Renormalization group analysis of Dirac fermions with random mass

Two-dimensional (2D) disordered superconductor (SC) in class D exhibits a disorder-induced quantum multicritical phenomenon among diffusive thermal metal (DTM), topological superconductor (TS), and conventional localized (AI) phases. To characterize the quantum tricritical point where these three phases meet, we carry out a two-loop renormalization group (RG) analysis for 2D Dirac fermion with random mass in terms of the $ε$-expansion in the spatial dimension $d=2-ε$. In 2D ($ε=0$), the random mass is marginally irrelevant around a clean-limit fixed point of the gapless Dirac fermion, while there exists an IR unstable fixed point at finite disorder strength that corresponds to the tricritical point. The critical exponent, dynamical exponent, and scaling dimension of the (uniform) mass term are evaluated around the tricritical point by the two-loop RG analysis. Using a mapping between an effective theory for the 2D random-mass Dirac fermion and the (1+1)-dimensional Gross-Neveu model, we further deduce the four-loop evaluation of the critical exponent, and the scaling dimension of the uniform mass around the tricritical point. Both the two-loop and four-loop results suggest that criticalities of a AI-DTM transition line as well as TS-DTM transition line are controlled by other saddle-point fixed point(s) at finite uniform mass.

Transfer matrix study of the Anderson transition in non-Hermitian systems

In this paper, we present in-depth transfer matrix analyses of the Anderson transition in three non-Hermitian (NH) systems, NH Anderson, U(1) and Peierls models, that belong to NH class AI$^{\dagger}$ or NH class A. We first argue a general validity of the transfer matrix analysis, and clarify the symmetry properties of the Lyapunov exponents, scattering ($S$) matrix and two-terminal conductance in these NH models. The unitarity of the $S$ matrix is violated in NH systems, where the two-terminal conductance can take arbitrarily large values. Nonetheless, we show that the transposition symmetry of a Hamiltonian leads to the symmetric nature of the $S$ matrix as well as the reciprocal symmetries of the Lyapunov exponents and conductance in certain ways in these NH models. Finite size scaling data are fitted by polynomial functions, from which we determine the critical exponent $ν$ at different single-particle energies and system parameters of the NH models. We conclude that the critical exponents of the NH class AI$^{\dagger}$ and the NH class A are $ν=1.19 \pm 0.01$ and $ν=1.00 \pm 0.04$, respectively. In the NH models, a distribution of the two-terminal conductance is not Gaussian. Instead, it contains small fractions of huge conductance values, which come from rare-event states with huge transmissions amplified by on-site NH disorders. Nonetheless, a geometric mean of the conductance enables the finite-size scaling analysis. We show that the critical exponents obtained from the conductance analysis are consistent with those from the localization length in these three NH models.

Universality classes of the Anderson transition in three-dimensional symmetry classes AIII, BDI, C, D and CI

We clarify universal critical properties of delocalization-localization transitions in three-dimensional (3D) unitary and orthogonal classes with particle-hole and/or chiral symmetries (classes AIII, BDI, D, C and CI). We first introduce tight-binding models on cubic lattice that belong to these five nonstandard symmetry classes respectively. Unlike the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian for superconductors, all the five models have finite areas of Fermi surfaces in the momentum space in the clean limit. Thereby, the scaling theory of the Anderson transition guarantees the presence of the delocalization-localization transitions at finite disorder strength in these models. Based on this expectation, we carry out extensive transfer matrix calculations of the Lyapunov exponents for zero-energy eigenstates of the disordered tight-binding models with quasi-one-dimensional geometry. Near the Anderson transition point, the correlation length diverges with a universal critical exponent $ν$. Using finite-size scaling analysis of the localization length, we determine the critical exponent of the transitions and scaling function of the (normalized) localization length in the three non-standard unitary symmetry classes: $ν_{\text{AIII}}=1.06\pm0.02$, $ν_{\text{D}}=0.87\pm0.03$, and $ν_{\text{C}}=0.996\pm0.012$. Our result of the class C is consistent with a previous study of classical network model [M. Ortuño et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 070603 (2009)]. The critical exponents of the two non-standard orthogonal classes are estimated as $ν_{\text{CI}}=1.17 \pm 0.02$ and $ν_{\text{BDI}}=1.12 \pm 0.06$. Our result of the class CI is consistent with another previous study of a lattice model, while the exponent of the class BDI is at variance with the previous evaluation of nodal Dirac ring model [X. L. Luo et al, Phys. Rev. B. 101, 020202(R) (2020)].

