Knowing Ourselves Through Others: Reflecting with AI in Digital Human Debates

LLMs can act as an impartial other, drawing on vast knowledge, or as personalized self-reflecting user prompts. These personalized LLMs, or Digital Humans, occupy an intermediate position between self and other. This research explores the dynamic of self and other mediated by these Digital Humans. Using a Research Through Design approach, nine junior and senior high school students, working in teams, designed Digital Humans and had them debate. Each team built a unique Digital Human using prompt engineering and RAG, then observed their autonomous debates. Findings from generative AI literacy tests, interviews, and log analysis revealed that participants deepened their understanding of AI's capabilities. Furthermore, experiencing their own creations as others prompted a reflective attitude, enabling them to objectively view their own cognition and values. We propose "Reflecting with AI" - using AI to re-examine the self - as a new generative AI literacy, complementing the conventional understanding, applying, criticism and ethics.

See-Through Face Display: Enabling Gaze Communication for Any Face$\unicode{x2013}$Human or AI

We present See-Through Face Display, an eye-contact display system designed to enhance gaze awareness in both human-to-human and human-to-avatar communication. The system addresses the limitations of existing gaze correction methods by combining a transparent display with a strategically positioned camera. The display alternates rapidly between a visible and transparent state, thereby enabling the camera to capture clear images of the user's face from behind the display. This configuration allows for mutual gaze awareness among remote participants without the necessity of a large form factor or computationally resource-intensive image processing. In comparison to conventional methodologies, See-Through Face Display offers a number of practical advantages. The system requires minimal physical space, operates with low computational overhead, and avoids the visual artifacts typically associated with software-based gaze redirection. These features render the system suitable for a variety of applications, including multi-party teleconferencing and remote customer service. Furthermore, the alignment of the camera's field of view with the displayed face position facilitates more natural gaze-based interactions with AI avatars. This paper presents the implementation of See-Through Face Display and examines its potential applications, demonstrating how this compact eye-contact system can enhance gaze communication in both human-to-human and human-AI interactions.

Deep Billboards towards Lossless Real2Sim in Virtual Reality

An aspirational goal for virtual reality (VR) is to bring in a rich diversity of real world objects losslessly. Existing VR applications often convert objects into explicit 3D models with meshes or point clouds, which allow fast interactive rendering but also severely limit its quality and the types of supported objects, fundamentally upper-bounding the "realism" of VR. Inspired by the classic "billboards" technique in gaming, we develop Deep Billboards that model 3D objects implicitly using neural networks, where only 2D image is rendered at a time based on the user's viewing direction. Our system, connecting a commercial VR headset with a server running neural rendering, allows real-time high-resolution simulation of detailed rigid objects, hairy objects, actuated dynamic objects and more in an interactive VR world, drastically narrowing the existing real-to-simulation (real2sim) gap. Additionally, we augment Deep Billboards with physical interaction capability, adapting classic billboards from screen-based games to immersive VR. At our pavilion, the visitors can use our off-the-shelf setup for quickly capturing their favorite objects, and within minutes, experience them in an immersive and interactive VR world with minimal loss of reality.
