Giant anomalous Hall effect from spin-chirality scattering in a chiral magnet

The electrical Hall effect can be significantly enhanced through the interplay of the conduction electrons with magnetism, which is known as the anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Whereas the mechanism related to band topology has been intensively studied towards energy efficient electronics, those related to electron scattering have received limited attention. Here we report the observation of giant AHE of electron-scattering origin in a chiral magnet MnGe thin film. The Hall conductivity and Hall angle respectively reach 40,000 Ω-1cm-1 and 18 % in the ferromagnetic region, exceeding the conventional limits of AHE of intrinsic and extrinsic origins, respectively. A possible origin of the large AHE is attributed to a new type of skew-scattering via thermally-excited spin-clusters with scalar spin chirality, which is corroborated by the temperature-magnetic-field profile of the AHE being sensitive to the film-thickness or magneto-crystalline anisotropy. Our results may open up a new platform to explore giant AHE responses in various systems, including frustrated magnets and thin-film heterostructures.

Anisotropic Fully-Gapped Superconductivity Possibly Mediated by Charge Fluctuations in a Nondimeric Organic Complex

We investigate low-temperature electronic properties of the nondimeric organic superconductor $β^{\prime\prime}$-(BEDT-TTF)$_4$[(H$_3$O)Ga(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$]PhNO$_2$. By examining ultrasonic properties, charge disproportionation (CD) without magnetic field dependence is detected below $T_{\rm CD}$$\sim$8~K just above the superconducting critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$$\sim$6~K. From quantum oscillations in high fields, we find variation in the Fermi surface and mass enhancement induced by the CD. Heat capacity studies elucidate that the superconducting gap function is fully gapped in the Fermi surface, but anisotropic with fourfold symmetry. We point out that the pairing mechanism of the superconductivity is possibly dominated by charge fluctuations.

Quantized surface transport in topological Dirac semimetal films

Unconventional surface states protected by non-trivial bulk orders are sources of various exotic quantum transport in topological materials. One prominent example is the unique magnetic orbit, so-called Weyl orbit, in topological semimetals where two spatially separated surface Fermi-arcs are interconnected across the bulk. The recent observation of quantum Hall states in Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 bulks have drawn attention to the novel quantization phenomena possibly evolving from the Weyl orbit. Here we report surface quantum oscillation and its evolution into quantum Hall states in Cd3As2 thin film samples, where bulk dimensionality, Fermi energy, and band topology are systematically controlled. We reveal essential involvement of bulk states in the quantized surface transport and the resultant quantum Hall degeneracy depending on the bulk occupation. Our demonstration of surface transport controlled in film samples also paves a way for engineering Fermi-arc-mediated transport in topological semimetals.

Critical Slowing Down of Quadrupole and Hexadecapole Orderings in Iron Pnictide Superconductor

Ultrasonic measurements have been carried out to investigate the critical dynamics of structural and superconducting transitions due to degenerate orbital bands in iron pnictide compounds with the formula Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. The attenuation coefficient $α_{\mathrm{L}[110]}$ of the longitudinal ultrasonic wave for $(C_{11}+C_{12}+2C_{66})/2$ for $x = 0.036$ reveals the critical slowing down of the relaxation time around the structural transition at $T_\mathrm{s} = 65$ K, which is caused by ferro-type ordering of the quadrupole $O_{x'^2-y'^2}$ coupled to the strain $\varepsilon_{xy}$. The attenuation coefficient $α_{66}$ of the transverse ultrasonic wave for $C_{66}$ for $x = 0.071$ also exhibits the critical slowing down around the superconducting transition at $T_\mathrm{SC} = 23$ K, which is caused by ferro-type ordering of the hexadecapole $H_z^α\bigl( \boldsymbol{r}_i, \boldsymbol{r}_j \bigr) = O_{x'y'}\bigl( \boldsymbol{r}_i \bigr) O_{x'^2 - y'^2}\bigl( \boldsymbol{r}_j \bigr) + O_{x'^2 - y'^2}\bigl( \boldsymbol{r}_i \bigr) O_{x'y'}\bigl( \boldsymbol{r}_j \bigr)$ of the bound two-electron state coupled to the rotation $ω_{xy}$. It is proposed that the hexadecapole ordering associated with the superconductivity brings about spontaneous rotation of the macroscopic superconducting state with respect to the host tetragonal lattice.
