Orbital and spin effects for the upper critical field in As deficient disordered Fe pnictide superconductors

We report B_c2 data for LaO_{0.9}F_{0.1}FeAs_{1-delta} in a wide T and field range up to 60 Tesla. The large slope of B_c2 approx ~ -6 Tesla/K near an improved T_c = 28.5 K of the in-plane B_c2(T) contrasts with a flattening starting at 23 K above 30 Tesla we regard as the onset of Pauli-limited behavior (PLB) with B_c2(0) about 65 Tesla. We interpret a similar hitherto unexplained flattening of the B_c2(T) curves reported for at least three other disordered closely related systems as also as a manifestation of PLB. Their Maki parameters have been estimated analyzing their B_c2(T) data within the WHH approach. The pronounced PLB of (Ba,K)Fe_2As_2 single crystals from a tin-flux is attributed also to a significant As deficiency. Consequences of our results are discussed in terms of disorder effects within conventional (CSC) and unconventional superconductivity (USC). USC scenarios with nodes on individual Fermi surface sheets (FSS), can be discarded for our samples. The increase of dB_c2/dT|_{T_c} by sizeable disorder provides evidence for an important intraband (intra-FSS) contribution to the orbital upper critical field. We suggest that it can be ascribed either to an impurity driven transition from s_{+-} USC to CSC of an extended s_{++}-wave state or to a stabilized s_{+-}-state provided As-vacancies cause predominantly strong intraband scattering in the unitary limit. We compare our results with B_c2 data from the literature with no PLB for fields below 60 to 70 Tesla probed so far. A novel disorder related scenario of a complex interplay of SC with two different competing magnetic instabilities is suggested.

Upper critical field measurements up to 60 T in arsenic-deficient LaO_(0.9)F_(0.1)FeAs_(1-delta): Pauli limiting behaviour at high fields vs improved superconductivity at low fields

We report resistivity and upper critical field B_c2(T) data for As deficient LaO_(0.9)F_(0.1)FeAs_(1-delta) in a wide temperature and high field range up to 60 T. These disordered samples exhibit a slightly enhanced superconducting transition at T_c = 29 K and a significantly enlarged slope dB_(c2))/dT = -5.4 T/K near T_c which contrasts with a flattening of B_(c2)(T) starting near 23 K above 30 T. This flattening is interpreted as Pauli limiting behaviour (PLB) with B_(c2)(0) approx 63 T. We compare our results with B_(c2)(T)-data reported in the literature for clean and disordered samples. Whereas clean samples show no PLB for fields below 60 to 70 T, the hitherto unexplained flattening of B_(c2)(T) for applied fields H || ab observed for several disordered closely related systems is interpreted also as a manifestation of PLB. Consequences of our results are discussed in terms of disorder effects within the frame of conventional and unconventional superconductivity.

Crystal water induced switching of magnetically active orbitals in CuCl2

The dehydration of CuCl2*2(H2O) to CuCl2 leads to a dramatic change in magnetic behavior and ground state. Combining density functional electronic structure and model calculations with thermodynamical measurements we reveal the microscopic origin of this unexpected incident -- a crystal water driven switching of the magnetically active orbitals. This switching results in a fundamental change of the coupling regime from a three-dimensional antiferromagnet to a quasi one-dimensional behavior. CuCl2 can be well described as a frustrated J1-J2 Heisenberg chain with ferromagnetic exchange J1 and J2/J1 ~ -1.5 for which a helical ground state is predicted.

New insight into the physics of iron pnictides from optical and penetration depth data

