Direct Evidence of a Near-Ideal Jeff = 1/2 Ground State in Triangular-Lattice Na2BaCo(PO4)2

We investigated the local Co 3d electronic structure of Na2BaCo(PO4)2 using polarization-dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in combination with full multiplet cluster calculations. We employed the line-fitting inverse partial fluorescence yield (IPFY) technique to obtain accurate XAS spectra from strong insulating materials. Our combined experimental and theoretical analysis reveals a very small effective trigonal distortion of only 11 meV in the CoO6 octahedra, indicating a close to ideal condition to render a ground state with the Jeff = 1/2 character. With our cluster model we were also able to simulate magnetic susceptibility measurements along different directions in the crystal. These findings highlight Na2BaCo(PO4)2 as a promising platform for exploring exotic magnetic phenomena associated with Jeff = 1/2 ground states on triangular lattices.

Field-induced magnetic phases in the Kitaev candidate Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$

We report a rich anisotropic magnetic phase diagram of Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$, a previously proposed cobaltate Kitaev candidate, based on field- and temperature-dependent magnetization, specific heat, and magnetocaloric effect studies. At low temperatures, our experiments uncover a low-lying $j_{\textrm{eff}} = \frac{1}{2}$ state with an antiferromagnetic ground state and pronounced in-plane versus out-of-plane anisotropy. The experimentally identified magnetic phases are theoretically characterized through classical Monte Carlo simulations within an extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model with additional ring exchange interactions. The resulting phase diagram reveals a variety of exotic field-induced magnetic phases, including double-$\textbf{q}$, $\frac{1}{3}$-AFM, zigzag, and vortex phases.

Unusual Valence of Ru and Prediction of Magnetism, Anomalous Hall Conductivity in a Newly Synthesized Double Perovskite Compound Ca_2CoRuO_6

With a goal to expand on the family of double perovskite compounds, hosting 3d transition metal and 4d or 5d transition metal, two new ordered double perovskite compounds, Ca$_2$FeRuO$_6$ and Ca$_2$CoRuO$_6$ are synthesized following the prediction of a recent high throughput machine-learning study [Phys. Rev. Materials 3, 084418]. Experimentally both compounds are found to stabilize in monoclinic symmetry, which is consistent with the high-throughput prediction for Ca$_2$FeRuO$_6$, but at odd for Ca$_2$CoRuO$_6$. Among the two synthesized compounds, the properties of Ca$_2$CoRuO$_6$, investigated employing the first principles technique and model Hamiltonian calculation, appear promising. The monoclinic structured Ca$_2$CoRuO$_6$ is found to stabilize unusual 6+ valence of Ru, and support a half-metallic ground state with uncompensated net moment. As predicted by our first-principles study, the finite spin-orbit coupling at the Ru site contributes to the non-trivial topology of the band structure of monoclinic Ca$_2$CoRuO$_6$, resulting in a moderately large value of anomalous Hall conductivity. Our theoretical predictions should encourage further experimental investigation of this newly synthesized compound.

Spin-orbit coupling control of anisotropy, ground state and frustration in 5d2 Sr2MgOsO6

The influence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the physical properties of the 5d2 system Sr2MgOsO6 is probed via a combination of magnetometry, specific heat measurements, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering, and density functional theory calculations. Although a significant degree of frustration is expected, we find that Sr2MgOsO6 orders in a type I antiferromagnetic structure at the remarkably high temperature of 108 K. The measurements presented allow for the first accurate quantification of the size of the magnetic moment in a 5d2 system of 0.60(2) muB - a significantly reduced moment from the expected value for such a system. Furthermore, significant anisotropy is identified via a spin excitation gap, and we confirm by first principles calculations that SOC not only provides the magnetocrystalline anisotropy, but also plays a crucial role in determining both the ground state magnetic order and the size of the local moment in this compound. Through comparison to Sr2ScOsO6, it is demonstrated that SOC-induced anisotropy has the ability to relieve frustration in 5d2 systems relative to their 5d3 counterparts, providing an explanation of the high TN found in Sr2MgOsO6.

Effects of chemical pressure on the magnetic ground states of the osmate double perovskites SrCaCoOsO6 and Ca2CoOsO6

The magnetic ground state in the double perovskite system Sr2-xCaxCoOsO6 changes from an antiferromagnet (x = 0), to a spin glass (x = 1), to a ferrimagnet (x = 2) as the Ca content increases. This crossover is driven by chemical pressure effects that control the relative strength of magnetic exchange interactions. The synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetism of SrCaCoOsO6 and Ca2CoOsO6 are investigated and compared with Sr2CoOsO6. Both compounds adopt a monoclinic crystal structure with rock salt ordering of Co2+ and Os6+ and a-a-b+ octahedral tilting, but the average Co-O-Os bond angle evolves from 158.0(3) degrees in SrCaCoOsO6 to 150.54(9) degrees in Ca2CoOsO6 as the smaller Ca2+ ion replaces Sr2+. While this change may seem minor it has a profound effect on the magnetism, changing the magnetic ground state from antiferromagnetic in Sr2CoOsO6 (TN1 = 108 K, TN2 = 70 K), to a spin glass in SrCaCoOsO6 (Tf1 = 32 K, Tf2 = 13 K), to ferrimagnetic in Ca2CoOsO6 (TC = 145 K). In the first two compounds the observation of two transitions is consistent with weak coupling between the Co and Os sublattices.

Effect of Chemical Pressure on High Temperature Ferrimagnetic Double Perovskites Sr2CrOsO6 and Ca2CrOsO6

The ordered double perovskites Sr2CrOsO6 and Ca2CrOsO6 have been synthesized and characterized with neutron powder diffraction, electrical transport measurements, and high field magnetization experiments. Sr2CrOsO6 and Ca2CrOsO6 crystallize with R-3 and P21/n space group symmetry, respectively. Both materials are found to be ferrimagnetic insulators with saturation magnetizations near 0.2 μB. Sr2CrOsO6 orders at 660 K, showing non-monotonic magnetization temperature dependence, while Ca2CrOsO6 orders at 490 K and does not show non-monotonic behavior. Evidence for a theoretically predicted canted magnetic structure in Sr2CrOsO6 is sought and not found.

Magnetic Structure of the Quasi-One-Dimensional La3OsO7 as Determined by Neutron Powder Diffraction

Insulating 5d3 La3OsO7 and hole doped La2.8Ca0.2OsO7 materials featuring well separated pseudo-one-dimensional zig-zag chains of corner-sharing OsO6 octahedra have been synthesized and their magnetic and electrical transport properties characterized. Long range magnetic order between the antiferromagnetic chains is determined with a propagation vector k = 1/2, 1/2, 0 and TN = 45 and 53 K for the parent and doped materials. An Os5+ moment of 1.7(1) μB for La3OsO7 and 1.2(2) μB for La2.8Ca0.2OsO7 is refined. The long range magnetic structure is compared to the few currently known for isostructural Ln3MO7 compounds.