Universality classes of the Anderson Transitions Driven by non-Hermitian Disorder

An interplay between non-Hermiticity and disorder plays an important role in condensed matter physics. Here, we report the universal critical behaviors of the Anderson transitions driven by non-Hermitian disorders for three dimensional (3D) Anderson model and 3D U(1) model, which belong to 3D class ${\rm AI}^{\dagger}$ and 3D class A in the classification of non-Hermitian systems, respectively. Based on level statistics and finite-size scaling analysis, the critical exponent for length scale is estimated as $ν=0.99\pm 0.05$ for class ${\rm AI}^{\dagger}$, and $ν=1.09\pm 0.05 $ for class A, both of which are clearly distinct from the critical exponents for 3D orthogonal and 3D unitary classes, respectively. In addition, spectral rigidity, level spacing distribution, and level spacing ratio distribution are studied. These critical behaviors strongly support that the non-Hermiticity changes the universality classes of the Anderson transitions.

Fate of a multiple-band Fermi liquid that is coupled with critical $ϕ^4$ bosons

Multiple-band nature of electronic energy bands leads to novel physical effects in solids. In this paper, we clarify physical properties of a Fermi system with a pair of electron and hole Fermi surfaces (FSs), whose coupling is mediated by a critical U(1) boson field. By using a one-loop renormalization group analysis, we show that when the boson field undergoes a quantum phase transition with broken U(1) symmetry, the multiple-band Fermi system shows a non-Fermi liquid (non-FL) behaviour in its thermodynamic and magnetic properties. At a quantum critical point (QCP), Fermi velocities of the two FSs are renormalized into a same critical velocity as a boson velocity, and the fermion's density of states (DOS) shows a pseudo-gap behaviour with a logarithmic energy dependence at the QCP.

Berry curvature for coupled waves of magnons and electromagnetic waves

In this paper, we introduce Berry curvature, topological Chern number and topological chiral edge mode, that emerge from a hybridization between magnon and electromagnetic wave in a ferromagnet insulator. By focusing on the energy conservation, we first reformulate the Landau-Lifshitz-Maxwell equation into a Hermitian eigenvalue equation. From the eigenvalue equation, we define the Berry curvature of the magnon-photon coupled waves. We show that the Berry curvature thus introduced shows a prominent peak around a hybridization point between magnon mode and photon mode, and a massive hybrid mode takes a non-zero Chern number ($\pm 1$) due to the magnon-photon coupling. In accordance with the non-zero Chern number, the topological edge modes emerge inside the hybridization gap at a domain wall between two ferromagnetic insulators with opposite magnetizations.

Topological Boundary Modes from Translational Deformations

Localized states universally appear when a periodic potential is perturbed by defects or terminated at its surface. In this Letter, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a mechanism that generates localized states through continuous translational deformations of periodic potentials. We provide a rigorous proof of the emergence of the localized states under the deformations. The mechanism is experimentally verified in microwave photonic crystals. We also demonstrate topological phase windings of reflected waves for translated photonic crystals.

Critical Behaviors of Anderson Transitions in Three Dimensional Orthogonal Classes with Particle-hole Symmetries

From transfer-matrix calculation of localization lengths and their finite-size scaling analyses, we evaluate critical exponents of the Anderson metal-insulator transition in three dimensional (3D) orthogonal class with particle-hole symmetry, class CI, as $ν=1.16\pm 0.02$. We further study disorder-driven quantum phase transitions in the 3D nodal line Dirac semimetal model, which belongs to class BDI, and estimate critical exponent as $ν=0.80\pm 0.02$. From a comparison of the critical exponents, we conclude that a disorder-driven re-entrant insulator-metal transition from the topological insulator phase in the class BDI to the diffusive metal phase belongs to the same universality class as the Anderson transition in the 3D class BDI. We also argue that an infinitesimally small disorder drives the nodal line Dirac semimetal in the clean limit to the diffusive metal.

