Regularity for $H$-systems of bounded distortion

We consider weak solutions $u \in W^{1,n}(U,\mathbf{R}^{n+1})$ of the $H$-system $- \operatorname{div} ( |\mathrm{D} u|^{n-2} \mathrm{D} u ) = (H \circ u) \, \mathbf{J} u$, where $n \ge 2$, $U$ is the open unit ball in $\mathbf{R}^n$, and $H$ is bounded. We show that $u$ is locally bounded if its distortion $|\mathrm{D} u|^n / |\mathbf{J} u|$ is bounded on the set where $|u|$ is large. By a result of Fusco, Kristensen, Leone, and Verde, it follows that $u$ is locally Hölder continuous if $H$ is continuous, and continuously differentiable with locally Hölder continuous derivative if $H$ is locally Lipschitz. The proof pushes forward $|\mathrm{D} u|^{n-2} \mathrm{D} u \circ \mathrm{D} u^*$ by $u$ to a linear functional on continuous compactly supported maps of $\mathbf{R}^{n+1}$ into $\operatorname{Hom}(\mathbf{R}^{n+1},\mathbf{R}^{n+1})$, whose values on derivatives are controlled by the equation. When the distortion is bounded, this functional satisfies the hypotheses of an inequality of Michael-Simon type for measures satisfying a first-order partial differential equation, due to De Philippis, Gennaioli, Pigati, and Rindler. The inequality yields lower bounds for the mass ratios of the push-forward of $|\mathrm{D} u|^n \mathscr{L}^n$ by $u$, and these imply boundedness.

Geometry of the Atomic Condition

The class AC of integrands satisfying the atomic condition was introduced by De Philippis, De Rosa, and Ghiraldin in 2018. These integrands give rise to Almgren elliptic geometric functionals as proven by the second author and De Rosa in 2020. Explicit examples in intermediate dimensions include small class 2 perturbations of the area integrand and the recent anisotropies constructed by De Rosa, Firester, and Tsiamis, among them the $\ell^q$ norms in Plücker coordinates for $q$ close to $2$. We reinterpret the atomic condition in terms of convex geometry. We also propose variants of AC, related to the SAC and USAC defined by De Rosa and Tione, which we call the exposed condition EC, the strong exposed condition SEC, and the quadratic exposed condition QEC. For integrands of class 2, QEC is equivalent to validity of a Caccioppoli-type inequality and is stable under class 2 perturbations; every such QEC integrand admits Lipschitzian normals. Combining these results with a result of De Rosa, Firester, and Tsiamis, we prove that a Lipschitz graph whose anisotropic mean curvature for a QEC integrand of class 2 is $p$-integrable, with $k < p < \infty$, is of class $\mathscr{C}^{1,α}$ on an open set of full measure. Finally, for all $k \ge 2$ and $n - k \ge 3$ we construct strictly polyconvex integrands - associated to inner-product norms on $\bigwedge_k \mathbf{R}^n$ - which fail the atomic condition, showing that strict polyconvexity is necessary but not sufficient for AC.

Rectifiability of every finite order for stationary integral varifolds

We give an alternative proof of a theorem of Brena, De Lellis and Franceschini (arXiv:2503.00649): the support of a stationary integral $d$ dimensional varifold in an open subset of $\mathbf{R}^n$ is $(\mathscr{H}^d, d)$ rectifiable of class $(k, α)$ for every positive integer $k$ and every $0 < α< 1$, and in particular of class $\mathscr{C}^{\infty}$. Our proof is independent of theirs and proceeds by different means. It compares the varifold, at every scale and at $\mathscr{H}^d$ almost every point, with the graph of a solution of the Euler--Lagrange system of a smoothed area integrand, and thereby derives an excess-decay estimate that is faster than any power of the scale; the conclusion then follows from Santilli's characterisation of higher order rectifiability together with Whitney's extension theorem.

