Spintronic properties of one-dimensional electron gas in graphene armchair ribbons

We have investigated, using effective mass approach (EMA), magnetic properties of a one-dimensional electron gas in graphene armchair ribbons when the electrons of occupy only the lowest conduction subband. We find that magnetic properties of the one-dimensional electron gas may depend sensitively on the width of the ribbon. For ribbon widths $L_x=3Ma_0$, a critical point separates ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states while for $L_x=(3M+1)a_0$ paramagnetic state is stable ($M$ is an integer and $a_{0}$ is the length of the unit cell). These width-dependent properties are a consequence of eigenstates that have a subtle width-dependent mixture of $\mathbf{K}$ and $\mathbf{K'}$ states, and can be understood by examining the wavefunction overlap that appears in the expression for the many-body exchange self-energy. Ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states may be used for spintronic purposes.

Comment on "Fock-Darwin States of Dirac Electrons in Graphene-Based Artificial Atoms"

Chen, Apalkov, and Chakraborty (Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 186803 (2007)) have computed Fock-Darwin levels of a graphene dot by including only basis states with energies larger than or equal to zero. We show that their results violate the Hellman-Feynman theorem. A correct treatment must include both positive and negative energy basis states. Additional basis states lead to new energy levels in the optical spectrum and anticrossings between optical transition lines.

Room-Temperature Charge Stability Modulated by Quantum Effects in a Nanoscale Silicon Island

We report on transport measurement performed on a room-temperature-operating ultra-small Coulomb blockade devices with a silicon island of sub-5nm. The charge stability at 300K exhibits a substantial change in slopes and diagonal size of each successive Coulomb diamond, but remarkably its main feature persists even at low temperature down to 5.3K except for additional Coulomb peak splitting. This key feature of charge stability with additional fine structures of Coulomb peaks are successfully modeled by including the interplay between Coulomb interaction, valley splitting, and strong quantum confinement, which leads to several low-energy many-body excited states for each dot occupancy. These excited states become enhanced in the sub-5nm ultra-small scale and persist even at 300K in the form of cluster, leading to the substantial modulation of charge stability.

Scaling properties of induced density of chiral and non-chiral Dirac fermions in magnetic fields

We find that a repulsive potential of graphene in the presence of a magnetic field has bound states that are peaked inside the barrier with tails extending over \ell(N + 1), where \ell and N are the magnetic length and Landau level(LL) index. We have investigated how these bound states affect scaling properties of the induced density of filled Landau levels of massless Dirac fermions. For chiral fermions we find, in strong coupling regime, that the density inside the repulsive potential can be greater than the value in the absence of the potential while in the weak coupling regime we find negative induced density. Similar results hold also for non-chiral fermions. As one moves from weak to strong coupling regimes the effective coupling constant between the potential and electrons becomes more repulsive, and then it changes sign and becomes attractive. Different power-laws of induced density are found for chiral and non-chiral fermions.

Electronic properties of a graphene antidot in magnetic fields

We report on several unusual properties of a graphene antidot created by a piecewise constant potential in a magnetic field. We find that the total probability of finding the electron in the barrier can be nearly one while it is almost zero outside the barrier. In addition, for each electron state of a graphene antidot there is a dot state with exactly the same wavefunction but with a different energy. This symmetry is a consequence of Klein tunneling of Dirac electrons. Moreover, in zigzag nanoribbons we find strong coupling between some antidot states and zigzag edge states. Experimental tests of these effects are proposed.

States near Dirac points of rectangular graphene dot in a magnetic field

In neutral graphene dots the Fermi level coincides with the Dirac points. We have investigated in the presence of a magnetic field several unusual properties of single electron states near the Fermi level of such a rectangular-shaped graphene dot with two zigzag and two armchair edges. We find that a quasi-degenerate level forms near zero energy and the number of states in this level can be tuned by the magnetic field. The wavefunctions of states in this level are all peaked on the zigzag edges with or without some weight inside the dot. Some of these states are magnetic field-independent surface states while the others are field-dependent. We have found a scaling result from which the number of magnetic field-dependent states of large dots can be inferred from those of smaller dots.

