Robust Differential Evolution via Nonlinear Population Size Reduction and Adaptive Restart: The ARRDE Algorithm

Robustness across heterogeneous optimization regimes remains a central challenge in bound-constrained continuous optimization. In practice, users often prefer optimizers that remain reliable across different dimensionalities, landscape structures, and evaluation budgets. Yet many Differential Evolution (DE) variants that perform strongly in one regime degrade substantially when transferred to others. To address this issue, we propose the Adaptive Restart--Refine Differential Evolution (ARRDE) algorithm, a DE variant designed explicitly for cross-regime robustness. ARRDE combines an adaptive restart--refine strategy, a nonlinear population-size reduction schedule that depends on problem dimensionality, and a budget-aware population-initialization rule for restricted-budget settings. Because robustness cannot be established credibly from a narrow experimental setting, we evaluate ARRDE on five benchmark suites: CEC2011, CEC2017, CEC2019, CEC2020, and CEC2022. These suites span markedly different dimensions, landscape characteristics, and evaluation budgets, making this, to the best of our knowledge, one of the most comprehensive robustness-oriented evaluations reported for a proposed DE variant in this context. Since their official performance metrics emphasize different aspects and are not directly comparable, we additionally introduce a bounded accuracy-based scoring metric derived from relative error for cross-suite robustness assessment. Using both the official suite-specific metrics and the proposed unified metric, ARRDE demonstrates consistently strong performance and one of the most stable aggregate profiles across the five suites. These results support ARRDE as a competitive DE variant for robust optimization across heterogeneous benchmark regimes.

RCMAES: A Robust CMA-ES Variant for CEC2026 Competition

This paper proposes RCMAES, a novel variant of the Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES) for CEC benchmark optimization. RCMAES integrates a dimension-dependent nonlinear population-size reduction strategy with an adaptive restart mechanism within a pure CMA-ES framework. RCMAES is evaluated on three benchmark suites (CEC2017, CEC2020, and CEC2022) and compared with state-of-the-art DE algorithms as well as its closely related counterpart, BIPOP-aCMAES. Experimental results show that RCMAES achieves competitive and robust performance across all benchmarks.

Towards a pretrained deep learning estimator of the Linfoot informational correlation

We develop a supervised deep-learning approach to estimate mutual information between two continuous random variables. As labels, we use the Linfoot informational correlation, a transformation of mutual information that has many important properties. Our method is based on ground truth labels for Gaussian and Clayton copulas. We compare our method with estimators based on kernel density, k-nearest neighbours and neural estimators. We show generally lower bias and lower variance. As a proof of principle, future research could look into training the model with a more diverse set of examples from other copulas for which ground truth labels are available.

Radial multipliers on amalgamated free products of II_1-factors

Let $\mathcal{M}_i$ be a family of $\mathrm{II}_1$-factors, containing a common $\mathrm{II}_1$-subfactor $\mathcal{N}$, such that $[\mathcal{M}_i:\mathcal{N}] \in \mathbb{N}_0$ for all $i$. Furthermore, let $ϕ\colon \mathbb{N}_0 \to \mathbb{C}$. We show that if a Hankel matrix related to $ϕ$ is trace-class, then there exists a unique completely bounded map $M_ϕ$ on the amalgamated free product of the $\mathcal{M}_i$ with amalgamation over $\mathcal{N}$, which acts as an radial multiplier. Hereby we extend a result of U. Haagerup and the author for radial multipliers on reduced free products of unital $C^*$- and von Neumann algebras.

The law of large numbers for the free multiplicative convolution

In classical probability the law of large numbers for the multiplicative convolution follows directly from the law for the additive convolution. In free probability this is not the case. The free additive law was proved by D. Voiculescu in 1986 for probability measures with bounded support and extended to all probability measures with first moment by J. M. Lindsay and V. Pata in 1997, while the free multiplicative law was proved only recently by G. Tucci in 2010. In this paper we extend Tucci's result to measures with unbounded support while at the same time giving a more elementary proof for the case of bounded support. In contrast to the classical multiplicative convolution case, the limit measure for the free multiplicative law of large numbers is not a Dirac measure, unless the original measure is a Dirac measure. We also show that the mean value of \ln x is additive with respect to the free multiplicative convolution while the variance of \ln x is not in general additive. Furthermore we study the two parameter family (μ_{α,β})_{α,β\ge 0} of measures on (0,\infty) for which the S-transform is given by S_{μ_{α,β}}(z) = (-z)^β(1+z)^{-α}, 0 < z < 1.

Radial multipliers on reduced free products of operator algebras

Let A_i be a family of unital C*-algebras, respectively, of von Neumann algebras and phi: N_0 \to C. We show that if a Hankel matrix related to phi is trace-class, then there exists a unique completely bounded map M_phi on the reduced free product of the A_i, which acts as an radial multiplier. Hereby we generalize a result of Wysoczański for Herz-Schur multipliers on reduced group C*-algebras for free products of groups.
