Feasibility demonstration of a high-momentum, high-purity muon beamline at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility

We have established and characterized a novel high-purity muon beam delivery scheme, designated as $μ$20, at the high-momentum hadron beamline (B-line) of the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. This scheme delivers tertiary muons produced via the in-flight backward decays of secondary pions in the straight section of the beamline, inherently suppressing parent hadron contamination. In a systematic performance evaluation, the muon beam achieved a standalone intensity of $1.7\times10{^3}$ particles/spill with a spatial spread (standard deviation, $σ$) of approximately 15 mm at the downstream detector position. A systematic attenuation analysis utilizing an iron absorber verified a high muon purity of 98.0$\pm$0.6% for the 3 GeV/$c$ muon beam mode. Crucially, this work marks the first successful feasibility study of a high-momentum and high-purity muon beamline operation at an experimental facility in Japan.

Hit-rate capability of a silicon strip detector module for decay positron detection in the J-PARC muon $g-2$/EDM experiment

In the J-PARC muon $g-2$/EDM experiment, a silicon strip detector will be used to detect positrons from muon decays. The detector consists of planes of detector modules arranged radially. The expected maximum hit rate reaches 1.4~MHz per sensor strip, and achieving high detection efficiency even under such hit-rate conditions is a key performance requirement. We have developed the smallest unit of the detector module, and its performance was evaluated using a muon beam at the J-PARC MLF H-line. The specifications of the detector module and the evaluated hit-rate capability are described in this article.

First measurement of $ϕ$ meson production in 30 GeV proton-nucleus reactions via di-electron decay at J-PARC

We present the first measurement of the production of the $ϕ$ meson in 30 GeV proton-nucleus interactions on carbon and copper targets via the di-electron decay channel. The measurement was conducted at the high-momentum beamline of the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility, which was commissioned in 2020. The $e^+e^-$ pairs were detected using the E16 spectrometer, during a commissioning run of the J-PARC E16 experiment. The $ϕ$ mesons are successfully reconstructed on all experimental targets. The obtained yields are converted to the total production cross section, assuming a kinematical distribution of the event generator JAM. The total cross sections derived are 2.0 $\pm$ 0.9 (stat.) $\pm$ 1.0 (syst.) mb on the carbon target and 10.3 $\pm$ 4.4 (stat.) $\pm$ 4.4 (syst.) mb on the copper target. The mass-number dependence of the cross section is discussed using the parameter $α$, defined as $σ\propto A^α$, resulting in $α= $ 0.99 $\pm$ 0.38 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.34 (syst.). The extrapolation to $A=1$, which means that the cross section of proton-proton reactions, is in good agreement with the existing measurements at comparable energies.

Extension of the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility: Third White Paper

The J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility was constructed with an aim to explore the origin and evolution of matter in the universe through the experiments with intense particle beams. In the past decade, many results on particle and nuclear physics have been obtained at the present facility. To expand the physics programs to unexplored regions never achieved, the extension project of the Hadron Experimental Facility has been extensively discussed. This white paper presents the physics of the extension of the Hadron Experimental Facility for resolving the issues in the fields of the strangeness nuclear physics, hadron physics, and flavor physics.

Data acquisition system in Run-0a for the J-PARC E16 experiment

J-PARC E16 is an experiment to examine the origin of hadron mass through a systematic measurement of spectral changes of vector mesons in nuclei. The measurement of $e^{+}e^{-}$ pairs from the decay of vector mesons will provide the information of the partial restoration of the chiral symmetry in a normal nuclear density. To resolve a pulse pile-up and achieve good discrimination of $e^{\pm}$ from the background of a reaction rate of an order of 10 MHz, the data acquisition (DAQ) system uses waveform sampling chips of APV25 and DRS4. The trigger rate and data rate are expected to be 1 kHz and 130--330 MiB/s, respectively. The DAQ system for readout of APV25 and DRS4 were developed, where events were synchronized by common trigger and tag data. The first commissioning in beam, called Run-0a, was performed in June 2020 with about 1/4 of the designed setup. The DAQ worked with a trigger rate of 300 Hz in the Run-0a and the main bottleneck was a large data size of APV25. Further optimization of the DAQ system will improve the performance.

Repulsion and absorption of the $Σ$-nucleus potential for $Σ^-$-$^5$He in the $^6$Li($π^-$, $K^+$) reaction

We study phenomenologically inclusive spectra of the $^6$Li($π^-$, $K^+$) reaction at 1.2 GeV/$c$ within a distorted-wave impulse approximation with the optimal Fermi-averaging $π^- p \to K^+ Σ^-$ $t$ matrix. We attempt to clarify the property of a $Σ$-nucleus potential for $Σ^-$-$^5$He by comparing the calculated spectra with the data of the J-PARC E10 experiment. The result shows that the repulsive and absorptive components of the $Σ^-$-$^5$He potential provide the ability to explain the data of the continuum spectra in $Σ$ and $Λ$ regions; the strengths of $V_Σ\simeq$ +30 MeV and $W_Σ\simeq$ $-$26 MeV are favored within the Woods-Saxon potential, consistent with analyses for heavier nuclei. Effects of the size and potential range for $Σ^-$-$^5$He in the neutron excess of $(N-Z)/(N+Z)=$ 0.2 are also discussed.

Observation of the "$K^-pp$"-like structure in the $d(π^+, K^+)$ reaction at 1.69 GeV/$c$

We have observed a "$K^-pp$"-like structure in the $d(π^+,K^+)$ reaction at 1.69 GeV/$c$. In this reaction $Λ(1405)$ hyperon resonance is expected to be produced as a doorway to form the $K^-pp$ through the $Λ^*p\rightarrow K^-pp$ process. However, most of the produced $Λ(1405)$'s would escape from deuteron without secondary reactions. Therefore, coincidence of high-momentum ($>$ 250~MeV/$c$) proton(s) in large emission angles ($39^\circ<θ_{lab.}<122^\circ$) was requested to enhance the signal-to-background ratio. A broad enhancement in the proton coincidence spectra are observed around the missing-mass of 2.27 GeV/$c^2$, which corresponds to the $K^-pp$ binding energy of 95 $^{+18}_{-17}$ (stat.) $^{+30}_{-21}$ (syst.) MeV and the width of 162 $^{+87}_{-45}$ (stat.) $^{+66}_{-78}$ (syst.) MeV.

Inclusive spectrum of the $d(π^+, K^+)$ reaction at 1.69 GeV/c

We have measured an inclusive missing-mass spectrum of the $d(π^+, K^+)$ reaction at the pion incident momentum of 1.69 GeV/$c$ at the laboratory scattering angles between 2$^\circ$ and 16$^\circ$ with the missing-mass resolution of 2.7 $\pm$ 0.1 MeV/$c^2$ (FWHM) at the missing mass of 2.27 GeV/$c^{2}$. In this Letter, we first try to understand the spectrum as a simple quasi-free picture based on several known elementary cross sections, considering the neutron/proton Fermi motion in deuteron. While gross spectrum structures are well understood in this picture, we have observed two distinct deviations; one peculiar enhancement at 2.13 GeV/$c^2$ is due to the $ΣN$ cusp, and the other notable feature is a shift of a broad bump structure, mainly originating from hyperon resonance productions of $Λ(1405)$ and $Σ(1385)^{+/0}$, by about 22.4 $\pm$ 0.4 (stat.) $^{+2.7}_{-1.7}$ (syst.) MeV/$c^2$ toward the low-mass side, which is calculated in the kinematics of a proton at rest as the target.
