On a Verdier quotient of a derived category of a local ring

Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian local ring with residue field $k$. Denote by $\mathsf{D^b}(R)$ the bounded derived category of finitely generated $R$-modules. In this paper, we study the structure of the Verdier quotient $\mathsf{D^b}(R)/\mathsf{thick}(R\oplus k)$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for it to admit an additive generator.

Cryogenic spin Peltier effect detected by a RuO$_2$-AlO$_x$ on-chip microthermometer

We report electric detection of the spin Peltier effect (SPE) in a bilayer consisting of a Pt film and a Y$_{3}$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (YIG) single crystal at the cryogenic temperature $T$ as low as 2 K based on a RuO$_2$$-$AlO$_x$ on-chip thermometer film. By means of a reactive co-sputtering technique, we successfully fabricated RuO$_2$$-$AlO$_x$ films having a large temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of $\sim 100\% ~\textrm{K}^{-1}$ at around $2~\textrm{K}$. By using the RuO$_2$$-$AlO$_x$ film as an on-chip temperature sensor for a Pt/YIG device, we observe a SPE-induced temperature change on the order of sub-$μ\textrm{K}$, the sign of which is reversed with respect to the external magnetic field $B$ direction. We found that the SPE signal gradually decreases and converges to zero by increasing $B$ up to $10~\textrm{T}$. The result is attributed to the suppression of magnon excitations due to the Zeeman-gap opening in the magnon dispersion of YIG, whose energy much exceeds the thermal energy at 2 K.

On the vanishing of Ext modules over a local unique factorization domain with an isolated singularity

This paper provides a method to get a noetherian equicharacteristic local UFD with an isolated singularity from a given noetherian complete equicharacteristic local ring, preserving certain properties. This is applied to invesitgate the (non)vanishing of Ext modules. It is proved that there exist a Gorenstein local UFD $A$ having an isolated singularity such that $\operatorname{Ext}_A^{\gg0}(M,N)=0$ does not imply $\operatorname{Ext}_A^{\gg0}(N,M)=0$, a Gorenstein local UFD $B$ having an isolated singularity such that $\operatorname{Tor}_{>0}^B(M,N)=0$ does not imply $\operatorname{depth}(M\otimes_B N)=\operatorname{depth} M+\operatorname{depth} N-\operatorname{depth} B$, and a Cohen-Macaulay local UFD $C$ having an isolated singularity such that $\operatorname{Ext}_C^{>0}(M,C)=0$ does not imply the total reflexivity of $M$.

Vanishing of DHKK complexities for singularity categories and generation of syzygy modules

Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. In this paper, we study, for the singularity category of R, the vanishing of the complexity $δ_t(X,Y)$ in the sense of Dimitrov, Haiden, Katzarkov and Kontsevich. We prove that the set of real numbers t such that $δ_t(X,Y)$ does not vanish is bounded in various cases. We do it by building the high syzygy modules and maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules out of a single module only by taking direct summands and extensions.

Classifying preaisles of derived categories of complete intersections

Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring. Denote by $\operatorname{mod}R$ the category of finitely generated $R$-modules, by $\operatorname{D^b}(R)$ the bounded derived category of $\operatorname{mod}R$, and by $\operatorname{D_{sg}}(R)$ the singularity category of $R$. The main result of this paper provides, when $R$ is a complete intersection, a complete classification of the preaisles of $\operatorname{D^b}(R)$ containing $R$ and closed under direct summands, which includes as restrictions the classification of thick subcategories of $\operatorname{D_{sg}}(R)$ due to Stevenson, and the classification of resolving subcategories of $\operatorname{mod}R$ due to Dao and Takahashi.

On a generalization of Ulrich modules and its applications

We study a modified version of the classical Ulrich modules, which we call $c$-Ulrich. Unlike the traditional setting, $c$-Ulrich modules always exist. We prove that these modules retain many of the essential properties and applications observed in the literature. Additionally, we reveal their significance as obstructions to Cohen-Macaulay properties of tensor products. Leveraging this insight, we show the utility of these modules in testing the finiteness of homological dimensions across various scenarios.

Ring homomorphisms and local rings with quasi-decomposable maximal ideal

The notion of local rings with quasi-decomposable maximal ideal was formally introduced by Nasseh and Takahashi. In separate works, the authors of the present paper show that such rings have rigid homological properties; for instance, they are both Ext- and Tor-friendly. One point of this paper is to further explore the homological properties of these rings and also introduce new classes of such rings from a combinatorial point of view. Another point is to investigate how far some of these homological properties can be pushed along certain diagrams of local ring homomorphisms.

Bulk-edge correspondence of Stiefel-Whitney and Euler insulators through the entanglement spectrum and cutting procedure

We propose an unconventional bulk-edge correspondence for two-dimensional Stiefel-Whitney insulators and Euler insulators, which are topological insulators protected by the $PT$ symmetry. We find that, although the energy spectrum under the open boundary condition is generally gapped, the entanglement spectrum is gapless when the Stiefel-Whitney or Euler class is nonzero. The robustness of the gapless spectrum for Stiefel-Whitney insulator can be understood through an emergent anti-unitary particle-hole symmetry. For the Euler insulators, we propose a conjecture, which is supported by our numerical calculation, that the Euler class is equal to the number of crossing in the entanglement spectrum, taking into account the degree of the crossings. We also discuss that these crossings of the entanglement spectrum are related to the gap closing points in the cutting procedure, which is the energy spectrum as the magnitude of the boundary hopping is varied.

