Radiative Efficiency Enhancement by Electromagnetic Energy Dissipation in Strongly Magnetized Supercritical Accretion Flows around Kerr Black Holes

We investigate how black hole spin and the amount of magnetic flux affect electromagnetic energy dissipation and radiation transport in supercritical accretion flows. For this purpose, we perform general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulations of MAD and SANE accretion flows with different black hole spins. In the high-spin MAD model, we find that a fraction of the electromagnetic energy extracted by the Blandford--Znajek mechanism is dissipated near the disk surface in the vicinity of the black hole. This dissipation significantly contributes to the generation of radiative energy and enhances the luminosity. The time-averaged radiative efficiency reaches $\eta_{\rm rad}=0.60$, which is much larger than $0.088$ for the non-spinning black hole case and $0.21$ for the weak-magnetic-flux case, corresponding to the SANE state. As a result, the effective trapping radius, defined as the radius at which the outward radiative luminosity becomes equal to the inward radiative luminosity, is $r_{\rm trap}=2.5r_{\rm g}$, comparable to the ISCO radius. This value is significantly smaller than $12r_{\rm g}$ for the non-spinning case and $8.5r_{\rm g}$ for the SANE state. These results suggest that the amount of magnetic flux accumulated on the black hole can affect the radiative properties of supercritical accretion flows and should therefore be considered, in addition to black hole mass, spin, and mass accretion rate, when interpreting observed luminosities and spectra.

Fermionic Anomalies of Finite Symmetries on Lattices

We develop a lattice characterization of fermionic 't Hooft anomalies of finite internal symmetries in (1+1)D and (2+1)D, formulated in terms of obstructions to symmetric short-range-entangled (SRE) states. We consider lattice systems formed by tensor product of onsite fermionic and bosonic Hilbert spaces, and finite internal symmetry given by a central extension $\mathbb Z_2^F\to G_f\to G_b$. We extract a hierarchy of fermionic anomaly indices for a given symmetry operator. In (1+1)D, an exact lattice symmetry is characterized by a pair of cohomological data $(n_2,\nu_3)$. For $G_f=G_b\times\mathbb Z_2^F$, we show that a symmetry with trivial anomaly indices $(n_2,\nu_3)$ is onsiteable and hence admits a symmetric SRE state, establishing that these indices faithfully detect the lattice anomaly. Comparing with continuum QFT, we find that exact lattice symmetries do not realize the additional $H^1(BG_b,\mathbb Z_2)$ anomaly layer in continuum QFT. In particular, for $G_b=\mathbb Z_2$, exact lattice symmetries realize only the even $\mathbb Z_4$ subgroup of the continuum $\mathbb Z_8$ classification. In (2+1)D, we identify three successive anomaly layers of cohomological data $(n_2,n_3,\nu_4)$. We show that a nontrivial value of any layer obstructs a symmetric SRE state. For $G_f=G_b\times\mathbb Z_2^F$, it also forbids a symmetric invertible state. We find that the lattice obstruction to invertible states does not generally coincide with the continuum 't Hooft anomaly. We explicitly construct a $\mathbb Z_4^F$ lattice symmetry in (2+1)D with nontrivial lattice anomaly index that forbids any symmetric invertible states, even though its continuum anomaly is trivial. Our results highlight a mismatch between lattice and continuum fermionic anomalies and motivate a systematic study of which continuum anomalies admit exact microscopic lattice realizations.

Sixteen-Fold Way for Fermionic Topological Orders

Fermionic topological orders can host 't Hooft anomalies with no bosonic counterpart. We identify a new sixteen-fold family of (2+1)D fermionic topological orders, forming a fermionic analogue of Kitaev's sixteen-fold way. This family is distinguished by the mod 16 't Hooft anomaly of a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ one-form symmetry, generated in each theory by a single nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ anyon. This intrinsically fermionic anomaly permits anyon spins that are forbidden in bosonic phases; the simplest new example is an Abelian fermionic topological order containing a single $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Abelian anyon of spin 1/8. Each theory can be realized as the gapped boundary of a (3+1)D fermionic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase protected by the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ one-form symmetry, which acquires a $\mathbb{Z}_{16}$ classification once the spacetime spin structure is twisted by the one-form symmetry. We realize these phases microscopically via lattice models built from Walker-Wang models coupled to local fermions.

