First-principles structural optimization and electronic structure of the superconductor picene for various potassium doping levels

We theoretically explore the crystal structures of K$_x$picene, for which a new aromatic superconductivity has recently been discovered for $x=3$, by systematically performing first-principles full structural optimization covering the concentration range $x=1$-4. The crystal symmetry (space group) of the pristine picene is shown to be preserved in all the optimized structures despite significant deformations of each picene molecule and vast rearrangements of herringbone array of molecules. For K$_x$picene ($x=1$-4) optimization indicates that (i) multiple structures exist in some cases, and (ii) dopants can enter not only in the interlayer region between the stack of herringbone structures, but also in the intralayer region. In the electronic structure obtained with the local density approximation for the optimized structures, the dopants are shown to affect the electronic properties not only through the rearrangement and distortion of molecules, but also molecule-metal atom hybridization. In other words, the rigid-band approximation is invalidated for multifold reasons. As a consequence the resultant Fermi surface exhibits a variety of multiband structures which take diverse topology for K$_1$picene and K$_3$picene.

Electronic structure of solid coronene: differences and commonalities to picene

We have obtained the first-principles electronic structure of solid coronene, which has been recently discovered to exhibit superconductivity with potassium doping. Since coronene, along with picene, the first aromatic superconductor, now provide a class of superconductors as solids of aromatic compounds, here we compare the two cases in examining the electronic structures. In the undoped coronene crystal, where the molecules are arranged in a herringbone structure with two molecules in a unit cell, the conduction band above an insulating gap is found to comprise four bands, which basically originate from the lowest two unoccupied molecular orbitals (doubly-degenerate, reflecting the high symmetry of the molecular shape) in an isolated molecule but the bands are entangled as in solid picene. The Fermi surface for a candidate of the structure of K$_x$coronene with $x=3$, for which superconductivity is found, comprises multiple sheets, as in doped picene but exhibiting a larger anisotropy with different topology.

Spin-density functional study of the organic polymer dimethylaminopyrrole: A realization of the organic periodic Anderson model

While the periodic Anderson model (PAM) has been recognized as a good model for various heavy f-electron systems, here we design a purely organic polymer whose low-energy physics can be captured by PAM. By means of the spin density functional calculation, we show that polymer of dimethylaminopyrrole is a candidate, where its ground state can indeed be magnetic depending on the doping. We discuss the factors favoring ferromagnetic ground state.

First-principles calculation of transition-metal impurities in LaFeAsO

We present a systematic ab initio study based on density-functional calculations to understand impurity effects in iron-based superconductors. Effective tight-binding Hamiltonians for the d-bands of LaFeAsO with various transition-metal impurities such as Mn, Co, Ni, Zn, and Ru are constructed using maximally-localized Wannier orbitals. Local electronic structures around the impurity are quantitatively characterized by their onsite potential and transfer hoppings to neighboring sites. We found that the impurities are classified into three groups according to the derived parameters: For Mn, Co, and Ni, their impurity-3d levels measured from the Fe-3d level are nearly 0.3 eV, -0.3 eV, and -0.8 eV, respectively, while, for the Zn case, the d level is considerably deep as -8 eV. For the Ru case, although the onsite-level difference is much smaller as O(0.1) eV, the transfer integrals around the impurity site are larger than those of the pure system by 20% \sim 30%, due to the large spatial spread of the Ru-4d orbitals. We also show that, while excess carriers are tightly trapped around the impurity site (due to the Friedel sum rule), there is a rigid shift of band structure near the Fermi level, which has the same effect as carrier doping.

Two-Orbital Model Explains the Higher Transition Temperature of the Single-Layer Hg-Cuprate Superconductor Compared to That of the La-Cuprate Superconductor

In order to explore the reason why the single-layered cuprates, La$_{2-x}$(Sr/Ba)$_x$CuO$_4$ ($T_c\simeq$ 40K) and HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ ($T_c\simeq$ 90K), have such a significant difference in $T_c$, we study a two-orbital model that incorporates the $d_{z^2}$ orbital on top of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital. It is found, with the fluctuation exchange approximation, that the $d_{z^2}$ orbital contribution to the Fermi surface, which is stronger in the La system, works against d-wave superconductivity, thereby dominating over the effect of the Fermi surface shape. The result resolves the long-standing contradiction between the theoretical results on Hubbard-type models and the experimental material dependence of $T_c$ in the cuprates.

