Geometrical constraints on dark energy models

This contribution intends to give a pedagogical introduction to the topic of dark energy (the mysterious agent supposed to drive the observed late time acceleration of the Universe) and to various observational tests which require only assumptions on the geometry of the Universe. Those tests are the supernovae luminosity, the CMB shift, the direct Hubble data, and the baryon acoustic oscillations test. An historical overview of Cosmology is followed by some generalities on FRW spacetimes (the best large-scale description of the Universe), and then the test themselves are discussed. A convenient section on statistical inference is included as well.

Cosmological constraints combining H(z), CMB shift and SNIa observational data

Recently H(z) data obtained from differential ages of galaxies have been proposed as a new geometrical probe of dark energy. In this paper we use those data, combined with other background tests (CMB shift and SNIa data), to constrain a set of general relativistic dark energy models together with some other models motivated by extra dimensions. Our analysis rests mostly on Bayesian statistics, and we conclude that LCDM is at least substantially favoured, and that braneworld models are less favoured than general relativistic ones.

Chaplygin DGP cosmologies

A new class of braneworld models displaying late-time phantom acceleration without resorting to a phantom fluid is presented. In this scenario expansion is fuelled by dark matter together with some effective dark energy capable of crossing the phantom divide. Unlike a previous proposal of this nature, in these models the effective phantom behaviour remains valid at all redshifts for some choices of the free parameters of the models. The construction is based on the generalised Chaplygin gas, and the cosmological history interpolates between a standard CDM-like behaviour at early times and a de Sitter-like behaviour at late times, so no future singularity is reached.

Quintom cosmologies with arbitrary potentials

In this paper we investigate quintom cosmologies with arbitrary potentials from the dynamical systems perspective. The dynamical systems analysis is complete in the sense that it includes the asymptotic regime where both scalar fields diverge, which proves to be particularly relevant in connection with the existence of tracking phases. The results of the present study indicate that the existence of phantom attractors is not generic: for quintom models there may exist either de Sitter attractors associated with the saddle points of the potential, or tracking attractors in the asymptotic regime where the scalar fields diverge.

Observational constraints on phantom-like braneworld cosmologies

We investigate a simple braneworld model in which the universe contains only cold dark matter and a cosmological constant, but the effective dark energy is phantom-like because of extra-dimensional gravity effects. Modified gravity screens the cosmological constant Lambda, allowing for a larger Lambda. In practice, observations do not favour any significant screening. We use supernova data, the cosmic microwave background shift parameter, and the baryon oscillation peak in the galaxy distribution to constrain the model. We find the mean value of Omega_m with 68% confidence limits, and an upper limit on Omega_Lambda at the 68% confidence level. The best-fit model is very close to a standard LCDM model, but the LCDM model provides a better fit since it has one less parameter.

Crossing the phantom divide without phantom matter

A class of braneworld models can lead to phantom-like acceleration of the late universe, but without the need for any phantom matter. In the simplest models, the universe contains only cold dark matter and a cosmological constant. We generalize these models by introducing a quintessence field. The new feature in our models is that quintessence leads to a crossing of the phantom divide, $w=-1$. This is a purely gravitational effect, and there is no phantom instability. Furthermore, the Hubble parameter is always decreasing, and there is no big rip singularity in the future.

Crossing the phantom barrier with purely kinetic multiple k-essence

We consider multiple k-essence sources and obtain the conditions their kinetic functions must satisfy so that purely kinetic k-essences lead to models with phantom barrier crossing. After that, we show that polynomial kinetic functions allow the integration of the dynamical equations determining the geometry and the k-fields. The models thus obtained have accelerated expansion at late cosmic time, representing universes ending at a finite time with a big rip singularity. In addition, these models begin to evolve from an initial singularity, so they have a finite time span.

Quintom cosmologies admitting either tracking or phantom attractors

In this paper we investigate the evolution of a class of cosmologies fuelled by quintom dark energy and dark matter. Quintom dark energy is a hybrid of quintessence and phantom which involves the participation of two reals scalar fields playing the roles of those two types of dark energy. In that framework we examine from a dynamical systems perspective the possibility that those fields are coupled among them by considering an exponential potential with an interesting functional dependence similar but not identical to others studied before. The model we consider represents a counterexample to the typical behavior of quintom models with exponential potentials because it admits either tracking attractors ($w=0$), or phantom attractors ($w<-1$).

Quintessence as k-essence

Quintessence and k-essence have been proposed as candidates for the dark energy component of the universe that would be responsible of the currently observed accelerated expansion. In this paper we investigate the degree of resemblance between those two theoretical setups, and find that every quintessence model can be viewed as a k-essence model generated by a kinetic linear function. In addition, we show the true effects of k-essence begin at second order in the expansion of the kinetic function in powers of the kinetic energy.

Large-scale inhomogeneities in modified Chaplygin gas cosmologies

We extend the homogeneous modified Chaplygin cosmologies to large-scale perturbations by formulating a Zeldovich-like approximation. We show that the model interpolates between an epoch with a soft equation of state and a de Sitter phase, and that in the intermediate regime its matter content is simply the sum of dust and a cosmological constant. We then study how the large-scale inhomogeneities evolve and compare the results with cold dark matter (CDM), $Λ$CDM and generalized Chaplygin scenarios. Interestingly, we find that unlike the latter, our models do always resemble $Λ$CDM.