We report theoretical values for the unscreened plasma frequencies Omega_p of several Fe pnictides obtained from DFT based calculations within the LDA and compare them with experimental plasma frequencies obtained from reflectivity data. The sizable renormalization observed for all considered compounds points to the presence of many-body effects beyond the LDA. From the large empirical background dielectric constant of about 12-15, we estimate a large arsenic polarizability of about 9.5 +- 1.2 Angstroem^3 where the details depend on the polarizabilities of the remaining ions taken from the literature. This large polarizability can significantly reduce the value of the Coulomb repulsion U_d about 4 eV on iron known from iron oxides to a level of 2 eV or below. In general, this result points to rather strong polaronic effects as suggested by G.A. Sawatzky et al., in Refs. arXiv:0808.1390 and arXiv:0811.0214 (Berciu et al.). Possible consequences for the conditions of a formation of bipolarons are discussed, too. From the extrapolated muon spin rotation penetration depth data at T= 0 and the experimental Omega_p we estimate the total coupling constant lambda_tot for the el-boson interaction within the Eliashberg-theory adopting a single band approximation. For LaFeAsO_0.9F_0.1 a weak to intermediately strong coupling regime and a quasi-clean limit behaviour are found. For a pronounced multiband case we obtain a constraint for various intraband coupling constants which in principle allows for a sizable strong coupling in bands with either slow electrons or holes.

High-Field Pauli-Limiting Behavior and Strongly Enhanced Upper Critical Magnetic Fields near the Transition Temperature of an Arsenic-Deficient LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs_(1-δ) Superconductor

We report upper critical field B_c2(T) data for disordered (arsenic-deficient) LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs_(1-delta) in a wide temperature and magnetic field range up to 47 T. Because of the large linear slope of Bc2 about -5.4 T/K to -6.6 T/K near Tc = 28.5 K the T-dependence of the in-plane Bc2(T) shows a flattening near 23 K above 30 T which points to Pauli-limited behavior with Bc2(0) about 63-68 T. Our results are discussed in terms of disorder effects within conventional and unconventional superconducting pairings.

Optical Study of LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs: Evidence for a Weakly Coupled Superconducting State

We have studied the reflectance of the recently discovered superconductor LaO_0.9F0.FeAs in a wide energy range from the far infrared to the visible regime. We report on the observation of infrared active phonons, the plasma edge (PE) and possible interband transitions. On the basis of this data and the reported in-plane penetration depth lambda_L(0) about 254 nm [H. Luetkens et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. v. 101, 0970009 (2008)] a disorder sensitive relatively small value of the total electron electron-boson coupling constant lambda_tot=lambda_e-ph+lambda_e-sp ~ 0.6 +- 0.35 can be estimated adopting an effective single-band picture.

Conventional Superconductivity in Fe-Based Pnictides: the Relevance of Intra-Band Electron-Boson Scattering

Various recent experimental data and especially the large Fe-isotope effect point against unconventional pairings, since the large intra-band impurity scattering is strongly pair-breaking for them. The strength of the inter-band impurity scattering in some single crystals may be strong and probably beyond the Born scattering limit. In that case the proposed s(+-) pairing (hole(h)- and electron(el)-gaps are of opposite signs) is suppressed but possibly not completely destroyed. The data imply that the intra-band pairing in the h- and in the el-band, which are inevitably due to some nonmagnetic el-boson interaction (EBI), must be taken into account. EBI is either due to phonons (EPI) or possibly due to excitons (EEI), or both are simultaneously operative. We discuss their interplay briefly. The large Fe-isotope effect favors the EPI and the s(+) pairing (the h- and el-gaps are in-phase).

Thermodynamics of the frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain

We studied the thermodynamics of the one-dimensional J1-J2 spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain for ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor bonds J1 < 0 and frustrating antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor bonds J1 > 0 using full diagonalization of finite rings and a second-order Green-function formalism. Thereby we focus on J2 < |J1|/4 where the ground state is still ferromagnetic, but the frustration influences the thermodynamic properties. We found that their critical indices are not changed by J2. The analysis of the low-temperature behavior of the susceptibility chi leads to the conclusion that this behavior changes from chi \propto T^{-2} at J2 < |J1|/4 to chi \propto T^{-3/2} at the quantum-critical point J2=|J1|/4. Another effect of the frustration is the appearance of an extra low-T maximum in the specific heat C_v(T) for J2 \gtrsim |J1|/8, indicating its strong influence on the low-energy spectrum.

