Observation of Strong Terahertz Radiation from a Liquid Water Line

Terahertz radiation generation from liquid water has long been considered to be impossible due to strong absorption. A few very recent works reported terahertz generation from water, but the mechanism is not clear and the efficiency demands to be enhanced. We show experimentally that strong single-cycle terahertz radiation with field strength of $\rm 0.2~MV cm^{-1}$ is generated from a water line/column of $\sim 200 μm$ in diameter irradiated by a mJ femtosecond laser beam. This strength is 100-fold higher than that produced from air. We attribute the mechanism to the laser-ponderomotive-force-induced current with the symmetry broken around the water-column interface. This mechanism can explain our following observations: the radiation can be generated only when the laser propagation axis deviates from the column center; the deviation determines its field strength and polarity; it is always p-polarized no matter whether the laser is p- or s-polarized. This study provides a simple and efficient scheme of table-top terahertz sources based on liquid water.

A Study of the Occurrence of Supercooling of Water

Supercooling of water can be easily studied with a simple apparatus suitable for the student laboratory. We describe such an apparatus and its capabilities. The parameters influencing supercooling include the initial temperature of the water and the temperature and the type of chilling medium. We correlate the occurrence of supercooling with the ability of the chilling medium to promptly nucleate ice; if it nucleates promptly, the layer of ice crystals formed on the boundary will initiate freezing of the bulk water without supercooling. If the chilling medium is unable to nucleate ice promptly, ice nucleation is delayed and the water supercools. Students can study and compare supercooling of distilled and natural water. Even quite dirty river water may be supercooled by as much as 5 C.

Insulator-metal transition shift related to magnetic polarons in La0.67-xYxCa0.33MnO3

The magnetic transport properties have been measured for La0.67-xYxCa0.33MnO3 (0 <= x <= 0.14) system. It was found that the transition temperature Tp almost linearly moves to higher temperature as H increases. Electron spin resonance confirms that above Tp, there exist ferromagnetic clusters. From the magnetic polaron point of view, the shift of Tp vs. H was understood, and it was estimated that the size of the magnetic polaron is of 9.7~15.4 angstrom which is consistent with the magnetic correlation length revealed by the small-angle neutron-scattering technique. The transport properties at temperatures higher than Tp conform to the variable-range hopping mechanism.