Perpendicularity and Locality for Codimension-One Varifolds with Bounded Anisotropic Mean Curvature

Suppose $ F $ is an integrand associated with a uniformly convex $ \mathscr{C}^{3} $-norm, and $ V $ is a $ n $-dimensional varifold in an open subset of $ \mathbf{R}^{n+1} $ such that $ \mathscr{H}^n \llcorner \operatorname{spt} \| V \| $ is absolutely continuous with respect to $ \| V \| $ and the mean $ F $-curvature $ \mathbf{h}_{F}(V, \cdot) $ is bounded in $\mathbf{L}^\infty $. In our previous result arXiv:2507.18357 we prove that $ \operatorname{spt} \| V \| $ is $ \mathscr{C}^{2} $-rectifiable and the $ \mathscr{C}^{1} $-regular part $ M $ of $ \operatorname{spt} \| V \| $ coincides $ \mathscr{H}^n $ almost everywhere with the unit-density stratum of $ V $. In this paper we prove that $ \mathbf{h}_{F}(V,a) \in \operatorname{Nor}(M,a) $ for $ \mathscr{H}^n $ a.e.\ $ a \in M $ and that $ \mathbf{h}_{F}(V, \cdot) $ agrees with the approximate mean $ F $-curvature coming from the $ \mathscr{C}^{2} $-rectifiable covering of $ M $. These results provide anisotropic extensions of well known theorems in the Euclidean setting by Brakke, Schätzle and Ambrosio-Masnou.

Quadratic flatness and Regularity for Codimension-One Varifolds with Bounded Anisotropic Mean Curvature

We prove that if $ V $ is a $ n $-dimensional varifold in an open subset of $ \mathbf{R}^{n+1} $ with bounded anisotropic mean curvature such that $ {\rm spt} \| V \| $ has locally finite $ \mathscr{H}^n $-measure, then $ {\rm spt} \| V \| $ can be touched by two mutually tangent balls at $ \mathscr{H}^n $ almost all points. In particular, this result implies that $ \mathscr{H}^n $ almost all of $ {\rm spt} \| V \| $ can be covered by the union of countably many $ C^2 $-regular $ n $-dimensional submanifolds of $ \mathbf{R}^{n+1} $. Moreover, combined with Allard's local anisotropic regularity theorem, it implies that if $ V $ is an integral varifold with bounded anisotropic mean curvature and if $ \mathscr{H}^n \llcorner {\rm spt} \| V \| $ is absolutely continuous with respect to $ \| V \| $, then $ {\rm spt} \| V \| $ is $ C^{1, α} $-regular around $ \mathscr{H}^n $ almost every point of density $ 1 $.

Regularity of distance functions from arbitrary closed sets

We investigate the distance function $\boldsymbolδ_{K}^ϕ$ from an arbitrary closed subset $ K $ of a~finite-dimensional Banach space $ (\mathbf{R}^{n}, ϕ) $, equipped with a uniformly convex $\mathcal{C}^{2}$-norm $ ϕ$. These spaces are known as \emph{Minkowski spaces} and they are one of the fundamental spaces of Finslerian geometry (see https://doi.org/10.1016/S0723-0869(01)80025-6). We prove that the gradient of $\boldsymbolδ_{K}^ϕ$ satisfies a Lipschitz property on the complement of the $ϕ$-cut-locus of $K$ (a.k.a. the medial axis of $\mathbf{R}^{n} \sim K$) and we prove a~structural result for the set of points outside $K$ where $\boldsymbolδ_{K}^ϕ$ is pointwise twice differentiable, providing an answer to a question raised by Hiriart-Urruty (see https://doi.org/10.2307/2321379). Our results give sharp generalisations of some classical results in the theory of distance functions and they are motivated by critical low-regularity examples for which the available results gives no meaningful or very restricted informations. The results of this paper find natural applications in the theory of partial differential equations and in convex geometry.

