Equivariant Iwasawa Theory for Ritter-Weiss Modules and Applications

We consider a finite, abelian, CM extension $H/F$ of a totally real number field $F$, and construct a $\mathbb{Z}_p[[G(H_\infty/F)]]-$module $\nabla_S^T(H_\infty)_p$, where $p>2$ is a prime and $H_\infty$ is the cyclotomic $\Bbb Z_p$-extension of $H$. This is the Iwasawa theoretic analogue of a module introduced by Ritter and Weiss in \cite{Ritter-Weiss} and studied further by Dasgupta and Kakde in \cite{Dasgupta-Kakde}. Our main result states that the $\Bbb Z_p[[G(H_\infty/F]]^-$-module $\nabla_S^T(H_\infty)_p$ is of projective dimension $1$, is quadratically presented, and that its Fitting ideal is principal, generated by an equivariant $p$-adic $L$-function $Θ_S^T(H_\infty/F)$. As a first application, we compute the Fitting ideal of an arithmetically interesting $\Bbb Z_p[[G(H_\infty/F)]]^-$-module $X_S^{T,-}$, which is a variant of the classical unramified Iwasawa module $X$ (the Galois group of the maximal abelian, unramified, pro-$p$ extension of $H_\infty$), extending earlier results of Greither-Kataoka-Kurihara \cite{Greither-Kataoka-Kurihara}. These are all instances of what is now called an Equivariant Main Conjecture in the Iwasawa theory of totally real number fields, and refine the classical main conjecture, proved by Wiles in \cite{wiles}. As a final application, we give a short, Iwasawa theoretic proof of the minus $p$-part of the far-reaching Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture for the Artin motive $h_{H/F}$, for all primes $p>2$, a result also obtained, independently and with different (Euler system) methods, by Bullack-Burns-Daoud-Seo \cite{Bullach-Burns-Daoud-Seo} and Dasgupta-Kakde-Silliman \cite{Dasgupta-Kakde-Silliman-ETNC}.

Iwasawa theory for branched $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-towers of finite graphs and Ihara zeta and $L$-functions

We revisit the theory of Ihara $L$-functions in the context initially studied by Bass and Hashimoto and more recently by Zakharov. In particular, we study if the Artin formalism is satisfied by these $L$-functions. As an application, we give a proof of the analogue of Iwasawa's asymptotic class number formula for the $p$-part of the number of spanning trees in branched $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-towers of finite connected graphs using Ihara zeta and $L$-functions. Moreover, we relate a generator for the characteristic ideal of the finitely generated torsion Iwasawa module that governs the growth of the $p$-part of the number of spanning trees in such towers with Ihara $L$-functions.

Structure of (Fine) Mordell--Weil Groups

In this article we study the algebraic structure of fine Mordell--Weil groups, plus/minus Mordell--Weil groups, Selmer groups, and plus/minus Selmer groups in the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of abelian number fields. As a first, we prove theorems on the equivariant structure of fine Mordell--Weil groups and plus/minus Mordell--Weil groups. In other words, we study the explicit shape of the fine, plus/minus objects as a $\Lambda(\mathcal{G})$-module with $\mathcal{G} \simeq \mathbb{Z}_p \times G$ and $G$ a finite abelian group. We prove refinements of previously known results over $\mathbb{Q}$ for the classical Selmer group and the plus/minus Selmer group, and subsequently also the Shafarevich--Tate group, and the plus/minus Shafarevich--Tate group. This gives new evidence towards an affirmative answer for the Kurihara--Pollack problem.

An Integral Equivariant Refinement of the Iwasawa Main Conjecture for Totally Real Fields

For an abelian, CM extension $H/F$ of a totally real number field $F$, we improve upon the reformulation of the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture for the Artin motive $h_{H/F}$ by Atsuta-Kataoka in \cite{Atsuta-Kataoka-ETNC} and extend the results proved in \cite{Bullach-Burns-Daoud-Seo}, \cite{Dasgupta-Kakde-Silliman-ETNC}, \cite{gambheera-popescu} and \cite{Dasgupta-Kakde} on conjectures by Burns-Kurihara-Sano \cite{Burns-Kurihara-Sano} and Kurihara \cite{Kurihara}. Then, we consider the $\mathbb{Z}_p[[Gal(H_\infty/F)]]-$module $X_S^{T}$ where $p>2$ is a prime and $H_{\infty}$ is the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p-$ extension of $H$. This is a generalization of the classical unramified Iwasawa module $X$. By taking the projective limits of the results proved at finite layers of the Iwasawa tower, as our main result, extending the earlier results of Gambheera-Popescu in \cite{gampheera-popescu-RW}, we calculate the Fitting ideal of $X_S^{T,-}$ for non-empty $T$, which is an integral equivariant refinement of the Iwasawa main conjecture for totally real fields proved by Wiles. We also give a conjectural answer to the Fitting ideal of the module $X^-$.

