Survival of the metallic state in a single-hole multiband $p$-orbital molecular system

Strong correlations and ferromagnetic Hund's coupling lead to diverse electronic phenomena in transition-metal oxides that sensitively depend on the $d$-orbital electron filling. Fullerides, their $p$-electron counterparts, exhibit effective antiferromagnetic Hund's coupling in a different energy range. At half-filling ($n=3$, three electrons in triply degenerate orbitals), both $d-$ and $p$-electron systems are Mott insulators due to strong correlations and Hund's coupling. Away from half-filling, in single-electron/hole ($n=1,5$) $d$-orbital systems, Hund's coupling opposes the correlations, reducing the Mott gap and allowing survival of metallicity. Here we report a single-hole multiorbital correlated $p$-electron system, orthorhombic-structured Yb$_2$CsC$_{60}$ comprising pentavalent C$_{60}^{5-}$ anions, which also exhibits a robust metallic state with no Mott transition, just like in the metastable single-electron cubic-structured CsC$_{60}$. We assert that particle-hole symmetry holds well in ($n=1,5$) fullerides and that their $p$-electron-derived states are analogous to those in $d$-orbital solids, providing impetus for further study of these correlated systems.

Bulk synthesis of Zn$_3$WN$_4$ via solid-state metathesis

Ternary nitrides are of growing technological importance, with applications as semiconductors, catalysts, and magnetic materials; however, new synthetic tools are needed to advance materials discovery efforts. Here, we show that Zn$_3$WN$_4$ can be synthesized via metathesis reactions between Li$_6$WN$_4$ and Zn$X_2$ ($X$ = Br, Cl, F). In situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry show that the reaction onset is correlated with the Zn$X_2$ melting point and that product purity is inversely correlated with the reaction's exothermicity. High resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction measurements show that this bulk synthesis produces a structure with substantial cation ordering, as opposed to the disordered structure initially discovered via thin film sputtering. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy reveals that Zn$_3$WN$_4$ powders exhibit two optical absorption onsets at 2.5 eV and 4.0 eV, indicating wide-bandgap semiconducting behavior and suggesting a small amount of structural disorder. We hypothesize that this synthesis strategy is generalizable because many potential Li-$M$-N precursors (where $M$ is a metal) are available for synthesizing new ternary nitride materials. This work introduces a promising synthesis strategy that will accelerate the discovery of novel functional ternary nitrides and other currently inaccessible materials.

Pressure induced collapse of magnetic order in jarosite

We report a pressure-induced phase transition in the frustrated kagomé material jarosite at ~45 GPa, which leads to the disappearance of magnetic order. Using a suite of experimental techniques, we characterize the structural, electronic, and magnetic changes in jarosite through this phase transition. Synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy experiments, analyzed in aggregate with the results from density functional theory calculations, indicate that the material changes from a R-3m structure to a structure with a R-3c space group. The resulting phase features a rare twisted kagomé lattice in which the integrity of the equilateral Fe3+ triangles persists. Based on symmetry arguments we hypothesize that the resulting structural changes alter the magnetic interactions to favor a possible quantum paramagnetic phase at high pressure.

Chemical Bonding Governs Complex Magnetism in MnPt5P

Subtle changes in chemical bonds may result in dramatic revolutions in magnetic properties in solid state materials. MnPt5P, a new derivative of the rare-earth-free ferromagnetic MnPt5As, was discovered and is presented in this work. MnPt5P was synthesized and its crystal structure and chemical composition were characterized by X-ray diffraction as well as energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Accordingly, MnPt5P crystallizes in the layered tetragonal structure with the space group P4/mmm (No. 123), in which the face-shared Mn@Pt12 polyhedral layers are separated by P layers. In contrast to the ferromagnetism observed in MnPt5As, the magnetic properties measurements on MnPt5P show antiferromagnetic ordering occurs at ~188 K with a strong magnetic anisotropy in and out of the ab-plane. Moreover, a spin-flop transition appears when a high magnetic field is applied. An A-type antiferromagnetic structure was obtained from the analysis of powder neutron diffraction (PND) patterns collected at 150 K and 9 K. Calculated electronic structures imply that hybridization of Mn-3d and Pt-5d orbitals are critical for both the structural stability and observed magnetic properties. Semi-empirical molecular orbitals calculations on both MnPt5P and MnPt5As indicate that the lack of 4p character on the P atoms at the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) in MnPt5P may cause the different magnetic behavior in MnPt5P compared to MnPt5As. The discovery of MnPt5P, along with our previously reported MnPt5As, parametrizes the end points of a tunable system to study the chemical bonding which tunes the magnetic ordering from ferromagnetism to antiferromagnetism with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect.
