Completing density functional theory by machine-learning hidden messages from molecules

Kohn-Sham density functional theory is the base of modern computational approaches to electronic structures. Their accuracy vitally relies on the exchange-correlation energy functional, which encapsulates electron-electron interaction beyond the classical one. The functional provides a way to obtain the density and energy without solving the many-body equation and can, in principle, be determined to reproduce the exact ones universally. However, the past approaches are dependent on the theoretical development, which limits the possibility of the functional to human's intuition. Here, we demonstrate a systematic way to machine-learn a functional from a database, without complicated assumptions. The density and energy are related with a flexible feed-forward neural network, which is trained to reproduce accurate dataset, and the KS-DFT is solved by taking the functional derivatives with the back-propagation technique. Surprisingly, a trial functional, trained for just a few molecules, has been shown to be applicable to hundreds of molecular systems with comparable accuracy to the standard functionals. Also, by adding the nodes connected to the hidden layers, a non-local term is straightforwardly included to improve accuracy, which has been hitherto impractically difficult. Utilizing the strategy of rapidly advancing machine learning techniques, this novel approach is expected to enrich the DFT framework by constructing a functional just from a database for materials conventionally difficult to calculate accurately.

Symmetry and geometry in generalized Higgs effective field theory -- Finiteness of oblique corrections v.s. perturbative unitarity

We formulate a generalization of Higgs effective field theory (HEFT) including arbitrary number of extra neutral and charged Higgs bosons (generalized HEFT, GHEFT) to describe non-minimal electroweak symmetry breaking models. Using the geometrical form of the GHEFT Lagrangian, which can be regarded as a nonlinear sigma model on a scalar manifold, it is shown that the scalar boson scattering amplitudes are described in terms of the Riemann curvature tensor (geometry) of the scalar manifold and the covariant derivatives of the potential. The coefficients of the one-loop divergent terms in the oblique correction parameters S and U can also be written in terms of the Killing vectors (symmetry) and the Riemann curvature tensor (geometry). It is found that perturbative unitarity of the scattering amplitudes involving the Higgs bosons and the longitudinal gauge bosons demands the flatness of the scalar manifold. The relationship between the finiteness of the electroweak oblique corrections and perturbative unitarity of the scattering amplitudes is also clarified in this language: we verify that once the tree-level unitarity is ensured, then the one-loop finiteness of the oblique correction parameters S and U is automatically guaranteed.

Electronics Development for the New Photo-Detectors (PDOM and D-Egg) for IceCube-Upgrade

The planned IceCube-Upgrade will enhance the capability of IceCube in the detection of GeV-scale neutrino physics and enable an improved measurement of the properties of the glacial ice. Three types of new optical sensors will be deployed during the Upgrade: PDOM, D-Egg, and mDOM. Since the design of the PDOM and D-Egg are very similar, the development of the front-end electronics for the two optical sensors has been merged. The photo-electron signals detected by the PMTs are digitized with high-speed ultra-low power ADCs and processed in an FPGA, before being sent to the data acquisition system located on the surface of the South-Pole glacier. The almost final revision of the front-end electronics is equipped with the common microcontroller unit and the communication daughter board for simplifying the communication scheme for the three different modules. This contribution focuses on the design of the front-end electronics and presents first results from the performance tests.

Renormalization Effects on Electric Dipole Moments in Electroweakly Interacting Massive Particle Models

We study the renormalization effects on electric dipole moments in the models with new electroweakly interacting massive fermions. The electric dipole moments are generated by the effective operators which arise from integrating out heavy particles at some scale in the models. We give the renormalization group equation for the Wilson coefficients of the effective operators from the scale where the operators are generated to the electroweak scale. Our numerical studies focus on the electric dipole moments in the mini-split supersymmetric scenario and the electroweakly interacting massive particle dark matter scenario. It turns out that the renormalization effects can give an enhancement factor being of the order of O(10)% in the mini-split scenario and being more than two in the minimal dark matter model.