Cofiniteness of local cohomology modules and subcategories of modules

Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring and $I$ an ideal of $R$. Assume that for all integers $i$ the local cohomology module $H_I^i(R)$ is $I$-cofinite. Suppose that $R_\mathfrak{p}$ is a regular local ring for all prime ideals $\mathfrak{p}$ that do not contain $I$. In this paper, we prove that if the $I$-cofinite modules forms an abelian category, then for all finitely generated $R$-modules $M$ and all integers $i$, the local cohomology module $H_I^i(M)$ is $I$-cofinite.

Annihilators and decompositions of singularity categories

Given any commutative Noetherian ring $R$ and an element $x$ in $R$, we consider the full subcategory $\C(x)$ of its singularity category consisting of objects for which the morphism that is given by the multiplication by $x$ is zero. Our main observation is that we can establish a relation between $\C(x), \C(y)$ and $\C(xy)$ for any two ring elements $x$ and $y$. Utilizing this observation, we obtain a decomposition of the singularity category and consequently an upper bound on the dimension of the singularity category.

Auslander-Reiten conjecture and finite injective dimension of Hom

For a finitely generated module $ M $ over a commutative Noetherian ring $R$, we settle the Auslander-Reiten conjecture when at least one of ${\rm Hom}_R(M,R)$ and ${\rm Hom}_R(M,M)$ has finite injective dimension. A number of new characterizations of Gorenstein local rings are also obtained in terms of vanishing of certain Ext and finite injective dimension of Hom.

Rings with q-torsionfree canonical modules

Let A be a Noetherian local ring with canonical module K. We characterize A when K is a torsionless, reflexive, or q-torsionfree module. If A is a Cohen-Macaulay ring, H.-B. Foxby proved in 1974 that the A-module K is q-torsionfree if and only if the ring A is q-Gorenstein. With mild assumptions, we provide a generalization of Foxby's result to arbitrary Noetherian local rings admitting the canonical module. In particular, since the reflexivity of the canonical module is closely related to the ring being Gorenstein in low codimension, we also explore quasi-normal rings, introduced by W. V. Vasconcelos. We provide several examples as well.

Hidden Symmetry Protection and Topology in Surface Maxwell Waves

Since the latter half of the 20th century, the use of metal in optics has become a promising plasmonics field for controlling light at a deep subwavelength scale. Surface plasmon polaritons localized on metal surfaces are crucial in plasmonics. However, despite the long history of plasmonics, the underlying mechanism producing the surface waves is not fully understood. This study unveils the hidden symmetry protection that ensures the existence of degenerated electric zero modes. These zero modes are identified as physical origins of surface plasmon polaritons, and similar zero modes can be directly excited at a temporal boundary. In real space, the zero modes possess vector-field rotation related to surface impedance. Focusing on the surface impedance, we prove the bulk-edge correspondence, which guarantees the existence of surface plasmon polaritons even with nonuniformity. Lastly, we extract the underlying physics in the topological transition between metal and dielectric material using a minimal circuit model with duality. The transition is considered the crossover between electric and magnetic zero modes.

Faltings' annihilator theorem and t-structures of derived categories

In this paper, we prove Faltings' annihilator theorem for complexes over a CM-excellent ring. As an application, we give a complete classification of the t-structures of the bounded derived category of finitely generated modules over a CM-excellent ring of finite Krull dimension.

On the categorical entropy of the Frobenius pushforward functor

In this paper, we consider the Frobenius pushforward endofunctor $F_\ast$ of the bounded derived category of finitely generated modules over an $F$-finite noetherian local ring. We completely determine the categorical entropy of $F_\ast$ in the sense of Dimitrov, Haiden, Katzarkov, and Kontsevich.

Maximal Cohen-Macaulay tensor products and vanishing of Ext modules

In this paper, we investigate the maximal Cohen-Macaulay property of tensor products of modules, and then give criteria for projectivity of modules in terms of vanishing of Ext modules. One of the applications shows that the Auslander-Reiten conjecture holds for Cohen-Macaulay normal rings.

Are Prompt-based Models Clueless?

Finetuning large pre-trained language models with a task-specific head has advanced the state-of-the-art on many natural language understanding benchmarks. However, models with a task-specific head require a lot of training data, making them susceptible to learning and exploiting dataset-specific superficial cues that do not generalize to other datasets. Prompting has reduced the data requirement by reusing the language model head and formatting the task input to match the pre-training objective. Therefore, it is expected that few-shot prompt-based models do not exploit superficial cues. This paper presents an empirical examination of whether few-shot prompt-based models also exploit superficial cues. Analyzing few-shot prompt-based models on MNLI, SNLI, HANS, and COPA has revealed that prompt-based models also exploit superficial cues. While the models perform well on instances with superficial cues, they often underperform or only marginally outperform random accuracy on instances without superficial cues.

Rotoinversion-symmetric bulk-hinge correspondence and its applications to higher-order Weyl semimetals

We give a bulk-hinge correspondence for higher-order topological phases protected by rotoinversion $C_{4}\mathcal{I}$ symmetry in magnetic systems. Our approach allows us to show the emergence of the chiral hinge modes only from the information of the $C_{4}\mathcal{I}$ eigenvalues at the high-symmetry points in the Brillouin zone. In addition, based on the bulk-hinge correspondence, we propose a class of higher-order Weyl semimetals (HOWSMs) being Weyl semimetals with hinge modes and Fermi-arc surface states. The HOWSM is characterized by topological invariants for three-dimensional higher-order topological insulators, and the topological invariants are determined by the $C_{4}\mathcal{I}$ symmetry eigenvalues at the high-symmetry points. This HOWSM has chiral hinge modes as a direct consequence of the three-dimensional higher-order topology in the bulk.
