Lattices of strongly reflexive masa-bimodules

We characterise the density of the positive rank one subspace of a masa-bimodule in terms of its support. We prove that strongly reflexive masa-bimodules form a Boolean lattice under naturally defined operations. We examine the lattice-theoretic properties of the class of strongly reflexive masa-bimodules that are also operator systems and some natural subclasses thereof, and provide a topological description of the lattice operations in the case the masa-bimodules arise from closed subsets of a locally compact group.

Unique Games and Games Based on Groups

We study unique games and estimate some of their values. We prove that if a unique game has a quantum-assisted value close to 1, then it must have a perfect deterministic strategy. We introduce a family of unique games based on groups that generalize XOR games, and show that when the group is the cyclic group of order 3, then these games correspond to a 3-labelling problem for directed graphs.

Orthogonalisability of joins of graphs

A graph is said to be orthogonalisable if the set of real symmetric matrices whose off-diagonal pattern is prescribed by its edges contains an orthogonal matrix. We determine some necessary and some sufficient conditions on the sizes of the connected components of two graphs for their join to be orthogonalisable. In some cases, those conditions coincide, and we present several families of joins of graphs that are orthogonalisable.

Values of cooperative quantum games

We develop a resource-theoretical approach that allows us to quantify values of two-player, one-round cooperative games with quantum inputs and outputs, as well as values of quantum probabilistic hypergraphs. We analyse the quantum game values arising from the type hierarchy of quantum no-signalling correlations, establishing tensor norm expressions for each of the correlation types. As a consequence, we provide metric characterisations of state convertibility via LOSR and LOCC.En route, we obtain an alternative description of the maximal tensor products of ternary rings of operators.

Bordering of Symmetric Matrices and an Application to the Minimum Number of Distinct Eigenvalues for the Join of Graphs

An important facet of the inverse eigenvalue problem for graphs is to determine the minimum number of distinct eigenvalues of a particular graph. We resolve this question for the join of a connected graph with a path. We then focus on bordering a matrix and attempt to control the change in the number of distinct eigenvalues induced by this operation. By applying bordering techniques to the join of graphs, we obtain numerous results on the nature of the minimum number of distinct eigenvalues as vertices are joined to a fixed graph.

Spectral arbitrariness for trees fails spectacularly

If $G$ is a graph and $\mathbf{m}$ is an ordered multiplicity list which is realizable by at least one symmetric matrix with graph $G$, what can we say about the eigenvalues of all such realizing matrices for $\mathbf{m}$? It has sometimes been tempting to expect, especially in the case that $G$ is a tree, that any spacing of the multiple eigenvalues should be realizable. In 2004, however, F. Barioli and S. Fallat produced the first counterexample: a tree on 16 vertices and an ordered multiplicity list for which every realizing set of eigenvalues obeys a nontrivial linear constraint. We extend this by giving an infinite family of trees and ordered multiplicity lists whose sets of realizing eigenvalues are very highly constrained, with at most 5 degrees of freedom, regardless of the size of the tree in this family. In particular, we give the first examples of multiplicity lists for a tree which impose nontrivial nonlinear eigenvalue constraints and produce an ordered multiplicity list which is achieved by a unique set of eigenvalues, up to shifting and scaling.

Quantum teleportation in the commuting operator framework

We introduce a notion of teleportation scheme between subalgebras of semi-finite von Neumann algebras in the commuting operator model of locality. Using techniques from subfactor theory, we present unbiased teleportation schemes for relative commutants $N'\cap M$ of a large class of finite-index inclusions $N\subseteq M$ of tracial von Neumann algebras, where the unbiased condition means that no information about the teleported observables are contained in the classical communication sent between the parties. For a large class of subalgebras $N$ of matrix algebras $M_n(\mathbb{C})$, including those relevant to hybrid classical/quantum codes, we show that any tight teleportation scheme for $N$ necessarily arises from an orthonormal unitary Pimsner-Popa basis of $M_n(\mathbb{C})$ over $N'$, generalising work of Werner. Combining our techniques with those of Brannan-Ganesan-Harris, we compute quantum chromatic numbers for a variety of quantum graphs arising from finite-dimensional inclusions $N\subseteq M$.

Paths are generically realisable

We show that every $0$-$1$ multiplicity matrix for a simple graph $G$ is generically realisable for $G$. In particular, every multiplicity matrix for a path is generically realisable. We use this result to provide several families of joins of graphs that are realisable by a matrix with only two distinct eigenvalues.

Orthogonal symmetric matrices and joins of graphs

We introduce a notion of compatibility for multiplicity matrices. This gives rise to a necessary condition for the join of two (possibly disconnected) graphs $G$ and $H$ to be the pattern of an orthogonal symmetric matrix, or equivalently, for the minimum number of distinct eigenvalues $q$ of $G\vee H$ to be equal to two. Under additional hypotheses, we show that this necessary condition is also sufficient. As an application, we prove that $q(G\vee H)$ is either two or three when $G$ and $H$ are unions of complete graphs, and we characterise when each case occurs.

