First Light Results from the Hermes Spectrograph at the AAT

The High Efficiency and Resolution Multi Element Spectrograph, HERMES, is a facility-class optical spectrograph for the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). It is designed primarily for Galactic Archaeology, the first major attempt to create a detailed understanding of galaxy formation and evolution by studying the history of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. The goal of the GALAH survey is to reconstruct the mass assembly history of the Milky Way through a detailed chemical abundance study of one million stars. The spectrograph is based at the AAT and is fed by the existing 2dF robotic fiber positioning system. The spectrograph uses volume phase holographic gratings to achieve a spectral resolving power of 28,000 in standard mode and also provides a high-resolution mode ranging between 40,000 and 50,000 using a slit mask. The GALAH survey requires an SNR greater than 100 for a star brightness of V ?= 14 in an exposure time of one hour. The total spectral coverage of the four channels is about 100 nm between 370 and 1000 nm for up to 392 simultaneous targets within the 2-degree field of view. HERMES has been commissioned over three runs, during bright time in October, November, and December 2013, in parallel with the beginning of the GALAH pilot survey, which started in November 2013. We present the first-light results from the commissioning run and the beginning of the GALAH survey, including performance results such as throughput and resolution, as well as instrument reliability.

Isophotal shapes of early-type galaxies to very faint levels

We report on a study of the isophotal shapes of early-type galaxies, to very faint levels reaching ~ 0.1% of the sky brightness. The galaxies are from the Large Format Camera (LFC) fields obtained using the Palomar 5 m Hale telescope, with integrated exposures ranging from 1 to 4 hours in the SDSS r, i and z bands. The shapes of isophotes of early-type galaxies are important as they are correlated with the physical properties of the galaxies and are influenced by galaxy formation processes. In this paper we report on a sample of 132 E and SO galaxies in one LFC field. We have redshifts for 53 of these, obtained using AAOmega on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. The shapes of early-type galaxies often vary with radius. We derive average values of isophotal shape parameters in four different radial bins along the semi-major axis in each galaxy. We obtain empirical fitting formulae for the probability distribution of the sophotal parameters in each bin and investigate for possible correlations with other global properties of the galaxies. Our main finding is that the isophotal shapes of the inner regions are statistically different from those in the outer regions. This suggests that the outer and inner parts of early-type galaxies have evolved somewhat independently.

Abundances and density structure of the inner circumstellar ring around SN 1987A

We present optical spectroscopic data of the inner circumstellar ring around SN 1987A from the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) and the Very Large Telescope (VLT) between ~1400 and ~5000 days post-explosion. We also assembled the available optical and near-infrared line fluxes from the literature between ~300 and ~2000 days. These line light curves were fitted with a photoionization model to determine the density structure and the elemental abundances for the inner ring. We found densities ranging from 1x10^3 to 3x10^4 atoms cm^-3 and a total mass of the ionized gas of ~0.058 Msun within the inner ring. Abundances inferred from the optical and near-infrared data were also complemented with estimates of Lundqvist & Fransson (1996) based on ultraviolet lines. This way we found an He/H-ratio (by number of atoms) of 0.17+-0.06 which is roughly 30% lower than previously estimated and twice the solar and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) value. We found an N/O-ratio of 1.5+-0.7, and the total (C+N+O)/(H+He) abundance about 1.6 times its LMC value or roughly 0.6 times the most recent solar value. An iron abundance of 0.20+-0.11 times solar was found which is within the range of the estimates for the LMC. We also present late time (~5000 - 7500 days) line light curves of [O III], [Ne III], [Ne IV], [Ar III], [Ar IV], and [Fe VII] from observations with the VLT. We compared these with model fluxes and found that an additional 10^2 atoms cm^-3 component was required to explain the data of the highest ionization lines. Such low density gas is expected in the H II-region interior to the inner ring which likely extends also to larger radii at higher latitudes (out of the ring plane). At epochs later than ~5000 days our models underproduce the emission of most of these lines as expected due to the contribution from the interaction of the supernova ejecta with the ring.