Equivalence of the ellipticity conditions for geometric variational problems

We exploit the so called atomic condition, recently defined by De Philippis, De Rosa, and Ghiraldin in [Comm. Pure Appl. Math.] and proved to be necessary and sufficient for the validity of the anisotropic counterpart of the Allard rectifiability theorem. In particular, we address an open question of this seminal work, showing that the atomic condition implies the strict Almgren geometric ellipticity condition.

Existence of solutions to a general geometric elliptic variational problem

We consider the problem of minimising an inhomogeneous anisotropic elliptic functional in a class of closed $m$ dimensional subsets of $\mathbf{R}^n$ which is stable under taking smooth deformations homotopic to the identity and under local Hausdorff limits. We prove that the minimiser exists inside the class and is an $(\mathscr{H}^m,m)$~rectifiable set in the sense of Federer. The class of competitors encodes a notion of spanning a boundary. We admit unrectifiable and non-compact competitors and boundaries, and we make no restrictions on the dimension $m$ and the co-dimension $n-m$ other than $1 \le m < n$. An important tool for the proof is a novel smooth deformation theorem. The skeleton of the proof and the main ideas follow Almgren's 1968 paper. In the end we show that classes of sets spanning some closed set $B$ in homological and cohomological sense satisfy our axioms.

Estimating discrete curvatures in terms of beta numbers

For an arbitrary Radon measure $μ$ we estimate the integrated discrete curvature of $μ$ in terms of its centred variant of Jones' beta numbers. We farther relate integrals of centred and non-centred beta numbers. As a corollary, employing the recent result of Tolsa [Calc. Var. PDE, 2015], we obtain a partial converse of the theorem of Meurer [arXiv:1510.04523].

Higher order rectifiability of measures via averaged discrete curvatures

We provide a sufficient geometric condition for $\mathbb{R}^n$ to be countably $(μ,m)$ rectifiable of class $\mathscr{C}^{1,α}$ (using the terminology of Federer), where $μ$ is a Radon measure having positive lower density and finite upper density $μ$ almost everywhere. Our condition involves integrals of certain many-point interaction functions (discrete curvatures) which measure flatness of simplices spanned by the parameters.

Decay rates for the quadratic and super-quadratic tilt-excess of integral varifolds

This paper concerns integral varifolds of arbitrary dimension in an open subset of Euclidean space satisfying integrability conditions on their first variation. Firstly, the study of pointwise power decay rates almost everywhere of the quadratic tilt-excess is completed by establishing the precise decay rate for two-dimensional integral varifolds of locally bounded first variation. In order to obtain the exact decay rate, a coercive estimate involving a height-excess quantity measured in Orlicz spaces is established. Moreover, counter-examples to pointwise power decay rates almost everywhere of the super-quadratic tilt-excess are obtained. These examples are optimal in terms of the dimension of the varifold and the exponent of the integrability condition in most cases, for example if the varifold is not two-dimensional. These examples also demonstrate that within the scale of Lebesgue spaces no local higher integrability of the second fundamental form, of an at least two-dimensional curvature varifold, may be deduced from boundedness of its generalised mean curvature vector. Amongst the tools are Cartesian products of curvature varifolds.

Compactness and isotopy finiteness for submanifolds with uniformly bounded geometric curvature energies

In this paper, we establish compactness for various geometric curvature energies including integral Menger curvature, and tangent-point repulsive potentials, defined a priori on the class of compact, embedded $m$-dimensional Lipschitz submanifolds in ${\mathbb{R}}^n$. It turns out that due to a smoothing effect any sequence of submanifolds with uniformly bounded energy contains a subsequence converging in $C^1$ to a limit submanifold. This result has two applications. The first one is an isotopy finiteness theorem: there are only finitely many isotopy types of such submanifolds below a given energy value, and we provide explicit bounds on the number of isotopy types in terms of the respective energy. The second one is the lower semicontinuity - with respect to Hausdorff-convergence of submanifolds - of all geometric curvature energies under consideration, which can be used to minimise each of these energies within prescribed isotopy classes.