On the $p$-ranks of class groups of certain Galois extensions

Let $p$ be an odd prime, let $N$ be a prime with $N \equiv 1 \pmod{p}$, and let $ζ_p$ be a primitive $p$-th root of unity. We study the $p$-rank of the class group of $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_p, N^{1/p})$ using Galois cohomological methods and obtain an exact formula for the $p$-rank in terms of the dimensions of certain Selmer groups. Using our formula, we provide a numerical criterion to establish upper and lower bounds for the $p$-rank, analogous to the numerical criteria provided by F.~Calegari--M.~Emerton and K.~Schaefer--E.~Stubley for the $p$-ranks of the class group of $\mathbb{Q}(N^{1/p})$. In the case $p=3$, we use Redei matrices to provide a numerical criterion to exactly calculate the $3$-rank, and also study the distribution of the $3$-ranks as $N$ varies through primes which are $4,7 \pmod{9}$.

Iwasawa theory for branched $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-towers of finite graphs

We initiate the study of Iwasawa theory for branched $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-towers of finite connected graphs. These towers are more general than what have been studied so far, since the morphisms of graphs involved are branched covers, a particular kind of harmonic morphisms of graphs. We prove an analogue of Iwasawa's asymptotic class number formula for the $p$-part of the number of spanning trees in this setting. Moreover, we find an explicit generator for the characteristic ideal of the torsion Iwasawa module governing the growth of the $p$-part of the number of spanning trees in such towers.

An unconditional main conjecture in Iwasawa theory and applications

We improve upon the recent keystone result of Dasgupta-Kakde on the $\Bbb Z[G(H/F)]^-$-Fitting ideals of certain Selmer modules $Sel_S^T(H)^-$ associated to an abelian, CM extension $H/F$ of a totally real number field $F$ and use this to compute the $\Bbb Z_p[[G(H_\infty/F)]]^-$-Fitting ideal of the Iwasawa module analogues $Sel_S^T(H_\infty)_p^-$ of these Selmer modules, where $H_\infty$ is the cyclotomic $\Bbb Z_p$-extension of $H$, for an odd prime $p$. Our main Iwasawa theoretic result states that the $\Bbb Z_p[[G(H_\infty/F]]^-$-module $Sel_S^T(H_\infty)_p^-$ is of projective dimension $1$, is quadratically presented, and that its Fitting ideal is principal, generated by an equivariant $p$-adic $L$-function $Θ_S^T(H_\infty/F)$. Further, we establish a perfect duality pairing between $Sel_S^T(H_\infty)_p^-$ and a certain $\Bbb Z_p[[G(H_\infty/F)]]^-$-module $\mathcal M_S^T(H_\infty)^-$, essentially introduced earlier by Greither-Popescu. As a consequence, we recover the Equivariant Main Conjecture for the Tate module $T_p(\mathcal M_S^T(H_\infty))^-$, proved by Greither-Popescu under the hypothesis that the classical Iwasawa $μ$-invariant associated to $H$ and $p$ vanishes. As a further consequence, we give an unconditional proof of the refined Coates-Sinnott Conjecture, proved by Greither-Popescu under the same $μ=0$ hypothesis, and also recently proved unconditionally but with different methods by Johnston-Nickel, regarding the $\Bbb Z[G(H/F)]$-Fitting ideals of the higher Quillen $K$-groups $K_{2n-2}(\mathcal O_{H,S})$, for all $n\geq 2$. Finally, we combine the techniques developed in the process with the method of ''Taylor-Wiles primes'' to strengthen further the keystone result of Dasgupta-Kakde and prove, as a consequence, a conjecture of Burns-Kurihara-Sano on Fitting ideals of Selmer groups of CM number fields.
