Higher direct images of dualizing sheaves III

We show that for flat morphisms between varieties with rational singularities, the higher direct images of the structure sheaf are locally free. As a consequence, the identity component of the relative Picard scheme is a smooth algebraic group scheme. v.2. Bhatt pointed out that Lemma 9 was incorrect; it is now replaced. The main theorem is unchanged.

Hodge sheaves underlying flat projective families

We show that, for any fixed weight, there is a natural system of Hodge sheaves, whose Higgs field has no poles, arising from a flat projective family of varieties parametrized by a regular complex base scheme, extending the analogous classical result for smooth projective families due to Griffiths. As an application, based on positivity of direct image sheaves, we establish a criterion for base spaces of rational Gorenstein families to be of general type. A key component of our arguments is centered around the construction of derived categorical objects generalizing relative logarithmic forms for smooth maps and their functorial properties.

Non-Cohen-Macaulay canonical singularities

The purpose of this note is to show that in characteristic two there exists a smooth Fano variety for which the square of the anti-canonical bundle violates Kodaira vanishing. This is used in turn to construct non-Cohen-Macaulay canonical singularities in characteristic two.

Irrational centers

The main purpose of this article is to get a handle on determining how far a non-rational singularity is from being rational, or in other words, introduce a measure of the failure of a singularity being rational.

DB pairs and vanishing theorems

The main purpose of this article is to define the notion of DuBois singularities for pairs and proving a vanishing theorem using this new notion. The main vanishing theorem specializes to a new vanishing theorem for resolutions of log canonial singularities.

The canonical sheaf of Du Bois singularities

We prove that a Cohen-Macaulay normal variety $X$ has Du Bois singularities if and only if $π_*ω_{X'}(G) \simeq ω_X$ for a log resolution $π: X' \to X$, where $G$ is the reduced exceptional divisor of $π$. Many basic theorems about Du Bois singularities become transparent using this characterization (including the fact that Cohen-Macaulay log canonical singularities are Du Bois). We also give a straightforward and self-contained proof that (generalizations of) semi-log-canonical singularities are Du Bois, in the Cohen-Macaulay case. It also follows that the Kodaira vanishing theorem holds for semi-log-canonical varieties and that Cohen-Macaulay semi-log-canonical singularities are cohomologically insignificant in the sense of Dolgachev.

Extension theorems for differential forms and Bogomolov-Sommese vanishing on log canonical varieties

Given a p-form defined on the smooth locus of a normal variety, and a resolution of singularities, we study the problem of extending the pull-back of the p-form over the exceptional set of the desingularization. For log canonical pairs and for certain values of p, we show that an extension always exists, possibly with logarithmic poles along the exceptional set. As a corollary, it is shown that sheaves of reflexive differentials enjoy good pull-back properties. A natural generalization of the well-known Bogomolov-Sommese vanishing theorem to log canonical threefold pairs follows.

Holomorphic one-forms on varieties of general type

It has been conjectured that varieties of general type do not admit nowhere vanishing holomorphic one-forms. We confirm this conjecture for smooth minimal varieties and for varieties whose Albanese variety is simple.

Logarithmic Kodaira-Akizuki-Nakano vanishing and Arakelov-Parshin boundedness for singular varieties

The article has two parts. The first part is devoted to proving a singular version of the logarithmic Kodaira-Akizuki-Nakano vanishing theorem of Esnault and Viehweg. This is then used to prove other vanishing theorems. In the second part these vanishing theorems are used to prove an Arakelov-Parshin type boundedness result for families of canonically polarized varieties with rational Gorenstein singularities.