The 2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO Survey: The spectroscopic QSO catalogue

We present the final spectroscopic QSO catalogue from the 2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO (2SLAQ) Survey. This is a deep, 18<g<21.85 (extinction corrected), sample aimed at probing in detail the faint end of the broad line AGN luminosity distribution at z<2.6. The candidate QSOs were selected from SDSS photometry and observed spectroscopically with the 2dF spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. This sample covers an area of 191.9 deg^2 and contains new spectra of 16326 objects, of which 8764 are QSOs, and 7623 are newly discovered (the remainder were previously identified by the 2QZ and SDSS surveys). The full QSO sample (including objects previously observed in the SDSS and 2QZ surveys) contains 12702 QSOs. The new 2SLAQ spectroscopic data set also contains 2343 Galactic stars, including 362 white dwarfs, and 2924 narrow emission line galaxies with a median redshift of z=0.22. We present detailed completeness estimates for the survey, based on modelling of QSO colours, including host galaxy contributions. This calculation shows that at g~21.85 QSO colours are significantly affected by the presence of a host galaxy up to redshift z~1 in the SDSS ugriz bands. In particular we see a significant reddening of the objects in g-i towards fainter g-band magnitudes. This reddening is consistent with the QSO host galaxies being dominated by a stellar population of age at least 2-3 Gyr. The 2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO survey: evolution of the clustering of luminous red galaxies since z = 0.6

We present an analysis of the small-to-intermediate scale clustering of samples of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the 2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO (2SLAQ) survey carefully matched to have the same rest-frame colours and luminosity. We study the spatial two-point auto-correlation function in both redshift-space and real-space of a combined sample of over 10,000 LRGs, which represent the most massive galaxies in the universe with stellar masses > 10^11 h^-1 M_sun and space densities 10^-4 h^-3 Mpc^-3. We find no significant evolution in the amplitude r_0 of the correlation function with redshift, but do see a slight decrease in the slope with increasing redshift over 0.19 < z < 0.55 and scales of 0.32 < r < 32 h^-1 Mpc. We compare our measurements with the predicted evolution of dark matter clustering and use the halo model to interpret our results. We find that our clustering measurements are inconsistent (>99.9% significance) with a passive model whereby the LRGs do not merge with one another; a model with a merger rate of 7.5 +/- 2.3% from z = 0.55 to z = 0.19 (i.e. an average rate of 2.4% Gyr^-1) provides a better fit to our observations. Our clustering and number density measurements are consistent with the hypothesis that the merged LRGs were originally central galaxies in different haloes which, following the merger of these haloes, merged to create a single Brightest Cluster Galaxy. In addition, we show that the small-scale clustering signal constrains the scatter in halo merger histories. When combined with measurements of the luminosity function, our results suggest that this scatter is sub-Poisson. While this is a generic prediction of hierarchical models, it has not been tested before.

Radio galaxies in the 2SLAQ Luminous Red Galaxy survey: II. The stellar populations of radio-loud and radio-quiet LRGs

We present an analysis of the optical spectra of a volume-limited sample of 375 radio galaxies at redshift 0.4 10^26 W/Hz) have younger stars and stronger emission lines than the less powerful sources. This suggests that we have located the threshold in radio power where strong emission lines "switch on", at radio powers of around 10^26 W/Hz. Except for the very powerful radio galaxies, the presence of a currently-active radio AGN does not appear to be correlated with any change in the observed stellar population of a luminous red galaxy at z~0.5.

2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO (2SLAQ) Survey: Evolution of the Most Massive Galaxies

The 2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO (2SLAQ) survey is a new survey of distant Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) and faint quasars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) multi-color photometric data and spectroscopically observed using the 2dF instrument on the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). In total, the 2SLAQ survey has measured over 11000 LRG redshifts, covering 180deg^2 of SDSS imaging data, from 87 allocated nights of AAT time. Over 90% of these galaxies are within the range 0.45 =3L*. When combined with the lower redshift SDSS LRGs, the evolution in the luminosity function of these LRGs is fully consistent with that expected from a simple passive (luminosity) evolution model. This observation suggests that at least half of the LRGs seen at z~0.2 must already have more than half their stellar mass in place by z~0.6, i.e., our observations are inconsistent with a majority of LRGs experiencing a major merger in the last 6 Gyrs. However, some "frosting" (i.e., minor mergers) has taken place with ~5% of LRGs showing some evidence of recent and/or on-going star-formation, but it only contributes ~1% of their stellar mass.

