A Statistical Approach to Multifield Inflation: Many-field Perturbations Beyond Slow Roll

We study multifield contributions to the scalar power spectrum in an ensemble of six-field inflationary models obtained in string theory. We identify examples in which inflation occurs by chance, near an approximate inflection point, and we compute the primordial perturbations numerically, both exactly and using an array of truncated models. The scalar mass spectrum and the number of fluctuating fields are accurately described by a simple random matrix model. During the approach to the inflection point, bending trajectories and violations of slow roll are commonplace, and 'many-field' effects, in which three or more fields influence the perturbations, are often important. However, in a large fraction of models consistent with constraints on the tilt the signatures of multifield evolution occur on unobservably large scales. Our scenario is a concrete microphysical realization of quasi-single-field inflation, with scalar masses of order $H$, but the cubic and quartic couplings are typically too small to produce detectable non-Gaussianity. We argue that our results are characteristic of a broader class of models arising from multifield potentials that are natural in the Wilsonian sense.

Universality in Multifield Inflation from String Theory

We develop a numerical statistical method to study linear cosmological fluctuations in inflationary scenarios with multiple fields, and apply it to an ensemble of six-field inflection point models in string theory. The latter are concrete microphysical realizations of quasi-single-field inflation, in which scalar masses are of order the Hubble parameter and an adiabatic limit is reached before the end of inflation. We find that slow-roll violations, bending trajectories and 'many-field' effects are commonplace in realizations yielding more than 60 e-folds of inflation, although models in which these effects are substantial are in tension with observational constraints on the tilt of the scalar power spectrum.

On the squeezed limit of the bispectrum in general single field inflation

We investigate the consistency relation relating the squeezed limit of the bispectrum to the scalar spectral index in single field models of inflation. We give a simple integral formula for the bispectrum in the squeezed limit in terms of the free mode mode functions of the primordial curvature perturbation, in any Lorentz invariant single field model of inflation and without resorting to any approximation, generalizing a recent result obtained by Ganc and Komatsu in the case of canonical kinetic terms. We use our result to verify the consistency relation in an exactly solvable class of models with a non-trivial speed of sound. We then verify the consistency relation at the first non-trivial order in the slow-varying approximation in general single field inflation (a known result) and at second order in this approximation in canonical single field inflation.

Combined local and equilateral non-Gaussianities from multifield DBI inflation

We study multifield aspects of Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) inflation. More specifically, we consider an inflationary phase driven by the radial motion of a D-brane in a conical throat and determine how the D-brane fluctuations in the angular directions can be converted into curvature perturbations when the tachyonic instability arises at the end of inflation. The simultaneous presence of multiple fields and non-standard kinetic terms gives both local and equilateral shapes for non-Gaussianities in the bispectrum. We also study the trispectrum, pointing out that it acquires a particular momentum dependent component whose amplitude is given by $f_{NL}^{loc} f_{NL}^{eq}$. We show that this relation is valid in every multifield DBI model, in particular for any brane trajectory, and thus constitutes an interesting observational signature of such scenarios.

Multifield Cosmological Perturbations at Third Order and the Ekpyrotic Trispectrum

Using the covariant formalism, we derive the equations of motion for adiabatic and entropy perturbations at third order in perturbation theory for cosmological models involving two scalar fields. We use these equations to calculate the trispectrum of ekpyrotic and cyclic models in which the density perturbations are generated via the entropic mechanism. In these models, the conversion of entropy into curvature perturbations occurs just before the big bang, either during the ekpyrotic phase or during the subsequent kinetic energy dominated phase. In both cases, we find that the non-linearity parameters f_{NL} and g_{NL} combine to leave a very distinct observational imprint.

Perturbations in generalized multi-field inflation

We study the linear perturbations of multi-field inflationary models governed by a Lagrangian which is a general function of the scalar fields and of a global kinetic term combining their spacetime gradients with an arbitrary field space metric. Our analysis includes k-inflation, DBI inflation and its multi-field extensions which have been recently studied. For this general class of models, we calculate the action to second order in the linear perturbations. We decompose the perturbations into an (instantaneous) adiabatic mode, parallel to the background trajectory, and entropy modes. We show that all the entropy modes propagate with the speed of light whereas the adiabatic mode propagates with an effective speed of sound. We also identify the specific combination of entropy modes which sources the curvature perturbation on large scales. We then study in some detail the case of two scalar fields: we write explicitly the equations of motion for the adiabatic and entropy modes in a compact form and discuss their quantum fluctuations and primordial power spectra.
