Toward Deeper Environmental Understanding: Event-Level Sensing for Intelligent 6G ISAC

The intelligent evolution of mission-critical networks, such as the Internet of vehicles (IoV) and the low-altitude economy (LAE), requires sixth-generation (6G) networks to move beyond discrete physical parameter estimation toward deeper environmental understanding. However, existing integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) studies mainly focus on target-level sensing, which provides fragmented snapshots of the physical world and lacks the behavioral semantic capability to interpret intent. This limitation hinders the intelligent evolution of such networks and prevents 6G from acquiring the essential sensing foundation to evolve into an "intelligent service engine". To bridge this gap, ISAC must advance toward event-level sensing, which models continuous-time states to enable persistent recognition and prediction of target intent and behavioral semantics. This article presents a comprehensive overview of event-level sensing in 6G ISAC networks. We first introduce its fundamental concepts, sensing types, and representative scenarios. We then review key enabling techniques across waveform design, target state estimation and tracking, and event recognition. Furthermore, focusing on IoV and LAE scenarios, we discuss representative applications of ISAC event-level sensing and the intelligent enhancement of downstream operational functions enabled by event-level information. Finally, we highlight future research trends and potential directions to further advance ISAC event-level sensing toward intelligent and proactive 6G networks.

Cooperative Sensing in Cell-free Massive MIMO ISAC Systems: Performance Optimization and Signal Processing

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), as a technology enabled seamless connection between communication and sensing, is regarded a core enabling technology for these applications. However, the accuracy of single-node sensing in ISAC system is limited, prompting the emergence of multi-node cooperative sensing. In multi-node cooperative sensing, the synchronization error limits the sensing accuracy, which can be mitigated by the architecture of cell-free massive multi-input multi-output (CF-mMIMO), since the multiple nodes are interconnected via optical fibers with high synchronization accuracy. However, the multi-node cooperative sensing in CF-mMIMO ISAC systems faces the following challenges: 1) The joint optimization of placement and resource allocation of distributed access points (APs) to improve the sensing performance in multi-target detection scenario is difficult; 2) The fusion of the sensing information from distributed APs with multi-view discrepancies is difficult. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a joint placement and antenna resource optimization scheme for distributed APs to minimize the sensing Cramr-Rao bound for targets' parameters within the area of interest. Then, a symbol-level fusion-based multi-dynamic target sensing (SL-MDTS) scheme is provided, effectively fusing sensing information from multiple APs. The simulation results validate the effectiveness of the joint optimization scheme and the superiority of the SL-MDTS scheme. Compared to state-of-the-art grid-based symbol-level sensing information fusion schemes, the proposed SL-MDTS scheme improves the accuracy of localization and velocity estimation by 44 % and 41.4 %, respectively.

Integrated Sensing and Communication enabled Multiple Base Stations Cooperative UAV Detection

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) exhibits notable potential for sensing the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), facilitating real-time monitoring of UAVs for security insurance. Due to the low sensing accuracy of single base stations (BSs), a cooperative UAV sensing method by multi-BS is proposed in this paper to achieve high-accuracy sensing. Specifically, a multiple signal classification (MUSIC)-based symbol-level fusion method is proposed for UAV localization and velocity estimation, consisting of a single-BS preprocessing step and a lattice points searching step. The preprocessing procedure enhances the single-BS accuracy by superposing multiple spectral functions, thereby establishing a reference value for subsequent lattice points searching. Furthermore, the lattice point with minimal error compared to the preprocessing results is determined as the fusion result. Extensive simulation results reveal that the proposed symbol-level fusion method outperforms the benchmarking methods in localization and velocity estimation.

Integrated Sensing and Communication enabled Multiple Base Stations Cooperative Sensing Towards 6G

Driven by the intelligent applications of sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication systems such as smart city and autonomous driving, which connect the physical and cyber space, the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) brings a revolutionary change to the base stations (BSs) of 6G by integrating radar sensing and communication in the same hardware and wireless resource. However, with the requirements of long-range and accurate sensing in the applications of smart city and autonomous driving, the ISAC enabled single BS still has a limitation in the sensing range and accuracy. With the networked infrastructures of mobile communication systems, multi-BS cooperative sensing is a natural choice satisfying the requirement of long-range and accurate sensing. In this article, the framework of multi-BS cooperative sensing is proposed, breaking through the limitation of single-BS sensing. The enabling technologies, including unified ISAC performance metrics, ISAC signal design and optimization, interference management, cooperative sensing algorithms, are introduced in details. The performance evaluation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of multi-BS cooperative sensing schemes. With ISAC enabled multi-BS cooperative sensing (ISAC-MCS), the intelligent infrastructures connecting physical and cyber space can be established, ushering the era of 6G promoting the intelligence of everything.

Symbol-level Integrated Sensing and Communication enabled Multiple Base Stations Cooperative Sensing

With the support of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technology, mobile communication system will integrate the function of wireless sensing, thereby facilitating new intelligent applications such as smart city and intelligent transportation. Due to the limited sensing accuracy and sensing range of single base station (BS), multi-BS cooperative sensing can be applied to realize high-accurate, long-range and continuous sensing, exploiting the specific advantages of large-scale networked mobile communication system. This paper proposes a cooperative sensing method suitable to mobile communication systems, which applies symbol-level sensing information fusion to estimate the location and velocity of target. With the demodulation symbols obtained from the echo signals of multiple BSs, the phase features contained in the demodulation symbols are used in the fusion procedure, which realizes cooperative sensing with the synchronization level of mobile communication system. Compared with the signal-level fusion in the area of distributed aperture coherence-synthetic radars, the requirement of synchronization is much lower. When signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is -5 dB, it is evaluated that symbol-level multi-BS cooperative sensing effectively improves the accuracy of distance and velocity estimation of target. Compared with single-BS sensing, the accuracy of distance and velocity estimation is improved by 40% and 72%, respectively. Compared with data-level multi-BS cooperative sensing based on maximum likelihood (ML) estimation, the accuracy of location and velocity estimation is improved by 12% and 63%, respectively. This work may provide a guideline for the design of multi-BS cooperative sensing system to exploit the widely deployed networked mobile communication system.
