Passive verification protocol for thermal graph states

Graph states are entangled resource states for universal measurement-based quantum computation. Although matter qubits such as superconducting circuits and trapped ions are promising candidates to generate graph states, it is technologically hard to entangle a large number of them due to several types of noise. Since they must be sufficiently cooled to maintain their quantum properties, thermal noise is one of major ones. In this paper, we show that for any temperature $T$, the fidelity $\langle G|ρ_T|G\rangle$ between an ideal graph state $|G\rangle$ at zero temperature and a thermal graph state $ρ_T$, which is a graph state at temperature $T$, can be efficiently estimated by using only one measurement setting. A remarkable property of our protocol is that it is passive, while existing protocols are active, namely they switch between at least two measurement settings. Since thermal noise is equivalent to an independent phase-flip error, our estimation protocol also works for that error. By generalizing our protocol to hypergraph states, we apply our protocol to the quantum-computational-supremacy demonstration with instantaneous quantum polynomial time circuits. Our results should make the characterization of entangled matter qubits extremely feasible under thermal noise.

Entanglement propagation in thermalization of an isolated quantum system

We study dynamics of entanglement in the thermalization process of an isolated quantum many-body system. We propose a simple setup for measuring the propagation speed of entanglement entropy (EE) in numerical simulations and apply it to the integrable/non-integrable spin models in 1D - the transverse Ising (TI) model, the chaotic Ising (CI) model, and the extended chaotic Ising (ECI) model. We find that two distinct time-scales $t^\ast$ and $t_{\rm {diff}}$ arise in the dynamics of EE in the thermalization process: the former represents the time-scale for the saturation of EE and the latter characterizes spreading of EE over the entire system. Evaluating the propagation speed of entanglement from $t_{\rm diff}$, we find that entanglement propagates ballistically with a constant velocity irrespective of the integrability of the model. The propagation speed of entanglement is found to coincide with the maximum group velocity of quasi-particle excitations in the TI model. We also evaluate the propagation speed of entanglement by mutual information and find the characteristic time-scale $t_{\mathrm{MI}}$. We show that the propagation speeds of entanglement evaluated by $t_{\mathrm{MI}}$ and $t_{\rm {diff}}$ agree well. We discuss the condition for thermalization based on the numerical results and propose that scrambling of the entire system has to take place before saturation of EE for thermalization.

Twisted kink crystal in holographic superconductor

Holographic superconductor model represents various inhomogeneous solutions with homogeneous sources. In this paper, we study inhomogeneous structures in the presence of the homogeneous current and the chemical potential. We find single complex kink condensates, multiple complex kinks condensates and twisted kink crystal condensates in which both the amplitude and the phase of the order parameter modulate in space. Analyzing the gauge-invariant phase difference in the single complex kink condensates, we find the non-monotonic behaviour with respect to the current. We confirm that the multiple complex kinks condensates and the twisted kink crystal condensates are well described by the analytic solutions obtained from the Gross-Neveu model or the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We also analyze the thermodynamic stability of the complex kink(s) condensates by computing the free energy. Our results imply that holographic superconductor model provides the boundary physics which is effectively represented by the Ginzburg-Landau theory with higher corrections.

Stability of supercurrents in a superfluid phase of spin-1 bosons in an optical lattice

We study collective modes and superfluidity of spin-1 bosons with antiferromagnetic interactions in an optical lattice based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation derived from the spin-1 Bose-Hubbard model. Specifically, we examine the stability of supercurrents in the polar phase in the vicinity of the Mott insulating phase with even filling factors. Solving the linearized TDGL equation, we obtain gapless spin-nematic modes and gapful spin-wave modes in the polar phase that arise due to the breaking of $S^2$ symmetry in spin space. Supercurrents exhibit dynamical instabilities induced by growing collective modes. In contrast to the second-order phase transition, the critical momentum of mass currents is finite at the phase boundary of the first-order superfluid-Mott insulator (SF-MI) phase transition. Furthermore, the critical momentum remains finite throughout the metastable SF phase and approaches zero towards the phase boundary, at which the metastable SF state disappears. We also study the stability of spin currents motivated by recent experiments for spinor gases. The critical momentum of spin currents is found to be zero, where a spin-nematic mode causes the dynamical instability. We investigate the origin of the zero critical momentum of spin currents and find it attributed to the fact that the polar state becomes energetically unstable even in the presence of an infinitesimal spin current. We discuss implications of the zero critical momentum of spin currents for the stability of the polar state.

