New Role of Null Lagrangians in Derivation of Equations of Motion for Dynamical Systems

The space of Null Lagrangians is the least investigated territory in dynamics since they are identically sent to zero by their Euler-Lagrange operator and thereby having no effects on equations of motion. A humble effort to discover the relevance of these Null Lagrangians in dynamics is made by introducing a generalized procedure (with respect to the recent procedure introduced by the authors of this paper) that takes advantage of the null-ness of these Lagrangians to construct non-standard Lagrangians that represent a range of interesting dynamical systems. By using the generalized procedure, derivation of equations of motion for a harmonic oscillator as well as for the Bateman and Duffing oscillators is presented. The obtained results demonstrate a new role played by the null Lagrangians and their corresponding non-standard Lagrangians in describing linear and nonlinear, and dissipative and non-dissipative dynamical systems.

General Null Lagrangians and Their Novel Role in Classical Dynamics

A method for constructing general null Lagrangians and their higher harmonics is presented for dynamical systems with one degree of freedom. It is shown that these Lagrangians can be used to obtain non-standard Lagrangians, which give equations of motion for the law of inertia and some dissipative dynamical systems. The necessary condition for deriving equations of motion by using null Lagrangians is presented, and it is demonstrated that this condition plays the same role for null Lagrangians as the Euler-Lagrange equation plays for standard and non-standard Lagrangians. The obtained results and their applications establish a novel role of null Lagrangians in classical dynamics.

Beltrami state in black-hole accretion disk: A magnetofluid approach

Using the magnetofluid unification framework, we show that the accretion disk plasma (embedded in the background geometry of a blackhole) can relax to a class of states known as the Beltrami-Bernoulli (BB) equilibria. Modeling the disk plasma as a Hall MHD system, we find that the space-time curvature can significantly alter the magnetic/velocity decay rate as we move away from the compact object; the velocity profiles in BB states, for example, deviate substantially from the predicted corresponding geodesic velocity profiles. These departures imply a rich interplay of plasma dynamics and general relativity revealed by examining the corresponding Bernoulli condition representing "homogeneity" of total energy. The relaxed states have their origin in the constraints provided by the two helicity invariants of Hall MHD. These helicities conspire to introduce a new oscillatory length scale into the system that is strongly influenced by relativistic and thermal effects.

Novel mechanism for vorticity generation in black-hole accretion disks

Vorticity generation in accretion disks around Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes is investigated in the context of magnetofluid dynamics derived for both General Relativity (GR), and modified gravity formulations. In both cases, the Kerr geometry leads to a "stronger" generation of vorticity than its Schwarzschild counterpart. Of the two principal sources, the relativistic drive peaks near the innermost stable circular orbit (isco), whereas the baroclinic drive dominates at larger distances. Consequences of this new relativistic vorticity source are discussed in several astrophysical settings.

Magnetofluid Dynamics in curved spacetime

A grand unified field $\mathcal{M}^{μν}$ is constructed from Maxwell's Field tensor and appropriately modified flow field, both non-minimally coupled to gravity, to analyze the dynamics of hot charged fluids in curved background space-time. With a suitable $3+1$ decomposition, this new formalism of the hot fluid is then applied to investigate the vortical dynamics of the system. Finally, the equilibrium state for plasma with non-linear coupling through Ricci scalar $R$ to gravity is investigated to derive a double Beltrami equation in curved space-time.

Fermions in Loop Quantum Cosmology and the Role of Parity

Fermions play a special role in homogeneous models of quantum cosmology because the exclusion principle prevents them from forming sizable matter contributions. They can thus describe the matter ingredients only truly microscopically and it is not possible to avoid strong quantum regimes by positing a large matter content. Moreover, possible parity violating effects are important especially in loop quantum cosmology whose basic object is a difference equation for the wave function of the universe defined on a discrete space of triads. The two orientations of a triad are interchanged by a parity transformation, which leaves the difference equation invariant for ordinary matter. Here, we revisit and extend loop quantum cosmology by introducing fermions and the gravitational torsion they imply, which renders the parity issue non-trivial. A treatable locally rotationally symmetric Bianchi model is introduced which clearly shows the role of parity. General wave functions cannot be parity-even or odd, and parity violating effects in matter influence the microscopic big bang transition which replaces the classical singularity in loop quantum cosmology.

Canonical Gravity with Fermions

Canonical gravity in real Ashtekar-Barbero variables is generalized to allow for fermionic matter. The resulting torsion changes several expressions in Holst's original vacuum analysis, which are summarized here. This in turn requires adaptations to the known loop quantization of gravity coupled to fermions, which is discussed on the basis of the classical analysis. As a result, parity invariance is not manifestly realized in loop quantum gravity.

Dirac Fields in Loop Quantum Gravity and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

Big Bang nucleosynthesis requires a fine balance between equations of state for photons and relativistic fermions. Several corrections to equation of state parameters arise from classical and quantum physics, which are derived here from a canonical perspective. In particular, loop quantum gravity allows one to compute quantum gravity corrections for Maxwell and Dirac fields. Although the classical actions are very different, quantum corrections to the equation of state are remarkably similar. To lowest order, these corrections take the form of an overall expansion-dependent multiplicative factor in the total density. We use these results, along with the predictions of Big Bang nucleosynthesis, to place bounds on these corrections.

The radiation equation of state and loop quantum gravity corrections

The equation of state for radiation is derived in a canonical formulation of the electromagnetic field. This allows one to include correction terms expected from canonical quantum gravity and to infer implications to the universe evolution in radiation dominated epochs. Corrections implied by quantum geometry can be interpreted in physically appealing ways, relating to the conformal invariance of the classical equations.

Tracking quintessence and k-essence in a general cosmological background

We derive conditions for stable tracker solutions for both quintessence and k-essence in a general cosmological background, H^2 \propto f(ρ). We find that tracker solutions are possible only when η= d ln f /d ln ρis constant, aside from a few special cases, which are enumerated. Expressions for the quintessence or k-essence equation of state are derived as a function of ηand the equation of state of the dominant background component.
