A novel technique for the measurement of the avalanche fluctuation of gaseous detectors

We have developed a novel technique for the measurement of the avalanche fluctuation of gaseous detectors using a UV laser. The technique is simple and requires a short data-taking time of about ten minutes. Furthermore, it is applicable for relatively low gas gains. Our experimental setup as well as the measurement principle, and the results obtained with a stack of Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs) operated in several gas mixtures are presented.

Double-hit separation and dE/dx resolution of a time projection chamber with GEM readout

A time projection chamber (TPC) with micropattern gaseous detector (MPGD) readout is investigated as main tracking device of the International Large Detector (ILD) concept at the planned International Linear Collider (ILC). A prototype TPC equipped with a triple gas electron multiplier (GEM) readout has been built and operated in an electron test beam. The TPC was placed in a 1 T solenoidal field at the DESY II Test Beam Facility, which provides an electron beam up to 6 GeV/c. The performance of the readout modules, in particular the spatial point resolution, is determined and compared to earlier tests. New studies are presented with first results on the separation of close-by tracks and the capability of the system to measure the specific energy loss dE/dx. This is complemented by a simulation study on the optimization of the readout granularity to improve particle identification by dE/dx.

$m_b$ at $m_H$: the running bottom quark mass and the Higgs boson

We present a new measurement of the bottom quark mass in the $\bar{MS}$ scheme at the renormalization scale of the Higgs boson mass from measurements of Higgs boson decay rates at the LHC: $m_b(m_H)= 2.60^{+0.36}_{-0.31}$ GeV. The measurement has a negligible theory uncertainty and excellent prospects to improve at the HL-LHC and a future Higgs factory. Confronting this result, and $m_b(m_b)$ from low-energy measurements and $m_b(m_Z)$ from $Z-$pole data, with the prediction of the scale evolution of the renormalization group equations, we find strong evidence for the "running" of the bottom quark mass.

Probing heavy Majorana neutrino pair production at ILC in a $U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ extension of the Standard Model

We consider a gauged B$-$L (Baryon number minus Lepton number) extension of the Standard Model (SM), which is anomaly free in the presence of three SM singlet Right Handed Neutrinos (RHNs). Associated with the $U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ gauge symmetry breaking, the RHNs acquire Majorana masses and then with the electroweak symmetry breaking, tiny Majorana masses for the SM(-like) neutrinos are naturally generated by the seesaw mechanism. As a result of the seesaw mechanism, the heavy mass eigenstates which are mainly composed of the SM-singlet RHNs obtain suppressed electroweak interactions through small mixings with the SM neutrinos. To investigate the seesaw mechanism, we study the pair production of heavy Majorana neutrinos through the $U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ gauge boson $Z^\prime$ at the 250 GeV and 500 GeV International Linear Collider (ILC). Considering the current and prospective future bounds on the B$-$L model parameters from the search for a resonant $Z^\prime$ boson production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we focus on a "smoking-gun" signature of the Majorana nature of the heavy neutrinos: a final state with a pair of same-sign, same-flavor leptons, small missing momentum, and four hadronic jets. We estimate the projected significance of the signature at the ILC.

Prospects for the measurement of the $b$-quark mass at the ILC

This note presents an analysis of the potential of future high-energy electron-positron colliders to measure the $b$-quark mass. We perform a full-simulation study of the measurement of the ratio of the three-jet rates in events with $b\bar{b}(g)$ and $q\bar{q}(g)$ production, $R_{3}^{bl}$, and assess the dominant uncertainties, including theory and experimental systematic uncertainties. We find that the ILC "Higgs factory" stage, with an integrated luminosity of 2 ab$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=$ 250 GeV can measure the $b-$quark $bar{MS}$ mass at a scale of 250 GeV ($m_b(250~$GeV$)$) with a precision of 1 GeV. From this result we extrapolate the potential of the GigaZ run running at $\sqrt{s}= m_Z$. We expect $m_b(m_Z)$ can be determined with an 0.12 GeV uncertainty, exceeding the precision of the LEP and SLD measurements by a factor $\sim$3.

ILC Study Questions for Snowmass 2021

To aid contributions to the Snowmass 2021 US Community Study on physics at the International Linear Collider and other proposed $e^+e^-$ colliders, we present a list of study questions that could be the basis of useful Snowmass projects. We accompany this with links to references and resources on $e^+e^-$ physics, and a description of a new software framework that we are preparing for $e^+e^-$ studies at Snowmass.