Ground-state atlas of a three-dimensional semimetal in the quantum limit

An interplay between electron correlation and reduced dimensionality due to the Landau quantization gives rise to exotic electronic phases in three-dimensional semimetals under high magnetic field. Using an unbiased theoretical method, we clarify for the first time comprehensive ground-state phase diagrams of a three-dimensional semimetal with a pair of electron and hole pockets in the quantum limit. For the electron interaction, we consider either screened Coulomb repulsive interaction or an attractive electron-electron interaction mediated by a screened electron-phonon coupling, where a screening length is generally given by a dimensionless constant times magnetic length $l$. By solving the parquet RG equation numerically and employing a mean-field argument, we construct comprehensive ground-state phase diagrams of the semimetal in the quantum limit for these two cases, as a function of the Fermi wave length and the screening length (both normalized by $l$). In the repulsive interaction case, the ground state is either excitonic insulator (EI) in strong screening regime or Ising-type spin density wave in weak screening regime. In the attractive interaction case, the ground state is either EI that breaks the translational symmetries (strong screening regime), topological EI, charge Wigner crystal (intermediate screening regime), plain charge density wave or possible non-Fermi liquid (weak screening regime). We show that the topological EI supports a single copy of massless Dirac fermion at its side surface, and thereby exhibit a $\sqrt{H_{\perp}}$-type surface Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation in in-plane surface transports as a function of a canted magnetic field $H_{\perp}$. Armed with these theoretical knowledge, we discuss implications of recent transport experiments on graphite under the high field.

Helicoidal excitonic phase in an electron-hole double layer system

We propose helicoidal excitonic phase in a Coulomb-coupled two-dimensional electron-hole double layer (EHDL) system with relativistic spin-orbit interaction. Previously, it was demonstrated that layered InAs/AlSb/GaInSb heterostructure is an ideal experimental platform for searching excitonic condensate phases, while its electron layer has non-negligible Rashba interaction. We clarify that due to the Rashba term, the spin-triplet (spin-1) exciton field in the EHDL system forms a helicoidal structure and the helicoid plane can be controlled by an in-plane Zeeman field. We show that due to small but finite Dirac term in the heavy hole layer the helicoidal structure of the excitonic field under the in-plane field results in a helicoidal {\it magnetic} order in the electron layer. Based on linearization analyses, we further calculate momentum-energy dispersions of low-energy Goldstone modes in the helicoidal excitonic phase. We discuss possible experimental probes of the excitonic phase in the EHDL system.

Theory of metal-insulator transitions in graphite under high magnetic field

Graphite under high magnetic field exhibits consecutive metal-insulator (MI) transitions as well as re-entrant insulator-metal (IM) transition in the quasi-quantum limit at low temperature. In this paper, we identify the low-$T$ insulating phases as excitonic insulators with spin nematic orderings. We first point out that graphite under the relevant field regime is in the charge neutrality region, where electron and hole densities compensate each other. Based on this observation, we introduce interacting electron models with electron pocket(s) and hole pocket(s) and enumerate possible umklapp scattering processes allowed under the charge neutrality. Employing effective boson theories for the electron models and renormalization group (RG) analyses for the boson theories, we show that there exist critical interaction strengths above which the umklapp processes become relevant and the system enter excitonic insulator phases with long-range order of spin superconducting phase fields ("spin nematic excitonic insulator"). We argue that, when a pair of electron and hole pockets get smaller in size, a quantum fluctuation of the spin superconducting phase becomes larger and destabilizes the excitonic insulator phases, resulting in the re-entrant IM transitions. We also show that an odd-parity excitonic pairing between the electron and hole pockets reconstruct surface chiral Fermi arc states of electron and hole into a 2-dimensional helical surface state with a gapless Dirac cone. We discuss field- and temperature-dependences of in-plane resistance by surface transports via these surface states.

Unconventional scaling theory in disorder-driven quantum phase transition

We clarify novel forms of scaling functions of conductance, critical conductance distribution and localization length in a disorder-driven quantum phase transition between band insulator and Weyl semimetal phases. Quantum criticality of the phase transition is controlled by a clean-limit fixed point with spatially anisotropic scale invariance. We argue that the anisotropic scale invariance is reflected on unconventional scaling function forms in the quantum phase transition. We verify the proposed scaling function forms in terms of transfer-matrix calculations of conductance and localization length in a tight-binding model.

Experimental Signatures of Spin Superfluid Ground State in Canted Antiferromagnet Cr2O3 via Nonlocal Spin Transport

Spin superfluid is a novel emerging quantum matter arising from the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of spin-1 bosons. We demonstrate the spin superfluid ground state in canted antiferromagnetic Cr2O3 thin film at low temperatures via nonlocal spin transport. A large enhancement of the nonlocal spin signal is observed below ~ 20 K, and it saturates from ~ 5 K down to 2 K. We show that the spins can propagate over very long distances (~ 20 micro meters) in such spin superfluid ground state and the nonlocal spin signal decreases very slowly as the spacing increases with an inverse relationship, which is consistent with theoretical prediction. Furthermore, spin superfluidity has been investigated in the canted antiferromagnetic phase of the (11-20)-oriented Cr2O3 film, where the magnetic field dependence of the associated critical temperature follows a two-thirds power law near the critical point. The experimental demonstration of the spin superfluid ground state in canted antiferromagnet will be extremely important for the fundamental physics on the BEC of spin-1 bosons and paves the way for future spin supercurrent devices, such as spin-Josephson junctions.