Singlet Dirac Fermion Dark Matter with Mediators at Loop

We study the phenomenology of singlet Dirac fermion dark matter in the simplified models where the dark matter interacts with the Standard Model particles at loop-level with the help of either colored or non-colored mediators. We especially focus on the implications of non-zero CP phases in the dark sector, which induce the electric dipole moments of the Dirac fermion dark matter as well as those of electron and nucleon. It is then found that the dark matter direct detection searches and the measurements of the electric dipole moments are able to test the singlet Dirac fermion dark matter scenario in the forthcoming experiments.

Model independent evaluation of the Wilson coefficient of the Weinberg operator in QCD

We derive a Wilson coefficient of a CP-violating purely gluonic dimension-6 operator called the Weinberg operator ($GG\tilde{G}$) generated by a scalar and two fermions at the two-loop level. We do not specify the representation of SU(3)$_c$ for the scalar and the fermions, and thus our result can be applied to a variety of models beyond the standard model. We estimate the nucleon EDMs induced by the Weinberg operator in some examples and discuss the importance of measuring EDMs. It is found that future measurements of the EDMs can probe physics at higher energy scale beyond the reach of collider experiments.

Heavy Gravitino from Dynamical Generation of Right-Handed Neutrino Mass Scale, and Gravitational Waves

The absence of supersymmetric particles at the weak scale is a puzzle if supersymmetry solves the gauge hierarchy problem. We show that, if the right-handed neutrino masses arise from hidden gaugino condensation via GUT-suppressed operators, successful thermal leptogenesis leads to the lower bound on the gravitino mass, which may explain the little hierarchy problem. If domain walls associated with the gaugino condensation are formed after inflation, they annihilate when $H \sim m_{3/2}$. We address the possibility that observable gravitational wave signals might emerge from the domain wall annihilation.

Neural-network Kohn-Sham exchange-correlation potential and its out-of-training transferability

We incorporate in the Kohn-Sham self consistent equation a trained neural-network projection from the charge density distribution to the Hartree-exchange-correlation potential $n \rightarrow V_{\rm Hxc}$ for possible numerical approach to the exact Kohn-Sham scheme. The potential trained through a newly developed scheme enables us to evaluate the total energy without explicitly treating the formula of the exchange-correlation energy. With a case study of a simple model we show that the well-trained neural-network $V_{\rm Hxc}$ achieves accuracy for the charge density and total energy out of the model parameter range used for the training, indicating that the property of the elusive ideal functional form of $V_{\rm Hxc}$ can approximately be encapsulated by the machine-learning construction. We also exemplify a factor that crucially limits the transferability--the boundary in the model parameter space where the number of the one-particle bound states changes--and see that this is cured by setting the training parameter range across that boundary. The training scheme and insights from the model study apply to more general systems, opening a novel path to numerically efficient Kohn-Sham potential.

Light Higgsino and Gluino in $R$-invariant Direct Gauge Mediation

We provide a simple solution to the $μ$-$B_μ$ problem in the "$R$-invariant direct gauge mediation model". With the solution, the Higgsino and gluino are predicted to be light as $\mathcal{O}(100)$GeV and $\mathcal{O}(1)$TeV, respectively. Those gluino and Higgsino can be accessible at the LHC and future collider experiments. Moreover, dangerous dimension five operators inducing rapid proton decays are naturally suppressed by the $R$-symmetry.

Classification of simple heavy vector triplet models

We investigate decay modes of spin-1 heavy vector bosons ($V'$) from the viewpoint of perturbative unitarity in a model-independent manner. Perturbative unitarity requires some relations among couplings. The relations are called unitarity sum rules. We derive the unitarity sum rules from processes that contain two fermions and two gauge bosons. We find the relations between $V'$ couplings to the SM fermions $(f)$ and $V'$ couplings to the SM gauge bosons ($V$). Using the coupling relations, we calculate partial decay widths for $V'$ decays into $VV$ and $ff$. We show that Br($W' \to WZ) \lesssim$ 2$\%$ in the system that contains $V'$ and CP-even scalars as well as the SM particles. This result is independent of the number of the CP-even scalars. We also show that contributions of CP-odd scalars help to make Br($W' \to WZ$) larger than Br($W' \to ff$) as long as the CP-odd scalars couple to both the SM fermions and the SM gauge bosons. The existence of the CP-odd scalar couplings is a useful guideline to construct models that predict Br($W' \to WZ) \gtrsim$ 2$\%$. Our analysis relies only on the perturbative unitarity of $f\bar{f} \to WW'$. Therefore our result can be applied to various models.