MegaZ-LRG: A photometric redshift catalogue of one million SDSS Luminous Red Galaxies

We describe the construction of MegaZ-LRG, a photometric redshift catalogue of over one million luminous red galaxies (LRGs) in the redshift range 0.4 < z < 0.7 with limiting magnitude i < 20. The catalogue is selected from the imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4. The 2dF-SDSS LRG and Quasar (2SLAQ) spectroscopic redshift catalogue of 13,000 intermediate-redshift LRGs provides a photometric redshift training set, allowing use of ANNz, a neural network-based photometric-redshift estimator. The rms photometric redshift accuracy obtained for an evaluation set selected from the 2SLAQ sample is sigma_z = 0.049 averaged over all galaxies, and sigma_z = 0.040 for a brighter subsample (i < 19.0). The catalogue is expected to contain ~5 per cent stellar contamination. The ANNz code is used to compute a refined star/galaxy probability based on a range of photometric parameters; this allows the contamination fraction to be reduced to 2 per cent with negligible loss of genuine galaxies. The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: correlation with the ROSAT-ESO Flux Limited X-ray (REFLEX) galaxy cluster survey

The ROSAT-ESO Flux Limited X-ray (REFLEX) galaxy cluster survey and the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) respectively comprise the largest, homogeneous X-ray selected cluster catalogue and completed galaxy redshift survey. In this work we combine these two outstanding datasets in order to study the effect of the large-scale cluster environment, as traced by X-ray luminosity, on the properties of the cluster member galaxies. We measure the LX-sigma relation from the correlated dataset and find it to be consistent with recent results found in the literature. Using a sample of 19 clusters with LX>=0.36*10^44 erg s^-1 in the (0.1-2.4 keV) band, and 49 clusters with lower X-ray luminosity, we find that the fraction of early spectral type (eta<=-1.4), passively-evolving galaxies is significantly higher in the high-LX sample within R200. We extend the investigation to include composite bJ cluster luminosity functions, and find that the characteristic magnitude of the Schechter-function fit to the early-type luminosity function is fainter for the high-LX sample compared to the low-LX sample (Delta M*=0.58+/-0.14). This seems to be driven by a deficit of such galaxies with M_bJ ~ -21. In contrast, we find no significant differences between the luminosity functions of star-forming, late-type galaxies. We believe these results are consistent with a scenario in which the high-LX clusters are more dynamically evolved systems than the low-LX clusters.

Calibrating Photometric Redshifts of Luminous Red Galaxies

We discuss the construction of a photometric redshift catalogue of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), emphasizing the principal steps necessary for constructing such a catalogue -- (i) photometrically selecting the sample, (ii) measuring photometric redshifts and their error distributions, (iii) and estimating the true redshift distribution. We compare two photometric redshift algorithms for these data and find that they give comparable results. Calibrating against the SDSS and SDSS-2dF spectroscopic surveys, we find that the photometric redshift accuracy is $σ\sim 0.03$ for redshifts less than 0.55 and worsens at higher redshift ($\sim 0.06$). These errors are caused by photometric scatter, as well as systematic errors in the templates, filter curves, and photometric zeropoints. We also parametrize the photometric redshift error distribution with a sum of Gaussians, and use this model to deconvolve the errors from the measured photometric redshift distribution to estimate the true redshift distribution. We pay special attention to the stability of this deconvolution, regularizing the method with a prior on the smoothness of the true redshift distribution. The methods we develop are applicable to general photometric redshift surveys.

