On the $\mathfrak{M}_H(G)$-property for Selmer groups at supersingular reduction

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which has good supersingular reduction at the odd prime $p$. We study the variation of Iwasawa invariants and the $\mathfrak{M}_H(G)$-property for signed Selmer groups over $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of an imaginary quadratic number field $K$ that lie inside the $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extension $\mathbb{K}_\infty$ of $K$ and are not necessarily cyclotomic. We prove several equivalent criteria for the validity of the $\mathfrak{M}_H(G)$-property which involve the growth of $μ$-invariants of the signed Selmer groups over intermediate shifted $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions in $\mathbb{K}_\infty$, and the boundedness of $λ$-invariants as one runs over $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of $K$ inside $\mathbb{K}_\infty$. We give examples where the $\mathfrak{M}_H(G)$-property holds, and also examples where we can prove that it does not hold. It is striking that although the case of supersingular reduction is much more difficult than the case of ordinary reduction, we get finer results here; moreover, we are able to derive analogous criteria for the validity of the $\mathfrak{M}_H(G)$-property of the classical Selmer group, as well as the fine Selmer group. Many of the properties that we investigate have not been studied before in this non-torsion setting. Further, we study various implications between the $\mathfrak{M}_H(G)$-properties for Selmer groups, signed Selmer groups and fine Selmer groups. We apply our results to a conjecture of Mazur, and prove implications between the $\mathfrak{M}_H(G)$-property and Conjectures A and B of Coates and Sujatha.

Strong $n$-conjectures over rings of integers

We study diophantine equations of the form ${a_1 + \ldots + a_n = 0}$ where the $a_i$'s are assumed to be coprime and to satisfy certain subsum conditions. We are interested in the limit superior of the qualities of the admissible solutions of these equations, a question that in the case ${n = 3}$ is closely related to the famous $abc$-conjecture. In a previous article, we studied multiple versions of this problem over the ring of rational integers, summarising known results and proving stronger lower bounds. In this article we extend our work to the rings of the Gaussian integers and the Hurwitz quaternions, where a somewhat different picture emerges. In particular, we establish much stronger lower bounds on qualities than for the rational integers.

Improved lower bounds for strong $n$-conjectures

The well-known $abc$-conjecture concerns triples $(a,b,c)$ of non-zero integers that are coprime and satisfy ${a+b+c=0}$. The strong $n$-conjecture is a generalisation to $n$ summands where integer solutions of the equation ${a_1 + \ldots + a_n = 0}$ are considered such that the $a_i$ are pairwise coprime and satisfy a certain subsum condition. Ramaekers studied a variant of this conjecture with a slightly different set of conditions. He conjectured that in this setting the limit superior of the so-called qualities of the admissible solutions equals $1$ for any $n$. In this article, we follow results of Konyagin and Browkin. We restrict to a smaller, and thus more demanding, set of solutions, and improve the known lower bounds on the limit superior: for ${n \geq 6}$ we achieve a lower bound of $\frac54$; for odd $n \geq 5$ we even achieve $\frac53$. In particular, Ramaekers's conjecture is false for every ${n \ge 5}$.

On the non-commutative Iwasawa main conjecture for voltage covers of graphs

Let $p$ be a rational prime, and let $X$ be a connected finite graph. In this article we study voltage covers $X_\infty$ of $X$ attached to a voltage assignment $α$ which takes values in some uniform $p$-adic Lie group $G$. We formulate and prove an Iwasawa main conjecture for the projective limit of the Picard groups $\text{Pic}(X_n)$ of the intermediate voltage covers $X_n$, ${n \in \mathbb{N}}$, and we prove one inclusion of a main conjecture for the projective limit of the Jacobians $J(X_n)$. Moreover, we study the $\mathfrak{M}_H(G)$-property of $\mathbb{Z}_p[[G]]$-modules and prove a necessary condition for this property which involves the $μ$-invariants of $\mathbb{Z}_p$-subcovers ${Y \subseteq X_\infty}$ of $X$. If the dimension of $G$ is equal to 2, then this condition is also sufficient.

On the growth of the Jacobian in $Z_p^l$-voltage covers of graphs

We investigate the growth of the $p$-part of the Jacobians in voltage covers of finite connected multigraphs, where the voltage group is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_p^l$ for some ${l \ge 2}$, and we study analogues of a conjecture of Greenberg on the growth of class numbers in multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of number fields. Moreover we prove an Iwasawa main conjecture in this setting, and we study the variation of (generalised) Iwasawa invariants as one runs over the $\mathbb{Z}_p^l$-covers of a fixed finite graph $X$. We discuss many examples; in particular, we construct examples with non-trivial Iwasawa invariants.

Fine Selmer groups of modular forms

We compare the Iwasawa invariants of fine Selmer groups of $p$-adic Galois representations over admissible $p$-adic Lie extensions of a number field $K$ to the Iwasawa invariants of ideal class groups along these Lie extensions. More precisely, let $K$ be a number field, let $V$ be a $p$-adic representation of the absolute Galois group $G_K$ of $K$, and choose a $G_K$-invariant lattice ${T \subseteq V}$. We study the fine Selmer groups of ${A = V/T}$ over suitable $p$-adic Lie extensions $K_\infty/K$, comparing their corank and $μ$-invariant to the corank and the $μ$-invariant of the Iwasawa module of ideal class groups in $K_\infty/K$. In the second part of the article, we compare the Iwasawa $μ$- and $l_0$-invariants of the fine Selmer groups of CM modular forms on the one hand and the Iwasawa invariants of ideal class groups on the other hand over trivialising multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of $K$.

Fine Selmer groups and ideal class groups

Let $K_\infty/K$ be a uniform $p$-adic Lie extension. We compare several arithmetic invariants of Iwasawa modules of ideal class groups on the one side and fine Selmer groups of abelian varieties on the other side. If $K_\infty$ contains sufficiently many $p$-power torsion points of $A$, then we can compare the ranks and the Iwasawa $μ$-invariants of these modules over the Iwasawa algebra. In several special cases (e.g. multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions), we can also prove relations between suitable generalisations of the Iwasawa $λ$-invariant of the two types of Iwasawa modules. In the literature, different kinds of Iwasawa $λ$-invariants have been introduced for ideal class groups and Selmer groups. We define analogues of both concepts for fine Selmer groups and compare the resulting invariants. In order to obtain some of our main results, we prove new asymptotic formulas for the growth of ideal class groups and fine Selmer groups in multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions.

Fine Selmer groups of congruent $p$-adic Galois representations

We compare the Pontryagin duals of fine Selmer groups of two congruent $p$-adic Galois representations over admissible pro-$p$, $p$-adic Lie extensions $K_\infty$ of number fields $K$. We prove that in several natural settings the $π$-primary submodules of the Pontryagin duals are pseudo-isomorphic over the Iwasawa algebra; if the coranks of the fine Selmer groups are not equal, then we can still prove inequalities between the $μ$-invariants. In the special case of a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $K_\infty/K$, we also compare the Iwasawa $λ$-invariants of the fine Selmer groups, even in situations where the $μ$-invariants are non-zero. Finally, we prove similar results for certain abelian non-$p$-extensions.

On the Gross order of vanishing conjecture for large vanishing orders

We prove the Gross order of vanishing conjecture in special cases where the vanishing order of the character in question can be arbitrarily large. In almost all previously known cases the vanishing order is zero or one. One major ingredient of our proofs is the equivalence of this conjecture to the Gross-Kuz'min conjecture. We present here a direct proof of this equivalence, using only the known validity of the Iwasawa Main Conjecture over totally real fields.
