Free fibrations, lax colimits and Kan extensions for $(\infty,2)$-categories

In the first part of this paper we study fibrations of $(\infty,2)$-categories. We give a simple characterization of such fibrations in terms of a certain square being a pullback, and apply this to show that in some cases $(\infty,2)$-categories of functors and partially (op)lax transformations preserve fibrations. We also describe free fibrations of $(\infty,2)$-categories, including in the case where we only ask for (co)cartesian lifts of specified 1- and 2-morphisms in the base, and describe the right adjoint to pullback from fibrations to such partial fibrations along an arbitrary functor. In the second part of the paper we apply these results to study colimits and Kan extensions of $(\infty,2)$-categories. Most notably, we give a fibrational description of both partially (op)lax and weighted (co)limits of $(\infty,2)$-categories and construct partially lax Kan extensions. Among other results, we also include a model-independent version of cofinality for $(\infty,2)$-categories and briefly consider presentable $(\infty,2)$-categories, characterizing them as accessible localizations of presheaves of $\infty$-categories.

Normed equivariant ring spectra and higher Tambara functors

In this paper we extend equivariant infinite loop space theory to take into account multiplicative norms: For every finite group $G$, we construct a multiplicative refinement of the comparison between the $\infty$-categories of connective genuine $G$-spectra and space-valued Mackey functors, first proven by Guillou-May, and use this to give a description of connective normed equivariant ring spectra as space-valued Tambara functors. In more detail, we first introduce and study a general notion of homotopy-coherent normed (semi)rings, and identify these with product-preserving functors out of a corresponding $\infty$-category of bispans. In the equivariant setting, this identifies space-valued Tambara functors with normed algebras with respect to a certain normed monoidal structure on grouplike $G$-commutative monoids in spaces. We then show that the latter is canonically equivalent to the normed monoidal structure on connective $G$-spectra given by the Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel norms. Combining our comparison with results of Elmanto-Haugseng and Barwick-Glasman-Mathew-Nikolaus, we produce normed ring structures on equivariant algebraic K-theory spectra.

Straightening for lax transformations and adjunctions of $(\infty,2)$-categories

We prove an unstraightening result for lax transformations between functors from an arbitrary $(\infty,2)$-category to that of $(\infty,2)$-categories. We apply this to study partially (op)lax and weighted (co)limits, giving fibrational descriptions of such (co)limits for diagrams valued in $(\infty,2)$-categories, to characterize adjoints in $(\infty,2)$-categories of functors and (op)lax transformations, and to prove a mate correspondence between lax transformations that are componentwise right adjoints and oplax transformations that are componentwise left adjoints, for such transformations among functors between arbitrary $(\infty,2)$-categories.

Lax monoidal adjunctions, two-variable fibrations and the calculus of mates

We provide a calculus of mates for functors to the $\infty$-category of $\infty$-categories and extend Lurie's unstraightening equivalences to show that (op)lax natural transformations correspond to maps of (co)cartesian fibrations that do not necessarily preserve (co)cartesian edges. As a sample application we obtain an equivalence between lax symmetric monoidal structures on right adjoint functors and oplax symmetric monoidal structures on the left adjoint functors between symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories that is compatible with both horizontal and vertical composition of such structures. As the technical heart of the paper we study various new types of fibrations over a product of two $\infty$-categories. In particular, we show how they can be dualised over one of the two factors and how they encode functors out of the Gray tensor product of $(\infty, 2)$-categories.

Homotopical commutative rings and bispans

We prove that commutative semirings in a cartesian closed presentable $\infty$-category, as defined by Groth, Gepner, and Nikolaus, are equivalent to product-preserving functors from the $(2,1)$-category of bispans of finite sets. In other words, we identify the latter as the Lawvere theory for commutative semirings in the $\infty$-categorical context. This implies that connective commutative ring spectra can be described as grouplike product-preserving functors from bispans of finite sets to spaces. A key part of the proof is a localization result for $\infty$-categories of spans, and more generally for $\infty$-categories with factorization systems, that may be of independent interest.

Higher categories

Invited contribution to the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics. We give an introduction to the homotopical theory of higher categories, focused on motivating the definitions of the basic objects, namely $\infty$-categories and $(\infty,n)$-categories.

On the tensor product of enriched $\infty$-categories

We show that the tensor product of $\infty$-categories enriched in a suitable monoidal $\infty$-category preserves colimits in each variable, fixing a mistake in an earlier paper of Gepner and the author. We also prove that essentially surjective and fully faithful functors form a factorization system on enriched $\infty$-categories, and that the tensor product and internal hom are compatible with this.