Thermodynamics of a one-dimensional frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnet

We calculate the thermodynamic quantities (correlation functions , correlation length xi, spin susceptibility chi, and specific heat C_V) of the frustrated one-dimensional spin-half J2-J2 Heisenberg ferromagnet, i.e. for J2< 0.25|J1|, using a rotation-invariant Green's-function formalism and full diagonalization of finite lattices. We find that the critical indices are not changed by J2, i.e., chi = y_0 T^{-2} and xi = x_0 T^{-1} at T \to 0. However, the coefficients y_0 and x_0 linearly decrease with increasing J2 according to the relations y_0=(1-4J_2/|J_1|)/24 and x_0 =(1-4J_2/|J_1|)/4, i.e., both coefficients vanish at J2=0.25|J1| indicating the zero-temperature phase transition that is accompanied by a change of the low-temperature behavior of chi (xi) from chi \propto T^{-2} (xi \propto T^{-1}) at J2 < 0.25|J1| to chi \propto T^{-3/2} (xi \propto T^{-1/2}) at J2 = 0.25|J1|. In addition, we detect the existence of an additional low-temperature maximum in the specific heat when approaching the critical point at J2=0.25|J1|.

Commensurate Spin Density Wave in LaOFeAs: A Local Probe Study

We present a detailed study on the magnetic order in the undoped mother compound LaOFeAs of the recently discovered Fe-based superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs. In particular, we present local probe measurements of the magnetic properties of LaOFeAs by means of $^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and muon spin relaxation in zero external field along with magnetization and resistivity studies. These experiments prove a commensurate static magnetic order with a strongly reduced ordered moment of 0.25(5) $μ_B$ at the iron site below T_N = 138 K, well separated from a structural phase transition at T_N = 156 K. The temperature dependence of the sublattice magnetization is determined and compared to theory. Using a four-band spin density wave model both, the size of the order parameter and the quick saturation below T_N are reproduced.

Temperature dependent optical conductivity of undoped cuprates with weak exchange

The optical conductivity sigma(omega) is calculated at finite temperature T for CuO_2 chain clusters within a pd-Hubbard model. Data at T = 300 K for Li_2CuO_2 are reanalyzed within this approach. The relative weights of Zhang-Rice singlet and triplet charge excitations near 2.5 and 4 eV, respectively, depend strongly on T, and a rather dramatic dependence of sigma(omega) on the ratio of the first to second neighbor exchange integrals is predicted. On the basis of these results, information about exchange interactionsfor frustrated edge-shared cuprates can be obtained from T-dependent optical spectra. Our results are also relevant for magnetically weakly coupled wide-gap insulators in general.

The Superconducting Gap Behavior in the Antiferromagnetic Nickel-Borocarbide Compounds RNi2B2C (R=Dy, Ho, Er, Tm) Studied by Point-Contacts Spectroscopy

An general survey of the superconducting (SC) gap study in the title compounds by point-contact (PC) spectroscopy is presented. The SC gap was determined from dV/dI of PCs employing the well-known theory of conductivity for normal metal-superconductor PCs accounting Andreev reflection. The theory was modified by including pair-breaking effects considering the presence of magnetic rare-earth ions. A possible multiband structure of these compounds was also taken into account. The PC study of the gap in the Er-compound (TN=6K Tc=6.5K) the SC gap has a BCS-like dependence in the AF state. The SC gap for R = Ho (TN=5.2K<Tc=8.5K) exhibits below T*=5.6K a single-band BCS-like dependence vanishing above T*, where a specific magnetic order occurs. The difference in the SC gap behavior in the title compounds is attributed to different AF ordering.

Magnetic ordering of weakly coupled frustrated quantum spin chains

The ordering temperature of a quasi-one-dimensional system, consisting of weakly interacting quantum spin-1/2 chains with antiferromagnetic spin-frustrating couplings (or zig-zag ladder) is calculated. The results show that a quantum critical point between two phases of the one-dimensional subsystem plays a crucial role. If the one-dimensional subsystem is in the antiferromagnetic-like phase in the ground state, similar to the phase of a spin chain without frustration, weak couplings yield magnetic ordering of the Neel type. For intra-chain spin-frustrating interactions larger than the critical one (at which the quantum phase transition takes place), the quasi-one-dimensional spin system manifests a spiral magnetic incommensurate ordering. The obtained results of our quantum theory are compared with the quasi-classical approximations. The calculated features of magnetic ordering are expected to be generic for weakly coupled quantum spin chains with gapless excitations and spin-frustrating nearest and next-nearest neighbor interactions.

