Secret Key Rate Analysis of Distribution Matching Algorithms for Discrete-Modulated CV-QKD

Continuous variable quantum key distribution protocols (CV-QKD) with discrete modulation have been intensively investigated to bridge the gap between ideal Gaussian modulation and modern coherent optical communication systems. To mitigate the penalty of discrete modulation, probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) is applied to the modulation format and is typically performed by distribution matching (DM) algorithms. In this paper, we address the application of DM algorithms to perform PCS in CV-QKD protocols. We investigate the impact of approximating optimized Maxwell-Boltzman distributions with DM algorithms based on Huffman (HDM) and constant composition (CCDM) codes on the protocol's secret key rate (SKR) and tolerance to excess noise. Our results show that specifically symbol-by-symbol HDM degrades the SKR by at least 30\%, whereas CCDM matches the optimal SKR with code length of $10^3$ or more symbols. Furthermore, we also provide a statistical analysis of symbol dependence for both approaches, showing that CCDM must operate with blocks of at least $10^5$ symbols for the correlations become negligible. Finally, we propose an algorithm to generate independent symbols following near-optimal distributions.

End-to-End Image Compression with Segmentation Guided Dual Coding for Wind Turbines

Transferring large volumes of high-resolution images during wind turbine inspections introduces a bottleneck in assessing and detecting severe defects. Efficient coding must preserve high fidelity in blade regions while aggressively compressing the background. In this work, we propose an end-to-end deep learning framework that jointly performs segmentation and dual-mode (lossy and lossless) compression. The segmentation module accurately identifies the blade region, after which our region-of-interest (ROI) compressor encodes it at superior quality compared to the rest of the image. Unlike conventional ROI schemes that merely allocate more bits to salient areas, our framework integrates: (i) a robust segmentation network (BU-Netv2+P) with a CRF-regularized loss for precise blade localization, (ii) a hyperprior-based autoencoder optimized for lossy compression, and (iii) an extended bits-back coder with hierarchical models for fully lossless blade reconstruction. Furthermore, our ROI framework removes the sequential dependency in bits-back coding by reusing background-coded bits, enabling parallelized and efficient dual-mode compression. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fully integrated learning-based ROI codec combining segmentation, lossy, and lossless compression, ensuring that subsequent defect detection is not compromised. Experiments on a large-scale wind turbine dataset demonstrate superior compression performance and efficiency, offering a practical solution for automated inspections.

On High-Dimensional Twin-Field Quantum Key Distribution

Twin-Field Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a QKD protocol that uses single-photon interference to perform QKD over long distances. QKD protocols that encode information using high-dimensional quantum states can benefit from increased key rates and higher noise resilience. We define the essence of Twin-Field QKD and explore its generalization to higher dimensions. Further, we show that, ultimately, the Twin-Field protocol cannot be generalized to higher dimensions in accordance with our definition.

FDS: Frequency-Aware Denoising Score for Text-Guided Latent Diffusion Image Editing

Text-guided image editing using Text-to-Image (T2I) models often fails to yield satisfactory results, frequently introducing unintended modifications, such as the loss of local detail and color changes. In this paper, we analyze these failure cases and attribute them to the indiscriminate optimization across all frequency bands, even though only specific frequencies may require adjustment. To address this, we introduce a simple yet effective approach that enables the selective optimization of specific frequency bands within localized spatial regions for precise edits. Our method leverages wavelets to decompose images into different spatial resolutions across multiple frequency bands, enabling precise modifications at various levels of detail. To extend the applicability of our approach, we provide a comparative analysis of different frequency-domain techniques. Additionally, we extend our method to 3D texture editing by performing frequency decomposition on the triplane representation, enabling frequency-aware adjustments for 3D textures. Quantitative evaluations and user studies demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in producing high-quality and precise edits.

Performance of Cascade and LDPC-codes for Information Reconciliation on Industrial Quantum Key Distribution Systems

Information Reconciliation is a critical component of Quantum Key Distribution, ensuring that mismatches between Alice's and Bob's keys are corrected. In this study, we analyze, simulate, optimize, and compare the performance of two prevalent algorithms used for Information Reconciliation: Cascade and LDPC codes in combination with the Blind protocol. We focus on their applicability in practical and industrial settings, operating in realistic and application-close conditions. The results are further validated through evaluation on a live industrial QKD system.

Efficient Information Reconciliation for High-Dimensional Quantum Key Distribution

The Information Reconciliation phase in quantum key distribution has significant impact on the range and throughput of any QKD system. We explore this stage for high-dimensional QKD implementations and introduce two novel methods for reconciliation. The methods are based on nonbinary LDPC codes and the Cascade algorithm, and achieve efficiencies close the the Slepian-Wolf bound on q-ary symmetric channels.