Duality extended Chaplygin cosmologies with a big rip

We consider modifications to the Friedmann equation motivated by recent proposals along these lines pursuing an explanation to the observed late time acceleration. Here we show those modifications can be framed within a theory with self-interacting gravity, where the term self-interaction refers here to the presence of functions of $ρ$ and $p$ in the right hand side of the Einstein equations. We then discuss the construction of the duals of the cosmologies generated within that framework. After that we investigate the modifications required to generate generalized and modified Chaplygin cosmologies and show that their duals belong to a larger family of cosmologies we call extended Chaplygin cosmologies. Finally, by letting the parameters of those models take values not earlier considered in the literature we show some representatives of that family of cosmologies display sudden future singularities, which indicates their behavior is rather different from generalized or modified Chaplygin gas cosmologies. This reinforces the idea that modifications of gravity can be responsible for unexpected evolutionary features in the universe.

Asymptotic behavior of Cardassian cosmologies with exponential potentials

In this paper we analyze the asymptotic behavior of Cardassian cosmological models filled with a perfect fluid and a scalar field with an exponential potential. Cardassian cosmologies arise from modifications of the Friedmann equation, and among the different proposals within that framework we will choose those of the form $3H^2-ρ\propto ρ^n$ with $n<1$. We construct two three dimensional dynamical systems arising from the evolution equations, respectively adapted for studying the high and low energy limits. Using standard dynamical systems techniques we find the fixed points and characterize the solutions they represent. We pay especial attention to the properties inherent to the modifications and compare with the (standard) unmodified scenario. Among other interesting results, we find there are no late-time tracking attractors.

Geodesic behavior of sudden future singularities

In this paper we analyze the effect of recently proposed classes of sudden future singularities on causal geodesics of FLRW spacetimes. Geodesics are shown to be extendible and just the equations for geodesic deviation are singular, although tidal forces are not strong enough to produce a Big Rip. For the sake of completeness, we compare with the typical sudden future singularities of phantom cosmologies.

Atypical k-essence cosmologies

We analyze the implications of having a divergent speed of sound in k-essence cosmological models. We first study a known theory of that kind, for which the Lagrangian density depends linearly on the time derivative of the k-field. We show that when k-essence is the only source consistency requires that the potential of the k-field be of the inverse square form. Then, we review the known result that the corresponding power-law solutions can be mapped to power-law solutions of theories with no divergence in the speed of sound. After that, we argue that the requirement of a divergent sound speed at some point fixes uniquely the form of the Lagrangian to be exactly the one considered earlier and prove the asymptotic stability of the most interesting solutions belonging to the divergent theory. Then, we discuss the implications having not just k-essence but also matter. This is interesting because introducing another component breaks the rigidity of the theory, and the form of the potential ceases to be unique as happened in the pure k-essence case. Finally, we show the finiteness of the effective sound speed under an appropiate definition.

Symmetries and assisted inflation in the DGP braneworld model

We present here the general transformation that leaves unchanged the form of the field equations for perfect fluid cosmologies in the DGP braneworld model. Specifically, a prescription for relating exact solutions with different equations of state is provided, and the symmetries found can be used as algorithms for generating new cosmological models from previously known ones. We also present, implicitly, the first known exact DGP perfect fluid spacetime. A particular case of the general transformation is used to illustrate the crucial role played both by the number of scalar fields and the extra dimensional effects in the occurrence of inflation. In particular, we see that assisted inflation does not proceed at all times for one of the two possible ways in which the brane can be embedded into the bulk.

Rigidity of cosmic acceleration in a class of k-essence cosmologies

We study the structural stability of a cosmic acceleration (inflation) in a class of k-essence cosmologies against changes in the shape of the potential. Those models may be viewed as generalized tachyon cosmologies and this analysis extends previous results on the structural stability of cosmic acceleration in tachyon cosmologies. The study considers both phantom and non-phantom cases. The concepts of rigidity and fragility are defined through a condition on the functional form of the Hubble factor. Given the known result of the existence of inflationary (non-phantom) and super-inflationary (phantom) attractors we formulate the question of their structural stability. We find that those attractors are rigid in the sense that they never change as long as the conditions for inflation or super-inflation are met.

Dark matter to dark energy transition in k-essence cosmologies

We implement the transition from dark matter to dark energy in k-essence cosmologies for a very large set of kinetic functions $F$, in a way alternative to recent proposals which use generalized Chaplygin gas and transient models. Here we require that the pressure admits a power-law expansion around some value of the kinetic energy where the pressure vanishes. In addition, for suitable values of the parameters of the model, the speed of sound of the dark matter will be low. We first present the discussion in fairly general terms, and later consider for illustration two examples.

Unified phantom cosmologies

We present a general algorithm based on the concept of form-invariance which can be used for generating phantom cosmologies. It involves linear transformations between the kinetic energy and the potential of the scalar field, and transforms solutions of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon equations which preserve the weak energy condition into others which violate it, while keeping the energy density of the field positive. All known solutions representing phantom cosmologies are unified by this procedure. Using the general algorithm we obtain those solutions and show the relations between them. In addition, the scale factors of the product and seed solutions are related by a generalization of the well-known $a\to a^{-1}$ duality.
