Approximation property of $C^*$-algebraic Bundles

In this paper, we will define the reduced cross-sectional $C^*$-algebras of $C^*$-algebraic bundles over locally compact groups and show that if a $C^*$-algebraic bundle has the approximation property (defined similarly as in the discrete case), then the full cross-sectional $C^*$-algebra and the reduced one coincide. Moreover, if a semi-direct product bundle has the approximation property and the underlying $C^*$-algebra is nuclear, then the cross-sectional $C^*$-algebra is also nuclear. We will also compare the approximation property with the amenability of Anantharaman-Delaroche in the case of discrete groups.

Morita-Rieffel Equivalence and Spectral Theory for Integrable Automorphism Groups of C*-Algebras

Given a C*-dynamical system (A,G,α), we discuss conditions under which subalgebras of the multiplier algebra M(A) consisting of fixed points for αare Morita-Rieffel equivalent to ideals in the crossed product of A by G. In case G is abelian we also develop a spectral theory, giving a necessary and sufficient condition for αto be equivalent to the dual action on the cross-sectional C*-algebra of a Fell bundle. In our main application we show that a proper action of an abelian group on a locally compact space is equivalent to a dual action.

A Note on the Representation Theory of Fell Bundles

We show that every Fell bundle B over a locally compact group G is "proper" in a sense recently introduced by Ng. Combining our results with those of Ng we show that if B satisfies the "approximation property" then it is amenable in the sense that the full and reduced cross-sectional C*-algebras coincide.

Finite dimensional representations of the soft torus

The soft tori constitute a continuous deformation, in a very precise sense, from the commutative C*-algebra C(T^2) to the highly non-commutative C*-algebra C*(F_2). Since both of these C*-algebras are known to have a separating family of finite dimensional representations, it is natural to ask whether that is also the case for the soft tori. We show that this is in fact the case.

Cuntz-Krieger algebras for infinite matrices

Given an arbitrary infinite 0--1 matrix A having no identically zero rows, we define an algebra OA as the universal C*-algebra generated by partial isometries subject to conditions that generalize, to the infinite case, those introduced by Cuntz and Krieger for finite matrices. We realize OA as the crossed product algebra for a partial dynamical system and, based on this description, we extend to the infinite case some of the main results known to hold in the finite case, namely the uniqueness theorem, the classification of ideals, and the simplicity criteria. OA is always nuclear and we obtain conditions for it to be unital and purely infinite.

Partial dynamical systems and C*-algebras generated by partial isometries

A collection of partial isometries whose range and initial projections satisfy a specified set of conditions often gives rise to a partial representation of a group. The C*-algebra generated by the partial isometries is thus a quotient of the universal C*-algebra for partial representations of the group, from which it inherits a crossed product structure, of an abelian C*-algebra by a partial action of the group. Questions of faithfulness of representations, simplicity, and ideal structure of these C*-algebras can then be addressed in a unified manner from within the theory of partial actions. We do this here, focusing on two key properties of partial dynamical systems, namely amenability and topological freeness; they are the essential ingredients of our main results in which we characterize faithful representations, simplicity and the ideal structure of crossed products. As applications we consider three situations involving C*-algebras generated by partial isometries: partial representations of groups, Toeplitz algebras of quasi-lattice ordered groups, and Cuntz-Krieger algebras. These C*-algebras share a crossed product structure which we give here explicitly and which we use to study them in terms of the underlying partial actions.

Deformation Quantization via Fell Bundles

A method for deforming C*-algebras is introduced, which applies to C*-algebras that can be described as the cross-sectional C*-algebra of a Fell bundle. Several well known examples of non-commutative algebras, usually obtained by deforming commutative ones by various methods, are shown to fit our unified perspective of deformation via Fell bundles. Examples are the non-commutative spheres of Matsumoto, the non-commutative lens spaces of Matsumoto and Tomiyama, and the quantum Heisenberg manifolds of Rieffel. In a special case, in which the deformation arises as a result of an action of R^{2d}, assumed to be periodic in the first d variables, we show that we get a strict deformation quantization.

Partial Representations and Amenable Fell Bundles over Free Groups

We show that a Fell bundle B = {B_t}_{t \in F}, over an arbitrary free group F, is amenable, whenever it is orthogonal (in the sense that B_x^* B_y = 0, if x and y are distinct generators of F) and semi-saturated (in the sense that B_{ts} coincides with the closed linear span of B_t B_s, when the multiplication ``ts'' involves no cancelation).