Information Reconciliation for High-Dimensional Quantum Key Distribution using Nonbinary LDPC codes

Information Reconciliation is an essential part of Quantum Key distribution protocols that closely resembles Slepian-Wolf coding. The application of nonbinary LDPC codes in the Information Reconciliation stage of a high-dimensional discrete-variable Quantum Key Distribution setup is proposed. We model the quantum channel using a $q$-ary symmetric channel over which qudits are sent. Node degree distributions optimized via density evolution for the Quantum Key Distribution setting are presented, and we show that codes constructed using these distributions allow for efficient reconciliation of large-alphabet keys.

Generalized Time-bin Quantum Random Number Generator with Uncharacterized Devices

Random number generators (RNG) based on quantum mechanics are captivating due to their security and unpredictability compared to conventional generators, such as pseudo-random number generators and hardware-random number generators. This work analyzes evolutions in the extractable amount of randomness with increasing the Hilbert space dimension, state preparation subspace, or measurement subspace in a class of semi-device-independent quantum-RNG, where bounding the states' overlap is the core assumption, built on the prepare-and-measure scheme. We further discuss the effect of these factors on the complexity and draw a conclusion on the optimal scenario. We investigate the generic case of time-bin encoding scheme, define various input (state preparation) and outcome (measurement) subspaces, and discuss the optimal scenarios to obtain maximum entropy. Several input designs were experimentally tested and analyzed for their conceivable outcome arrangements. We evaluated their performance by considering the device's imperfections, particularly the after-pulsing effect and dark counts of the detectors. Finally, we demonstrate that this approach can boost the system entropy, resulting in more extractable randomness.

Quantum Key Distribution using Deterministic Single-Photon Sources over a Field-Installed Fibre Link

Quantum-dot-based single-photon sources are key assets for quantum information technology, supplying on-demand scalable quantum resources for computing and communication. However, longlasting issues such as limited long-term stability and source brightness have traditionally impeded their adoption in real-world applications. Here, we realize a quantum key distribution field trial using true single photons across an 18-km-long dark fibre, located in the Copenhagen metropolitan area, using an optimized, state-of-the-art, quantum-dot single-photon source frequency-converted to the telecom wavelength. A secret key generation rate of >2 kbits/s realized over a 9.6 dB channel loss is achieved with a polarization-encoded BB84 scheme, showing remarkable stability for more than 24 hours of continuous operation. Our results highlight the maturity of deterministic single-photon source technology while paving the way for advanced single-photon-based communication protocols, including fully device-independent quantum key distribution, towards the goal of a quantum internet.

Perceptual Evaluation on Audio-visual Dataset of 360 Content

To open up new possibilities to assess the multimodal perceptual quality of omnidirectional media formats, we proposed a novel open source 360 audiovisual (AV) quality dataset. The dataset consists of high-quality 360 video clips in equirectangular (ERP) format and higher-order ambisonic (4th order) along with the subjective scores. Three subjective quality experiments were conducted for audio, video, and AV with the procedures detailed in this paper. Using the data from subjective tests, we demonstrated that this dataset can be used to quantify perceived audio, video, and audiovisual quality. The diversity and discriminability of subjective scores were also analyzed. Finally, we investigated how our dataset correlates with various objective quality metrics of audio and video. Evidence from the results of this study implies that the proposed dataset can benefit future studies on multimodal quality evaluation of 360 content.

Capacity and Achievable Rates of Fading Few-mode MIMO IM/DD Optical Fiber Channels

The optical fiber multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel with intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) per spatial path is treated. The spatial dimensions represent the multiple modes employed for transmission and the cross-talk between them originates in the multiplexers and demultiplexers, which are polarization dependent and thus timevarying. The upper bounds from free-space IM/DD MIMO channels are adapted to the fiber case, and the constellation constrained capacity is constructively estimated using the Blahut-Arimoto algorithm. An autoencoder is then proposed to optimize a practical MIMO transmission in terms of pre-coder and detector assuming channel distribution knowledge at the transmitter. The pre-coders are shown to be robust to changes in the channel.

Deep Decoding of $\ell_\infty$-coded Light Field Images

To enrich the functionalities of traditional cameras, light field cameras record both the intensity and direction of light rays, so that images can be rendered with user-defined camera parameters via computations. The added capability and flexibility are gained at the cost of gathering typically more than $100\times$ greater amount of information than conventional images. To cope with this issue, several light field compression schemes have been introduced. However, their ways of exploiting correlations of multidimensional light field data are complex and are hence not suited for inexpensive light field cameras. In this work, we propose a novel $\ell_\infty$-constrained light-field image compression system that has a very low-complexity DPCM encoder and a CNN-based deep decoder. Targeting high-fidelity reconstruction, the CNN decoder capitalizes on the $\ell_\infty$-constraint and light field properties to remove the compression artifacts and achieves significantly better performance than existing state-of-the-art $\ell_2$-based light field compression methods.

