An asymptotic shape optimization problem for Riesz means of Laplacian eigenvalues

We review our recent results on the problem of optimizing Riesz means of Laplace eigenvalues among convex sets of given measure in the regime where the cut-off parameter in the definition of the Riesz means tends to infinity. We show that for a certain range of Riesz exponents, the optimizing sets converge to a ball. We also present some new results where we optimize over disjoint unions of convex sets.

Eigenvalue asymptotics of Müller minimizers for atoms and molecules

We study the spectral properties of minimizers of the Müller functional for atoms and molecules with $N$ electrons and total nuclear charge $Z$. We prove that under some suitable assumptions on $Z$ and $N$, the $k$-th eigenvalue of a Müller minimizer $γ_*$ behaves as $A_* k^{-8/3}$ when $k\to \infty$, with a constant $A_*>0$ determined explicitly by the density of $γ_*$. In particular, in the atomic case $V=Z|x|^{-1}$ our assumption holds if $Z$ is sufficiently large and $N\le Z- C_0 Z^{1/3}$. While our proof is inspired by Sobolev's work on the asymptotic behavior of the one-particle density matrix of Schrödinger ground states, the analysis in Müller theory requires several new ingredients concerning both the singular behavior of the integral kernel of the minimizers near the diagonal and the decay properties at infinity.

Liquid Drop Model for Nuclear Matter in the Low Density Limit

We consider the liquid drop model with a positive background density in the thermodynamic limit. We prove a two-term asymptotics for the ground state energy per unit volume in the dilute limit. Our proof justifies the expectation that optimal configurations consist of droplets of unit size that arrange themselves according to minimizers for the Jellium problem for point particles. In particular, we provide the first rigorous derivation of what is known as the gnocchi phase in astrophysics.

Uniform bounds for Neumann heat kernels and their traces in convex sets

We prove a bound on the heat trace of the Neumann Laplacian on a convex domain that captures the first two terms in its small-time expansion, but is valid for all times and depends on the underlying domain only through very simple geometric characteristics. This is proved via a precise and uniform expansion of the on-diagonal heat kernel close to the boundary. Most of our results are valid without the convexity assumption and we also consider two-term asymptotics for the heat trace for Lipschitz domains.

Improved semiclassical eigenvalue estimates for the Laplacian and the Landau Hamiltonian

The Berezin--Li--Yau and the Kröger inequalities show that Riesz means of order $\geq 1$ of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a domain $Ω$ of finite measure are bounded in terms of their semiclassical limit expressions. We show that these inequalities can be improved by a multiplicative factor that depends only on the dimension and the product $\sqrtΛ|Ω|^{1/d}$, where $Λ$ is the eigenvalue cut-off parameter in the definition of the Riesz mean. The same holds when $|Ω|^{1/d}$ is replaced by a generalized inradius of $Ω$. Finally, we show similar inequalities in two dimensions in the presence of a constant magnetic field.

Semiclassical inequalities for Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians on convex domains

We are interested in inequalities that bound the Riesz means of the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians in terms of their semiclassical counterpart. We show that the classical inequalities of Berezin-Li-Yau and Kröger, valid for Riesz exponents $γ\geq 1$, extend to certain values $γ<1$, provided the underlying domain is convex. We also study the corresponding optimization problems and describe the implications of a possible failure of Pólya's conjecture for convex sets in terms of Riesz means. These findings allow us to describe the asymptotic behavior of solutions of a spectral shape optimization problem for convex sets.

Openness of shape optimizers in higher-order and non-scalar problems

We consider the first eigenvalues of the polyharmonic, Lamé and Stokes operators with Dirichlet boundary conditions on sets of given finite measure. It is shown that a quasi-open set for which this eigenvalue is minimal is open. This removes dimensional restrictions in earlier works. We use Campanato theory, which works well in the present higher order or non-scalar setting.