Enriched homotopy-coherent structures

We introduce a general notion of enrichment for homotopy-coherent algebraic structures described by Segal conditions, using the framework of "algebraic patterns" developed in our previous work. This recovers several known examples of enriched structures, including enriched $\infty$-categories, enriched $\infty$-operads, and enriched $\infty$-properads. As new examples we discuss enriched modular $\infty$-operads, enriched $n$-fold $\infty$-categories, and a non-iterative definition of enriched $(\infty,n)$-categories.

Two-variable fibrations, factorisation systems and $\infty$-categories of spans

We prove a universal property for $\infty$-categories of spans in the generality of Barwick's adequate triples, explicitly describe the cocartesian fibration corresponding to the span functor, and show that the latter restricts to a self-equivalence on the class of orthogonal adequate triples, which we introduce for this purpose. As applications of the machinery we develop we give a quick proof of Barwick's unfurling theorem, show that an orthogonal factorisation system arises from a cartesian fibration if and only if it forms an adequate triple (generalising work of Lanari), extend the description of dual (co)cartesian fibrations by Barwick, Glasman and Nardin to two-variable fibrations, explicitly describe parametrised adjoints (extending work of Torii), identify the orthofibration classifying the mapping category functor of an $(\infty,2)$-category (building on work of Abellán Garcia and Stern), formally identify the unstraightenings of the identity functor on the $\infty$-category of $\infty$-categories with the (op)lax under-categories of a point, and deduce a certain naturality property of the Yoneda embedding (answering a question of Clausen).

Some remarks on higher Morita categories

We take another look at the construction of double $\infty$-categories of algebras and bimodules and prove a few supplemental results about these, including a simpler proof of the Segal condition and a comparison between our construction and that of Lurie. We then take a more streamlined, inductive approach to the higher Morita categories of $E_{n}$-algebras and show that these deloop correctly.

From analytic monads to $\infty$-operads through Lawvere theories

We show that Lurie's model for $\infty$-operads (or more precisely a "flagged" or "pinned" version thereof) is equivalent to the analytic monads previously studied by Gepner, Kock, and the author, with an $\infty$-operad $\mathcal{O}$ corresponding to the monad for $\mathcal{O}$-algebras in spaces. In particular, the $\infty$-operad $\mathcal{O}$ is completely determined by this monad. To prove this we study the Lawvere theories of analytic monads, and show that these are precisely pinned $\infty$-operads in a slight (equivalent) variant of Lurie's definition, where finite pointed sets are replaced by spans in finite sets.

The AKSZ Construction in Derived Algebraic Geometry as an Extended Topological Field Theory

We construct a family of oriented extended topological field theories using the AKSZ construction in derived algebraic geometry, which can be viewed as an algebraic and topological version of the classical AKSZ field theories that occur in physics. These have as their targets higher categories of symplectic derived stacks, with higher morphisms given by iterated Lagrangian correspondences. We define these, as well as analogous higher categories of oriented derived stacks and iterated oriented cospans, and prove that all objects are fully dualizable. Then we set up a functorial version of the AKSZ construction, first implemented in this context by Pantev-Toën-Vaquié-Vezzosi, and show that it induces a family of symmetric monoidal functors from oriented stacks to symplectic stacks. Finally, we construct forgetful functors from the unoriented bordism $(\infty,n)$-category to cospans of spaces, and from the oriented bordism $(\infty,n)$-category to cospans of spaces equipped with an orientation; the latter combines with the AKSZ functors by viewing spaces as constant stacks, giving the desired field theories.

$\infty$-operads as symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories

We use Lurie's symmetric monoidal envelope functor to give two new descriptions of $\infty$-operads: as certain symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories whose underlying symmetric monoidal $\infty$-groupoids are free, and as certain symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories equipped with a symmetric monoidal functor to finite sets (with disjoint union as tensor product). The latter leads to a third description of $\infty$-operads, as a localization of a presheaf $\infty$-category, and we use this to give a simple proof of the equivalence between Lurie's and Barwick's models for $\infty$-operads.