Kink Crystalline Condensate and Multi-kink Solution in Holographic Superconductor

The theory of superconductivity can be divided into two groups depending on whether it has multi-kink solutions. For example, the BCS theory and the Gross-Neveu model have metastable multi-kink solutions whereas the conventional Ginzburg-Landau theory without higher-derivative interactions does not have any multi-kink solutions. In this paper, we systematically examine the solutions of the holographic superconductor model to find out which group the model falls into. We show that the holographic superconductor model has metastable multi-kink solutions. In this sense, we find that the holographic superconductor model falls into the category of the BCS theory and the Gross-Neveu model. We also find that the holographic superconductor model has kink crystalline condensates which are well-fitted by the Jacobi elliptic functions.

Ground state modulations in the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model

In this work we examine a system consisting of a confined one-dimensional arrangement of atoms that we describe by using the 2-dimensional ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model, restricted to an interval and at finite temperature. We develop a method to obtain the bulk and boundary parts of the one-loop effective action as a function of the effective mass of the fluctuations. The formalism has the advantage of allowing for a systematic analysis of a large class of boundary conditions and to model the (adiabatic) response of the ground state to changes in the boundary conditions. In the case of periodic boundary conditions, we find that inhomogeneous phases are disfavored for intervals of large size. Away from periodic boundary conditions, our numerical results show that the ground state has a generic crystal-like structure that can be modulated by variations of the boundary conditions. The results presented here could be relevant for experimental implementations of nonlinear sigma models and could be tested by lattice numerical simulations.

Casimir Force for the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ Model

In this work, we derive exact self-consistent solutions to the gap equations of the $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ model on a finite interval with Dirichlet boundary conditions in the large-$N$ approximation. The solution reproduce the confining phase in the infinite system by taking the appropriate limit. We compute the vacuum energy and the Casimir force and observe that the sign of the force is always attractive.

Nambu-Jona Lasinio and Nonlinear Sigma Models in Condensed Matter Systems

We review various connections between condensed matter systems with the Nambu-Jona Lasinio model and nonlinear sigma models. The field theoretical description of interacting systems offers a systematic framework to describe the dynamical generation of condensates. Resent findings of a duality between the Nambu-Jona Lasinio model and the nonlinear sigma model enables us to investigate various properties underlying both theories. In this review we mainly focus on inhomogeneous condensations in static situations. The various methods developed in the Nambu-Jona Lasinio model reveal the inhomogeneous phase structures and also yield new inhomogeneous solutions in the nonlinear sigma model owing to the duality. The recent progress on interacting systems in finite systems is also reviewed.

Hidden charge-conjugation, parity, and time-reversal symmetries and massive Goldstone (Higgs) modes in superconductors

A massive Goldstone (MG) mode, often referred to as a Higgs amplitude mode, is a collective excitation that arises in a system involving spontaneous breaking of a continuous symmetry, along with a gapless Nambu-Goldstone mode. It has been known in the previous studies that a pure amplitude MG mode emerges in superconductors if the dispersion of fermions exhibits the particle-hole (p-h) symmetry. However, clear understanding of the relation between the symmetry of the Hamiltonian and the MG modes has not been reached. Here we reveal the fundamental connection between the discrete symmetry of the Hamiltonian and the emergence of pure amplitude MG modes. To this end, we introduce nontrivial charge-conjugation ($\mathcal C$), parity ($\mathcal P$), and time-reversal ($\mathcal T$) operations that involve the swapping of pairs of wave vectors symmetrical with respect to the Fermi surface. The product of $\mathcal{CPT}$ (or its permutations) represents an exact symmetry analogous to the CPT theorem in the relativistic field theory. It is shown that a fermionic Hamiltonian with a p-h symmetric dispersion exhibits the discrete symmetries under $\mathcal C$, $\mathcal P$, $\mathcal T$, and $\mathcal{CPT}$. We find that in the superconducting ground state, $\mathcal T$ and $\mathcal P$ are spontaneously broken simultaneously with the U(1) symmetry. Moreover, we rigorously show that amplitude and phase fluctuations of the gap function are uncoupled due to the unbroken $\mathcal C$. In the normal phase, the MG and NG modes become degenerate, and they have opposite parity under $\mathcal T$. Therefore, we conclude that the lifting of the degeneracy in the superconducting phase and the resulting emergence of the pure amplitude MG mode can be identified as a consequence of the the spontaneous breaking of $\mathcal T$ symmetry but not of $\mathcal P$ or U(1).

Confining solitons in the Higgs phase of ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model: Self-consistent exact solutions in large-$N$ limit

The quantum ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model is in the confining (or unbroken) phase with a full mass gap in an infinite space, while it is in the Higgs (broken or deconfinement) phase accompanied with Nambu-Goldstone modes in a finite space such as a ring or finite interval smaller than a certain critical size. We find a new self-consistent exact solution describing a soliton in the Higgs phase of the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model in the large-$N$ limit on a ring. We call it a confining soliton. We show that all eigenmodes have real and positive energy and thus it is stable.