Eigenvalue lower bounds through a generalized inradius

Lieb has shown a lower bound on the smallest Dirichlet eigenvalue of the Laplace operator in terms of a generalized inradius. We derive similar bounds for Robin eigenvalues, for eigenvalues of the polyharmonic operator and the sub-Laplacian on the Heisenberg group. We propose a method based on Hardy inequalities that is different from Lieb's approach.

Sharp quantitative integral inequalities for harmonic extensions

We prove a quantitative version of a sharp integral inequality by Hang, Wang, and Yan for both the Poisson operator and its adjoint. Our result has the strongest possible norm and the optimal stability exponent. This stability exponent is not necessarily equal to 2, displaying the same phenomenon that Figalli and Zhang observed for the $p$-Sobolev inequality.

Riesz means asymptotics for Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians on Lipschitz domains

We consider the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians on a bounded domain with Lipschitz boundary and prove two-term asymptotics for their Riesz means of arbitrary positive order. Moreover, when the underlying domain is convex, we obtain universal, non-asymptotic bounds that correctly reproduce the two leading terms in the asymptotics and depend on the domain only through simple geometric characteristics. Important ingredients in our proof are non-asymptotic versions of various Tauberian theorems.

Symmetry and symmetry breaking in interpolation inequalities for two-dimensional spinors -- Preliminary results

On the two-dimensional Euclidean space, we study a spinorial analogue of the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality involving weighted gradient norms. This (SCKN) inequality is equivalent to a spinorial Gagliardo-Nirenberg type interpolation inequality on a cylinder as well as to an interpolation inequality involving Aharonov-Bohm magnetic fields, which was analyzed in a paper of 2020. We examine the symmetry properties of optimal functions by linearizing the associated functional around radial minimizers. We prove that the stability of the linearized problem is equivalent to the positivity of a $2\times2$ matrix-valued differential operator. We study the positivity issue via a combination of analytical arguments and numerical computations. In particular, our results provide numerical evidence that the region of symmetry breaking extends beyond what was previously known, while the threshold of the known symmetry region is linearly stable. Altogether, we obtain refined estimates of the phase transition between symmetry and symmetry breaking. Our results also put in evidence striking differences with the three-dimensional (SCKN) inequality that was recently investigated.

Spectral asymptotics for Robin Laplacians on Lipschitz sets

We prove two-term spectral asymptotics for the Riesz means of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a Lipschitz domain with Robin boundary conditions. The second term is the same as in the case of Neumann boundary conditions. This is valid for Riesz means of arbitrary positive order. For orders at least one and under additional assumptions on the function determining the boundary conditions we derive leading order asymptotics for the difference between Riesz means of Robin and Neumann eigenvalues.

Sharp stability for Sobolev and log-Sobolev inequalities, with optimal dimensional dependence

We prove a sharp quantitative version for the stability of the Sobolev inequality with explicit constants. Moreover, the constants have the correct behavior in the limit of large dimensions, which allows us to deduce an optimal quantitative stability estimate for the Gaussian log-Sobolev inequality with an explicit dimension-free constant. Our proofs rely on several ingredients such as competing symmetries, a flow based on continuous Steiner symmetrization that interpolates continuously between a function and its symmetric decreasing rearrangement, and refined estimates on the Sobolev functional in the neighborhood of the optimal Aubin--Talenti functions.

The sharp $σ_2$-curvature inequality on the sphere in quantitative form

Among all metrics on $\mathbb S^d$ with $d>4$ that are conformal to the standard metric and have positive scalar curvature, the total $σ_2$-curvature, normalized by the volume, is uniquely (up to Möbius transformations) minimized by the standard metric. We show that if a metric almost minimizes, then it is almost the standard metric (up to Möbius transformations). This closeness is measured in terms of Sobolev norms of the conformal factor, and we obtain the optimal stability exponents for two different notions of closeness. This is a stability result for an optimization problem whose Euler-Lagrange equation is fully nonlinear.