Invariants of Sequential Circuits and Generalized Non-Abelian Statistics

Non-invertible symmetries in quantum many-body systems generally give rise to sequential unitary circuits that move symmetry defects. In this paper, we investigate invariants defined by sequences of such circuits, which move non-invertible defects and generate a Berry phase evaluated on quantum states with defects. We show that this Berry phase generally defines an invariant under local deformations, provided that the sequential circuits preserve the locality of those deformations. This invariant also rules out a short-range-entangled state that preserves the non-invertible symmetry, thereby signaling the 't Hooft anomaly of a non-invertible symmetry purely in terms of unitary operators acting on a state. We then apply this framework to loop excitations in three spatial dimensions and identify a new loop excitation in the (3+1)D $\mathbb{D}_4$ topological order, which we dub a non-Abelian fermionic loop. Using the invariant of sequential circuits, we characterize the statistics of non-Abelian fermionic loops. In addition, we find a new (3+1)D mixed topological order with a single non-Abelian fermionic loop, whose long-range entanglement is protected by an invariant of sequential circuits.

Exploring Entropic Orders: High Temperature Continuous Symmetry Breaking, Chiral Topological States and Local Commuting Projector Models

High temperature is usually expected to destroy order: as the Gibbs state approaches the infinite-temperature limit, it becomes an equal-weight ensemble over all states and the system is generically disordered. Recent works showed that entropic order can violate this expectation through coupling to bosons in classical lattice models and quantum field theories, where the ordered states have higher entropy. Here we present new analytic methods for constructing quantum lattice models that exhibit entropic orders. In particular, we construct quantum lattice models with continuous symmetry breaking at high temperature in 1+1 dimensions and clarify how entropic order can evade the Hohenberg-Mermin-Wagner theorems. We also construct high-temperature entropic $p+ip$ chiral topological superconducting states in 2+1 dimensions with temperature-independent anyon correlation functions. In addition, we obtain a broad family of high-temperature entropic non-chiral topological orders. We show that the entropic topological orders have strong higher form symmetries at high temperature unlike the conventional topological orders, and the symmetry is spontaneously broken. These results follow from two general constructions that couple a given lattice model with a low-temperature ordered phase either to ordered bosons or, for local commuting-projector Hamiltonians, to more general bosonic degrees of freedom.

Exact $\mathbb{Z}_2$ electromagnetic duality of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ toric code is non-Clifford

The 2D $\mathbb{Z}_2$ toric code admits a global symmetry exchanging electric and magnetic quasiparticles, known as electromagnetic duality. Known realizations include lattice translation symmetry, an exact $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry generated by a Clifford circuit, and an exact $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry generated by a non-Clifford circuit. We show that a Clifford electromagnetic duality cannot realize an exact internal $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. This is proved rigorously for symmetries with coarse translation invariance by $l$ lattice units for generic odd $l$. Therefore an exact internal $\mathbb{Z}_2$ electromagnetic duality must be non-Clifford, whereas generic internal Clifford realization necessarily has $\mathbb{Z}_{2^m}$ algebra with $m\ge 2$. Our result suggests an unexpected connection between the algebra of exact electromagnetic duality and Clifford hierarchy of circuits.

Anyonic membranes and Pontryagin statistics

Anyons, unique to two spatial dimensions, underlie extraordinary phenomena such as the fractional quantum Hall effect, but their generalization to higher dimensions has remained elusive. The topology of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces constrains the loop statistics to be only bosonic or fermionic in any dimension. In this work, we introduce the novel anyonic statistics for membrane excitations in four dimensions. Analogous to the $\mathbb{Z}_N$-particle exhibiting $\mathbb{Z}_{N\times \gcd(2,N)}$ anyonic statistics in two dimensions, we show that the $\mathbb{Z}_N$-membrane possesses $\mathbb{Z}_{N\times \gcd(3,N)}$ anyonic statistics in four dimensions. Given unitary volume operators that create membrane excitations on the boundary, we propose an explicit 56-step unitary sequence that detects the membrane statistics. We further analyze the boundary theory of $(5{+}1)$D 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_N$ symmetry-protected topological phases and demonstrate that their domain walls realize all possible anyonic membrane statistics. We then show that the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ subgroup persists in all higher dimensions. In addition to the standard fermionic $\mathbb{Z}_2$ membrane statistics arising from Stiefel-Whitney classes, membranes also exhibit $\mathbb{Z}_3$ statistics associated with Pontryagin classes. We explicitly verify that the 56-step process detects the nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}_3$ statistics in 5, 6, and 7 spatial dimensions. Moreover, in 7 and higher dimensions, the statistics of membrane excitations stabilize to $\mathbb{Z}_{2} \times \mathbb{Z}_{3}$, with the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ sector consistently captured by this process.