Perceptual Evaluation of 360 Audiovisual Quality and Machine Learning Predictions

In an earlier study, we gathered perceptual evaluations of the audio, video, and audiovisual quality for 360 audiovisual content. This paper investigates perceived audiovisual quality prediction based on objective quality metrics and subjective scores of 360 video and spatial audio content. Thirteen objective video quality metrics and three objective audio quality metrics were evaluated for five stimuli for each coding parameter. Four regression-based machine learning models were trained and tested here, i.e., multiple linear regression, decision tree, random forest, and support vector machine. Each model was constructed using a combination of audio and video quality metrics and two cross-validation methods (k-Fold and Leave-One-Out) were investigated and produced 312 predictive models. The results indicate that the model based on the evaluation of VMAF and AMBIQUAL is better than other combinations of audio-video quality metric. In this study, support vector machine provides higher performance using k-Fold (PCC = 0.909, SROCC = 0.914, and RMSE = 0.416). These results can provide insights for the design of multimedia quality metrics and the development of predictive models for audiovisual omnidirectional media.

Light-field view synthesis using convolutional block attention module

Consumer light-field (LF) cameras suffer from a low or limited resolution because of the angular-spatial trade-off. To alleviate this drawback, we propose a novel learning-based approach utilizing attention mechanism to synthesize novel views of a light-field image using a sparse set of input views (i.e., 4 corner views) from a camera array. In the proposed method, we divide the process into three stages, stereo-feature extraction, disparity estimation, and final image refinement. We use three sequential convolutional neural networks for each stage. A residual convolutional block attention module (CBAM) is employed for final adaptive image refinement. Attention modules are helpful in learning and focusing more on the important features of the image and are thus sequentially applied in the channel and spatial dimensions. Experimental results show the robustness of the proposed method. Our proposed network outperforms the state-of-the-art learning-based light-field view synthesis methods on two challenging real-world datasets by 0.5 dB on average. Furthermore, we provide an ablation study to substantiate our findings.

Round-robin differential phase-time-shifting protocol for quantum key distribution: theory and experiment

Quantum key distribution (QKD) allows the establishment of common cryptographic keys among distant parties. Many of the QKD protocols that were introduced in the past involve the challenge of monitoring the signal disturbance over the communication line, in order to evaluate the information leakage to a potential eavesdropper. Recently, a QKD protocol that circumvents the need for monitoring signal disturbance, has been proposed and demonstrated in initial experiments. Here, we propose a new version of this so-called round-robin differential phase-shifting (RRDPS) protocol, in which both time and phase degrees-of-freedom are utilized to enlarge the Hilbert space dimensionality, without increasing experimental complexity or relaxing security assumptions. We derive the security proofs of the round-robin differential phase-time-shifting (RRDPTS) protocol in the collective attack scenario and benchmark the new protocol against RRDPS for different experimental parameters. Furthermore, a proof-of-concept experiment of the RRDPTS protocol, using weak coherent pulses and decoy-state method, is demonstrated over 80 km of fiber link. Our results show that the RRDPTS protocol can achieve higher secret key rate in comparison with the RRDPS, in the condition of high quantum bit error rate.

Towards a Perceived Audiovisual Quality Model for Immersive Content

This paper studies the quality of multimedia content focusing on 360 video and ambisonic spatial audio reproduced using a head-mounted display and a multichannel loudspeaker setup. Encoding parameters following basic video quality test conditions for 360 videos were selected and a low-bitrate codec was used for the audio encoder. Three subjective experiments were performed for the audio, video, and audiovisual respectively. Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and its variants for 360 videos were computed to obtain objective quality metrics and subsequently correlated with the subjective video scores. This study shows that a Cross-Format SPSNR-NN has a slightly higher linear and monotonic correlation over all video sequences. Based on the audiovisual model, a power model shows a highest correlation between test data and predicted scores. We concluded that to enable the development of superior predictive model, a high quality, critical, synchronized audiovisual database is required. Furthermore, comprehensive assessor training may be beneficial prior to the testing to improve the assessors' discrimination ability particularly with respect to multichannel audio reproduction. In order to further improve the performance of audiovisual quality models for immersive content, in addition to developing broader and critical audiovisual databases, the subjective testing methodology needs to be evolved to provide greater resolution and robustness.