Envelopes for Algebraic Patterns

We generalize Lurie's construction of the symmetric monoidal envelope of an $\infty$-operad to the setting of algebraic patterns. This envelope becomes fully faithful when sliced over the envelope of the terminal object, and we characterize its essential image. Using this, we prove a comparison result that allows us to compare analogues of $\infty$-operads over various algebraic patterns. In particular, we show that the $G$-$\infty$-operads of Nardin-Shah are equivalent to "fibrous patterns" over the $(2, 1)$-category $\mathrm{Span}(\mathbb{F}_G)$ of spans of finite $G$-sets. When $G$ is trivial this means that Lurie's $\infty$-operads can equivalently be defined over $\mathrm{Span}(\mathbb{F})$ instead of $\mathbb{F}_*$.

On distributivity in higher algebra I: The universal property of bispans

Structures where we have both a contravariant (pullback) and a covariant (pushforward) functoriality that satisfy base change can be encoded by functors out of ($\infty$-)categories of spans (or correspondences). In this paper we study the more complicated setup where we have two pushforwards (an "additive" and a "multiplicative" one), satisfying a distributivity relation. Such structures can be described in terms of bispans (or polynomial diagrams). We show that there exist $(\infty,2)$-categories of bispans, characterized by a universal property: they corepresent functors out of $\infty$-categories of spans where the pullbacks have left adjoints and certain canonical 2-morphisms (encoding base change and distributivity) are invertible. This gives a universal way to obtain functors from bispans, which amounts to upgrading "monoid-like" structures to "ring-like" ones. For example, symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories can be described as product-preserving functors from spans of finite sets, and if the tensor product is compatible with finite coproducts our universal property gives the canonical semiring structure using the coproduct and tensor product. More interestingly, we encode the additive and multiplicative transfers on equivariant spectra as a functor from bispans in finite $G$-sets, extend the norms for finite étale maps in motivic spectra to a functor from certain bispans in schemes, and make $\mathrm{Perf}(X)$ for $X$ a spectral Deligne--Mumford stack a functor of bispans using a multiplicative pushforward for finite étale maps in addition to the usual pullback and pushforward maps. Combining this with the polynomial functoriality of $K$-theory constructed by Barwick, Glasman, Mathew, and Nikolaus, we obtain norms on algebraic $K$-theory spectra.

Free algebras through Day convolution

Building on the foundations in our previous paper, we study Segal conditions that are given by finite products, determined by structures we call cartesian patterns. We set up Day convolution on presheaves in this setting and use it to give conditions under which there is a colimit formula for free algebras and other left adjoints. This specializes to give a simple proof of Lurie's results on operadic left Kan extensions and free algebras for symmetric $\infty$-operads.

$\infty$-operads via symmetric sequences

We construct a generalization of the Day convolution tensor product of presheaves that works for certain double $\infty$-categories. Using this construction, we obtain an $\infty$-categorical version of the well-known description of (one-object) operads as associative algebras in symmetric sequences; more generally, we show that (enriched) $\infty$-operads with varying spaces of objects can be described as associative algebras in a double $\infty$-category of symmetric collections.

Homotopy-coherent algebra via Segal conditions

Many homotopy-coherent algebraic structures can be described by Segal-type limit conditions determined by an "algebraic pattern", bywhich we mean an $\infty$-category equipped with a factorization system and a collection of "elementary" objects. Examples of structures that occur as such "Segal $\mathcal{O}$-spaces" for an algebraic pattern $\mathcal{O}$ include $\infty$-categories, $(\infty,n)$-categories, $\infty$-operads, $\infty$-properads, and algebras for an $\infty$-operad in spaces. In the first part of this paper we set up a general frameworkn for algebraic patterns and their Segal objects, including conditions under which the latter are preserved by left and right Kan extensions. In particular, we obtain necessary and sufficent conditions on a pattern $\mathcal{O}$ for free Segal $\mathcal{O}$-spaces to be described by an explicit colimit formula, in which case we say that $\mathcal{O}$ is "extendable". In the second part of the paper we explore the relationship between extendable algebraic patterns and polynomial monads, by which we mean cartesian monads on presheaf $\infty$-categories that are accessible and preserve weakly contractible limits. We first show that the free Segal $\mathcal{O}$-space monad for an extendable pattern $\mathcal{O}$ is always polynomial. Next, we prove an $\infty$-categorical version of Weber's Nerve Theorem for polynomial monads, and use this to define a canonical extendable pattern from any polynomial monad, whose Segal spaces are equivalent to the algebras of the monad. These constructions yield functors between polynomial monads and extendable algebraic patterns, and we show that these exhibit full subcategories of "saturated" algebraic patterns and "complete" polynomial monads as localizations, and moreover restrict to an equivalence between the $\infty$-categories of saturated patterns and complete polynomial monads.