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: the local E+A galaxy population

We select a sample of low-redshift (z ~ 0.1) E+A galaxies from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS). The spectra of these objects are defined by strong hydrogen Balmer absorption lines (H-delta, H-gamma, H-beta) combined with a lack of [OII] 3727A emission, together implying a recently-truncated burst of star formation. The E+A spectrum is thus a signpost to galaxies in the process of evolution. We quantify the local environments, clustering properties and luminosity function of the E+A galaxies. We find that the environments are consistent with the ensemble of 2dFGRS galaxies: low-redshift E+A systems are located predominantly in the field, existing as isolated objects or in poor groups. However, the luminosity distribution of galaxies selected using three Balmer absorption lines H-delta-gamma-beta appears more typical of ellipticals. Indeed, morphologically these galaxies are preferentially spheroidal (E/S0) systems. In a small but significant number we find evidence for recent major mergers, such as tidal tails. We infer that major mergers are one important formation mechanism for E+A galaxies, as suggested by previous studies. At low redshift the merger probability is high in the field and low in clusters, thus these recently-formed spheroidal systems do not follow the usual morphology-density relation for ellipticals. Regarding the selection of E+A galaxies: we find that basing the Balmer-line criterion solely on H-delta absorption leads to a significant sub-population of disk systems with detectable H-alpha emission. In these objects the [OII] emission is presumably either obscured by dust or present with a low signal-to-noise ratio, whilst the (H-gamma, H-beta) absorption features are subject to emission-filling.

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: Spherical Harmonics analysis of fluctuations in the final catalogue

We present the result of a decomposition of the 2dFGRS galaxy overdensity field into an orthonormal basis of spherical harmonics and spherical Bessel functions. Galaxies are expected to directly follow the bulk motion of the density field on large scales, so the absolute amplitude of the observed large-scale redshift-space distortions caused by this motion is expected to be independent of galaxy properties. By splitting the overdensity field into radial and angular components, we linearly model the observed distortion and obtain the cosmological constraint Omega_m^{0.6} sigma_8=0.46+/-0.06. The amplitude of the linear redshift-space distortions relative to the galaxy overdensity field is dependent on galaxy properties and, for L_* galaxies at redshift z=0, we measure beta(L_*,0)=0.58+/-0.08, and the amplitude of the overdensity fluctuations b(L_*,0) sigma_8=0.79+/-0.03, marginalising over the power spectrum shape parameters. Assuming a fixed power spectrum shape consistent with the full Fourier analysis produces very similar parameter constraints.

Substructure Analysis of Selected Low Richness 2dFGRS Clusters of Galaxies

Complementary one-, two-, and three-dimensional tests for detecting the presence of substructure in clusters of galaxies are applied to recently obtained data from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. The sample of 25 clusters used in this study includes 16 clusters not previously investigated for substructure. Substructure is detected at or greater than the 99% CL level in at least one test for 21 of the 25 clusters studied here. From the results, it appears that low richness clusters commonly contain subclusters participating in mergers. About half of the clusters have two or more components within 0.5 h^{-1} Mpc of the cluster centroid, and at least three clusters (Abell 1139, Abell 1663, and Abell S333) exhibit velocity-position characteristics consistent with the presence of possible cluster rotation, shear, or infall dynamics. The geometry of certain features is consistent with influence by the host supercluster environments. In general, our results support the hypothesis that low richness clusters relax to structureless equilibrium states on very long dynamical time scales (if at all).

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: The blue galaxy fraction and implications for the Butcher-Oemler effect

We derive the fraction of blue galaxies in a sample of clusters at z < 0.11 and the general field at the same redshift. The value of the blue fraction is observed to depend on the luminosity limit adopted, cluster-centric radius and, more generally, local galaxy density, but it does not depend on cluster properties. Changes in the blue fraction are due to variations in the relative proportions of red and blue galaxies but the star formation rate for these two galaxy groups remains unchanged. Our results are most consistent with a model where the star formation rate declines rapidly and the blue galaxies tend to be dwarfs and do not favour mechanisms where the Butcher-Oemler effect is caused by processes specific to the cluster environment.

