Complex Antiferromagnetic Order in the Metallic Triangular Lattice Compound SmAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$

The compounds $Ln$AuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ ($Ln$ $=$ lanthanide) form in a structure that features two-dimensional triangular lattices of $Ln$ ions that are stacked along the crystalline $c$ axis. Together with crystal electric field effects, magnetic anisotropy, and electron-mediated spin exchange interactions, this sets the stage for the emergence of strongly correlated spin and electron phenomena. Here we investigate SmAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$, which exhibits weak paramagnetism that strongly deviates from conventional Curie-Weiss behavior. Complex antiferromagnetic ordering emerges at $T_{\rm{N1}}$ $=$ 13.2 K and $T_{\rm{N2}}$ $=$ 7.4 K, where heat capacity measurements show that these transitions are first and second order, respectively. These measurements also reveal that the Sommerfeld coefficient is not enhanced compared to the nonmagnetic analog YAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$, consistent with the charge carrier quasiparticles exhibiting typical Fermi liquid behavior. The temperature-dependent electrical resistivity follows standard metallic behavior, but linear magnetoresistance unexpectedly appears within the ordered state. We compare these results to other $Ln$AuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ materials, which have already been established as localized $f$-electron magnets that are hosts for interesting magnetic and electronic phases. From this, SmAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ emerges as a complex quantum spin metal, inviting further investigations into its properties and the broader family of related materials.

Charge Density Wave Order in Superconducting Topological Insulator Nbx-Bi2Se3

Spontaneously broken symmetry in the ground state of Bi-based topological materials can lead to promising Topological superconductors, such as Cu-Bi2Se3, Sr-Bi2Se3 and Nb-Bi2Se3. In recent studies, coexistence of multiple Fermi surface features and superconductivity was found in Nb-Bi2Se3. However, the resultant mutliple Fermi surface--charge density wave has not been experimentally reported yet. In this paper, we report possible evidence of co-occurence of a charge density wave (CDW) ground state and a superconducting (SC) ground state in Nb intercalated Bi2Se3. An intercalation induced Periodic Lattice Distortion appears to help stabilize the CDW state, possibly assisting in the formation of 1D chains and rendering electronic and phonon anisotropy to this intriguing system.

Mn(Pt$_{1-x}$Pd$_{x}$)$_5$P: Isovalent Tuning of Mn Sublattice Magnetic Order

We report the growth and characterization of MnPd$_5$P, a ferromagnet with T$_C$ $\approx$ 295 K, and conduct a substitutional study with its antiferromagnetic analogue MnPt$_5$P. We grow single crystals of MnPd$_5$P and Mn(Pt$_{1-x}$Pd$_x$)$_5$P by adding Mn into (Pt$_{1-x}$Pd$_{x}$)-P based melts. All compounds in the family adopt the layered anti-CeCoIn$_5$ structure with space group P4/mmm, and EDS and XRD results indicate that MnPt$_5$P and MnPd$_5$P form a solid solution. Based on magnetization and resistance data, we construct a T-x phase diagram for Mn(Pt$_{1-x}$Pd$_x$)$_5$P and demonstrate the antiferromagnetic order found in MnPt$_5$P is extraordinarily sensitive to Pd substitution. At low Pd fractions (x $<$ 0.010), the single antiferromagnetic transition in pure MnPt$_5$P splits into a higher temperature ferromagnetic transition followed on cooling by a lower temperature ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition and then by a re-entrant antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition at lower temperatures. The antiferromagnetic region makes up a bubble that persists to x $\approx$ 0.009 for T $\approx$ 150 K, with all samples x $<$ 0.009 recovering their initial ferromagnetic state with further cooling to base temperature. Over the same low x range we find a non-monotonic change in the room temperature unit cell volume, further suggesting that pure MnPt$_5$P is close to an instability. Once x $>$ 0.010, Mn(Pt$_{1-x}$Pd$_x$)$_5$P undergoes a single ferromagnetic transition. The Curie temperature increases rapidly with x, rising from T$_C$ $\approx$ 197 K at x = 0.013 to a maximum of T$_C$ $\approx$ 312 K for x $\approx$ 0.62, and then falls back to T$_C$ $\approx$ 295 K for pure MnPd$_5$P (x = 1). Given that Pt and Pd are isoelectronic, this work raises questions as to the origin of the extreme sensitivity of the magnetic ground state in MnPt$_5$P upon introducing Pd.

Field-Induced Magnetic States in the Metallic Rare-Earth Layered Triangular Antiferromagnet TbAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$

Magnetic frustration in metallic rare earth lanthanides ($Ln$) with $4f$-electrons is crucial for producing interesting magnetic phases with high magnetic anisotropy where intertwined charge and spin degrees of freedom lead to novel phenomena. Here we report on the magnetic, thermodynamic, and electrical transport properties of TbAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$. Tb ions form 2-dimensional triangular lattice layers which stack along the crystalline $c$-axis. The magnetic phase diagram reveals multiple nearly degenerate ordered states upon applying field along the magnetically easy $ab$-plane before saturation. The magnetoresistance in this configuration exhibits intricate field dependence that closely follows that of the magnetization while the specific heat reveals a region of highly enhanced entropy, suggesting the possibility of a non-trivial spin textured phase. For fields applied along the $c$-axis (hard axis), we find linear magnetoresistance over a wide range of fields. We compare the magnetic properties and magnetoresistance with an isostructral GdAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ single crystals. These results identify TbAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ as an environment for complex quantum spin states and pave the way for further investigations of the broader $Ln$AuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ family of materials.