Soft symmetries of topological orders

(2+1)D topological orders possess emergent symmetries given by a group $\text{Aut}(\mathcal{C})$, which consists of the braided tensor autoequivalences of the modular tensor category $\mathcal{C}$ that describes the anyons. In this paper we discuss cases where $\text{Aut}(\mathcal{C})$ has elements that neither permute anyons nor are associated to any symmetry fractionalization but are still non-trivial, which we refer to as soft symmetries. We point out that one can construct topological defects corresponding to such exotic symmetry actions by decorating with a certain class of gauged SPT states that cannot be distinguished by their torus partition function. This gives a physical interpretation to work by Davydov on soft braided tensor autoequivalences. This has a number of important implications for the classification of gapped boundaries, non-invertible spontaneous symmetry breaking, and the general classification of symmetry-enriched topological phases of matter. We also demonstrate analogous phenomena in higher dimensions, such as (3+1)D gauge theory with gauge group given by the quaternion group $Q_8$.

Non-Abelian qLDPC: TQFT Formalism, Addressable Gauging Measurement and Application to Magic State Fountain on 2D Product Codes

A fundamental problem of fault-tolerant quantum computation with quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes is the tradeoff between connectivity and universality. It is widely believed that in order to perform native logical non-Clifford gates, one needs to resort to 3D product-code constructions. In this work, we extend Kitaev's framework of non-Abelian topological codes on manifolds to non-Abelian qLDPC codes (realized as Clifford-stabilizer codes) and the corresponding combinatorial topological quantum field theories (TQFT) defined on Poincaré CW complexes and certain types of general chain complexes. We also construct the spacetime path integrals as topological invariants on these complexes. Remarkably, we show that native non-Clifford logical gates can be realized using constant-rate 2D hypergraph-product codes and their Clifford-stabilizer variants. This is achieved by a spacetime path integral effectively implementing the addressable gauging measurement of a new type of 0-form subcomplex symmetries, which correspond to addressable transversal Clifford gates and become higher-form symmetries when lifted to higher-dimensional CW complexes or manifolds. Building on this structure, we apply the gauging protocol to the magic state fountain scheme for parallel preparation of $O(\sqrt{n})$ disjoint CZ magic states with code distance of $O(\sqrt{n})$, using a total number of $n$ qubits.

Higher-Form Anomalies on Lattices

Higher-form symmetry in a tensor product Hilbert space is always emergent: the symmetry generators become genuinely topological only when the Gauss law is energetically enforced at low energies. In this paper, we present a general method for defining the 't Hooft anomaly of higher-form symmetries in lattice models built on a tensor product Hilbert space. In (2+1)D, for given Gauss law operators realized by finite-depth circuits that generate a finite 1-form $G$ symmetry, we construct an index representing a cohomology class in $H^4(B^2G, U(1))$, which characterizes the corresponding 't Hooft anomaly. This construction generalizes the Else-Nayak characterization of 0-form symmetry anomalies. More broadly, under the assumption of a specified formulation of the $p$-form $G$ symmetry action and Hilbert space structure in arbitrary $d$ spatial dimensions, we show how to characterize the 't Hooft anomaly of the symmetry action by an index valued in $H^{d+2}(B^{p+1}G, U(1))$.

