Towards Effective Generation of Interactive Visualizations with Vibe Coding: An Empirical Study

Constructing interactive visualizations has traditionally required substantial human effort, involving both technical implementation and design decision-making. Recently, vibe coding, a programming paradigm leveraging Large Language Models to generate, interpret, and refactor code from natural language specifications, has emerged as a promising approach to reduce the burden. However, the capabilities and limitations of vibe coding in building interactive visualizations remain unexplored. To address this gap, we conducted a user study with 78 participants that were tasked with constructing interactive visualizations using vibe coding. We further collected users feedback through questionnaires, interviews, and case analyses. Based on this study, we examine (1) the capabilities and (2) user experience of vibe coding in generating interactive visualizations, and (3) the practical human-agent collaboration strategies adopted. Our findings provide the first systematic assessment of vibe coding for interactive visualization construction, revealing both its strengths and limitations, explaining the shift in developer labor and identifying the hybrid collaboration strategies participants adopted. Furthermore, our study offers insights for more intuitive and robust vibe coding practices.

DEBATE: A Large-Scale Benchmark for Evaluating Opinion Dynamics in Role-Playing LLM Agents

Accurately modeling opinion change through social interactions is crucial for understanding and mitigating polarization, misinformation, and societal conflict. Recent work simulates opinion dynamics with role-playing LLM agents (RPLAs), but multi-agent simulations often display unnatural group behavior, such as premature convergence, and lack empirical benchmarks for assessing alignment with real human group interactions. We introduce DEBATE, a large-scale benchmark for evaluating the authenticity of opinion dynamics in multi-agent RPLA simulations. DEBATE contains multi-round public messages and private Likert-scale beliefs from U.S.-based participants across 107 topics; the cleaned benchmark used in our experiments contains 2,788 participants in 697 groups, enabling evaluation at the utterance and group levels and supporting future individual-level analyses. We instantiate "digital twin" RPLAs with seven LLMs and evaluate across two settings: next-message prediction and full dynamics simulation, using stance-based opinion-dynamics metrics. In zero-shot settings, RPLA groups exhibit strong opinion convergence relative to human groups. On the held-out group split, supervised fine-tuning (SFT) for Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct improves auxiliary stance alignment and reduces group-level convergence error, though discrepancies in opinion change and belief updating remain. DEBATE enables rigorous benchmarking of simulated opinion dynamics and supports future research on aligning multi-agent RPLAs with realistic human interactions.

FaithBench: A Diverse Hallucination Benchmark for Summarization by Modern LLMs

Summarization is one of the most common tasks performed by large language models (LLMs), especially in applications like Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). However, existing evaluations of hallucinations in LLM-generated summaries, and evaluations of hallucination detection models both suffer from a lack of diversity and recency in the LLM and LLM families considered. This paper introduces FaithBench, a summarization hallucination benchmark comprising challenging hallucinations made by 10 modern LLMs from 8 different families, with ground truth annotations by human experts. ``Challenging'' here means summaries on which popular, state-of-the-art hallucination detection models, including GPT-4o-as-a-judge, disagreed on. Our results show GPT-4o and GPT-3.5-Turbo produce the least hallucinations. However, even the best hallucination detection models have near 50\% accuracies on FaithBench, indicating lots of room for future improvement. The repo is https://github.com/vectara/FaithBench

Is Semantic Chunking Worth the Computational Cost?

Recent advances in Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems have popularized semantic chunking, which aims to improve retrieval performance by dividing documents into semantically coherent segments. Despite its growing adoption, the actual benefits over simpler fixed-size chunking, where documents are split into consecutive, fixed-size segments, remain unclear. This study systematically evaluates the effectiveness of semantic chunking using three common retrieval-related tasks: document retrieval, evidence retrieval, and retrieval-based answer generation. The results show that the computational costs associated with semantic chunking are not justified by consistent performance gains. These findings challenge the previous assumptions about semantic chunking and highlight the need for more efficient chunking strategies in RAG systems.

DocAsRef: An Empirical Study on Repurposing Reference-Based Summary Quality Metrics Reference-Freely

Automated summary quality assessment falls into two categories: reference-based and reference-free. Reference-based metrics, historically deemed more accurate due to the additional information provided by human-written references, are limited by their reliance on human input. In this paper, we hypothesize that the comparison methodologies used by some reference-based metrics to evaluate a system summary against its corresponding reference can be effectively adapted to assess it against its source document, thereby transforming these metrics into reference-free ones. Experimental results support this hypothesis. After being repurposed reference-freely, the zero-shot BERTScore using the pretrained DeBERTa-large-MNLI model of <0.5B parameters consistently outperforms its original reference-based version across various aspects on the SummEval and Newsroom datasets. It also excels in comparison to most existing reference-free metrics and closely competes with zero-shot summary evaluators based on GPT-3.5.
