Quantum Geometry of Altermagnetic Magnons Probed by Light

Magnons with momentum-dependent chirality are a key signature of altermagnets. We identify bicircular light as a smoking-gun optical probe for chiral altermagnetic magnons, selectively targeting their quantum geometry induced by an alternation of magnonic chirality. We show that in $d$-wave altermagnets, under a canting magnetic field, the altermagnetic magnons realize a nontrivial quantum geometry, resulting in an enhancement of the nonlinear second-order light-magnon interactions. We find that the scattering of bicircular pulses probes the present magnonic quantum geometry, even if the magnonic topology is trivial. Hence, our findings establish bicircular Raman response as an optical effect of choice to identify altermagnetic magnons. As such, we propose a universal experimental protocol to distinguish altermagnets from antiferromagnets by detecting their magnon chirality patterns with light, independently of the underlying magnon topology.

Topological surface magnon-polariton in an insulating canted antiferromagnet

Excitation and control of antiferromagnetic magnon modes lie at the heart of coherent antiferromagnetic spintronics. Here, we propose a topological surface magnon-polariton as a new approach in the prototypical magnonic material hematite. We show that in an insulating canted antiferromagnet, where strong-coupled magnon-photon modes can be achieved using electrical on-chip layouts, a surface magnon-polariton mode exists in the gap of the bulk magnon-photon bands. The emergence of surface magnon-polariton mode is further attributed to the nontrivial topology of bulk magnon-photon bands. Magnon-photon coupling enhances the Berry curvature near the anticrossing points, leading to a topological bulk Chern band associated with the surface magnon-polaritons. Our work provides a general principle for the utilization of optomagnetic properties in antiferromagnets, with an illustration of its experimental feasibility and wide generality as manifested in hematite.

Altermagnetic Shastry-Sutherland fullerene networks

The interplay between quantum magnetism and many-body physics is of fundamental importance in condensed matter physics. %Magnetic exchange interactions in frustrated lattices give rise to rich phase diagrams. Molecular building blocks provide a versatile platform for exploring the exotic quantum phases arising from complex orderings in frustrated lattices. Here we demonstrate a showcase system based on altermagnetic Shastry-Sutherland fullerene networks, which can be constructed from a C$_{40}$ molecular synthon with two effective spin-1/2 sites due to the resonance structures. The charge-neutral, pure-carbon systems exhibit an altermagnetic ground state with fully compensated spins arranged in alternating C$_{40}$ units in a 2D rutile-like lattice, leading to $d$-wave splitting of the spin-polarised electronic band structure and strong chiral-split magnons. We report a rich phase diagram including altermagentic, quantum spin liquid, plaquette, and dimer phases, which can be accessed via moderate strains. Our findings open a new avenue for exploring quantum many-body physics based on scalable, chemically-feasible, molecular quantum materials.

Controlling spin currents with magnon interference in a canted antiferromagnet

Controlling spin current lies at the heart of spintronics and its applications. The sign of spin currents is monotonous in ferromagnets once the current direction is determined. Spin currents in antiferromagnets can possess opposite polarization, but requires enormous magnetic fields to lift the degeneracy. Controlling spin currents with different polarization is urgently demanded but remains hitherto elusive. Here, we demonstrate the control of spin currents at room temperature by magnon interference in a canted antiferromagnet, hematite recently also classified as an altermagnet. Magneto-optical characterization by Brillouin light scattering revealed that the spatial periodicity of the beating patterns was tunable via the microwave frequency. The inverse spin-Hall voltage changed sign as the frequency was scanned, i.e., a frequency-controlled switching of polarization in pure spin currents was obtained. Our work marks the use of antiferromagnetic magnon interference to control spin currents, which substantially extends the horizon for the emerging field of coherent antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Broad-Wavevector Spin Pumping of Flat-Band Magnons

We report the experimental observation of large spin pumping signals in YIG/Pt system driven by broad-wavevector spin-wave spin current. 280 nm-wide microwave inductive antennas offer broad-wavevector excitation which, in combination with quasi-flatband of YIG, allows a large number of magnons to participate in spin pumping at a given frequency. Through comparison with ferromagnetic resonance spin pumping, we attribute the enhancement of the spin current to the multichromatic magnons. The high efficiency of spin current generation enables us to uncover nontrivial propagating properties in ultra-low power regions. Additionally, our study achieves the spatially separated detection of magnons, allowing the direct extraction of the decay length. The synergistic combination of the capability of broad-wavevector excitation, enhanced voltage signals, and nonlocal detection provides a new avenue for the electrical exploration of spin waves dynamics.

Observation of spin-wave moiré edge and cavity modes in twisted magnetic lattices

We report the experimental observation of the spin-wave moiré edge and cavity modes using Brillouin light scattering spectro-microscopy in a nanostructured magnetic moiré lattice consisting of two twisted triangle antidot lattices based on an yttrium iron garnet thin film. Spin-wave moiré edge modes are detected at an optimal twist angle and with a selective excitation frequency. At a given twist angle, the magnetic field acts as an additional degree of freedom for tuning the chiral behavior of the magnon edge modes. Micromagnetic simulations indicate that the edge modes emerge within the original magnonic band gap and at the intersection between a mini-flatband and a propagation magnon branch. Our theoretical estimate for the Berry curvature of the magnon-magnon coupling suggests a non-trivial topology for the chiral edge modes and confirms the key role played by the dipolar interaction. Our findings shed light on the topological nature of the magnon edge mode for emergent moiré magnonics.

Long-distance propagation of high-velocity antiferromagnetic spin waves

We report on coherent propagation of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin waves over a long distance ($\sim$10 $μ$m) at room temperature in a canted AFM $α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Unprecedented high group velocities (up to 22.5 km/s) are characterized by microwave transmission using all-electrical spin wave spectroscopy. We derive analytically AFM spin-wave dispersion in the presence of the DMI which accounts for our experimental results. The AFM spin waves excited by nanometric coplanar waveguides with large wavevectors enter the exchange regime and follow a quasi-linear dispersion relation. Fitting of experimental data with our theoretical model yields an AFM exchange stiffness length of 1.7 angstrom. Our results provide key insights on AFM spin dynamics and demonstrate high-speed functionality for AFM magnonics.