Pauli stabilizer formalism for topological quantum field theories and generalized statistics

Topological quantum field theory (TQFT) provides a unifying framework for describing topological phases of matter and for constructing quantum error-correcting codes, playing a central role across high-energy physics, condensed matter, and quantum information. A central challenge is to formulate topological order on lattices and to extract the properties of topological excitations from microscopic Hamiltonians. In this work, we construct new classes of lattice gauge theories as Pauli stabilizer models, realizing a wide range of TQFTs in general dimensions. We develop a lattice description of extended excitations and systematically determine their generalized statistics. Our main example is the (4+1)D fermionic-loop toric code, obtained by condensing the $e^2m^2$-loop in the (4+1)D $\mathbb Z_4$ toric code. We show that the loop excitation exhibits fermionic loop statistics: the 24-step loop-flipping process yields a phase of $-1$. Our Pauli stabilizer models realize all twisted 2-form gauge theories in (4+1)D, the higher-form Dijkgraaf-Witten TQFT classified by $H^5(B^2G,U(1))$. Beyond (4+1)D, the fermionic-loop toric codes form a family of $\mathbb Z_2$ topological orders in arbitrary dimensions, realized as explicit Pauli stabilizer codes using $\mathbb Z_4$ qudits. Finally, we develop a Pauli-based framework that defines generalized statistics for extended excitations in any dimension, yielding computable lattice unitary processes to detect nontrivial statistics. For example, we propose anyonic membrane statistics in (6+1)D, as well as fermionic membrane and volume statistics in arbitrary dimensions. We construct new families of $\mathbb Z_2$ topological orders: the fermionic-membrane toric code and the fermionic-volume toric code. In addition, we demonstrate that $p$-dimensional excitations in $2p+2$ spatial dimensions can support anyonic $p$-brane statistics for only even $p$.

Non-Abelian Self-Correcting Quantum Memory and Transversal Non-Clifford Gate beyond the $n^{1/3}$ Distance Barrier

We construct a family of infinitely many new candidate non-Abelian self-correcting topological quantum memories in $D\geq 5+1$ spacetime dimensions without particle excitations using local commuting non-Pauli stabilizer lattice models and field theories of $\mathbb{Z}_2^3$ higher-form gauge fields with nontrivial topological action. We call such non-Pauli stabilizer models magic stabilizer codes. The family of topological orders have Abelian electric excitations and non-Abelian magnetic excitations that obey Ising-like fusion rules and non-Abelian braiding, including Borromean ring type braiding which is a signature of non-Abelian topological order, generalizing the dihedral group $\mathbb{D}_8$ gauge theory in (2+1)D. The simplest example includes a new non-Abelian self-correcting memory in (5+1)D with Abelian loop excitations and non-Abelian membrane excitations. We prove the self-correction property and the thermal stability, and devise a probabilistic local cellular-automaton decoder. We also construct fault-tolerant non-Clifford CCZ logical gate using constant depth circuit from higher cup products in the 5D non-Abelian code. The use of higher-cup products and non-Pauli stabilizers allows us to get an $O(n^{2/5})$ distance overcoming the $O(n^{1/3})$ distance barrier in conventional topological stabilizer codes, including the 3D color code and the 6D self-correcting color code.

Projective Representations, Bogomolov Multiplier, and Their Applications in Physics

We present a pedagogical review of projective representations of finite groups and their physical applications in quantum many-body systems. Some of our physical results are new. We begin with a self-contained introduction to projective representations, highlighting the role of group cohomology, representation theory, and classification of irreducible projective representations. We then focus on a special subset of cohomology classes, known as the Bogomolov multiplier, which consists of cocycles that are symmetric on commuting pairs but remain nontrivial in group cohomology. Such cocycles have important physical implications: they characterize (1+1)D SPT phases that cannot be detected by string order parameters and give rise, upon gauging, to distinct gapped phases with completely broken non-invertible $\mathrm{Rep}(G)$ symmetry. We construct explicit lattice models for these phases and demonstrate how they are distinguished by the fusion rules of local order parameters. We show that a pair of completely broken $\mathrm{Rep}(G)$ SSB phases host nontrivial interface modes at their domain walls. As an example, we construct a lattice model where the ground state degeneracy on a ring increases from 32 without interfaces to 56 with interfaces.

