A Design Method of an Ultra-Wideband and Easy-to-Array Magic-T: A 6-14 GHz Scaled Model for a mm/submm Camera

We established a design method for a Magic-T with a single-layer dielectric/metal structure suitable for both wideband and multi-element applications for millimeter and submillimeter wave imaging observations. The design method was applied to a Magic-T with a coupled-line, stubs, and single-stage impedance transformers in a frequency-scaled model (6-14 GHz) that is relatively easy to demonstrate through manufacturing and evaluation. The major problem is that using the conventional perfect matching condition for a coupled-line alone produces an impractically large width coplanar coupled-line (CPCL) to satisfy the desired bandwidth ratio. In our study, by removing this constraint and optimizing impedances utilizing a circuit simulator with high computation speed, we found a solution with a $\sim$ 180 $\rm \mu$m wide CPCL, which is approximately an order of magnitude smaller than the conventional analytical solution. Furthermore, considering the effect of transition discontinuities in the transmission lines, we optimized the line length and obtained a design solution with return loss < -20 dB, amplitude imbalance < 0.1 dB, and phase imbalance < 0.5$^\circ$ from 6.1 GHz to 14.1 GHz.

Photoemission from the gas phase using soft x-ray fs pulses: An investigation of the space-charge effects

An experimental and computational investigation of the space-charge effects occurring in ultrafast photoelectron spectroscopy from the gas phase is presented. The target sample CF$_3$I is excited by ultrashort (100 fs) far-ultraviolet radiation pulses produced by a free-electron laser. The modification of the energy distribution of the photoelectrons, i.e. the shift and broadening of the spectral structures, is monitored as a function of the pulse intensity. The experimental results are compared with computational simulations which employ a Barnes-Hut algorithm to calculate the effect of individual Coulomb forces acting among the particles. In the presented model, a survey spectrum acquired at low radiation fluence is used to determine the initial energy distribution of the electrons after the photoemission event. The spectrum modified by the space-charge effects is then reproduced by $N$-body calculations that simulate the dynamics of the photoelectrons subject to the individual mutual Coulomb repulsion and to the attractive force of the positive ions. The employed numerical method accounts for the space-charge effects on the energy distribution and allows to reproduce the complete photoelectron spectrum and not just a specific photoemission structure. The simulations also provide information on the time evolution of the space-charge effects on the picosecond scale. Differences with the case of photoemission from solid samples are highlighted and discussed. The presented simulation procedure, although it omits the analysis of angular distribution, constitutes an effective simplified model that allows to predict and account for space-charge effects on the photoelectron energy spectrum in time-resolved photoemission experiments with high-intensity pulsed sources.

Microscopic Theory of $Γ_3$ Quadrupole Ordering in Pr Compounds on the Basis of a $j$-$j$ Coupling Scheme

Toward the understanding of incommensurate $Γ_3$ quadrupole ordering in PrPb$_3$, we develop a microscopic theory of multipole ordering in $f^2$-electron systems from an itinerant picture on the basis of a $j$-$j$ coupling scheme. For this purpose, we introduce the $Γ_7$-$Γ_8$ Hubbard model on a simple cubic lattice with the effective interactions that induce local $Γ_3$ states. By evaluating multipole susceptibility in a random phase approximation, we find that the hybridization between $Γ_7$ and $Γ_8$ orbitals plays a key role in the emergence of $Γ_3$ quadrupole ordering. We also emphasize that $Γ_3$ quadrupole ordering can be understood from the concept of {\it multipole nesting}, in which the Fermi surface region with large $Γ_8$ orbital density should be nested on the area with a significant $Γ_7$ component when the positions of the Fermi surfaces are shifted by the ordering vector. This concept cab be intuitively understood from the fact that local $Γ_3$ doublets are mainly composed of two singlets between $Γ_8$ and $Γ_7$ orbitals. Finally, we discuss the possible relevance of the present theory to the experimental results of PrPb$_3$ and point out some future problems in this direction of research.

Valence Imbalance of Manganese Ions between Surface and Bulk Enhanced by Fermi-Surface Structure in Layered Manganites

To investigate valence imbalance phenomena between the surface and bulk in layered manganites, we analyze an eg-orbital degenerate double-exchange model with surfaces for two types of t2g spin structures. We reconfirm that the surface-induced Friedel oscillations occur in the charged structure and that the number of Mn4+ ions on the surface is larger than that in the bulk. This tendency is found to be more significant, when the eg-electron system has Fermi-surface structures with better nesting properties. The behavior of the Friedel oscillations depends on the nesting properties of the Fermi-surface curves along the direction of the oscillations, and not on the dimension of the system itself. We believe that these results will be useful for the development of high-efficiency cathodes in Li-ion batteries and catalysts.

Quantum Interference of Surface-Induced Friedel Oscillations Enhanced by Fermi-Surface Nesting in Layered Manganites

Imbalance of Mn3+ and Mn4+ ions between surface and bulk in layered manganites is investigated on the basis of an orbital degenerate double-exchange model with surfaces. For two types of t2g spin structures, the number of Mn4+ ions on the surface is found to be larger than that in the bulk, explained by the surface-induced Friedel oscillation. In particular, for the sheet-type antiferromagnetic state, quantum beat phenomenon appears due to the interference among Friedel oscillations and the number of Mn4+ ions tends to increase on the surface. The present results are believed to be useful to develop high-efficient cathodes in Li-ion batteries and catalysts.
