Salem numbers, spectral radii and growth rates of hyperbolic Coxeter groups

We show that not every Salem number appears as the growth rate of a cocompact hyperbolic Coxeter group. We also give a new proof of the fact that the growth rates of planar hyperbolic Coxeter groups are spectral radii of Coxeter transformations, and show that this need not be the case for growth rates of hyperbolic tetrahedral Coxeter groups.

The non-arithmetic cusped hyperbolic 3-orbifold of minimal volume

We show that the 1-cusped quotient of the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^3$ by the tetrahedral Coxeter group $Γ_*=[5,3,6]$ has minimal volume among all non-arithmetic cusped hyperbolic 3-orbifolds, and as such it is uniquely determined. Furthermore, the lattice $Γ_*$ is incommensurable to any Gromov-Piatetski-Shapiro type lattice. Our methods have their origin in the work of C. Adams. We extend considerably this approach via the geometry of the underlying horoball configuration induced by a cusp.

Hyperbolic Coxeter groups and minimal growth rates in dimensions four and five

For small $n$, the known compact hyperbolic $n$-orbifolds of minimal volume are intimately related to Coxeter groups of smallest rank. For $n=2$ and $3$, these Coxeter groups are given by the triangle group $[7,3]$ and the tetrahedral group $[3,5,3]$, and they are also distinguished by the fact that they have minimal growth rate among all cocompact hyperbolic Coxeter groups in $\hbox{Isom}\mathbb H^n$, respectively. In this work, we consider the cocompact Coxeter simplex group $G_4$ with Coxeter symbol $[5,3,3,3]$ in $\hbox{Isom}\mathbb H^4$ and the cocompact Coxeter prism group $G_5$ based on $[5,3,3,3,3]$ in $\hbox{Isom}\mathbb H^5$. Both groups are arithmetic and related to the fundamental group of the minimal volume arithmetic compact hyperbolic $n$-orbifold for $n=4$ and $5$, respectively. Here, we prove that the group $G_n$ is distinguished by having smallest growth rate among all Coxeter groups acting cocompactly on $\mathbb H^n$ for $n=4$ and $5$, respectively. The proof is based on combinatorial properties of compact hyperbolic Coxeter polyhedra, some partial classification results and certain monotonicity properties of growth rates of the associated Coxeter groups.

The three smallest compact arithmetic hyperbolic 5-orbifolds

We determine the three hyperbolic 5-orbifolds of smallest volume among compact arithmetic orbifolds, and we identify their fundamental groups with hyperbolic Coxeter groups. This gives two different ways to compute the volume of these orbifolds.

On the growth of cocompact hyperbolic Coxeter groups

For an arbitrary cocompact hyperbolic Coxeter group G with finite generator set S and complete growth function P(x)/Q(x), we provide a recursion formula for the coefficients of the denominator polynomial Q(x) which allows to determine recursively the Taylor coefficients and the pole behavior of the growth function of G in terms of its Coxeter subgroup structure. We illustrate this in the easy case of compact right-angled hyperbolic n-polytopes. Finally, we provide detailed insight into the case of Coxeter groups with at most 6 generators, acting cocompactly on hyperbolic 4-space, by considering the three combinatorially different families discovered and classified by Lanner, Kaplinskaya and Esselmann, respectively.