Development of novel silicon sensors with high time and spatial resolution

Silicon pad sensors with novel functions of higher timing resolution (LGAD: Low Gain Avalanche Detector) and higher position resolution (PSD: Position Sensitive Detector) are studied for an application to Silicon-Tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter for a detector of the International Linear Collider (ILC). Prototype sensors are fabricated, equipped with dedicated ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits) and tested with a positron beam as well as a radioisotope. The first results of the measurements of timing resolution with LGADs and position reconstruction with PSDs are reported.

Study and optimization of the spatial resolution for detectors with binary readout

Using simulations and analytical approaches, we have studied single hit resolutions obtained with a binary readout, which is often proposed for high granularity detectors to reduce the generated data volume. Our simulations considering several parameters (e.g. strip pitch) show that the detector geometry and an electronics parameter of the binary readout chips could be optimized for binary readout to offer an equivalent spatial resolution to the one with an analogue readout. To understand the behavior as a function of simulation parameters, we developed analytical models that reproduce simulation results with a few parameters. The models can be used to optimize detector designs and operation conditions with regard to the spatial resolution.

A Time Projection Chamber with GEM-Based Readout

For the International Large Detector concept at the planned International Linear Collider, the use of time projection chambers (TPC) with micro-pattern gas detector readout as the main tracking detector is investigated. In this paper, results from a prototype TPC, placed in a 1 T solenoidal field and read out with three independent GEM-based readout modules, are reported. The TPC was exposed to a 6 GeV electron beam at the DESY II synchrotron. The efficiency for reconstructing hits, the measurement of the drift velocity, the space point resolution and the control of field inhomogeneities are presented.

Measuring the top Yukawa coupling at the ILC at sqrt(s) = 500 GeV

We report on the feasibility of the direct measurement of the top Yukawa coupling g_t at the International Linear Collider (ILC) during its first phase of operation with a center-of-mass energy of 500 GeV. The signal and background models incorporate the non-relativistic QCD corrections which enhance the production cross section near the t-tbar threshold. The e+e- -> t tbar H signal is reconstructed in the 6-jet + lepton and the 8-jet modes. The results from the two channels are combined. The background processes considered are e+e- -> t bbar W- / tbar b W+ (which includes e+e- -> t tbar), e+e- -> t tbar Z, and e+e- -> t tbar g* -> t tbar b bar. We use a realistic fast Monte-Carlo detector simulation. Signal events are selected using event shape variables, through jet clustering, and by identifying heavy flavor jets. Assuming a Higgs mass of 120 GeV, polarized electron and positron beams with (Pe-,Pe+) = (-0.8,+0.3), and an integrated luminosity of 1 ab-1, we estimate that the e+e- -> t tbar H events can be seen with a statistical significance of 5.2 sigma, corresponding to the relative top Yukawa coupling measurement accuracy of |Delta g_t / g_t| = 10%.

A study of top-quark Yukawa coupling measurement in e+e- -> t tbar H at sqrt(s) = 500 GeV

We report on the feasibility of measuring the top Yukawa coupling in the process: $e^+e^-\to t\bar{t}H$. This measurement is crucial to test the mass generation mechanism for matter particles. Since the cross section for this process attains its maximum around $\sqrt{s}=700 $GeV, most of the past studies were done assuming this energy region. It has been pointed out, however, that the QCD threshold correction enhances the cross section significantly and might enable its measurement at $\sqrt{s}=500 $GeV, which will be accessible already in the first phase of the ILC project. We have implemented this threshold enhancement into our $t\bar{t}H$ event generator and carried out Monte Carlo simulations. Our results show that $t\bar{t}H$ events can be observed with a significance of $4.1\,σ$ with no beam polarization and $5.4 σ$ with the $e^-$ and $e^+$ beam polarization combination: $(-0.8,+0.3)$.

Tau-pair Performance in ILD detectors

Tau-pair process has been analyzed in the ILD detector model as a benchmark process for LoI. Results of background rejection, forward-backward asymmetry and polarization measurements are obtained with full detector simulation. Impact of detector parameters for tau-pair analysis is also discussed in this paper.