Automorphism in Gauge Theories: Higher Symmetries and Transversal Non-Clifford Logical Gates

Gauge theories are important descriptions for many physical phenomena and systems in quantum computation. Automorphism of gauge group naturally gives global symmetries of gauge theories. In this work we study such symmetries in gauge theories induced by automorphisms of the gauge group, when the gauge theories have nontrivial topological actions in different spacetime dimensions. We discover the automorphism symmetry can be extended, become a higher group symmetry, and/or become a non-invertible symmetry. We illustrate the discussion with various models in field theory and on the lattice. In particular, we use automorphism symmetry to construct new transversal non-Clifford logical gates in topological quantum codes. In particular, we show that 2+1d $\mathbb{Z}_N$ qudit Clifford stabilizer models can implement non-Clifford transversal logical gate in the 4th level $\mathbb{Z}_N$ qudit Clifford hierarchy for $N\geq 3$, extending the generalized Bravyi-K\"onig bound proposed in the companion paper [arXiv:2511.02900] for qubits.

Higher-Form Anomalies Imply Intrinsic Long-Range Entanglement

We show that generic gapped quantum many-body states which respect an anomalous finite higher-form symmetry have an exponentially small overlap with any short-range entangled (SRE) state. Hence, anomalies of higher-form symmetries enforce $intrinsic$ long-range entanglement, which is in contrast with anomalies of ordinary (0-form) symmetries which are compatible with symmetric SRE states (specifically, symmetric cat states). As an application, we show that the anomalies of strong higher-form symmetries provide a diagnostic for mixed-state topological order in $d \geq 2$ spatial dimensions. We also identify a new (3+1)D intrinsic mixed-state topological order that does not obey remote-detectability by local decoherence of the (3+1)D Toric Code with fermionic loop excitations. This breakdown of remote detectability, as encoded in anomalies of strong higher-form symmetries, provides a partial characterization of intrinsically mixed-state topological order.

Anomalies of Coset Non-Invertible Symmetries

Anomalies of global symmetries provide important information on the quantum dynamics. We show the dynamical constraints can be organized into three classes: genuine anomalies, fractional topological responses, and integer responses that can be realized in symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. Coset symmetry can be present in many physical systems including quantum spin liquids, and the coset symmetry can be a non-invertible symmetry. We introduce twists in coset symmetries, which modify the fusion rules and the generalized Frobenius-Schur indicators. We call such coset symmetries twisted coset symmetries, and they are labeled by the quadruple $(G,K,ω_{D+1},α_D)$ in $D$ spacetime dimensions where $G$ is a group and $K\subset G$ is a discrete subgroup, $ω_{D+1}$ is a $(D+1)$-cocycle for group $G$, and $α_{D}$ is a $D$-cochain for group $K$. We present several examples with twisted coset symmetries using lattice models and field theory, including both gapped and gapless systems (such as gapless symmetry-protected topological phases). We investigate the anomalies of general twisted coset symmetry, which presents obstructions to realizing the coset symmetry in (gapped) symmetry-protected topological phases. We show that finite coset symmetry $G/K$ becomes anomalous when $G$ cannot be expressed as the bicrossed product $G=H\Join K$, and such anomalous coset symmetry leads to symmetry-enforced gaplessness in generic spacetime dimensions. We illustrate examples of anomalous coset symmetries with $A_5/\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, with realizations in lattice models.

Clifford Hierarchy Stabilizer Codes: Transversal Non-Clifford Gates and Magic

A fundamental problem in fault-tolerant quantum computation is the tradeoff between universality and dimensionality, exemplified by the the Bravyi-K\"onig bound for $n$-dimensional topological stabilizer codes. In this work, we extend topological Pauli stabilizer codes to a broad class of $n$-dimensional Clifford hierarchy stabilizer codes. These codes correspond to the $(n+1)$D Dijkgraaf-Witten gauge theories with non-Abelian topological order. We construct transversal non-Clifford gates through automorphism symmetries represented by cup products. In 2D, we obtain the first transversal non-Clifford logical gates including T and CS for Clifford stabilizer codes, using the automorphism of the twisted $\mathbb{Z}_2^3$ gauge theory (equivalent to $\mathbb{D}_4$ topological order). We also combine it with the just-in-time decoder to fault-tolerantly prepare the logical T magic state in $O(d)$ rounds via code switching. In 3D, we construct a transversal logical $\sqrt{\text{T}}$ gate in a non-Clifford stabilizer code at the third level of the Clifford hierarchy, located on a tetrahedron corresponding to a twisted $\mathbb{Z}_2^4$ gauge theory. Our constructions surpass the Bravyi-K\"onig bound by achieving the logical gates in the $(n+1)$-th level of Clifford hierarchy in $n$ spatial dimension.