Self-Consistent Large-$N$ Analytical Solutions of Inhomogneous Condensates in Quantum ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ Model

We give, for the first time, self-consistent large-$N$ analytical solutions of inhomogeneous condensates in the quantum ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model in the large-$N$ limit. We find a map from a set of gap equations of the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model to those of the Gross-Neveu (GN) model (or the gap equation and the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation), which enables us to find the self-consistent solutions. We find that the Higgs field of the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model is given as a zero mode of solutions of the GN model, and consequently only topologically nontrivial solutions of the GN model yield nontrivial solutions of the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model. A stable single soliton is constructed from an anti-kink of the GN model and has a broken (Higgs) phase inside its core,in which ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ modes are localized, with a symmetric (confining) phase outside. We further find a stable periodic soliton lattice constructed from a real kink crystal in the GN model, while the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur hierarchy yields multiple solitons at arbitrary separations.

Sign Flip in the Casimir Force for Interacting Fermion Systems

In this work we consider a fermionic chain of finite length $\ell$. Fermions are allowed to interact and are forced to obey boundary conditions, thus altering the process of condensation. Our goal is to explore how this affects the quantum vacuum energy for this system. We approach this problem by using a self-consistent method and observe a nontrivial behavior in the Casimir force, displaying a switch from an attractive to a repulsive regime. This flip stems from the competition between the attractive contribution from the usual fermionic Casimir effect and a repulsive one coming from the condensate.

Out-of-time-order correlators in quantum mechanics

The out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) is considered as a measure of quantum chaos. We formulate how to calculate the OTOC for quantum mechanics with a general Hamiltonian. We demonstrate explicit calculations of OTOCs for a harmonic oscillator, a particle in a one-dimensional box, a circle billiard and stadium billiards. For the first two cases, OTOCs are periodic in time because of their commensurable energy spectra. For the circle and stadium billiards, they are not recursive but saturate to constant values which are linear in temperature. Although the stadium billiard is a typical example of the classical chaos, an expected exponential growth of the OTOC is not found. We also discuss the classical limit of the OTOC. Analysis of a time evolution of a wavepacket in a box shows that the OTOC can deviate from its classical value at a time much earlier than the Ehrenfest time.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states in a superconducting ring with magnetic fields: Phase diagram and the first-order phase transitions

We find the angular Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states (or the twisted kink crystals) in which a phase and an amplitude of a pair potential modulate simultaneously in a quasi-onedimensional superconducting ring with a static Zeeman magnetic field applied on the ring and static Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux penetrating the ring. The superconducting ring with magnetic flux produces a persistent current, whereas the Zeeman split of Fermi energy results in the spatial modulation of the pair potential. We show that these two magnetic fields stabilize the FFLO phase in a large parameter region of the magnetic fields. We further draw the phase diagram with the two kinds of first-order phase transitions; one corresponds to phase slips separating the Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux, and the other separates the number of peaks of the pair amplitude for the Zeeman magnetic field.

Analytical expression of geometrical pumping for a quantum dot based on quantum master equation

We analytically investigate a non-equilibrium quantum pumping for a single quantum dot connected to external leads on the basis of the quantum master equation (QME). We show that the Coulomb interaction associated with the spin effect in the dot induces the Berry-like phase in the parameter space and this phase results in the excess charge transfer for the cyclic modulation of parameters in leads. We obtain an analytical expression of the curvature of the phase and that for the pumped currents.

Interaction effects in Aharonov-Bohm-Kondo Rings

We study the conductance through an Aharonov-Bohm ring, containing a quantum dot in the Kondo regime in one arm, at finite temperature and arbitrary electronic density. We develop a general method for this calculation based on changing basis to the screening and non-screening channels. We show that an unusual term appears in the conductance, involving the connected 4-point Green's function of the conduction electrons. However, this term and terms quadratic in the ${\rm T}$-matrix can be eliminated at sufficiently low temperatures, leading to an expression for the conductance linear in the Kondo T-matrix. Explicit results are given for temperatures high compared to the Kondo temperature.

Geometrical pumping in spin coupled double quantum dots

We analytically investigate the non-equilibrium pumping for a double quantum dots system on the basis of the quantum master equation (QME), where the double quantum dots are connected to two external leads by the spin coupling. Each of leads has two tunable parameters, temperature and chemical potential. Using QME formalism, we obtain an analytical expression of the Berry-like phase for eigenstate of the QME in the parameter space. We show that the Berry-like curvature is non zero in the whole region in the parameter space. We also show that the Berry-like curvature vanishes in the case of single quantum dot and the case of isolated two dots.