Amenability for Fell Bundles

Given a Fell bundle $\B$, over a discrete group $Γ$, we construct its reduced cross sectional algebra $C^*_r(\B)$, in analogy with the reduced crossed products defined for C*-dynamical systems. When the reduced and full cross sectional algebras of $\B$ are isomorphic, we say that the bundle is amenable. We then formulate an approximation property which we prove to be a sufficient condition for amenability. A theory of $Γ$-graded C*-algebras possessing a conditional expectation is developed, with an eye on the Fell bundle that one naturally associates to the grading. We show, for instance, that all such algebras are isomorphic to $C^*_r(\B)$, when the bundle is amenable. We also study induced ideals in graded C*-algebras and obtain a generalization of results of Stratila and Voiculescu on AF-algebras, and of Nica on quasi-lattice ordered groups. A brief comment is made on the relevance, to our theory, of a certain open problem in the theory of exact C*-algebras. An application is given to the case of an $F_n$-grading of the Cuntz-Krieger algebras $O_A$, recently discovered by Quigg and Raeburn. Specifically, we show that the Cuntz-Krieger bundle satisfies the approximation property, and hence is amenable, for all matrices $A$ with entries in {0,1}, even if $A$ does not satisfy the well known property (I) studied by Cuntz and Krieger in their paper.

Partial actions of groups and actions of inverse semigroups

Given a group G, we construct, in a canonical way, an inverse semigroup S(G) associated to G. The actions of S(G) are shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with the partial actions of G, both in the case of actions on a set, and that of actions as operators on a Hilbert space. In other words, G and S(G) have the same representation theory. We show that S(G) governs the subsemigroup of all closed linear subspaces of a G-graded C*-algebra, generated by the grading subspaces. In the special case of finite groups, the maximum number of such subspaces is computed. A ``partial'' version of the group C*-algebra of a discrete group is introduced. While the usual group C*-algebra of finite commutative groups forgets everything but the order of the group, we show that the partial group C*-algebra of the two commutative groups of order four, namely Z/4 and Z/2+Z/2, are not isomorphic.

Continuous Fell Bundles Associated to Measurable Twisted Actions

Given a measurable twisted action of a second-countable, locally compact group G on a separable C*-algebra A, we prove the existence of a topology on AxG making it a continuous bundle, whose cross sectional C*-algebra is isomorphic to the Busby--Smith--Packer--Raeburn crossed product.

Unconditional Integrability for Dual Actions

The dual action of a locally compact abelian group, in the context of C*-algebraic bundles, is shown to satisfy an integrability property, similar to Rieffel's proper actions. The tools developed include a generalization of Bochner's integral as well as a Fourier inversion formula for operator valued maps.

Twisted Partial Actions, A Classification of Stable C*-Algebraic Bundles (Preliminary Version)

We introduce the notion of continuous twisted partial actions of a locally compact group on a C*-algebra. With such, we construct an associated C*-algebraic bundle called the semidirect product bundle. Our main theorem shows that, given any C*-algebraic bundle which is second countable and whose unit fiber algebra is stable, there is a continuous twisted partial action of the base group on the unit fiber algebra, whose associated semidirect product bundle is isomorphic to the given one.

The Bunce-Deddens Algebras as Crossed Products by Partial Automorphisms

We describe both the Bunce-Deddens C*-algebras and their Toeplitz versions, as crossed products of commutative C*-algebras by partial automorphisms. In the latter case, the commutative algebra has, as its spectrum, the union of the Cantor set and a copy the set of natural numbers N, fitted together in such a way that N is an open dense subset. The partial automorphism is induced by a map that acts like the odometer map on the Cantor set while being the translation by one on N. From this we deduce, by taking quotients, that the Bunce-Deddens C*-algebras are isomorphic to the (classical) crossed product of the algebra of continuous functions on the Cantor set by the odometer map.

A Fredholm Operator Approach To Morita Equivalence

Given C*-algebras A and B and an imprimitivity A-B-bimodule X, we construct an explicit isomorphism X_* : K_i(A) --> K_i(B) where K_i denote the complex K-theory functors for i=0, 1. Our techniques do not require separability nor existence of countable approximate identities. We thus extend, to general C*-algebras, the result of Brown, Green and Rieffel according to which strongly Morita equivalent C*-algebras have isomorphic K-groups. The method employed includes a study of Fredholm operators on Hilbert modules.

The Soft Torus II: A Variational Analysis of Commutator Norms

The field of C*-algebras over the interval [0,2] for which the fibers are the Soft Tori is shown to be continuous. This result is applied to show that any pair of non-commuting unitary operators can be perturbed (in a weak sense) in such a way to decrease the commutator norm. Perturbations in norm are also considered and a characterization is given for pairs of unitary operators which are local minimum points for the commutator norm in the finite dimensional case.