Magnetic Ordering in GdAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ and TbAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$: layered compounds with triangular lanthanide nets

We report the synthesis of the entire $Ln$AuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ ($Ln$ = Y, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and Tm) series and focus on the magnetic properties of GdAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ and TbAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$. Temperature and magnetic field dependent magnetization, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity measurements reveal that both compounds exhibit several magnetically ordered states at low temperatures, with evidence for magnetic fluctuations extending into the paramagnetic temperature region. For magnetic fields applied in the $ab$-plane there are several ordered state regions that are associated with metamagnetic phase transitions, consistent with there being multiple nearly degenerate ground states. Despite Gd being an isotropic $S$-state ion and Tb having an anisotropic $J$-state, there are similarities in the phase diagrams for the two compounds, suggesting that factors such as the symmetry of the crystalline lattice, which features well separated triangular planes of lanthanide ions, or the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction as defined by the Fermi surface topography control the magnetism. We also point out similarities to other centrosymmetric compounds that host skyrmion lattices such as Gd$_2$PdSi$_3$, and propose that the $Ln$AuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ family of compounds are of interest as reservoirs for complex magnetism and electronic behaviors such as the topological Hall effect.

Theory-guided investigation on magnetic evolution of MnPt$_{5-x}$Pd$_x$P and discovery of anti-CeCoIn$_5$-type ferromagnetic MnPd$_5$P

We report the magnetic changes from canted antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic orderings in anti-115-type MnPt$_{5-x}$Pd$_x$P ($x$ = 1, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, and 5) and the discovery of a new rare-earth-free ferromagnet, MnPd$_5$P by both theoretical prediction and experimental investigation. The family compounds were synthesized using high temperature solid state method and characterized to crystalize in the anti-CeCoIn$_5$ type with the space group P4/mmm exhibiting a two-dimensional layered structural feature. The magnetic property measurements indicate that the compounds ordered from canted A-type antiferromagnet in MnPt$_5$P to ferromagnet above the room temperature with varying degrees of coercivity and magnetic moments in MnPd$_5$P by reducing the spin orbital coupling. The results of the MnPt$_{5-x}$Pd$_x$P have been analyzed in comparison to the other candidates of the 151 family of Mn(Pt/Pd)$_5$(P/As) to understand the complex structure-magnetism relationships.

One-Component Order Parameter in URu$_2$Si$_2$ Uncovered by Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy and Machine Learning

The unusual correlated state that emerges in URu$_2$Si$_2$ below T$_{HO}$ = 17.5 K is known as "hidden order" because even basic characteristics of the order parameter, such as its dimensionality (whether it has one component or two), are "hidden". We use resonant ultrasound spectroscopy to measure the symmetry-resolved elastic anomalies across T$_{HO}$. We observe no anomalies in the shear elastic moduli, providing strong thermodynamic evidence for a one-component order parameter. We develop a machine learning framework that reaches this conclusion directly from the raw data, even in a crystal that is too small for traditional resonant ultrasound. Our result rules out a broad class of theories of hidden order based on two-component order parameters, and constrains the nature of the fluctuations from which unconventional superconductivity emerges at lower temperature. Our machine learning framework is a powerful new tool for classifying the ubiquitous competing orders in correlated electron systems.

Magnetic Properties of New Triangular Lattice Magnets A${_4}$B'B${_2}$O$_{12}$

The geometrically frustrated two dimensional triangular lattice magnets A${_4}$B'B${_2}$O$_{12}$ (A = Ba, Sr, La; B' = Co, Ni, Mn; B = W, Re) have been studied by x-ray diffraction, AC and DC susceptibilities, powder neutron diffraction, and specific heat measurements. The results reveal that (i) the samples containing Co$^{2+}$ (effective spin-1/2) and Ni$^{2+}$ (spin-1) ions with small spin numbers exhibit ferromagnetic (FM) ordering while the sample containing Mn$^{2+}$ (spin-5/2) ions with a large spin number exhibits antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering. We ascribe these spin number manipulated ground states to the competition between the AFM B'-O-O-B' and FM B'-O-B-O-B' superexchange interactions; (ii) the chemical pressure introduced into the Co containing samples through the replacement of different size ions on the A site finely tunes the FM ordering temperature of the system. We attribute this effect to the modification of the FM interaction strength induced by the change of the O-B-O angle through chemical pressure.

Removing the spin ice cap: magnetic ground states of rare earth tripod kagome lattice Mg$_2$RE$_3$Sb$_3$O$_{14}$ (RE = Gd, Dy, Er)

We present the structural and magnetic properties of a new compound family, Mg$_2$RE$_3$Sb$_3$O$_{14}$ (RE = Gd, Dy, Er), with a hitherto unstudied frustrating lattice, the "tripod kagome" structure. Susceptibility (ac, dc) and specific heat exhibit features that are understood within a simple Luttinger-Tisza type theory. For RE = Gd, we found long ranged order (LRO) at 1.65 K, which is consistent with a 120 $^{\circ}$ structure, demonstrating the importance of diople interactions for this 2D Heisenberg system. For RE = Dy, LRO at 0.37 K is related to the "kagome spin ice (KSI)" physics for a 2D system. This result shows that the tripod kagome structure accelerates the transition to LRO predicted for the related pyrochlore systems. For RE = Er, two transitions, at 80 mK and 2.1 K are observed, suggesting the importance of quantum fluctuations for this putative XY system.
