New relations for scattering amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory at loop level

The calculation of scattering amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory at loop level is important for the analysis of background processes at particle colliders as well as our understanding of perturbation theory at the quantum level. We present tools to derive relations for especially one loop amplitudes, as well as several explicit examples for gauge theory coupled to a wide variety of matter. These tools originate in certain scaling behavior of permutation and cyclic sums of Yang-Mills tree amplitudes and loop integrands. In the latter case evidence exists for relations at all loop orders.

Yang-Mills amplitude relations at loop level from non-adjacent BCFW shifts

This article studies methods to obtain relations for scattering amplitudes at the loop level, with concrete examples at one loop. These methods originate in the analysis of large so-called Britto-Cachazo-Feng-Witten shifts of tree level amplitudes and loop level integrands. In particular BCFW shifts for particles which are not color adjacent and some particular generalizations of this situation are analyzed in some detail in four and higher dimensions. For generic non-adjacent shifts our results are independent of loop order for integrands and hold for generic minimally coupled gauge theories with possible scalar potential and Yukawa terms. By a standard argument this result indicates a generalization of the Bern-Carrasco-Johansson relations for tree level amplitudes exists to the integrand at all loop levels. A concrete relation is presented at one loop. Furthermore, inspired by results in QED it is shown that the results on generalized BCFW shifts of tree level amplitudes imply relations for the so-called rational, bubble and triangle terms of one loop amplitudes in pure Yang-Mills theory. Bubble and triangle terms for instance are shown to obey a five photon decoupling identity, while a three photon decoupling identity is demonstrated for the rational terms. Along the same lines recently conjectured relations for helicity equal amplitudes at one loop are shown to generalize to helicity independent relations for the massive box coefficient of the rational terms.

On-shell supersymmetry for massive multiplets

The consequences of on-shell supersymmetry are studied for scattering amplitudes with massive particles in four dimensions. Using the massive version of the spinor helicity formalism the supersymmetry transformations relating products of on-shell states are derived directly from the on-shell supersymmetry algebra for any massive representation. Solutions to the resulting Ward identities can be constructed as functions on the on-shell superspaces that are obtained from the coherent state method. In simple cases it is shown that these superspaces allow one to construct explicitly supersymmetric scattering amplitudes. Supersymmetric on-shell recursion relations for tree-level superamplitudes with massive particles are introduced. As examples, simple supersymmetric amplitudes are constructed in SQCD, the Abelian Higgs model, the Coulomb branch of N=4 super Yang-Mills, QCD with an effective Higgs-gluon coupling and for massive vector boson currents.

On BCFW shifts of integrands and integrals

In this article a first step is made towards the extension of Britto-Cachazo-Feng-Witten (BCFW) tree level on-shell recursion relations to integrands and integrals of scattering amplitudes to arbitrary loop order. Surprisingly, it is shown that the large BCFW shift limit of the integrands has the same structure as the corresponding tree level amplitude in any minimally coupled Yang-Mills theory in four or more dimensions. This implies that these integrands can be reconstructed from a subset of their `single cuts'. The main tool is powercounting Feynman graphs in a special lightcone gauge choice employed earlier at tree level by Arkani-Hamed and Kaplan. The relation between shifts of integrands and shifts of its integrals is investigated explicitly at one loop. Two particular sources of discrepancy between the integral and integrand are identified related to UV and IR divergences. This is cross-checked with known results for helicity equal amplitudes at one loop. The nature of the on-shell residue at each of the single-cut singularities of the integrand is commented upon. Several natural conjectures and opportunities for further research present themselves.

On-shell Recursion in String Theory

We prove that all open string theory disc amplitudes in a flat background obey Britto-Cachazo-Feng-Witten (BCFW) on-shell recursion relations, up to a possible reality condition on a kinematic invariant. Arguments that the same holds for tree level closed string amplitudes are given as well. Non-adjacent BCFW-shifts are related to adjacent shifts through monodromy relations for which we provide a novel CFT based derivation. All possible recursion relations are related by old-fashioned string duality. The field theory limit of the analysis for amplitudes involving gluons is explicitly shown to be smooth for both the bosonic string as well as the superstring. In addition to a proof a less rigorous but more powerful argument based on the underlying CFT is presented which suggests that the technique may extend to a much more general setting in string theory. This is illustrated by a discussion of the open string in a constant B-field background and the closed string on the level of the sphere.

No triangles on the moduli space of maximally supersymmetric gauge theory

Maximally supersymmetric gauge theory in four dimensions has a remarkably simple S-matrix at the origin of its moduli space at both tree and loop level. This leads to the question what, if any, of this structure survives at the complement of this one point. Here this question is studied in detail at one loop for the branch of the moduli space parameterized by a vacuum expectation value for one complex scalar. Motivated by the parallel D-brane picture of spontaneous symmetry breaking a simple relation is demonstrated between the Lagrangian of broken super Yang-Mills theory and that of its higher dimensional unbroken cousin. Using this relation it is proven both through an on- as well as an off-shell method there are no so-called triangle coefficients in the natural basis of one-loop functions at any finite point of the moduli space for the theory under study. The off-shell method yields in addition absence of rational terms in a class of theories on the Coulomb branch which includes the special case of maximal supersymmetry. The results in this article provide direct field theory evidence for a recently proposed exact dual conformal symmetry motivated by the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Covariant representation theory of the Poincaré algebra and some of its extensions

There has been substantial calculational progress in the last few years for gauge theory amplitudes which involve massless four dimensional particles. One of the central ingredients in this has been the ability to keep precise track of the Poincare algebra quantum numbers of the particles involved. Technically, this is most easily done using the well-known four dimensional spinor helicity method. In this article a natural generalization to all dimensions higher than four is obtained based on a covariant version of the representation theory of the Poincare algebra. Covariant expressions for all possible polarization states, both bosonic and fermionic, are constructed. For the fermionic states the analysis leads directly to pure spinors. The natural extension to the representation theory of the on-shell supersymmetry algebra results in an elementary derivation of the supersymmetry Ward identities for scattering amplitudes with massless or massive legs in any integer dimension from four onwards. As a proof-of-concept application a higher dimensional analog of the vanishing helicity-equal amplitudes in four dimensions is presented in (super) Yang-Mills theory, Einstein (super-)gravity and superstring theory in a flat background.
