Charge carrier dynamics of FeSe thin film investigated by terahertz magneto-optical spectroscopy

We performed terahertz magneto-optical spectroscopy of FeSe thin film to elucidate the charge carrier dynamics. The measured diagonal (longitudinal) and off-diagonal (Hall) conductivity spectra are well reproduced by two-carrier Drude model, from which the carrier densities, scattering times and effective masses of electron and hole carriers are determined in a wide range of temperature. The hole density decreases below the structural transition temperature while electron density increases, which is attributed to the band structure modification in the electronic nematic phase. The scattering time of the hole carrier becomes substantially longer than that of the electron at lower temperature, which accounts for the increase of the positive dc Hall coefficient at low temperature.

Light-induced switching to a Metastable Phase in a Layered Superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (x=0.15)

We investigated transient optical responses in an optimally-doped high-Tc superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4 (x=0.15) by using 800-nm optical pump and terahertz probe spectroscopy. With increasing the photoexcitation intensities, the Josephson plasma resonance shows a gradual redshift, indicating the suppression of superconductivity by the photoexcitation. With further increasing the photoexcitation intensities, a new longitudinal mode in the loss function spectrum appears and grows from the high energy side, accompanied by a new transverse mode as manifested in the conductivity spectrum. The observed spectra are described by the multilayer model with alternating interlayer Josephson couplings. The new longitudinal and transverse modes sustain much longer than several hundred picoseconds after the photoexcitation, indicating that the new metastable phase with possessing alternating interlayer Josephson couplings is induced by the strong photoexcitation.

Higgs mode in the d-wave superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x driven by an intense terahertz pulse

We investigated the terahertz (THz)-pulse driven nonlinear response in the d-wave cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi2212) using a THz pump near-infrared probe scheme in the time domain. We have observed an oscillatory behavior of the optical reflectivity that follows the THz electric field squared and is strongly enhanced below Tc. The corresponding third-order nonlinear effect exhibits both A1g and B1g symmetry components, which are decomposed from polarization-resolved measurements. Comparison with a BCS calculation of the nonlinear susceptibility indicates that the A1g component is associated with the Higgs mode of the d-wave order parameter.

Rate equation analysis on the dynamics of first-order exciton Mott transition

We performed a rate equation analysis on the dynamics of exciton Mott transition (EMT) with assuming a detailed balance between excitons and unbound electron-hole (e-h) pairs. Based on the Saha equation with taking into account the empirical expression for the band-gap renormalization effect caused by the unbound e-h pairs, we show that the ionization ratio of excitons exhibits a bistability as a function of total e-h pair density at low temperatures. We demonstrate that an incubation time emerges in the dynamics of EMT from oversaturated exciton gas phase on the verge of the bistable region. The incubation time shows a slowing down behavior when the pair density approaches toward the saddle-node bifurcation of the hysteresis curve of the exciton ionization ratio.

Polarization-resolved terahertz third-harmonic generation in a superconductor NbN: dominance of Higgs mode beyond the BCS approximation

Recent advances in time-domain terahertz (THz) spectroscopy have unveiled that resonantly-enhanced strong THz third-harmonic generation (THG) mediated by the collective Higgs amplitude mode occurs in s-wave superconductors, where charge-density fluctuations (CDF) have also been shown to contribute to the nonlinear third-order susceptibility. It has been theoretically proposed that the nonlinear responses of Higgs and CDF exhibit essentially different polarization dependences. Here we experimentally discriminate the two contributions by polarization-resolved intense THz transmission spectroscopy for a single-crystal NbN film. The result shows that the resonant THG in the transmitted light always appears in the polarization parallel to that of the incident light with no appreciable crystal axis dependence. When we compare this with the theoretical calculation here with the BCS approximation and the dynamical mean-field theory for a model of NbN constructed from first principles, the experimental result strongly indicates that the Higgs mode rather than the CDF dominates the THG resonance in NbN. A possible mechanism for this is discussed such as the retardation effect in the phonon-mediated pairing interaction beyond BCS.

Higgs Amplitude Mode in BCS Superconductors Nb$_{1-x}$Ti$_{x}$N induced by Terahertz Pulse Excitation

Ultrafast responses of BCS superconductor Nb1-xTixN films in a nonadiabatic excitation regime were investigated by using terahertz (THz) pump-THz probe spectroscopy. After an instantaneous excitation with the monocycle THz pump pulse, a transient oscillation emerges in the electromagnetic response in the BCS gap energy region. The oscillation frequency coincides with the asymptotic value of the BCS gap energy, indicating the appearance of the theoretically-anticipated collective amplitude mode of the order parameter, namely the Higgs amplitude mode. Our result opens a new pathway to the ultrafast manipulation of the superconducting order parameter by optical means.

Exciton Mott transition in Si Revealed by Terahertz Spectroscopy

Exciton Mott transition in Si is investigated by using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The excitonic correlation as manifested by the 1s-2p resonance is observed above the Mott density. The scattering rate of charge carriers is prominently enhanced at the proximity of Mott density, which is attributed to the non-vanishing exciton correlation in the metallic electron-hole plasma. Concomitantly, the signature of plasmon-exciton coupling is observed in the loss function spectra.

Chirality of Matter Shows Up via Spin Excitations

Right- and left-handed circularly polarized light interact differently with electronic charges in chiral materials. This asymmetry generates the natural circular dichroism and gyrotropy, also known as the optical activity. Here we demonstrate that optical activity is not a privilege of the electronic charge excitations but it can also emerge for the spin excitations in magnetic matter. The square-lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$ offers an ideal arena to test this idea, since it can be transformed to a chiral form by application of external magnetic fields. As a direct proof of the field-induced chiral state, we observed large optical activity when the light is in resonance with spin excitations at sub-terahertz frequencies. In addition, we found that the magnetochiral effect, the absorption difference for the light beams propagating parallel and anti-parallel to the applied magnetic field, has an exceptionally large amplitude close to 100%. All these features are ascribed to the magnetoelectric nature of spin excitations as they interact both with the electric and magnetic components of light.

Cooling Dynamics of Photoexcited Carriers in Si Studied by Using Optical Pump and Terahertz Probe Spectroscopy

We investigated the photoexcited carrier dynamics in Si by using optical pump and terahertz probe spectroscopy in an energy range between 2 meV and 25 meV. The formation dynamics of excitons from unbound e-h pairs was studied through the emergence of the 1s-2p transition of excitons at 12 meV (3 THz). We revealed the thermalization mechanism of the photo-injected hot carriers (electrons and holes) in the low temperature lattice system by taking account of the interband and intraband scattering of carriers with acoustic and optical phonons. The overall cooling rate of electrons and holes was numerically calculated on the basis of a microscopic analysis of the phonon scattering processes, and the results well account for the experimentally observed carrier cooling dynamics. The long formation time of excitons in Si after the above-gap photoexcitation is reasonably accounted for by the thermalization process of photoexcited carriers.

Optical Hall Effect in the Integer Quantum Hall Regime

Optical Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}(ω)$ is measured from the Faraday rotation for a GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction quantum Hall system in the terahertz frequency regime. The Faraday rotation angle ($\sim$ fine structure constant $\sim$ mrad) is found to significantly deviate from the Drude-like behavior to exhibit a plateau-like structure around the Landau-level filling $ν=2$. The result, which fits with the behavior expected from the carrier localization effect in the ac regime, indicates that the plateau structure, although not quantized, still exists in the terahertz regime.