Doping dependence of spin fluctuations and electron correlations in iron pnictides

Doping dependence of the spin fluctuations and the electron correlations in the effective five-band Hubbard model for iron pnictides is investigated using the fluctuation-exchange approximation. For a moderate hole doping, we find a dominant low-energy spin excitation at Q=(π,0), which becomes critical at low temperature. The low-energy spin excitations in the heavily hole-doped region are characterized by weak Q dependence. The electron doping leads to an appearance of a pseudogap in spin excitation spectrum. Correspondingly, the NMR-1/T1 relaxation rate is strongly enhanced on the hole-doped side and suppressed on the electron-doped side of the phase diagram. This behavior can be to large extent understood by systematic changes of the Fermi-surface topology.

Comparison of Ab initio Low-Energy Models for LaFePO, LaFeAsO, BaFe2As2, LiFeAs, FeSe and FeTe: Electron Correlation and Covalency

Effective low-energy Hamiltonians for several different families of iron-based superconductors are compared after deriving them from the downfolding scheme based on first-principles calculations. Systematic dependences of the derived model parameters on the families are elucidated, many of which are understood from the systematic variation of the covalency between Fe-3d and pnictogen-/chalcogen-p orbitals.

Phase diagram and Gap anisotropy in Iron-Pnictide Superconductors

Using the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation we study an effective five-band Hubbard model for iron-pnictide superconductors obtained from the first-principles band structure. We preclude deformations of the Fermi surface due to electronic correlations by introducing a static potential, which mimics the effect of charge relaxation. Evaluating the Eliashberg equation for various dopings and interaction parameters, we find that superconductivity can sustain higher hole than electron doping. Analyzing the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter we observe clear differences between the hole and electron doped systems. We discuss the importance of the pnictogen height for superconductivity. Finally, we dissect the pairing interaction into various contributions, which allows us to clarify the relationship between the superconducting transition temperature and the proximity to the anti-ferromagnetic phase.

First-Principles Electronic Structure of Solid Picene

To explore the electronic structure of the first aromatic superconductor, potassium-doped solid picene which has been recently discovered by Mitsuhashi et al with the transition temperatures $T_c=7 - 20$ K, we have obtained a first-principles electronic structure of solid picene as a first step toward the elucidation of the mechanism of the superconductivity. The undoped crystal is found to have four conduction bands, which are characterized in terms of the maximally localized Wannier orbitals. We have revealed how the band structure reflects the stacked arrangement of molecular orbitals for both undoped and doped (K$_3$picene) cases, where the bands are not rigid. The Fermi surface for K$_3$picene is a curious composite of a warped two-dimensional surface and a three-dimensional one.

Spin density functional study on magnetism of potassium loaded Zeolite A

In order to clarify the mechanism of spin polarization in potassium-loaded zeolite A, we perform {\em ab initio} density-functional calculations. We find that (i) the system comprising only non-magnetic elements (Al, Si, O and K) can indeed exhibit ferromagnetism, (ii) while the host cage makes a confining quantum-well potential in which $s$- and $p$-like states are formed, the potassium-4$s$ electrons accommodated in the p-states are responsible for the spin polarization, and (iii) the size of the magnetic moment sensitively depends on the atomic configuration of the potassium atoms. We show that the spin polarization can be described systematically in terms of the confining potential and the crystal field splitting of the p-states.

Is Fermi-surface nesting the origin of superconductivity in iron pnictides?: A fluctuation-exchange-approximation study

We study whether Fermi-surface (FS) nesting can give rise to high-temperature superconductivity in iron pnictides. Starting with ab initio construction of an effective four-orbital model, we employ the fluctuation-exchange approximation to show that FS does not necessarily favor the stripe antiferromagnetic order observed in experiments, especially for realistic electronic correlations. If superconductivity in iron pnictides is magnetically mediated and has fully-gapped sign-reversing s-wave symmetry, our results suggest that the pairing interaction does not arise only from FS nesting and exchange interactions between local moments in the Fe 3d orbitals may play a crucial role.

The local atomic structure of superconducting Fe-Se-Te

We report on the first local atomic structure study via the pair density function (PDF) analysis of neutron diffraction data and show a direct correlation of local coordinates to TC in the newly discovered superconducting FeSe1-xTex. The isovalent substitution of Te for Se such as in FeSe0.5Te0.5 increases Tc by twofold in comparison to a-FeSe without changing the carrier concentration but, on average, decreases the chalcogen-Fe bond angle. However, we find that the local symmetry is lower than the average P4/nmm crystal symmetry, because the Se and Te ions do not share the same site, leading to two distinct z-coordinates that exhibit two types of bond angles with Fe. The angle indeed increases from ~ 104.02o in FeSe to ~105.20o in FeSe0.5Te0.5 between Fe and Se. Simultaneously, ab-initio calculations based on spin density function theory yielded an optimized structure with distinct z-coordinates for Se and Te, in agreement with the experiment. The valence charge distribution in the Fe-Se bonds was found to be different from that in the Fe-Te bonds. Thus, superconductivity in this chalcogenide is closely related to the local structural environment, with direct implications on the multiband magnetism where modulations of the ionic lattice can change the distribution of valence electrons.