Nonrelativistic Multiferroicity in the Nonstoichiometric Spin s=1/2 Spiral Chain Cuprate LiCu2O2

We argue for a recently observed puzzling multiferroic behavior in s=1/2 1D chain cuprate LiCu2O2 with edge-shared arrangement of CuO4 plaquettes and incommensurate spiral spin ordering can be consistently explained if one takes into account the nonrelativistic exchange-induced electric polarization on the Cu2+ centers substituting for the positions native for the Cu1+ ions. These substituent centers are proved to be an effective probe of the spin incommensurability and magnetic field effects.

Multiferroicity due to nonstoichiometry in the chain cuprate LiVCuO_4

The recently observed multiferroic behavior in the s=1/2 chain cuprate LiVCuO_4 (LiCuVO_4) with edge-shared CuO_4 plaquettes and helical spin ordering does not agree with the existing theories such as a spin-current scenario. We argue that the effect can be consistently explained, if the exchange-induced electric polarization on the out-of-chain Cu^2+ centers substituting for Li-ions in LiVCuO_4 is taken into account. These substituent centers are proved to be an effective probe of the spin incommensurability and the magnetic field effects.

Microscopic mechanisms of spin-dependent electric polarization in 3d oxides

We address a systematic microscopic theory of spin-dependent electric polarization in 3d oxides starting with a generic three-site two-hole cluster. A perturbation scheme realistic for 3d oxides is applied which implies the quenching of orbital moments by low-symmetry crystal field, strong intra-atomic correlations, the dp-transfer effects, and rather small spin-orbital coupling. An effective spin operator of the electric dipole moment is deduced incorporating both nonrelativistic and relativistic terms. The nonrelativistic electronic polarization mechanism related with the effects of the redistribution of the local on-site charge density due to $pd$ covalency and exchange coupling is believed to govern the multiferroic behaviour in 3d oxides. The relativistic exchange-dipole moment is mainly stems from the nonrelativistic one due to the perturbation effect of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya coupling and is estimated to be a weak contributor to the electric polarization observed in the most of 3d multiferroics.

Point-contact spectroscopy of the antiferromagnetic superconductor HoNi2B2C in the normal and superconducting state

Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements on antiferromagnetic (AF) (T_N=5.2K) HoNi2B2C single crystals in the normal and two different superconducting (SC) states (T_c=8.5K and $T_c^*=5.6K) are reported. The PC study of the electron-boson(phonon) interaction (EB(P)I) spectral function reveals pronounced phonon maxima at 16, 22 and 34meV. For the first time the high energy maxima at about 50meV and 100meV are resolved. Additionally, an admixture of a crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations with a maximum near 10meV and a `magnetic` peak near 3meV are observed. The contribution of the 10-meV peak in PC EPI constant λ_PC is evaluated as 20-30%, while contribution of the high energy modes at 50 and 100meV amounts about 10% for each maxima, so the superconductivity might be affected by CEF excitations. The SC gap in HoNi2B2C exhibits a standard single-band BCS-like dependence, but vanishes at $T_c^*=5.6K<T_c, with 2Δ/kT_c^*=3.9. The strong coupling Eliashberg analysis of the low-temperature SC phase with T_c^*=5.6K =T_N, coexisting with the commensurate AF structure, suggests a sizable value of the EPI constant λ_s=0.93. We also provide strong support for the recently proposed by us ''Fermi surface (FS) separation'' scenario for the coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in magnetic borocarbides, namely, that the superconductivity in the commensurate AF phase survives at a special (nearly isotropic) FS sheet without an admixture of Ho 5d states. Above T_c^* the SC features in the PC characteristics are strongly suppressed pointing to a specific weakened SC state between T_c* and T_c.

Disentangling surface and bulk photoemission using circularly polarized light

We show that in the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) near-surface induced fields can be useful for disentangling the surface and bulk related emission. The jump of the dielectric function at the interface results in a nonzero term $\operatorname{div}\textbf{A}$ in the photoemission matrix element. The term happens to be significant approximately within the first unit cell and leads to the circular dichroism for the states localized therein. As an example we use ARPES spectra of an YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ crystal to distinguish between the overdoped surface related component and its bulk counterparts.