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: Clustering properties of radio galaxies

The clustering properties of local, S_{1.4 GHz} > 1 mJy, radio sources are investigated for a sample of 820 objects drawn from the joint use of the FIRST and 2dF Galaxy Redshift surveys. To this aim, we present 271 new bj < 19.45 spectroscopic counterparts of FIRST radio sources to be added to those already introduced in Magliocchetti et al. (2002). The two-point correlation function for the local radio population is found to be entirely consistent with estimates obtained for the whole sample of 2dFGRS galaxies. We estimate the parameters of the real-space correlation function xi(r)=(r/r_0)^{-γ}, r_0=6.7^{+0.9}_{-1.1} Mpc and γ=1.6\pm 0.1, where h=0.7 is assumed. Different results are instead obtained if we only consider sources that present signatures of AGN activity in their spectra. These objects are shown to be very strongly correlated, with r_0=10.9^{+1.0}_{-1.2} Mpc and γ=2\pm 0.1, a steeper slope than has been claimed in other recent works. No difference is found in the clustering properties of radio-AGNs of different radio luminosity. These results show that AGN-fuelled sources reside in dark matter halos more massive than \sim 10^{13.4} M_{\sun}},higher the corresponding figure for radio-quiet QSOs. This value can be converted into a minimum black hole mass associated with radio-loud, AGN-fuelled objects of M_{BH}^{min}\sim 10^9 M_{\sun}. The above results then suggest -at least for relatively faint radio objects -the existence of a threshold black hole mass associated with the onset of significant radio activity such as that of radio-loud AGNs; however, once the activity is triggered, there appears to be no evidence for a connection between black hole mass and level of radio output. Galaxy ecology: groups and low-density environments in the SDSS and 2dFGRS

We analyse the observed correlation between galaxy environment and H-alpha emission line strength, using volume-limited samples and group catalogues of 24968 galaxies drawn from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (Mb<-19.5) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (Mr<-20.6). We characterise the environment by 1) Sigma_5, the surface number density of galaxies determined by the projected distance to the 5th nearest neighbour; and 2) rho1.1 and rho5.5, three-dimensional density estimates obtained by convolving the galaxy distribution with Gaussian kernels of dispersion 1.1 Mpc and 5.5 Mpc, respectively. We find that star-forming and quiescent galaxies form two distinct populations, as characterised by their H-alpha equivalent width, EW(Ha). The relative numbers of star-forming and quiescent galaxies varies strongly and continuously with local density. However, the distribution of EW(Ha) amongst the star-forming population is independent of environment. The fraction of star-forming galaxies shows strong sensitivity to the density on large scales, rho5.5, which is likely independent of the trend with local density, rho1.1. We use two differently-selected group catalogues to demonstrate that the correlation with galaxy density is approximately independent of group velocity dispersion, for sigma=200-1000 km/s. Even in the lowest density environments, no more than ~70 per cent of galaxies show significant H-alpha emission. Based on these results, we conclude that the present-day correlation between star formation rate and environment is a result of short-timescale mechanisms that take place preferentially at high redshift, such as starbursts induced by galaxy-galaxy interactions.

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: Wiener Reconstruction of the Cosmic Web

We reconstruct the underlying density field of the 2 degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) for the redshift range 0.035<z<0.200 using the Wiener Filtering method. The Wiener Filter suppresses shot noise and accounts for selection and incompleteness effects. The method relies on prior knowledge of the 2dF power spectrum of fluctuations and the combination of matter density and bias parameters however the results are only slightly affected by changes to these parameters. We present maps of the density field in two different resolutions: 5 Mpc/h and 10 Mpc/h. We identify all major superclusters and voids in the survey. The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: Final Data Release

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) has obtained spectra for 245591 sources, mainly galaxies, brighter than a nominal extinction-corrected magnitude limit of b_J=19.45. Reliable redshifts were measured for 221414 galaxies. The galaxies are selected from the extended APM Galaxy Survey and cover an area of approximately 1500 square degrees in three regions: an NGP strip, an SGP strip and random fields scattered around the SGP strip. This paper describes the 2dFGRS final data release of 30 June 2003 and complements Colless et al. (2001), which described the survey and the initial 100k data release.
