Structured Ytterbium and Erbium -doped Silica Fiber for Dual Wavelength Laser Operation

We report on a novel type of dual-wavelength fiber laser with a structured-core design inside silica glass, forming a spatial separation of the several core areas doped with ytterbium and erbium ions. We have optimised the key parameters of the fiber core, such as the concentration of rare earth elements, and the optimal length of active fiber to operate simultaneously at two different wavelengths. Using the Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition method to obtain initial optical fiber preforms, and using the stack and draw technique, we have fabricated two types of active fibers, one with 7 and one with 19 rare-earth-doped rods (elements) forming the fiber core. We characterized the drawn fibers by investigating their structure by scanning electron microscopy, confirming the spatial separation of the elements within the core. Measuring absorption shows that concentration ratios Nt Yb: Nt Er were approximately 52: 48 for 7 core fibers and 56:44 for 19 core fibers. Lifetimes for both active fibers were 0.84 ms for Yb3+ ion and 10.30 ms for Er3+ ion. The performance of fiber lasers was determined, proving that fibers are capable of laser emission simultaneously at 1042 nm and 1550 nm. We have shown experimentally that the output power ratio between both lasing wavelengths can be controlled by the length of the fiber.

Supercontinuum generation in a graded-index multimode tellurite fiber

We report a near two-octave spanning supercontinuum (SC) from 790 nm to 2900 nm in a nanostructured tellurite graded-index multimode fiber with a nanostructured core. We study the SC dynamics in different dispersion regimes and observe near-single mode spatial intensity distribution at high input energy values. Numerical simulations of the (3+1)D generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation are in good agreement with our experiments. Our results open a new avenue for the generation of high-power mid-infrared SC sources in soft glass fibers.

Analysis of High-Contrast All-Optical Dual Wavelength Switching in Asymmetric Dual-Core Fibers

We systematically present experimental and theoretical results for the dual-wavelength switching of 1560 nm, 75 fs signal pulses (SPs) driven by 1030 nm, 270 fs control pulses (CPs) in a dual-core fiber (DCF). We demonstrate a switching contrast of 31.9 dB, corresponding to a propagation distance of 14 mm, achieved by launching temporally synchronized SP-CP pairs into the fast core of the DCF with moderate inter-core asymmetry. Our analysis employs a system of three coupled propagation equations to identify the compensation of the asymmetry by nonlinearity as the physical mechanism behind the efficient switching performance.

Two octave supercontinuum generation in a non-silica graded-index multimode fiber

The generation of a two-octave supercontinuum from the visible to mid-infrared (700 - 2800 nm) in a non-silica graded-index multimode fiber is reported. The fiber design is based on a nanostructured core comprised of two types of drawn lead-bismuth-gallate glass rods with different refractive indices. This structure yields an effective parabolic index profile, an extended transmission window, and ten times increased nonlinearity when compared to silica fibers. Using femtosecond pulse pumping at wavelengths in both normal and anomalous dispersion regimes, a detailed study is carried out into the supercontinuum generating mechanisms and instabilities seeded by periodic self imaging. Significantly, suitable injection conditions in the high power regime are found to result in the output beam profile showing clear signatures of beam self-cleaning from nonlinear mode mixing. Experimental observations are interpreted using spatio-temporal 3+1D numerical simulations of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and simulated spectra are in excellent agreement with experiment over the full two-octave spectral bandwidth. These results demonstrate a new pathway towards the generation of bright, ultrabroadband light sources in the mid-infrared.

Reversible ultrafast soliton switching in dual-core highly nonlinear optical fibers

We experimentally investigate a nonlinear switching mechanism in a dual-core highly nonlinear optical fiber. We focus the input beam of femtosecond pulses on one core only, to identify transitions between inter-core oscillations, self-trapping in the cross core, and self-trapping of the pulse in the straight core. A model based in the system of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations provides surprisingly good agreement with the experimental findings.