Effect of many-body quantum fluctuations on matrix Berry phases of a two-dimensional n-type semiconductor quantum dot

In the presence of spin-orbit coupling and inversion symmetry of the lateral confinement potential a single electron does not exhibit matrix Berry phases in quasi-two-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots. In such a system we investigate whether many-body correlation effects can lead to finite matrix Berry phases. We find that the transformation properties of many-electron wavefunctions under two-dimensional inversion operation do not allow finite matrix Berry phases. This effect is exact and is independent of the form of electron-electron interactions. On the other hand, quasi-two-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots with lateral confinement potential without inversion symmetry can have finite matrix Berry phases. We find that many-body quantum fluctuations can change matrix Berry phases significantly in such systems.

Pumping in quantum dots and non-Abelian matrix Berry phases

We have investigated pumping in quantum dots from the perspective of non-Abelian (matrix) Berry phases by solving the time dependent Schr{ö}dinger equation exactly for adiabatic changes. Our results demonstrate that a pumped charge is related to the presence of a finite matrix Berry phase. When consecutive adiabatic cycles are performed the pumped charge of each cycle is different from the previous ones.

X-ray edge problem of graphene

The X-ray edge problem of graphene with the Dirac fermion spectrum is studied. At half-filling the linear density of states suppresses the singular response of the Fermi liquid, while away from half-filling the singular features of the Fermi liquid reappear. The crossover behavior as a function of the Fermi energy is examined in detail. The exponent of the power-law absorption rate depends both on the intra- and inter-valley scattering, and it changes as a function of the Fermi energy, which may be tested experimentally.

Generation and detection of non-Abelian matrix Berry phases through manipulation of electric confinement potential of a semiconductor quantum dot

A matrix Berry phase can be generated and detected by {\it all electric means} in II-VI or III-V n-type semiconductor quantum dots by changing the shape of the confinement potential. This follows from general symmetry considerations in the presence of spin-orbit coupling terms. The resulting 2 x 2 matrix Berry phase can be characterized by two numbers of geometric origin. We investigate how these parameters depend on the shape and area of closed adiabatic paths. We suggest how the matrix Berry phase may be detected in transport measurements.

On the character of states near the Fermi level in (Ga,Mn)As: impurity to valence band crossover

We discuss the character of states near the Fermi level in Mn doped GaAs, as revealed by a survey of dc transport and optical studies over a wide range of Mn concentrations. A thermally activated valence band contribution to dc transport, a mid-infrared peak at energy hbar omega approx 200 meV in the ac- conductivity, and the hot photoluminescence spectra indicate the presence of an impurity band in low doped (<<1% Mn) insulating GaAs:Mn materials. Consistent with the implications of this picture, both the impurity band ionization energy inferred from the dc transport and the position of the mid-infrared peak move to lower energies and the peak broadens with increasing Mn concentration. In metallic materials with > 2% doping, no traces of Mn-related activated contribution can be identified in dc-transport, suggesting that the impurity band has merged with the valence band. No discrepancies with this perception are found when analyzing optical measurements in the high-doped GaAs:Mn. A higher energy (hbar omega approx 250 meV) mid-infrared feature which appears in the metallic samples is associated with inter-valence band transitions. Its red-shift with increased doping can be interpreted as a consequence of increased screening which narrows the localized-state valence-band tails and weakens higher energy transition amplitudes. Our examination of the dc and ac transport characteristics of GaAs:Mn is accompanied by comparisons with its shallow acceptor counterparts, confirming the disordered valence band picture of high-doped metallic GaAs:Mn material.