Ab initio Derivation of Low-Energy Model for Alkali-Cluster-Loaded Sodalites

An effective low-energy model describing magnetic properties of alkali-cluster-loaded sodalites is derived by {\em ab initio} downfolding. We start with constructing an extended Hubbard model for maximally localized Wannier functions. {\em Ab initio} screened Coulomb and exchange interactions are calculated by constrained random phase approximation. We find that the system resides in the strong coupling regime and thus the Heisenberg model is derived as a low-energy model of the extended Hubbard model. We obtain antiferromagnetic couplings $\sim$ $O$(10 K), being consistent with the experimental temperature dependence of the spin susceptibility. Importance of considering the screening effect in the derivation of the extended Hubbard model is discussed.

Pnictogen height as a possible switch between high-T_c nodeless and low-T_c nodal pairings in the iron based superconductors

We study the effect of the lattice structure on the spin-fluctuation mediated superconductivity in the iron pnictides adopting the five-band models of several virtual lattice structures of LaFeAsO as well as actual materials such as NdFeAsO and LaFePO obtained from the maximally-localized Wannier orbitals. Random phase approximation is applied to the models to solve the Eliashberg equation. This reveals that the gap function and the strength of the superconducting instability are determined by the cooperation or competition among multiple spin fluctuation modes arising from several nestings among disconnected pieces of the Fermi surface, which is affected by the lattice structure. Specifically, the appearance of the Fermi surface $γ$ around $(π,π)$ in the unfolded Brillouin zone is sensitive to the pnictogen height $h_{\rm Pn}$ measured from the Fe plane, where $h_{\rm Pn}$ is shown to act as a switch between high-$T_c$ nodeless and low-$T_c$ nodal pairings. We also find that reduction of the lattice constants generally suppresses superconductivity. We can then combine these to obtain a generic superconducting phase diagram against the pnictogen height and lattice constant. This suggests that NdFeAsO is expected to exhibit a fully-gapped, sign-reversing s-wave superconductivity with a higher $T_c$ than in LaFeAsO, while a nodal pairing with a low $T_c$ is expected for LaFePO, which is consistent with experiments.

Three-dimensional electronic structure of superconducting iron pnictides observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the undoped and electron-doped iron pnictides BaFe2\_{-x}CoxAs2 (Ba122) (x=0, 0.14) and studied the Fermi surfaces (FSs) and band dispersions near the Fermi level. The FS sheets we observed are consistent with the shrinkage of the hole-like pockets around the Brillouin Zone (BZ) center and the expansion of the electron pockets around the BZ corner in the electron-doped compound as compared to the undoped parent compound. Band dispersions and FSs around the BZ center strongly depend on the photon energy, indicating the three-dimensional (3D) electronic structure. This observation suggests that the antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in the pnictides may have to be considered including the orbital-dependent 3D electronic structure, where FS nesting is not necessarily strong.

Ab initio Derivation of Low-Energy Model for $κ$-ET Type Organic Conductors

We derive effective Hubbard-type Hamiltonians of $κ$-(ET)$_2X$, using an {\em ab initio} downfolding technique, for the first time for organic conductors. They contain dispersions of the highest occupied Wannier-type molecular orbitals with the nearest neighbor transfer $t$$\sim$0.067 eV for a metal $X$=Cu(NCS)$_2$ and 0.055 eV for a Mott insulator $X$=Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, as well as screened Coulomb interactions. It shows unexpected differences from the conventional extended Hückel results, especially much stronger onsite interaction $U$$\sim$0.8 eV ($U/t$$\sim$12-15) than the Hückel estimates ($U/t$$\sim$7-8) as well as an appreciable longer-ranged interaction. Reexamination on physics of this family of materials is required from this realistic basis.

Combined approach of density functional theory and quantum Monte Carlo method to electron correlation in dilute magnetic semiconductors

We present a realistic study for electronic and magnetic properties in dilute magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As. A multi-orbital Haldane-Anderson model parameterized by density-functional calculations is presented and solved with the Hirsch-Fye quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. Results well reproduce experimental results in the dilute limit. When the chemical potential is located between the top of the valence band and an impurity bound state, a long-range ferromagnetic correlations between the impurities, mediated by antiferromagnetic impurity-host couplings, are drastically developed. We observe an anisotropic character in local density of states at the impurity-bound-state energy, which is consistent with the STM measurements. The presented combined approach thus offers a firm starting point for realistic calculations of the various family of dilute magnetic semiconductors.
