Propagation of Polarization in Transmission Problems

For geometric systems of real principal type, we define a subprincipal symbol and derive a transport equation for polarizations which, in the scalar case, is a well-known equation of Duistermaat and Hörmander. We apply the transport equation to propagation of polarization in transmission problems of elastodynamics, to interior bulk waves as well as to free (Rayleigh) surface waves. Using spectral factorizations of matrix polynomials having real spectrum, we establish reflection and refraction laws of polarizations at the boundary and at interior interfaces. The results are not limited to isotropic elasticity.

Boundary Values of Eigenfunctions on Riemannian Symmetric Spaces

We give a new and self-contained proof of a generic version of the (former) Helgason conjecture. It says that for generic spectral parameters the Poisson transform is a topological isomorphism, with the inverse given by a boundary value map. Following Oshima's approach to a simplified definition of boundary values, and using the earlier work of Baouendi and Goulaouic on Fuchsian type equations, our proof is along the lines of our earlier work in the rank one distributional case, and works for both the hyperfunction and the distribution setting.

Resonances and Scattering Poles in Symmetric Spaces of Rank One

We relate resolvent and scattering kernels for the Laplace operator on Riemannian symmetric spaces of rank one via boundary values in the sense of Kashiwara-Oshima. From this, we derive that the poles of the corresponding meromorphic continuations agree in a half-plane, and the residues correspond to each other under the boundary value map, so in particular the multiplicities agree as well. In the opposite half-plane, which is the square root of the resolvent set, the resolvent has no poles, whereas the scattering poles agree with the poles of the standard Knapp--Stein intertwiner. As a by-product of the underlying ideas, we obtain a new and self-contained proof of Helgason's conjecture for distributions in the case of rank one symmetric spaces.

Subsonic Free Surface Waves in Linear Elasticity

For general anisotropic linear elastic solids with smooth boundaries, Rayleigh-type surface waves are studied. Using spectral factorizations of matrix polynomials, a self-contained exposition of the case of a homogeneous half-space is given first. The main result is about inhomogeneous anisotropic bodies with curved surfaces. The existence of subsonic free surface waves is shown by giving ray series asymptotic expansions, including formulas for the transport equation.

Patterson--Sullivan distributions in higher rank

For a compact locally symmetric space $\XG$ of non-positive curvature, we consider sequences of normalized joint eigenfunctions which belong to the principal spectrum of the algebra of invariant differential operators. Using an $h$-\psdiff\ calculus on $\XG$, we define and study lifted quantum limits as weak$^*$-limit points of Wigner distributions. The Helgason boundary values of the eigenfunctions allow us to construct Patterson--Sullivan distributions on the space of Weyl chambers. These distributions are asymptotic to lifted quantum limits and satisfy additional invariance properties, which makes them useful in the context of quantum ergodicity. Our results generalize results for compact hyperbolic surfaces obtained by Anantharaman and Zelditch.

Rayleigh-type Surface Quasimodes in General Linear Elasticity

Rayleigh-type surface waves correspond to the characteristic variety, in the elliptic boundary region, of the displacement-to-traction map. In this paper, surface quasimodes are constructed for the reduced elastic wave equation, anisotropic in general, with traction-free boundary. Assuming a global variant of a condition of Barnett and Lothe, the construction is reduced to an eigenvalue problem for a selfadjoint scalar first order pseudo-differential operator on the boundary. The principal and the subprincipal symbol of this operator are computed. The formula for the subprincipal symbol seems to be new even in the isotropic case.