Unitarity sum rules, three site moose model, and the ATLAS 2 TeV diboson anomalies

We investigate $W'$ interpretations for the ATLAS 2 TeV diboson anomalies. The roles of the unitarity sum rules, which ensure the perturbativity of the longitudinal vector boson scattering amplitudes, are emphasized. We find the unitarity sum rules and the custodial symmetry are powerful enough to predict various nontrivial relations among $WWZ'$, $WZW'$, $WWh$, $WW'h$ and $ZZ'h$ coupling strengths in a model independent manner. We also perform surveys in the general parameter space of $W'$ models and find the ATLAS 2 TeV diboson anomalies may be interpreted as a $W'$ particle of the three site moose model, i.e., a Kaluza-Klein like particle in a deconstructed extra dimension model. It is also shown that the non standard-model-like Higgs boson is favored by the present data to interpret the ATLAS diboson anomalies as the consequences of the $W'$ and $Z'$ bosons.

Effective Theories for Dark Matter Nucleon Scattering

We reformulate the calculation of the dark matter-nucleon scattering cross sections based on the method of effective field theories. We assume that the scatterings are induced by the exchange of colored mediators, and construct the effective theories by integrating out the colored particles. All of the leading order matching conditions as well as the renormalization group equations are presented. We consider a Majorana fermion, and real scalar and vector bosons for the dark matter and show the results for each case. The treatment for the twist-2 operators is discussed in detail, and it is shown that the scale of evaluating their nucleon matrix elements does not have to be the hadronic scale. The effects of the QCD corrections are evaluated on the assumption that the masses of the colored mediators are much heavier than the electroweak scale. Our formulation is systematic and model-independent, and thus suitable to be implemented in numerical packages, such as micrOMEGAs and DarkSUSY.

Tree level unitarity and finiteness of electroweak oblique corrections

We study perturbative unitarity and electroweak oblique corrections in the electroweak symmetry breaking models including an arbitrary number of neutral Higgs bosons. Requiring the perturbative unitarity of the high energy scattering amplitudes of weak gauge bosons and the neutral Higgs bosons at tree level, we obtain a set of conditions among the Higgs coupling strengths (unitarity sum rules). It is shown that the unitarity sum rules require the tree level rho parameter to be 1 if there are only neutral Higgs bosons. Moreover, we find that the one-loop finiteness of the electroweak oblique corrections is automatically guaranteed once the unitarity sum rules are imposed among the Higgs coupling strengths. Applying the unitarity sum rules, we obtain severe constraints on the mass of the second lightest neutral Higgs boson and the lightest neutral Higgs (a 125GeV Higgs) coupling strength from the results of the electroweak precision tests as well as the unitarity.

Does unitarity imply finiteness of electroweak oblique corrections at one-loop? - constraining extra neutral Higgs bosons -

Introducing arbitrary number of neutral Higgs bosons in the electroweak symmetry breaking sector, we derive a set of conditions among Higgs couplings which need to be satisfied to maintain the unitarity of the high energy scattering amplitudes of weak gauge bosons at the tree level (unitarity sum rules). It is shown that the unitarity sum rules require the tree level $ρ$ parameter to be 1, without explicitly invoking the custodial symmetry arguments. The one-loop finiteness of the electroweak oblique corrections is automatically guaranteed once these unitarity sum rules are imposed among Higgs couplings. Severe constraints on the lightest Higgs coupling (125GeV Higgs coupling) and the mass of the second lightest Higgs boson are obtained from the unitarity and the results of the electroweak precision tests (oblique parameter measurements). These results are compared with the effective theory of the light Higgs boson, and we find simple relationships between the mass of the second lightest Higgs boson in our framework and the ultraviolet cutoff in the effective theory framework.