Quantum Multicriticality in Disordered Weyl Semimetal

In electronic band structure of solid state material, two band touching points with linear dispersion appear in pair in the momentum space. When they annihilate with each other, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition from three-dimensional Weyl semimetal (WSM) phase to a band insulator phase such as Chern band insulator (CI) phase. The phase transition is described by a new critical theory with a `magnetic dipole' like object in the momentum space. In this paper, we reveal that the critical theory hosts a novel disorder-driven quantum multicritical point, which is encompassed by three quantum phases, renormalized WSM phase, CI phase, and diffusive metal (DM) phase. Based on the renormalization group argument, we first clarify scaling properties around the band touching points at the quantum multicritical point as well as all phase boundaries among these three phases. Based on numerical calculations of localization length, density of states and critical conductance distribution, we next prove that a localization-delocalization transition between the CI phase with a finite zero-energy density of states (zDOS) and DM phase belongs to an ordinary 3D unitary class. Meanwhile, a localization-delocalization transition between the Chern insulator phase with zero zDOS and a renormalized Weyl semimetal (WSM) phase turns out to be a direct phase transition whose critical exponent $ν=0.80\pm 0.01$. We interpret these numerical results by a renormalization group analysis on the critical theory.

Chiral Topological Excitons in a Chern Band Insulator

A family of semiconductors called as Chern band insulator are shown to host exciton bands with non-zero topological Chern integers and chiral exciton edge modes. Using a prototypical two-band Chern insulator model, we calculate a cross-correlation function to obtain the exciton bands and their Chern integers. The lowest exciton band acquires Chern integers such as $\pm 1$ and $\pm 2$ in electronic Chern insulator phase. The non-trivial topology can be experimentally observed both by non-local optoelectronic response of exciton edge modes and by a phase shift in the cross-correlation response due to the bulk mode. Our result suggests that magnetically doped HgTe, InAs/GaSb quantum wells and $\text{(Bi,Sb)}_{2} \text{Te}_{3}$ thin film are promising candidates for a platform of topological excitonics.

Theory of transport property of density wave phases in three-dimensional metals and semimetals under high magnetic field

Three-dimensional (3D) metals/semimetals under magnetic field have an instability toward a density wave (DW) ordering which breaks a translational symmetry along the field direction. Effective boson models for the DW phases take forms of XY models with/without Potts terms. Longitudinal conductivity along the field direction is calculated in the DW phases with inclusion of effects of low-energy charge fluctuation (phason) and disorder. A single-particle imaginary-time Green function is identified with a partition function of 3D XY models in the presence of pairs of magnetic monopoles. In terms of the celebrated electromagnetic duality, electronic spectral function is calculated near the DW phase transition. The result shows that the single-particle spectral function acquires an additional low-energy feature due to the strong phason fluctuation. Relevance to an in-plane conductance due to surface chiral Fermi arc states are also discussed.

Integer Quantum Magnon Hall Plateau-Plateau Transition in a Spin Ice Model

Low-energy magnon bands in a two-dimensional spin ice model become integer quantum magnon Hall bands. By calculating the localization length and the two-terminal conductance of magnon transport, we show that the magnon bands with disorders undergo a quantum phase transition from an integer quantum magnon Hall regime to a conventional magnon localized regime. Finite size scaling analysis as well as a critical conductance distribution shows that the quantum critical point belongs to the same universality class as that in the quantum Hall transition. We characterize thermal magnon Hall conductivity in disordered quantum magnon Hall system in terms of robust chiral edge magnon transport.

Nature of Possible Magnetic Phases in Frustrated Hyperkagome Iridate

Based on Kitaev-Heisenberg model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions, we studied nature of possible magnetic phases in frustrated hyperkagome iridate, Na$_4$Ir$_{3}$O$_8$ (Na-438). Using Monte-Carlo simulation, we showed that the phase diagram is mostly covered by two competing magnetic ordered phases; Z$_2$ symmetry breaking (SB) phase and Z$_6$ SB phase, latter of which is stabilized by the classical order by disorder. These two phases are separated by a first order phase transition line with Z$_8$-like symmetry. The critical nature at the Z$_6$ SB ordering temperature is characterized by the 3D XY universality class, below which U(1) to Z$_6$ crossover phenomena appears; the Z$_6$ spin anisotropy becomes irrelevant in a length scale shorter than a crossover length $Λ_*$ while becomes relevant otherwise. A possible phenomenology of polycrystalline Na-438 is discussed based on this crossover phenomena.
