Enhanced multi-fidelity modelling for digital twin and uncertainty quantification

The increasing significance of digital twin technology across engineering and industrial domains, such as aerospace, infrastructure, and automotive, is undeniable. However, the lack of detailed application-specific information poses challenges to its seamless implementation in practical systems. Data-driven models play a crucial role in digital twins, enabling real-time updates and predictions by leveraging data and computational models. Nonetheless, the fidelity of available data and the scarcity of accurate sensor data often hinder the efficient learning of surrogate models, which serve as the connection between physical systems and digital twin models. To address this challenge, we propose a novel framework that begins by developing a robust multi-fidelity surrogate model, subsequently applied for tracking digital twin systems. Our framework integrates polynomial correlated function expansion (PCFE) with the Gaussian process (GP) to create an effective surrogate model called H-PCFE. Going a step further, we introduce deep-HPCFE, a cascading arrangement of models with different fidelities, utilizing nonlinear auto-regression schemes. These auto-regressive schemes effectively address the issue of erroneous predictions from low-fidelity models by incorporating space-dependent cross-correlations among the models. To validate the efficacy of the multi-fidelity framework, we first assess its performance in uncertainty quantification using benchmark numerical examples. Subsequently, we demonstrate its applicability in the context of digital twin systems.

Long term stability study of triple GEM detector using different Argon based gas mixtures: an update

The long-term stability in terms of gain and energy resolution of a prototype triple Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detector has been investigated with high rate X-ray irradiation. Premixed Ar/CO2 (80:20) and (90:10) gases have been used for this stability study. A strong Fe55 X-ray source is used to irradiate the chamber. The uniqueness of this work is that the same source has been used to irradiate the GEM prototype and also to monitor the spectra. This arrangement is important since it reduces the mechanical complexity of using an X-ray generator as well as the cost of the setup. A small area of the chamber is exposed continuously to the X-ray for the entire duration of the operation. The effect of temperature and pressure on the gain and energy resolution is monitored. The result of the long-term stability test for a triple GEM detector using Ar/CO2 (70:30) gas mixture has been reported earlier [1]. The results with Ar/CO2 (80:20) and (90:10) gas mixtures for the same chamber are presented in this article.

Oscillation quenching in third order Phase Locked Loop coupled by mean field diffusive coupling

We explore analytically the oscillation quenching phenomena (amplitude death and oscillation death) in a coupled third order phase locked loop (PLL) both in periodic and chaotic mode. The phase locked loops are coupled through mean field diffusive coupling. The lower and upper limits of the quenched state are identified in the parameter space of the coupled PLL using Routh-Hurwitz technique. We further observe that the ability of convergence to the quenched state of coupled PLLs depends on the design parameters. For identical system both the system converges to homogeneous steady state whereas for non-identical parameter values they converge to inhomogeneous steady state. It is also observed that for identical systems the quenched state is wider than non-identical case. When the systems parameters are so chosen that each isolated loops are chaotic in nature, in that case we observe the quenched state is relatively narrow. All these phenomena are also demonstrated through numerical simulations.

Study of the properties of Cosmic rays and solar X-Ray Flares by balloon borne experiments

Indian Centre for Space Physics is engaged in pioneering balloon borne experiments with typical payloads less than ~ 3.5kg. Low cost rubber balloons are used to fly them to a height of about 40km. In a double balloon system, the booster balloon lifts the orbiter balloon to its cruising altitude where data is taken for a longer period of time. In this Paper, we present our first scientific report on the variation of Cosmic Rays and muons with altitude and detection of several solar flares in X-rays between 20keV and 100keV. We found the altitude of the Pfotzer maximum at Tropic of Cancer for cosmic rays and muons and catch several solar flares in hard X-rays. We find that the hard X-ray (> 40keV) sky becomes very transparent above Pfotzer maximum. We find the flare spectrum to have a power-law distribution. From these studies, we infer that valuable scientific research could be carried out in near space using low cost balloon borne experiments. Published in Online version of Indian Journal of Physics.

A parametric study on the buckling of functionally graded material plates with internal discontinuities using the partition of unity method

In this paper, the effect of local defects, viz., cracks and cutouts on the buckling behaviour of functionally graded material plates subjected to mechanical and thermal load is numerically studied. The internal discontinuities, viz., cracks and cutouts are represented independent of the mesh within the framework of the extended finite element method and an enriched shear flexible 4-noded quadrilateral element is used for the spatial discretization. The properties are assumed to vary only in the thickness direction and the effective properties are estimated using the Mori-Tanaka homogenization scheme. The plate kinematics is based on the first order shear deformation theory. The influence of various parameters, viz., the crack length and its location, the cutout radius and its position, the plate aspect ratio and the plate thickness on the critical buckling load is studied. The effect of various boundary conditions is also studied. The numerical results obtained reveal that the critical buckling load decreases with increase in the crack length, the cutout radius and the material gradient index. This is attributed to the degradation in the stiffness either due to the presence of local defects or due to the change in the material composition.
