WaveNet-Style Guitar Amplifier Model Pruning for Real-Time iOS Deployment

WaveNet-style convolutional networks emulate tube amplifiers and distortion pedals with high fidelity, but their computational cost has confined them to desktops or dedicated DSP hardware. We present a sparse-enabled WaveNet inference engine for iOS that runs heavily pruned neural guitar amplifier models in real time on iPhones. Aggressive iterative magnitude pruning removes 90% of the network weights with no perceptible loss in quality. A custom sparse C++ engine turns this sparsity directly into compute savings, sustaining low-latency real-time operation on a CPU-only iPhone implementation where the dense model cannot. On-device output matches the trained model to within int16 quantization error. At the demonstration, visitors will play a guitar through the app on iPhone hardware and A/B the on-device pruned model against the physical pedal it emulates. Aliasing Reduction in Neural Amp Modeling by Smoothing Activations

The increasing demand for high-quality digital emulations of analog audio hardware, such as vintage tube guitar amplifiers, led to numerous works on neural network-based black-box modeling, with deep learning architectures like WaveNet showing promising results. However, a key limitation in all of these models was the aliasing artifacts stemming from nonlinear activation functions in neural networks. In this paper, we investigated novel and modified activation functions aimed at mitigating aliasing within neural amplifier models. Supporting this, we introduced a novel metric, the Aliasing-to-Signal Ratio (ASR), which quantitatively assesses the level of aliasing with high accuracy. Measuring also the conventional Error-to-Signal Ratio (ESR), we conducted studies on a range of preexisting and modern activation functions with varying stretch factors. Our findings confirmed that activation functions with smoother curves tend to achieve lower ASR values, indicating a noticeable reduction in aliasing. Notably, this improvement in aliasing reduction was achievable without a substantial increase in ESR, demonstrating the potential for high modeling accuracy with reduced aliasing in neural amp models.

Decay of Kaluza-Klein Vacuum via Singular Instanton

In the decay process of metastable vacua in quantum field theories, the bounce solution, a classical solution in Euclideanized theories, is helpful in calculating the decay rate. Recently, the bounce solution with a conical singularity has attracted wide attention and revealed physical importance. In this paper, we discuss the bubble of nothing solution, which describes the decay process of a five-dimensional Kaluza-Klein vacuum, and study the consequence of including conical singularity. We found that the bounce solution with singularities has a higher decay rate than those without. This effect suggests that a singular solution can play a dominant role in vacuum decay of theories with compact internal space. We also discuss the enhanced decay rate from a thermodynamic perspective.

Size-controlled quantum dots reveal the impact of intraband transitions on high-order harmonic generation in solids

Since the discovery of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in solids, much effort has been devoted to understanding its generation mechanism and both interband and intraband transitions are known to be essential. However, intraband transitions are affected by the electronic structure of a solid, and how they contribute to nonlinear carrier generation and HHG remains an open question. Here, we use mid-infrared laser pulses to study HHG in CdSe and CdS quantum dots (QDs), where quantum confinement can be used to control the intraband transitions. We find that both the HHG intensity per excited volume and the generated carrier density increase when the average QD size is increased from about 2 nm to 3 nm. We show that the reduction of the subband gap energy in larger QDs enhances intraband transitions, and this in turn increases the rate of photocarrier injection by coupling with interband transitions, resulting in enhanced HHG.

Periodic Anderson model with degenerate orbitals: linearized dynamical mean field theory approach

We investigate a multi-orbital extension of the periodic Anderson model with particular emphasis on electron correlations including orbital fluctuations. By means of a linearized version of the dynamical mean-field theory, we compute the renormalization factor, the density of states, the spectral gap and the local correlation functions for a given set of the intra- and inter-orbital Coulomb interactions as well as the Hund coupling. It is found that when a certain condition is met for the intra- and inter-orbital interactions for $f$ electrons, orbital fluctuations are enhanced, thereby enlarging the Kondo insulating gap. This effect is suppressed in the presence of the Hund coupling. We also clarify how the Kondo insulator is continuously changed to the Mott insulator when electron correlations among conduction electrons are increased.