Polarization dependence of emission spectra of multiexcitons in self-assembled quantum dots

We have investigated the polarization dependence of the emission spectra of p-shell multiexcitons of a quantum dot when the single particle level spacing is larger than the characteristic energy of the Coulomb interactions. We find that there are many degenerate multiexciton states. The emission intensities depend on the number of degenerate initial and final states of the optical transitions. However, unlike the transition energies, they are essentially independent of the strength of the Coulomb interactions. In the presence of electron-hole symmetry the independence is exact.

Control of many electron states in semiconductor quantum dots by non-Abelian vector potentials

Adiabatic time evolution of degenerate eigenstates of a quantum system provides a means for controlling electronic states since mixing between degenerate levels generates a matrix Berry phase. In the presence of spin-orbit coupling in n-type semiconductor quantum dots the electron Hamiltonian is invariant under time reversal operation and the many body groundstate may be doubly degenerate. This double degeneracy can generate non-Abelian vector potentials when odd number of electrons are present. We find that the antisymmetry of many electron wavefunction has no effect on the matrix Berry phase. We have derived equations that allow one to investigate the effect of electron correlations by expressing the non-Abelian vector potentials for many electron system in terms of single electron non-Abelian vector potentials.

Edge and bulk merons in double quantum dots with spontaneous interlayer phase coherence

We have investigated nucleation of merons in double quantum dots when a lateral distortion with a reflection symmetry is present in the confinement potential. We find that merons can nucleate both inside and at the edge of the dots. In addition to these merons, our results show that electron density modulations can be also present inside the dots. An edge meron appears to have approximately a half integer winding number.

Degenerate states of narrow semiconductor rings in the presence of spin orbit coupling: Role of time-reversal and large gauge transformations

The electron Hamiltonian of narrow semiconductor rings with the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin orbit terms is invariant under time-reversal operation followed by a large gauge transformation. We find that all the eigenstates are doubly degenerate when integer or half-integer quantum fluxes thread the quantum ring. The wavefunctions of a degenerate pair are related to each other by the symmetry operation. These results are valid even in the presence of a disorder potential. When the Zeeman term is present only some of these degenerate levels anticross.

Single electron control in n-type semiconductor quantum dots using non-Abelian holonomies generated by spin orbit coupling

We propose that n-type semiconductor quantum dots with the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin orbit interactions may be used for single electron manipulation through adiabatic transformations between degenerate states. All the energy levels are discrete in quantum dots and possess a double degeneracy due to time reversal symmetryin the presence of the Rashba and/or Dresselhaus spin orbit coupling terms. We find that the presence of double degeneracy does not necessarily give rise to a finite non-Abelian (matrix) Berry phase. We show that a distorted two-dimensional harmonic potential may give rise to non-Abelian Berry phases. The presence of the non-Abelian Berry phase may be tested experimentally by measuring the optical dipole transitions.

Collective excitation of quantum wires and effect of spin-orbit coupling in the presence of a magnetic field along the wire

The band structure of a quantum wire with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling develops a pseudogap in the presence of a magnetic field along the wire. In such a system spin mixing at the Fermi wavevectors $-k_F$ and $k_F$ can be different. We have investigated theoretically the collective mode of this system, and found that the velocity of this collective excitation depends sensitively on the strength of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction and magnetic field. Our result suggests that the strength of the spin-orbit interaction can be determined from the measurement of the velocity.

Interplay between electron spin and orbital pseudospin in double quantum dots

We investigate theoretically spin and orbital pseudospin magnetic properties of a molecular orbital in parabolic and elliptic double quantum dots (DQDs). In our many body calculation we include intra- and inter-dot electron-electron interactions, in addition to the intradot exchange interaction of `p' orbitals. We find for parabolic DQDs that, except for the half or completely filled molecular orbital, spins in different dots are ferromagnetically coupled while orbital pseudospins are antiferromagnetically coupled. For elliptic DQDs spins and pseudospins are either ferromagnetically or antiferromagnetically coupled, depending on the number of electrons in the molecular orbital. We have determined orbital pseudospin quantum numbers for the groundstates of elliptic DQDs. An experiment is suggested to test the interplay between orbital pseudospin and spin magnetism.
