A Staggered Discontinuous Galerkin Method for linear elasticity problem on Polytopal Meshes

This paper develops a novel staggered discontinuous Galerkin (SDG) method for linear elasticity based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. We construct symmetric stress spaces with normal continuity across element boundaries on arbitrary polytopal meshes, while approximating the displacement field using piecewise polynomial functions defined on the same meshes. The method is locking-free and satisfies a local balance of linear momentum and angular momentum. We present a comprehensive theoretical analysis, including proofs of stability and error estimates. The formulation admits a hybridizable structure, which significantly simplifies the numerical implementation. Numerical experiments validate the theoretical results and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Mixed Variational Formulation of Coupled Plates

This paper proposes a mixed variational formulation for the problem of two coupled plates with a rigid {junction}. The proposed mixed {formulation} introduces {the union of} stresses and moments as {an auxiliary variable}, which {are} commonly of great interest in practical applications. The primary challenge lies in determining a suitable {space involving} both boundary and junction conditions of the auxiliary variable. The {theory} of densely defined operators in Hilbert spaces is employed to define {a nonstandard Sobolev space} without the use of trace operators. The well-posedness is established for the mixed formulation. Based on these conditions, this paper provides a framework {of} conforming {mixed} finite element methods. Numerical experiments are given to validate the theoretical results.

An arbitrary order locking-free weak Galerkin method for linear elasticity problems based on a reconstruction operator

The weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method has shown great potential in solving various type of partial differential equations. In this paper, we propose an arbitrary order locking-free WG method for solving linear elasticity problems, with the aid of an appropriate $H(div)$-conforming displacement reconstruction operator. Optimal order locking-free error estimates in both the $H^1$-norm and the $L^2$-norm are proved, i.e., the error is independent of the $Lam\acute{e}$ constant $λ$. Moreover, the term $λ\|\nabla\cdot \mathbf{u}\|_k$ does not need to be bounded in order to achieve these estimates. We validate the accuracy and the robustness of the proposed locking-free WG algorithm by numerical experiments.

A Locking-Free Weak Galerkin Finite Element Method for Linear Elasticity Problems

In this paper, we introduce and analyze a lowest-order locking-free weak Galerkin (WG) finite element scheme for the grad-div formulation of linear elasticity problems. The scheme uses linear functions in the interior of mesh elements and constants on edges (2D) or faces (3D), respectively, to approximate the displacement. An $H(div)$-conforming displacement reconstruction operator is employed to modify test functions in the right-hand side of the discrete form, in order to eliminate the dependence of the $Lam\acute{e}$ parameter $λ$ in error estimates, i.e., making the scheme locking-free. The method works without requiring $λ\|\nabla\cdot \mathbf{u}\|_1$ to be bounded. We prove optimal error estimates, independent of $λ$, in both the $H^1$-norm and the $L^2$-norm. Numerical experiments validate that the method is effective and locking-free.

Supercloseness analysis and polynomial preserving recovery for a class of weak Galerkin method

In this paper, we analyze convergence and supercloseness properties of a class of weak Galerkin (WG) finite element methods for solving second-order elliptic problems. It is shown that the WG solution is superclose to the Lagrange type interpolation using Lobatto points. This supercloseness behavior is obtained through some newly designed stabilization terms. A post-processing technique using the polynomial preserving recovery (PPR) is introduced for WG approximation. Superconvergence analysis is carried out for the PPR approximation. Numerical examples are provided to verify our theoretical results.

A Weak Galerkin Finite Element Scheme for solving the stationary Stokes Equations

A weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method for solving the stationary Stokes equations in two- or three- dimensional spaces by using discontinuous piecewise polynomials is developed and analyzed. The variational form we considered is based on two gradient operators which is different from the usual gradient-divergence operators. The WG method is highly flexible by allowing the use of discontinuous functions on arbitrary polygons or polyhedra with certain shape regularity. Optimal-order error estimates are established for the corresponding WG finite element solutions in various norms. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the theoretical analysis of the new WG finite element scheme for Stokes problems.

A weak Galerkin finite element scheme with boundary continuity for second-order elliptic problems

A new weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method for solving the second-order elliptic problems on polygonal meshes by using polynomials of boundary continuity is introduced and analyzed. The WG method is utilizing weak functions and their weak derivatives which can be approximated by polynomials in different combination of polynomial spaces. Different combination gives rise to different weak Galerkin finite element methods, which makes WG methods highly flexible and efficient in practical computation. This paper explores the possibility of certain combination of polynomial spaces that minimize the degree of freedom in the numerical scheme, yet without losing the accuracy of the numerical approximation. Error estimates of optimal order are established for the corresponding WG approximations in both a discrete $H^1$ norm and the standard $L^2$ norm. In addition, the paper also presents some numerical experiments to demonstrate the power of the WG method. The numerical results show a great promise of the robustness, reliability, flexibility and accuracy of the WG method.

A Locking-Free Weak Galerkin Finite Element Method for Elasticity Problems in the Primal Formulation

This paper presents an arbitrary order locking-free numerical scheme for linear elasticity on general polygonal/polyhedral partitions by using weak Galerkin (WG) finite element methods. Like other WG methods, the key idea for the linear elasticity is to introduce discrete weak strain and stress tensors which are defined and computed by solving inexpensive local problems on each element. Such local problems are derived from weak formulations of the corresponding differential operators through integration by parts. Locking-free error estimates of optimal order are derived in a discrete $H^1$-norm and the usual $L^2$-norm for the approximate displacement when the exact solution is smooth. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency, accuracy, and the locking-free property of the weak Galerkin finite element method.