State convertibility in the von Neumann algebra framework

We establish a generalisation of the fundamental state convertibility theorem in quantum information to the context of bipartite quantum systems modelled by commuting semi-finite von Neumann algebras. Namely, we establish a generalisation to this setting of Nielsen's theorem on the convertibility of quantum states under local operations and classical communication (LOCC) schemes. Along the way, we introduce an appropriate generalisation of LOCC operations and connect the resulting notion of approximate convertibility to the theory of singular numbers and majorisation in von Neumann algebras. As an application of our result in the setting of $II_1$-factors, we show that the entropy of the singular value distribution relative to the unique tracial state is an entanglement monotone in the sense of Vidal, thus yielding a new way to quantify entanglement in that context. Building on previous work in the infinite-dimensional setting, we show that trace vectors play the role of maximally entangled states for general $II_1$-factors. Examples are drawn from infinite spin chains, quasi-free representations of the CAR, and discretised versions of the CCR.

Schur multipliers and mixed unitary maps

We consider the tensor product of the completely depolarising channel on $d\times d$ matrices with the map of Schur multiplication by a $k \times k$ correlation matrix and characterise, via matrix theory methods, when such a map is a mixed (random) unitary channel. When $d=1$, this recovers a result of O'Meara and Pereira, and for larger $d$ is equivalent to a result of Haagerup and Musat that was originally obtained via the theory of factorisation through von Neumann algebras. We obtain a bound on the distance between a given correlation matrix for which this tensor product is nearly mixed unitary and a correlation matrix for which such a map is exactly mixed unitary. This bound allows us to give an elementary proof of another result of Haagerup and Musat about the closure of such correlation matrices without appealing to the theory of von Neumann algebras.

A Nordhaus-Gaddum conjecture for the minimum number of distinct eigenvalues of a graph

We propose a Nordhaus-Gaddum conjecture for $q(G)$, the minimum number of distinct eigenvalues of a symmetric matrix corresponding to a graph $G$: for every graph $G$ excluding four exceptions, we conjecture that $q(G)+q(G^c)\le |G|+2$, where $G^c$ is the complement of $G$. We compute $q(G^c)$ for all trees and all graphs $G$ with $q(G)=|G|-1$, and hence we verify the conjecture for trees, unicyclic graphs, graphs with $q(G)\le 4$, and for graphs with $|G|\le 7$.

Complexity and capacity bounds for quantum channels

We generalise some well-known graph parameters to operator systems by considering their underlying quantum channels. In particular, we introduce the quantum complexity as the dimension of the smallest co-domain Hilbert space a quantum channel requires to realise a given operator system as its non-commutative confusability graph. We describe quantum complexity as a generalised minimum semidefinite rank and, in the case of a graph operator system, as a quantum intersection number. The quantum complexity and a closely related quantum version of orthogonal rank turn out to be upper bounds for the Shannon zero-error capacity of a quantum channel, and we construct examples for which these bounds beat the best previously known general upper bound for the capacity of quantum channels, given by the quantum Lovász theta number.

Graph rigidity for unitarily invariant matrix norms

A rigidity theory is developed for bar-joint frameworks in linear matrix spaces endowed with a unitarily invariant norm. Analogues of Maxwell's counting criteria are obtained and minimally rigid matrix frameworks are shown to belong to the matroidal class of (k,l)-sparse graphs for suitable k and l. A characterisation of infinitesimal rigidity is obtained for product norms and it is shown that K_6 - e (respectively, K_7) is the smallest minimally rigid graph for the class of 2 x 2 symmetric (respectively, hermitian) matrices with the trace norm.

Positive extensions of Schur multipliers

We introduce partially defined Schur multipliers and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of extensions to fully defined positive Schur multipliers, in terms of operator systems canonically associated with their domains. We use these results to study the problem of extending a positive definite function defined on a symmetric subset of a locally compact group to a positive definite function defined on the whole group.

Commutants of weighted shift directed graph operator algebras

We consider non-selfadjoint operator algebras $\mathfrak{L}(G,λ)$ generated by weighted creation operators on the Fock-Hilbert spaces of countable directed graphs $G$. These algebras may be viewed as noncommutative generalizations of weighted Bergman space algebras, or as weighted versions of the free semigroupoid algebras of directed graphs. A complete description of the commutant is obtained together with broad conditions that ensure the double commutant property. It is also shown that the double commutant property may fail for $\mathfrak{L}(G,λ)$ in the case of the single vertex graph with two edges and a suitable choice of left weight function $λ$.

Completely bounded norms of right module maps

It is well-known that if T is a D_m-D_n bimodule map on the m by n complex matrices, then T is a Schur multiplier and $\|T\|_{cb}=\|T\|$. If n=2 and T is merely assumed to be a right D_2-module map, then we show that $\|T\|_{cb}=\|T\|$. However, this property fails if m>1 and n>2. For m>1 and n=3,4 or $n\geq m^2$, we give examples of maps T attaining the supremum C(m,n)=\sup \|T\|_{cb} taken over the contractive, right D_n-module maps on M_{m,n}, we show that C(m,m^2)=\sqrt{m} and succeed in finding sharp results for C(m,n) in certain other cases. As a consequence, if H is an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space and D is a masa in B(H), then there is a bounded right D-module map on the compact operators K(H) which is not completely bounded.

Grothendieck's inequality in the noncommutative Schwartz space

In the spirit of Grothendieck's famous inequality from the theory of Banach spaces, we study a sequence of inequalities for the noncommutative Schwartz space, a Fréchet algebra of smooth operators. These hold in non-optimal form by a simple nuclearity argument. We obtain optimal versions and reformulate the inequalities in several different ways.
