann boundary condition first decreases and then increases with the temperature, while the current of Dirichlet boundary condition always increases with the temperature. It should be mentioned that the enhancement does not have an anomalous nature. In fact, the so-called anomalous current in this paper is not always related to Weyl anomaly. Instead, it is an anomalous effect due to the boundary.