Geometric Sobolev-like embedding using high-dimensional Menger-like curvature

We study a modified version of Lerman-Whitehouse Menger-like curvature defined for m+2 points in an n-dimensional Euclidean space. For 1 <= l <= m+2 and an m-dimensional subset S of R^n we also introduce global versions of this discrete curvature, by taking supremum with respect to m+2-l points on S. We then define geometric curvature energies by integrating one of the global Menger-like curvatures, raised to a certain power p, over all l-tuples of points on S. Next, we prove that if S is compact and m-Ahlfors regular and if p is greater than ml, then the P. Jones' β-numbers of S must decay as r^t with r \to 0 for some t in (0,1). If S is an immersed C^1 manifold or a bilipschitz image of such set then it follows that it is Reifenberg flat with vanishing constant, hence (by a theorem of David, Kenig and Toro) an embedded C^{1,t} manifold. We also define a wide class of other sets for which this assertion is true. After that, we bootstrap the exponent t to the optimal one a = 1 - ml/p showing an analogue of the Morrey-Sobolev embedding theorem. Moreover, we obtain a qualitative control over the local graph representations of S only in terms of the energy.

Integral Menger curvature for sets of arbitrary dimension and codimension

We propose a notion of integral Menger curvature for compact, $m$-dimensional sets in $n$-dimensional Euclidean space and prove that finiteness of this quantity implies that the set is $C^{1,α}$ embedded manifold with the H{ö}lder norm and the size of maps depending only on the curvature. We develop the ideas introduced by Strzelecki and von der Mosel [Adv. Math. 226(2011)] and use a similar strategy to prove our results.

Characterizing $W^{2,p}$~submanifolds by $p$-integrability of global curvatures

We give sufficient and necessary geometric conditions, guaranteeing that an immersed compact closed manifold $Σ^m\subset \R^n$ of class $C^1$ and of arbitrary dimension and codimension (or, more generally, an Ahlfors-regular compact set $Σ$ satisfying a mild general condition relating the size of holes in $Σ$ to the flatness of $Σ$ measured in terms of beta numbers) is in fact an embedded manifold of class $C^{1,τ}\cap W^{2,p}$, where $p>m$ and $τ=1-m/p$. The results are based on a careful analysis of Morrey estimates for integral curvature--like energies, with integrands expressed geometrically, in terms of functions that are designed to measure either (a) the shape of simplices with vertices on $Σ$ or (b) the size of spheres tangent to $Σ$ at one point and passing through another point of $Σ$. Appropriately defined \emph{maximal functions} of such integrands turn out to be of class $L^p(Σ)$ for $p>m$ if and only if the local graph representations of $Σ$ have second order derivatives in $L^p$ and $Σ$ is embedded. There are two ingredients behind this result. One of them is an equivalent definition of Sobolev spaces, widely used nowadays in analysis on metric spaces. The second one is a careful analysis of local Reifenberg flatness (and of the decay of functions measuring that flatness) for sets with finite curvature energies. In addition, for the geometric curvature energy involving tangent spheres we provide a nontrivial lower bound that is attained if and only if the admissible set $Σ$ is a round sphere.

Minimal Hölder regularity implying finiteness of integral Menger curvature

We study two families of integral functionals indexed by a real number $p > 0$. One family is defined for 1-dimensional curves in $\R^3$ and the other one is defined for $m$-dimensional manifolds in $\R^n$. These functionals are described as integrals of appropriate integrands (strongly related to the Menger curvature) raised to power $p$. Given $p > m(m+1)$ we prove that $C^{1,α}$ regularity of the set (a curve or a manifold), with $α> α_0 = 1 - \frac{m(m+1)}p$ implies finiteness of both curvature functionals ($m=1$ in the case of curves). We also show that $α_0$ is optimal by constructing examples of $C^{1,α_0}$ functions with graphs of infinite integral curvature.
