DNS of Taylor-Couette flow between counter-rotating cylinders at small radius ratio

A counter-rotating Taylor-Couette flow with relatively small radius ratios of $η$ = 0.2--0.5 was investigated over a wide range of the Reynolds number, from laminar to turbulent regime, by means of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. We investigated the $η$ dependence of the flow structure and determined a critical value between $η$ = 0.2 and 0.3, below which, the stable outer cylinder side exhibited a modal structure that was different from the Taylor-vortex flow on the inner side. At $η\geq$ 0.3, the Taylor-vortex on the unstable inner side dominated the entire flow field between the cylinders, whose footprints were observed in the vicinity of the outer cylinder wall. However, for $η$ = 0.2, the influence from the inner side was limited up to the centre of the cylinder gap. Moreover, on the stable outer cylinder side, there appeared a modal structure that was axially homogeneous, azimuthally periodic, and similar to the Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) instability wave. As the Reynolds number increased with a fixed $η$ = 0.2, the modal structure changed its azimuthal wavenumber and thickened radially in the wall unit. Although the Reynolds shear stress on the outer side remained approximately zero, the intensity of the velocity fluctuations was comparable to the Taylor-vortex flows in the central part.

First demonstration of gamma-ray imaging using balloon-borne emulsion telescope

We promote the precise gamma-ray observation project Gamma-Ray Astro-Imager with Nuclear Emulsion (GRAINE), which uses balloon-borne emulsion gamma-ray telescopes. The emulsion telescope realizes observations with high angular resolution, polarization sensitivity, and large aperture area in the 0.01--100 GeV energy region. Herein, we report the data analysis of emulsion tracks and the first demonstration of gamma-ray imaging via an emulsion telescope by using the flight data from the balloon experiment performed in 2015 (GRAINE 2015). The emulsion films were scanned by the latest read-out system for a total area of 41 m$^2$ in three months, and then the gamma-ray event selection was automatically processed. Millions of electron-pair events are accumulated in the balloon-borne emulsion telescope. The emulsion telescope detected signals from a calibration source (gamma rays from the interaction of cosmic rays with an aluminum plate) with a high significance during the balloon observation and created a gamma-ray image consistent with the source size and the expected angular resolution in the energy range of 100--300 MeV. The flight performance obtained in the GRAINE 2015 experiment proves that balloon-borne emulsion telescope experiments with larger area are feasible while maintaining expected imaging performance.

The Geometry of Concurrent Interaction: Handling Multiple Ports by Way of Multiple Tokens (Long Version)

We introduce a geometry of interaction model for Mazza's multiport interaction combinators, a graph-theoretic formalism which is able to faithfully capture concurrent computation as embodied by process algebras like the $π$-calculus. The introduced model is based on token machines in which not one but multiple tokens are allowed to traverse the underlying net at the same time. We prove soundness and adequacy of the introduced model. The former is proved as a simulation result between the token machines one obtains along any reduction sequence. The latter is obtained by a fine analysis of convergence, both in nets and in token machines.

Superconductivity of FeSe0.5Te0.5 Thin Films Grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition

FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films with PbO-type structure are successfully grown on MgO(100) and LaSrAlO4(001) substrates from FeSe0.5Te0.5 or FeSe0.5Te0.75 polycrystalline targets by pulsed-laser deposition. The film deposited on the MgO substrate (film thickness ~ 55 nm) shows superconductivity at 10.6 K (onset) and 9.2 K (zero resistivity). On the other hand, the film deposited on the LaSrAlO4 substrate (film thickness ~ 250 nm) exhibits superconductivity at 5.4 K (onset) and 2.7 K (zero resistivity). This suggests the strong influence of substrate materials and/or the c-axis length to superconducting properties of FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films.

Superconductivity of FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ Thin Films Grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition

FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ thin films with PbO-type structure are successfully grown on MgO(100) and LaSrAlO$_{4}$(001) substrates from FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x+d}$ polycrystalline targets by pulsed-laser deposition. The film deposited on the MgO substrate (film thickness $\sim$ 63 nm) shows superconductivity at 6.7 K (onset) and 5.5 K (zero resistivity). On the other hand, the film deposited on the LaSrAlO$_{4}$ substrate (film thickness $\sim$ 52 nm) exhibits only the onset of superconducting transition at 2.6 K, but does not show zero resistivity. This indicates the strong influence of epitaxial strain to superconducting properties of FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ thin films.
