Variants of the James Tree space

Recently, W. Cuellar Carrera, N. de Rancourt, and V. Ferenczi introduced the notion of $d_2$-hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, i.e., non-Hilbertian spaces that do not contain the direct sum of any two non-Hilbertian subspaces. They posed the question of the existence of such spaces that are $\ell_2$-saturated. Motivated by this question, we define and study two variants $JT_{2,p}$ and $JT_G$ of the James Tree space $JT$. They are meant to be classical analogues of a future space that will affirmatively answer the aforementioned question.

Joint spreading models and uniform approximation of bounded operators

We investigate the following property for Banach spaces. A Banach space $X$ satisfies the Uniform Approximation on Large Subspaces (UALS) if there exists $C>0$ with the following property: for any $A\in\mathcal{L}(X)$ and convex compact subset $W$ of $\mathcal{L}(X)$ for which there exists $\varepsilon>0$ such that for every $x\in X$ there exists $B\in W$ with $\|A(x)-B(x)\|\le\varepsilon\|x\|$, there exists a subspace $Y$ of $X$ of finite codimension and a $B\in W$ with $\|(A-B)|_Y\|_{\mathcal{L}(Y,X)}\leq C\varepsilon$. We prove that a class of separable Banach spaces including $\ell_p$, for $1\le p< \infty$, and $C(K)$, for $K$ countable and compact, satisfy the UALS. On the other hand every $L_p[0,1]$, for $1\le p\le \infty$ and $p\neq2$, fails the property and the same holds for $C(K)$, where $K$ is an uncountable metrizable compact space. Our sufficient conditions for UALS are based on joint spreading models, a multidimensional extension of the classical concept of spreading model, introduced and studied in the present paper.

Spreading Models in Banach Space Theory

We extend the classical Brunel-Sucheston definition of the spreading model by introducing the $\mathcal{F}$-sequences $(x_s)_{s\in\mathcal{F}}$ in a Banach space and the plegma families in $\mathcal{F}$ where $\mathcal{F}$ is a regular thin family. The new concept yields a transfinite increasing hierarchy of classes of spreading sequences. We explore the corresponding theory and we present examples establishing this hierarchy and illustrating the limitation of the theory.

Function spaces not containing $\ell_{1}$

For $Ω$ bounded and open subset of $\mathbb{R}^{d_{0}}$ and $X$ a reflexive Banach space with 1-symmetric basis, the function space $JF_{X}(Ω)$ is defined. This class of spaces includes the classical James function space. Every member of this class is separable and has non-separable dual. We provide a proof of topological nature that $JF_{X}(Ω)$ does not contain an isomorphic copy of $\ell_{1}$. We also investigate the structure of these spaces and their duals.

Higher Order Spreading Models

We introduce the higher order spreading models associated to a Banach space $X$. Their definition is based on $\ff$-sequences $(x_s)_{s\in\ff}$ with $\ff$ a regular thin family and the plegma families. We show that the higher order spreading models of a Banach space $X$ form an increasing transfinite hierarchy $(\mathcal{SM}_ξ(X))_{ξ<ω_1}$. Each $\mathcal{SM}_ξ(X)$ contains all spreading models generated by $\ff$-sequences $(x_s)_{s\in\ff}$ with order of $\ff$ equal to $ξ$. We also provide a study of the fundamental properties of the hierarchy.

Finite order spreading models

Extending the classical notion of the spreading model, the $k$-spreading models of a Banach space are introduced, for every $k\in\mathbb{N}$. The definition, which is based on the $k$-sequences and plegma families, reveals a new class of spreading sequences associated to a Banach space. Most of the results of the classical theory are stated and proved in the higher order setting. Moreover, new phenomena like the universality of the class of the 2-spreading models of $c_0$ and the composition property are established. As consequence, a problem concerning the structure of the $k$-iterated spreading models is solved.

Hausdorff Measures and Functions of Bounded Quadratic Variation

To each function $f$ of bounded quadratic variation ($f\in V_2$) we associate a Hausdorff measure $μ_f$. We show that the map $f\toμ_f$ is locally Lipschitz and onto the positive cone of $\mathcal{M}[0,1]$. We use the measures $\{μ_f:f\in V_2\}$ to determine the structure of the subspaces of $V_2^0$ which either contain $c_0$ or the square stopping time space $S^2$.

A class of Banach spaces with few non strictly singular operators

We construct a family $(\mathcal{X}_\al)_{\al\le ω_1}$ of reflexive Banach spaces with long transfinite bases but with no unconditional basic sequences. In our spaces $\mathcal{X}_\al$ every bounded operator $T$ is split into its diagonal part $D_T$ and its strictly singular part $S_T$.

Unconditional structures of weakly null sequences

The following dichotomy is established for a normalized weakly null sequence in a Banach space: Either every subsequence admits a convex block subsequence equivalent to the unit vector basis of c, the Banach space of null sequences under the supremum norm, or there exists a subsequence which is boundedly convexly complete. This result generalizes J. Elton's dichotomy on weakly null sequences.
